Pfizer plans $120M expansion for COVID pill manufacturing at Michigan facility

Pfizer is planning to invest another $120 million into its Kalamazoo-area manufacturing facility in an effort to expand production of its antiviral COVID drug, Paxlovid.
The pharmaceutical company said its latest expansion will create 250 new jobs and ramp up production of Paxlovid, an oral COVID-19 treatment available under emergency use authorization for people 12 and older with mild to moderate illness who are considered high risk of severe illness.
Pfizer announced plans to expand manufacturing capacity of Paxlovid last month, and shared more details Monday, June 6, during a press event at the company’s Portage campus. Production of Paxlovid is already underway and will be expanded over the next year, explained Mike McDermot, Pfizer’s chief global supply officer. Read more: M LIVE

Dubuque Area Chamber: Inside the Chamber Lobby

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

The legislature adjourned at 12:16am last Wednesday, calling the 2022 session of the 89th General Assembly to a close.

Throughout session the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce fought on behalf of our members to support workforce solutions, promote economic development, and reduce regulation and taxes on our member businesses.

Most notably, the legislature passed a historic tax cut for Iowa families and business owners. On the individual side we will see all Iowan’s paying a flat, fair rate of 3.9% by 2026. Corporate taxes will also fall over the course of the coming years from our current 9.8% (ranked 46th in the country) to 5.5%, one of the most competitive rates in the region. The legislature also passed long advocated for changes to aircraft parts and labor sales taxes on general aviation vehicles, allowing the Dubuque Regional Airport to maintain a competitive position with other regional airports in neighboring states – this bill awaits signature by the governor.

With workforce issues continued to slow the growth of business, we worked hard to promote pro-business workforce policies to reduce barriers to employment and support workers re-entering the workforce. An end of year deal included the Iowa Employer Child Tax Credit program which will provide more than $2 million to support a credit of 10-25% on qualified employer expenses to support employee access to childcare – this deal still awaits final signature by the Governor. Childcare providers now have more flexibility in hiring and staffing their rooms after the legislature increased the staffing ratios for 2- and 3-year-old care to align with national averages and allowed 16- and 17-year-old professionals to staff rooms without supervision.

The Chamber also supported legislation to expand access to the last-dollar scholarship by allowing part-time and summer students to fully access the benefits of the program, which were previously reserved for full-time students. The education appropriations legislation maintains a significant increase in funding for the last dollar scholarship program and increased the Iowa Tuition Grant – which supports Iowa’s private colleges including Loras College, Clarke University, and University of Dubuque – by around $1.3 million.

We also fought hard for our small business owners in the restaurant and hospitality industry, supporting efforts to better regulate third-party delivery services and protect restauranteurs intellectual property and liability in such transactions. We also supported efforts to simplify the three-tier alcohol system in Iowa. Both efforts have passed and await signature by the governor.

This year’s legislative session lasted much longer than we had thought it would but significant work on behalf of Iowans and the business community was accomplished. We look forward to continuing to advance the priorities of the business community and will continue to advocate for workforce solutions as our businesses continue to struggle hiring and retaining top talent.

We thank our local legislative delegation: Senator Pam Jochum, Senator Carrier Koelker, Representative Shannon Lundgren, Representative Lindsay James, Representative Steve Bradley, and Representative Chuck Isenhart for their dedication to serving Iowa and Dubuque County residents.

Dear Members of the Partnership:

College Athletics have changed dramatically in the last 12 months. The Name, Image, and Likeness for athletes and/or teams can be a powerful way of promoting you and your business. 2022 Best Places to Work in Kentucky Rankings Announced

Envoy Mortgage, Ltd., ARGI, and Alpha Business Acquisitions, Inc. take top honors

Frankfort, Ky. (June 9, 2022) – Envoy Mortgage, Ltd., ARGI, and Alpha Business Acquisitions, Inc. were ranked the 2022 Best Places to Work in Kentucky by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM).

During the 18th Annual Best Places to Work in Kentucky awards ceremony, presented by ClearPath Mutual Insurance Company, more than 900 attendees joined in celebrating the 100 Kentucky companies recognized for their commitment to focus, measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence.

