Pfizer plans $120M expansion for COVID pill manufacturing at Michigan facility

Pfizer is planning to invest another $120 million into its Kalamazoo-area manufacturing facility in an effort to expand production of its antiviral COVID drug, Paxlovid.
The pharmaceutical company said its latest expansion will create 250 new jobs and ramp up production of Paxlovid, an oral COVID-19 treatment available under emergency use authorization for people 12 and older with mild to moderate illness who are considered high risk of severe illness.
Pfizer announced plans to expand manufacturing capacity of Paxlovid last month, and shared more details Monday, June 6, during a press event at the company’s Portage campus. Production of Paxlovid is already underway and will be expanded over the next year, explained Mike McDermot, Pfizer’s chief global supply officer. Read more: M LIVE

Dubuque Area Chamber: Inside the Chamber Lobby

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

The legislature adjourned at 12:16am last Wednesday, calling the 2022 session of the 89th General Assembly to a close.

Throughout session the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce fought on behalf of our members to support workforce solutions, promote economic development, and reduce regulation and taxes on our member businesses.

Most notably, the legislature passed a historic tax cut for Iowa families and business owners. On the individual side we will see all Iowan’s paying a flat, fair rate of 3.9% by 2026. Corporate taxes will also fall over the course of the coming years from our current 9.8% (ranked 46th in the country) to 5.5%, one of the most competitive rates in the region. The legislature also passed long advocated for changes to aircraft parts and labor sales taxes on general aviation vehicles, allowing the Dubuque Regional Airport to maintain a competitive position with other regional airports in neighboring states – this bill awaits signature by the governor.

With workforce issues continued to slow the growth of business, we worked hard to promote pro-business workforce policies to reduce barriers to employment and support workers re-entering the workforce. An end of year deal included the Iowa Employer Child Tax Credit program which will provide more than $2 million to support a credit of 10-25% on qualified employer expenses to support employee access to childcare – this deal still awaits final signature by the Governor. Childcare providers now have more flexibility in hiring and staffing their rooms after the legislature increased the staffing ratios for 2- and 3-year-old care to align with national averages and allowed 16- and 17-year-old professionals to staff rooms without supervision.

The Chamber also supported legislation to expand access to the last-dollar scholarship by allowing part-time and summer students to fully access the benefits of the program, which were previously reserved for full-time students. The education appropriations legislation maintains a significant increase in funding for the last dollar scholarship program and increased the Iowa Tuition Grant – which supports Iowa’s private colleges including Loras College, Clarke University, and University of Dubuque – by around $1.3 million.

We also fought hard for our small business owners in the restaurant and hospitality industry, supporting efforts to better regulate third-party delivery services and protect restauranteurs intellectual property and liability in such transactions. We also supported efforts to simplify the three-tier alcohol system in Iowa. Both efforts have passed and await signature by the governor.

This year’s legislative session lasted much longer than we had thought it would but significant work on behalf of Iowans and the business community was accomplished. We look forward to continuing to advance the priorities of the business community and will continue to advocate for workforce solutions as our businesses continue to struggle hiring and retaining top talent.

We thank our local legislative delegation: Senator Pam Jochum, Senator Carrier Koelker, Representative Shannon Lundgren, Representative Lindsay James, Representative Steve Bradley, and Representative Chuck Isenhart for their dedication to serving Iowa and Dubuque County residents.

2022 Best Places to Work in Kentucky Rankings Announced

Envoy Mortgage, Ltd., ARGI, and Alpha Business Acquisitions, Inc. take top honors

Frankfort, Ky. (June 9, 2022) – Envoy Mortgage, Ltd., ARGI, and Alpha Business Acquisitions, Inc. were ranked the 2022 Best Places to Work in Kentucky by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM).

During the 18th Annual Best Places to Work in Kentucky awards ceremony, presented by ClearPath Mutual Insurance Company, more than 900 attendees joined in celebrating the 100 Kentucky companies recognized for their commitment to focus, measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence.

The companies who made the 2022 list were announced in March and the ranked list was announced on stage at the awards ceremony. The 100 winning companies participated in a comprehensive survey process and were then ranked according to those results. The list consists of three categories: small companies of 15-149 employees, medium companies of 150-499 employees and large companies consisting of more than 500 employees (categories based on number of U.S. employees, only Kentucky employees surveyed).