The companies who made the 2022 list were announced in March and the ranked list was announced on stage at the awards ceremony. The 100 winning companies participated in a comprehensive survey process and were then ranked according to those results. The list consists of three categories: small companies of 15-149 employees, medium companies of 150-499 employees and large companies consisting of more than 500 employees (categories based on number of U.S. employees, only Kentucky employees surveyed).

Envoy Mortgage, Ltd., the top winner in the large category, is a privately owned mortgage bank that is 100% focused on residential lending. They provide home loans throughout the U.S. for consumers looking to purchase a home or refinance into a more favorable financial situation. Envoy Mortgage, Ltd has made the list for six years and was previously ranked sixth in the large category.

ARGI, the top winner in the medium category, has a mission to improve the lives of their clients, colleagues, and communities through their heart of service. Unlike many financial services companies, they have embraced a ‘we before me’ approach to service, utilizing a team of advisors and consultants to service their clients’ needs, instead of relying on the knowledge or skills of a single advisor. ARGI has made the list for 11 years and was previously ranked seventh in the medium category.

Alpha Business Acquisitions, Inc., the top winner in the small category, provides the upmost quality sales experience to customers, extensive training, growth, and friendly culture to employees, and long-term retention of customers to our clients. They go above and beyond to develop their team in sales, customer service, and leadership training to all hit their goals individually and as a team. Alpha Business Acquisitions, Inc. has made the list for three years and last year was previously ranked 20th in the small category.

Now in its 18th year, the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program has recognized a combined 333 unique Kentucky companies with 243 of those making the list more than once. Special recognition to the two companies that have made the list all 18 years - Dean Dorton and KORT.

The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) state council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce are proud to host the Best Places initiative, as both organizations support the value of workplace excellence as a key component in moving Kentucky forward.

“HR professionals are the CEO's strategic partner in creating an adaptive advantage for Kentucky's employers. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program recognizes those employers who set an exemplary standard of excellence for both employee engagement and business success,” said KYSHRM Chair, Amanda Huddleston, SHRM-CP, CSP.

According to Kentucky Chamber President and CEO, Ashli Watts, “In order to help Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able to educate and employ current Kentuckians, while also creating workplaces that attract talent from outside of the state. The Best Places program does just that.”

Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a great day!

Indiana Vision 2025: A Plan for Hoosier Prosperity

The mission: “Indiana will be a global leader in innovation and economic opportunity where enterprises and citizens prosper.”

In early 2012, the Indiana Chamber officially unveiled its new long-range economic development plan called Indiana Vision 2025.

This fifth biennial Report Card evaluates Indiana’s performance compared to the other 49 states, identifying areas of progress as well as focuses for additional improvement. The data serve as a starting point for regional discussions, as well as policy and program enhancements.

Cathi Hight of Hight Performance Group and one of the top Chamber Speakers in America: Signs Your Board Needs An Overhaul

“One frequently overlooked means of preparing for the future is through a high-performing, strategically focused board of directors (BOD). Most (organizations) don’t utilize a true, functioning BOD beyond the minimum statutory requirements, and those that do have a functioning BOD often lack directors whose competencies and experiences are well-aligned to anticipate and execute on potential future opportunities. In both instances, the business lacks the right people in the right place to see beyond the day to day and craft a winning vision of the future.”

~ Michael Mangum and Ed Rowell, Fails Management Institute

I was conducting online research on developing future-focused boards of directors and I stumbled upon the FMI article How to Create a Future-Ready Board of Directors. Although FMI as a management and investment firm serves engineering and construction companies, they offer wise advice on creating and leveraging boards of directors to navigate uncertainty and position organizations for long-term success.

In my experience as a certified Motorola University instructor for continuous improvement and benchmarking, I know the importance of competitive and comparative benchmarking. Competitive benchmarking is when we learn best practices from peers in our industry. Comparative benchmarking helps us glean insights from those outside of our industry who do things well that would benefit us.

What I found very insightful is this infographic that describes Five Signs Your Board Needs an Overhaul. In working with associations and chamber of commerce leaders and boards across North America, I’ve heard about and experienced boards that exhibit one or more of these signs.

Your Board Needs an Overhaul | Hight Performance Group

Any combination of these can impede an organization’s ability to navigate future trends and be positioned for success. This can create a comfort around the status quo, a reluctance to change, and prevent real and needed change over time.

Which of these signs are prevalent with your board?

How can you develop a board of directors to lead and position your organization for future success?

Carroll Chamber Of Commerce And CADC Executive Director, Shannon Landauer, Accepts Position With Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation

Executive Director of the Carroll Chamber of Commerce and Carroll Area Development Corporation (CADC), Shannon Landauer, announced Friday that her tenure in Carroll is coming to an end next month.

Landauer joined the Carroll Chamber of Commerce in 2014, and prior to that, she served as the Boone County Development Agency Executive Director. She says it was a difficult decision to make, but the move to a larger region was the next logical step in her career.

Landauer’s influence on Carroll’s economic environment is overwhelmingly positive. From helping businesses in the area navigate the challenges of a global pandemic to facilitating a joint effort between the CADC and City of Carroll to contract with the Retail Coach to bring new businesses to town as well as support existing ones, she and her staff are always looking for ways to better the community. She says she will be leaving behind a top-notch team to carry on the Chamber and CADC’s mission.

She says the Carroll-area is well-positioned to make great strides in the coming years.

Her final day with the Carroll Chamber and CADC is June 16. Hear More: 1380 WCDM

Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber hires executive director

Former newspaper publisher Andy Bruns starts July 1

Andy Bruns, a former regional newspaper publisher for Lee Enterprises, has been tapped as executive director of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce, the chamber announced June 4.

Bruns replaces Christopher Finley, who resigned in March to become director of marketing and public relations for LewisGale Regional Health System. Cheryl Ward has been serving as interim executive director.

A Southern Illinois University journalism graduate, Bruns had been regional publisher for Lee Enterprises since April 2020. He oversaw The Roanoke Times and Lynchburg News & Advance, among other publications. Before that, he held roles with Gannett and GateHouse Media.

“He has extensive leadership experience having spearheaded marketing and media organizations across the country for decades,” Zach Wimmer, president of the chamber’s board, said in a statement.

Bruns has served on multiple nonprofit and chamber of commerce boards. He and his family have vacationed at Smith Mountain Lake since 2016, and moved there full time in April 2020. Read more: Virginia Business

Kentucky Secretary of State talks elections with Knox Chamber of Commerce

Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams addressed the Knox County Chamber of Commerce last Tuesday during a virtual meeting where he discussed the current state of the election system in Kentucky.

Adams, a native of Paducah, served as Deputy General Counsel to Governor Ernie Fletcher before moving to Washington to accept an appointment as Counsel to the U.S. Deputy Attorney General in the second Bush Administration.

Since then, Adams has represented several national political committees, numerous national political figures, and statewide campaign efforts in all 50 states after moving to full-time private practice in election law, first as General Counsel to the Republican Governors Association, and later opening a national practice in the field. In 2016, Adams was appointed to the Kentucky State Board of Elections before being inaugurated as Secretary of State on January 6, 2020.

“I want to give you just a quick update about the state of our election system—what we did last year to accommodate the pandemic and ensure people could vote, what lessons we learned and what we’ve done on a permanent basis to adopt some changes that worked out pretty well from both sides perspectives and then I’ll make sure I’ll leave plenty of time for some feedback anybody has,” Adams said.

Adams said the first bill he proposed and ultimately got passed was a bill requiring a photo ID be presented in order to vote in an election. Read more: Times Tribune

Keck's 'city' address looks to tear down walls

During his “State of the City” address to the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce June luncheon crowd, Somerset Mayor Alan Keck talked about the concept of “building” frequently.

Building new things in the city. Building something positive. And, ultimately, having the wisdom not to build walls that divide.

“It’s been said that whatever good things we build end up building us,” said Keck, “and there’s no truer statement for what’s happening in our community. It’s certainly been true for me.

When I took office ... it had been some time since opportunity had knocked on Somerset’s door. We needed that opportunity. We needed to make our city relevant again. We needed to make it more vibrant and energetic,” he added. “... We built a new door, and we invited opportunity to come in.”