Envoy Mortgage, Ltd., the top winner in the large category, is a privately owned mortgage bank that is 100% focused on residential lending. They provide home loans throughout the U.S. for consumers looking to purchase a home or refinance into a more favorable financial situation. Envoy Mortgage, Ltd has made the list for six years and was previously ranked sixth in the large category.

ARGI, the top winner in the medium category, has a mission to improve the lives of their clients, colleagues, and communities through their heart of service. Unlike many financial services companies, they have embraced a ‘we before me’ approach to service, utilizing a team of advisors and consultants to service their clients’ needs, instead of relying on the knowledge or skills of a single advisor. ARGI has made the list for 11 years and was previously ranked seventh in the medium category.

Alpha Business Acquisitions, Inc., the top winner in the small category, provides the upmost quality sales experience to customers, extensive training, growth, and friendly culture to employees, and long-term retention of customers to our clients. They go above and beyond to develop their team in sales, customer service, and leadership training to all hit their goals individually and as a team. Alpha Business Acquisitions, Inc. has made the list for three years and last year was previously ranked 20th in the small category.

Now in its 18th year, the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program has recognized a combined 333 unique Kentucky companies with 243 of those making the list more than once. Special recognition to the two companies that have made the list all 18 years - Dean Dorton and KORT.

The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) state council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce are proud to host the Best Places initiative, as both organizations support the value of workplace excellence as a key component in moving Kentucky forward.

“HR professionals are the CEO's strategic partner in creating an adaptive advantage for Kentucky's employers. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program recognizes those employers who set an exemplary standard of excellence for both employee engagement and business success,” said KYSHRM Chair, Amanda Huddleston, SHRM-CP, CSP.

According to Kentucky Chamber President and CEO, Ashli Watts, “In order to help Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able to educate and employ current Kentuckians, while also creating workplaces that attract talent from outside of the state. The Best Places program does just that.”

Dubuque Chamber: Inside the Chamber Lobby

The Iowa House of Representatives on Wednesday was the first chamber to pass the income tax cuts telegraphed from the legislative session’s start, including an eventual 4% rate for all income brackets and a full exemption for retirees. The plan is similar to one backed by Gov. Kim Reynolds except it does not include her proposed corporate income tax cut. The Chamber is registered in support of this bill due to the positive impact it will have on pass-through businesses, however we continue to advocate for the inclusion of corporate income tax reform in a final package. The TH has more.

Kentucky Chamber shares legislative hopes for 2021 session, provides insight on covid-19 relief at Southeast Kentucky Chamber meeting

Pandemic relief and recovery were the main focuses of Kentucky Chamber President Ashli Watts during a virtual meeting hosted by the Southeast Kentucky Chamber on Thursday to discuss the state chamber’s priorities for the 2021 legislative session which kicks off in January.

Watts opened up Thursday’s meeting touching on covid-19 vaccines in Kentucky. She said she had spoken with Ky. Gov. Andy Beshear prior to the meeting and had been informed that all front-line health workers and first responders are scheduled to receive the vaccine by January, when EMT and EMS workers are expected to be vaccinated.

“66 percent of covid deaths in Kentucky have been in our long-term care facilities,” said Watts, noting that those facilities should be receiving the vaccine as early as December 15. She said the Kentucky Chamber is suggesting that those vaccines take place on site at the workplace.

From there, Watts transitioned to discuss the top priorities of the state chamber for the 2021 legislative session which, according to Watts, include: Infrastructure, covid-19 liability protections, modernization of the state’s unemployment insurance program, tax reform, substance use disorder and recovery, reform of the state’s criminal justice system, investing in education, focusing on childcare, and supporting Kentucky’s signature industries.

In terms of infrastructure, Watts said the Chamber is urging for a gas tax to help raise money to fix existing infrastructure as well as to provide for new infrastructure needs across the state.

“The gas tax is really a consumption-based tax where you can see the improvements,” said Watts. “We do not have enough money in our road fund to pay for our existing infrastructure, or to maintain [it].”

Watts said the tax will help to ensure the movement of expansion projects such as the Mountain Parkway expansion. She said she believes Gov. Beshear and the legislature are in support of the tax.