Keck said that for years, he’s listened to Somerset residents dream about what their community could be, including a more active downtown area, and he’s resolved to make those dreams a reality. He mentioned projects which he’s made a focus as being among these things — a downtown market, outdoor art, and the opportunity to increase tourism by linking to Kentucky’s famous Bourbon Trail, an aim for which Keck worked to lure Horse Soldier Bourbon to town.

He challenged members of the community to be Somerset’s “best ambassadors” — said Keck, “If you’re not excited about Somerset and Pulaski County, how will anyone else (feel that way)?” — and said that was the origin of the “seemyset” slogan and hashtag, encouraging people to tell their own stories about why they love the area.

“That will look different for each of you,” he said. “It might mean Lake Cumberland and all that it has to offer. ... It might mean the historic downtown that’s filled with cars the fourth weekend seven or eight months a year. It might mean the Fountain Square. It could mean agriculture, and maybe someday, bourbon. Whatever that destination is, whatever that thing that gets you excited is, we want you to tell that story.” Read more: Commonwealth Journal

Greater Green Bay Chamber Named Finalist for National Award

Green Bay, Wis.- (June 18, 2018) – The Greater Green Bay Chamber has been named a finalist for the 2018 Chamber of the Year award, presented by Alexandria, Va.-based Association of Chamber of Commerce Executive.

The award is the most prestigious and competitive recognition presented annually by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE). ACCE is an association of more than 8,000 professionals from 1,300 chambers, including 93 of the top 100 U.S. metro areas.

The Chamber of the Year award recognizes the leadership role chambers have in their communities. Those honored with the Chamber of the Year designation have demonstrated organizational strength and made an impact on key community priorities, such as education, transportation, business development and quality of life.

Chamber of the Year winners will be announced at the 2018 ACCE Annual Convention in Des Moines, Iowa.

“Wow! What an honor to have the Greater Green Bay Chamber named as one of the best chambers of commerce in the entire country. Congratulations goes out from the chamber board to our President & CEO Laurie Radke and her team for their unrelenting focus and passion to strengthen member businesses by enhancing economic and workforce development, resulting in improved quality of life in the Greater Green Bay community,” stated Craig Aderhold, chairman of the chamber board and EVP head of commercial banking
for Wisconsin Bank and Trust.

Chambers interested in competing for the award first must qualify by participating in a vigorous multi-stage process. Organizations entering the Chamber of the Year competition must meet minimum thresholds in at least three of five key performance areas, including net revenue and assets, membership account retention, and membership dollar retention.

Qualifying for Chamber of the Year is a rigorous process. Chambers compete based on meeting key performance criteria on the ACCE Annual Operations Survey. Qualifying chambers enter the competition with a written application addressing all aspects of organizational operation and programmatic work. Applications are scored by peer chamber executives to determine finalists. Winners are selected from among finalists based on an in-person interview before a panel of experienced chamber professionals.

This year's competition drew numerous entries from chambers throughout the U.S and Canada. To ensure the fairest competition, applicants are grouped into five categories based on: annual revenue, membership, area population and other factors. Contact: Niina Baum, marketing communications manager, 920-593-3423 or nbaum@greatergbc.org

New nonstop flights could bring investment and talent to Madison

Make no mistake, the daily nonstop flights between Madison and San Francisco, starting June 7, will save you time and possibly money on your next trip to the Bay Area. But that’s not why local business leaders are hailing the new direct route by United Airlines as a couple years in the making.

“I’ve had people say to me, ‘Great, you’ve saved me a couple hours.’ And other people tell me that having to get a [connecting] flight from Denver isn’t that bad,” says Zach Brandon, president of the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce. Make no mistake, the daily nonstop flights between Madison and San Francisco, starting June 7, will save you time and possibly money on your next trip to the Bay Area. But that’s not why local business leaders are hailing the new direct route by United Airlines as a coup years in the making.

“But this isn’t about Madison finding San Francisco. This is about San Francisco finding Madison,” he says.