Covid-19-related liability protections for businesses was another hot topic for the chamber. Watts mentioned the notion of businesses facing litigation due to covid-19 contraction at their business. She said the federal bill relating to covid-19 liability protections has been “condensed quite a bit” to not include much protection for businesses but said the state chamber is promoting a bill that will allow for more protections on the state level.

“We want to make sure that as long as [businesses are] doing everything in their power to follow the law and keep people safe, we think there should be protection in that,” said Watts. “We have a strong sense that we will be able to approve this on the state level.”

When discussing unemployment insurance in Kentucky, Watts mentioned the $800 million federal loan Kentucky borrowed earlier in the year to replenish the unemployment system, due to the large number of covid-related claims, noting that the loan was necessary.

“How we pay that back is simply on the backs of employers,” she said, noting that employer stakes in unemployment will rise in 2021. “Know that we are really working on this and we are working on a solution to help everyone out.”

Watts ended her presentation by stating that anyone with questions, comments, or suggestions for the state Chamber should contact either their local chamber of commerce or the state chamber. New Berlin Chamber: Tentative 2021 Event Schedule Has Been Set

At last week's board meeting we discussed our tentative schedule of events for 2021. With many unknowns surrounding Covid-19 conditions, including distribution of the vaccines that are being distributed, we will move forward with a series of events beginning in February. We will start out virtually and move to in person events as conditions allow.

The current plan calls for the following activities

·     February 182021 Annual Legislative Update meeting. This will be a virtual video conference meeting.

·     April 22, Annual Luncheon, Business of the Year meeting. Tentatively scheduled at New Berlin Hills. This may change to either a fully virtual event or a hybrid with a small socially distanced event that is live streamed.

·     June 21our 22nd Annual Golf Outing at New Berlin Hills.

·     August 26, Membership meeting scheduled as a breakfast event from 7:30 - 9 am.

·     We are looking into the possibility of holding a New Berlin Night at a Brewers game on Saturday August 21That would be a 7:30 p.m. game. Again depending on conditions with the virus, this would be a fun city celebration after a year and a half or so of Covid restrictions.

·     November 18Membership meeting from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m.

·     December 9Annual Holiday Party.

They say you can’t go home again, but Doreen Buntrock is proof that is not true.

As the former Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director steps back into the role she held for eight and a half years, from 1997 to 2005, she brings with her a refreshing mix of past, present and future.

“A lot has changed since I left, but at the same time so much is the same,” she said. “There have been advances with technology and social media and some businesses are different, but Hartford is still a warm and welcoming community.”

When Buntrock left the Chamber 15 years ago, she never dreamed she would one day be returning to her previous post. However, she is glad life led her back this way.

“It never really left me,” she said. “I love Hartford. The people are great and there is so much to experience here.”

With a tagline of “It’s happening here in Hartford,” the community is “the heart of Washington County,” said Buntrock, and she has big plans for the area. During her first go-round at the Chamber, Buntrock was a force to be reckoned with, kicking off major community staples like the Balloon Rally, Hartford Leadership program, and Chamber Check program. She also started the WIN partnership with the West Bend Area Chamber and helped put Hartford on the map with a Discover Wisconsin tourism promotion.

“It’s so much fun to be creative and do things for a community that is open to it,” she said.

From the industrial park to the business community to the schools, Hartford is solid, said Buntrock, and she hopes to keep building on that foundation.

“There is always more work to do,” she said. “Our job is to nurture and promote, and this is an amazing place to do that. We already have so many great places and we want to bring in the new. We want people to stop here and stay for awhile, not just pass through.”

While COVID-19 and its implications have changed certain things, there is still a lot to do and the show will go in, Buntrock emphasized.

“There are things you can still do safely like stroll the Riverwalk, attend events like Midnight Maddness on Dec. 11, or even just drive through our beautifully-decorated neighborhoods,” she said. “Things are still happening, just in a different way. It’s our job at the Chamber to be a strong partner and be there for our businesses at this time.”

With four daughters and 10 grandchildren that range in age from four months to 20 years old, the Chamber director also hopes to revive a spirit of volunteering in the city. “I want the young people to see the great quality of life we have and learn to give back,” she said. “I am hoping individuals of all ages will embrace that and participate in any way they can.”

Another way to help is to “shop local,” she said, noting that the Chamber Check program is an easy way to do just that. “That’s the best thing you can do for your community right now. The checks work like gift certificates and can be used at any of the Chamber member businesses.”