While Madison’s reputation builds as a growing technology center, Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area firmly occupy the epicenter for the nation’s tech industry and venture capital firms.
Some $30 billion or 44 percent of venture capital in the U.S. is invested in startups in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley. That has resulted in the reluctance of venture capitalists there to consider backing startups elsewhere.

San Francisco is the 15th nonstop destination from the Dane County Regional Airport, albeit the first West Coast city. But Brandon says San Francisco was “the one” Madison officials were seeking. “This is the singular destination that can make a measurable impact on Madison’s economy,” Brandon says.

According to airport officials, the daily United flight from Madison to San Francisco will generate annually more than $622,000 in airport revenue, almost $1.4 million in visitor spending in the Madison area and $116,000 in airfare savings for passengers. Read more: Madison Magazine

Chamber Executive Ongoing Education Weekly New Idea: Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't - by Simon Sinek

Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling fulfilled. This is not a crazy, idealized notion. Today, in many successful organizations, great leaders create environments in which people naturally work together to do remarkable things.

In his work with organizations around the world, Simon Sinek noticed that some teams trust each other so deeply that they would literally put their lives on the line for each other. Other teams, no matter what incentives are offered, are doomed to infighting, fragmentation and failure. Why?

The answer became clear during a conversation with a Marine Corps general. "Officers eat last," he said. Sinek watched as the most junior Marines ate first while the most senior Marines took their place at the back of the line. What's symbolic in the chow hall is deadly serious on the battlefield: Great leaders sacrifice their own comfort—even their own survival—for the good of those in their care.

Too many workplaces are driven by cynicism, paranoia, and self-interest. But the best ones foster trust and cooperation because their leaders build what Sinek calls a "Circle of Safety" that separates the security inside the team from the challenges outside.

Sinek illustrates his ideas with fascinating true stories that range from the military to big business, from government to investment banking. More information: Barnes & Noble

Dozens of Wisconsin companies give millions in raises, bonuses, because of federal tax reform

More than 30 companies in Wisconsin have given raises and bonuses to their employees, donated to local charities, invested in new equipment, hired new employees, enhanced benefit packages, and reduced rates, all citing the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act that President Donald Trump signed into law last December.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce created an interactive tax map and Americans for Tax Reform compiled a comprehensive list of businesses giving raises, bonuses, and other savings to employees and customers in Wisconsin. The U.S. Treasury Department projects that the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act will result in 90 percent of wage earners receiving higher take-home pay.

Tax reform unleashed “a new era of growth for the American economy,” the chamber said. It notes that business leaders are already “investing back into their companies, rewarding their employees, and hiring more American workers.” Read more: Watchdog.org

TIF money could fix Janesville's housing shortage, developers say
To solve Janesville’s housing shortage, two real estate developers encouraged the city to consider using tax increment financing to spark new residential activity.
That suggestion was one of the biggest takeaways from Wednesday’s community housing and development forum. The city and Forward Janesville co-sponsored the event at the Pontiac Convention Center.
The forum, which drew about 75 people, explored the city’s need for multiple types of housing. It included a small-group brainstorming session, but when the event ran long, organizers decided to table the groups’ sharing of ideas for another date.
During an opening panel, Hovde Properties President Mike Slavish said developers are disinclined to build here because rents are so low. In downtown Madison, where Hovde is based, rents run between $2 and $2.50 per square foot.
In Janesville, that number is about 87 cents. But construction costs are generally the same between the cities, so it’s tough for developers to see a return on their investment—unless they’re receiving some sort of public incentive, he said.
Slavish proposed a pay-as-you-go TIF deal. The landowner would pay taxes, and the municipality would return a percentage of that payment, he said.
In Waunakee, Hovde negotiated a deal in which the city returned 85 percent of the project’s tax payment in the first decade after construction, and then 65 percent in years 11 through 20, Slavish said.
“The great thing about that is the municipality spends none of their own money. The developer pays them, and then they kick back a portion of that,” he said. “It’s really a pretty simple structure. It’s utilized by a lot of communities throughout the state of Wisconsin.”
In a particularly strong statement, Brent Dahlstrom of the Iowa-based Echo Development Group said his company likely wouldn’t consider building in a market if that municipality wasn’t willing to provide a financial break. Read more: Gazette Extra