As she begins her new but also familiar venture, Buntrock does so with great excitement and high hopes for Hartford.

“We already have so much to offer and we are just going to keep growing this wonderful and inviting community,” she said. “When you come to Hartford, you’re not a stranger. We welcome you and we want you here.”

Lt. Governor presents Jackson County Chamber of Commerce with new state flag

Today Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann made his way down to the Mississippi Gulf Coast where he spoke at an event hosted by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and presented Mississippi’s new state flag.

Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann stopped by the Pascagoula Performing Arts Center where he spoke on many topics, including some of what the legislature accomplished this year. “We re-organized the board that does all the prep for teaching our children how to do technical things. We devoted 75 million dollars to broadband expansion and that was matched by the co-op so we get 150 million dollars reaching in more than 50 thousand Mississippi homes that will have access to broadband to teach their children with.”

One of Hosemann’s proudest legislative moments of 2020 is the adoption of Mississippi’s new state flag, which he proudly presented to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. “I think it’s reflective of the fact that we got 72 percent of the vote. Now, that’s almost impossible. If you’re a really good politician you might get 58 percent, we had a record turnout of 1.2 million people and 72 percent voted for the new flag.”

Members of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce say it is an honor to have Lt. Governor Hosemann visit the Gulf Coast and present them with the new state flag. Jackson County Chamber of Commerce CEO Paige Roberts said, “This is honestly one of the greatest honors of my life. The chamber and I worked very hard in support of changing the flag and then in support of getting this flag. We are so proud and thrilled that the people of Mississippi spoke such volumes.” Read more: WXXV 25

Effingham County Chamber of Commerce has been named 2020 Chamber of the Year by ACCE

The Effingham County Chamber of Commerce has been named 2020 Chamber of the Year by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE). The award is the most prestigious and competitive recognition presented by ACCE and is the only globally-recognized industry award that honors top chambers of commerce.

The Chamber of the Year award recognizes the leadership role chambers have in their communities. Those recognized demonstrate organizational strength and make an impact on key community priorities.

The Effingham County Chamber was recognized September 30 during ACCE’s Future of Chambers Summit.

“Receiving this award is an unbelievable honor and is due to the dedication and work of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, volunteer teams and professional staff to make sure the Chamber meets the needs of our growing membership as well as building and strengthening relationships that stimulate the regional economy. This award is especially meaningful this year as we have had to transition our programs and services for stronger support of our local businesses as they endured the many hardships that the coronavirus pandemic has caused”, said Chamber President & CEO Norma Lansing.

2020 Chamber Board Chairman commented: “What does hard work, teamwork, a great membership and the desire to just be better get you? Chamber of the Year for the entire United States and Canada! Congratulations to Norma, Becky and Jamie for their hard work, and thank you to our membership for being so involved.” Speer noted that every year the Chamber solicits volunteers from the local community and we have a great volunteer team. Please call the Chamber and see how you can get involved.

Four chambers were recognized as Chamber of the Year recipient based on community demographics and on factors including net revenue, net assets, membership account retention, and membership dollar retention. Other winners were Vail Valley Partnership (Colo.); Ocala/Marion County Chamber & Economic Partnership (Fla.) and Tulsa Regional Chamber (Okla.).

Grand Rapids Area Chamber: COVID-19 Liability Legislation Sent to Governor Whitmer

It was a busy day in the Michigan Legislature that included a flurry of COVID-19 related legislation being passed very early this morning.

Most notably, the Michigan Legislature approved legislation that expanded unemployment benefits and created COVID-19 liability protections for businesses after reaching a deal with Governor Whitmer.

The Michigan Supreme Court Order that invalidated post-April 30 Executive Orders means the Legislature needed to act to extend unemployment benefits to 26 weeks and continue protections for employees quarantining due to COVID-19. The liability protections, which have been a priority for the Grand Rapids Chamber, were previously held up, but a deal was able to be struck between leaders to approve both measures after some tweaks.

A summary of the legislation can be found here.

The liability protections protects businesses that are in compliance with all federal, state and local requirements from being held liable if someone believes they contacted COVID-19 at the business. Special thanks to Kent County Representatives Tommy Brann and Thomas Albert for sponsoring this important legislation, and to the other West Michigan legislators who co-sponsored and supported the bills.

Also included were protection for employers from unemployment insurance charges. Benefits paid to those laid off will not be charged to the account of an employer. This expires on December 31, 2020.

Other legislation passed yesterday included prohibiting the firing of an employee who stays home with concerns they have COVID-19, and allowing public meetings to continue meeting virtually until January 1.

Indiana Chamber to Hold Top Industry Events Virtually in October

Two leading industry events take place virtually this month from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. On October 13, compliance and regulatory topics are center stage at the 2020 Indiana Environmental Conference, which is held in partnership with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Two weeks later, on October 28-29, the 2020 Indiana Business Tax Conference highlights new federal and state information.

“In the virtual format, attendees can access all education sessions live and/or later at their own pace from the comfort of their own home or office. Also important for these industries is that a variety of continuing education credits will be available,” says Indiana Chamber President Kevin Brinegar.

Both agendas are designed to help an organization “be prepared and avoid expensive fines for not being up to date, as well as take into account issues related to the pandemic and challenges expected in the coming year.”

The Indiana Environmental Conference, sponsored by Plews Shadley Racher & Braun, includes sessions on changes to the Clean Water Act, inspection tips, legal matters related to COVID-19 and current advantages of solar, storage and sustainability.

The all new program at the Indiana Business Tax Conference features a number of tax matters. Among them: challenges of the mobile workforce, making sense of state tax and economic development incentives, how to leverage the power of data, the cost of performance and the latest tax and legal issues impacting tech and innovation businesses.

Both conferences cost $399 per person for Indiana Chamber members; the list price is $499. A 20% group discount is available for organizations sending two or more employees to either event. Register to attend at www.indianachamber.com/conferences.

Additional sponsors for the Indiana Environmental Conference are: BCA Environmental Consultants, LLC; Ice Miller LLP; Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn, LLP; SESCO Group; Taft Law; and Trinity Consultants.

The Indiana Business Tax Conference sponsors are: DMA – DuCharme, McMillen & Associates, Inc.; Dentons Bingham Greenebaum; Indiana Michigan Power; and MCM CPAs & Advisors.

Mississippi public universities help to rebuild economy as state recovers from COVID-19

Mississippi public universities are doing everything they can to help rebuild the state of Mississippi’s economy as it recovers from the impact of COVID-19.

Staff and faculty members are developing organizations, creating marketing plans and ensuring that the community is adapting to the “new normal.”

Here’s how the universities are doing their part for the community:

Jackson State University’s College of Health Sciences, along with the School of Public Health, is partnering with the CDC to develop a yearlong marketing campaign aimed at reducing and preventing the disproportionate rate of COVID-19 transmissions among African Americans ages 18-29. AdditionallyJSU’s Division of Research and Economic Development has unveiled a program called EnRICH (Engaging Research and Innovators for Commercialization at HBCUs). EnRICH aims to impact equity, diversity and inclusion in innovations and train faculty and students to critically evaluate the commercial potential of new health care innovations. Also, it will train them to conduct market assessments, help support intellectual property protection, and teach them about the commercialization development process in an established startup accelerator program.

Mississippi State University and its College of Business have partnered with the Mississippi Small Business Development Center to produce and provide a nine-part video series aimed at helping family-owned companies and establishments navigate the pandemic and economic disruption. Covering a wide variety of COVID-19 topics, the videos address the survival, growth and sustainability of these businesses and the special needs of owners in adapting to the “new normal.”

University of Mississippi created the Community-University Partnership Series for campus and community leaders to explore partnerships in supply drives and fundraisers, meeting technology needs, and providing volunteer and internship opportunities. The university’s Office of Community Engagement is doing this in partnership with UM Economic Development, the LOU Chamber of Commerce, Lafayette Oxford Foundation for Tomorrow, United Way of Oxford-Lafayette County, Mississippi Alliance for Nonprofits and Philanthropy, and Volunteer Mississippi. Additionally, the Mississippi Small Business Development Center, whose state office is housed at UM, is providing counseling about federal and state business stimulus programs and assisting entrepreneurs obtain loans and other funding.

This summer, The University of Southern Mississippi’s National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) published the first version of “COVID-19 Considerations for Sport and Entertainment Venues and Events.” It was composed by a select group of industry practitioners on the NCS4′s COVID-19 Task Force, the guide is designed to aid professionals in their decision-making regarding event planning, event operations and other business operations based on federal, state and local municipal requirements.
