2019 Best Places to Work in Kentucky Rankings Announced; Edward Jones, L&N Federal Credit Union and Ward, Hocker & Thornton PLLC take top honors

Frankfort, Ky. (April 23, 2019) – Edward Jones, L&N Federal Credit Union and Ward, Hocker & Thornton PLLC were ranked the 2019 Best Places to Work in Kentucky by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM).

During the 15th Annual Best Places to Work in Kentucky awards ceremony, presented by Lifestyle Health Plans, more than 1,200 attendees joined in celebrating the 100 Kentucky companies who were recognized for their commitment to focus, measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence.

The list of companies who made the 2019 list was announced in January and the ranked list was announced on stage at the awards ceremony. Click here to view winner rankings!

The 100 winning companies participated in a comprehensive survey process and were then ranked according to those results. The list consists of three categories: small companies of 15-149 employees, medium companies of 150-499 employees and large companies consisting of more than 500 employees (categories based on number of U.S. employees, only Kentucky employees surveyed).

Edward Jones, the top winner in the large category, offers associates flexible, family-friendly workplaces and gratifying work helping clients in neighborhoods where they live and work. Financial advisors and branch office administrator teams who serve clients well earn the firm’s highest honors. Edward Jones has made the list for 14 years and last year was ranked second in the large category.

L&N Federal Credit Union, the top winner in the medium category, has been in business since 1954. With assets over $1.2 billion dollars and an array of products and services, L&N can offer everything necessary for someone's personal or business finances. L&N Federal Credit Union was ranked third in the medium category last year and has made the list four years in a row.

Ward, Hocker & Thornton PLLC, the top winner in the small category, is a law firm with attorneys who understand the unique challenges their clients face and works aggressively to find the most cost-effective and timely solutions possible. Ward, Hocker & Thornton PLLC has made the list for 6 years and last year was ranked third in the small category.

Now in its 15th year, the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program has recognized a combined 291 unique Kentucky companies with 199 of those making the list more than once. Special recognition to the two companies that have made the list all 15 years - Dean Dorton and KORT.

The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) state council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce are proud to host the Best Places initiative, as both organizations support the value of workplace excellence as a key component in moving Kentucky forward.

"HR professionals are the CEO's strategic partner in creating an adaptive advantage for Kentucky's employers. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program recognizes those employers who set an exemplary standard of excellence for both employee engagement and business success,” said KYSHRM Chair, Scott McGarvey, SHRM-SCP, SPHR.

According to Kentucky Chamber President and CEO, Dave Adkisson, “In order to help Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able to educate and employ current Kentuckians, while also creating workplaces that attract talent from outside of the state. The Best Places program does just that.”

Aurora Regional Chamber's Joseph Henning to Step Down for New Role
Andy Guzauskas, board chair for the Aurora Regional Chamber, has announced that Joseph Henning, IOM, CAE, president and CEO, has resigned his position to accept a similar role out of state.

“While the board and I are sad to lose Joe,” Guzauskas adds, “we appreciate the leadership and passion for the community that Joe has exhibited during the 14 years he served the chamber. We absolutely wish him the best in his new role.”

“The opportunity to serve the Aurora Regional Chamber, its membership, and the community for the past 14 years has been the professional experience of a lifetime,” Henning states. “I am thankful for the personal and professional growth this organization and its leadership has allowed me.”

Among the accomplishments of his tenure, the chamber reports:
The chamber was named Illinois Chamber of the Year by the Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives;
It achieved consecutive five-star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber Foundation in 2012 and 2017;
It added programs and services to provide benefit to members;
It urged the establishment of a public-private partnership (Invest Aurora) to spearhead economic development efforts;
It coordinated collaborations with education, business, and government to combine resources and reduce duplication of services; and
It established workforce development priorities to include the voice of employers.

“Workforce development and education attainment have long been a passion of mine,” Henning states. “Working with educational institutions and employers to identify opportunities and find solutions to our employers’ needs continues to be one of the most exciting experiences.”

From the established Pathways to Prosperity and Manufacturing Careers Internship Program to the newer Second Chance program, supporting students with disabilities, and the upskilling of current employees, the Aurora Regional Chamber and its many collaborative partners have established itself as a leader in providing solutions to a nationwide issue, Henning adds.

“I will be forever grateful for the team members, board members, volunteers, and community leaders that have been champions for the Aurora region with me,” Henning concludes. “The Chamber is a remarkable place to work. The region is a wonderful community in which to live. It is a perfect time for the Chamber to bring in fresh leadership. I look forward to following the continued impact that the Aurora Chamber accomplishes.”

Henning’s last day will be Friday, May 24, 2019.

Guzauskas states the board is currently working on the details of a transition plan with Henning and will begin a search in the near future.

Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance Aims To Address ‘Pillars of Rural Prosperity’ With New Legislation Agenda

Business leaders across the area are focused on tackling key issues hampering economic development in Northern Michigan.
The Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance is made up of nearly 8,000 members of the region’s business community unveiled their legislation agenda for the next two years.
They outlined what they call the four pillars of rural prosperity.
  •  Rural business development.
  •  Talent attraction to rural areas.
  •   Rural and small city housing development
  •    And access to quality child care.

“There are just a lot of problems we as chambers have commonalities with. We do better when we come together,” Gaylord Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Taylar Akin, said.
The Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance is made up of nine local chambers of commerce, spanning 14 counties in Northern Michigan.
Their agenda?
To work through complex policy issues with lawmakers to benefit rural areas across the state and address those four key issues.
“It gives us guiding principles so when we are in Lansing and talking with local legislators that we are able to say hey these are the four things that are super important and hot topics for us right now,” Akin, explained.
“All of our members together are struggling with these same issues, so it gives a larger voice and presence in Lansing when bills come up,” she, added.
The four pillars are issues, largely intertwined.
“We are going to need some state support to make this work, otherwise it just can’t happen,” Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce President Carlin Smith, said.
Though Smith believes the biggest one is the lack of affordable housing.
“Obviously it’s all about talent and we need to attract talent to Northern Michigan, but I think housing is the component of the talent attraction, which might be our greatest barrier,” Smith, said.
Barriers that can be broken with help; and with teamwork the voice of businesses in rural Michigan will now likely be louder in Lansing than ever before.
“What we need to do in rural communities is to find a way to become competitive collectively with more urban centers, to try and bring workers and professionals to our region,” Smith, said. Read more: 9 and 10 NEWS

Charlestown officials hope $315 million in new River Ridge infrastructure work will redevelop land

It's hard to miss the impact of River Ridge. Dozens of industrial buildings are now up along State Road 62, and plenty of other new businesses have popped up in the area.

River Ridge has transformed the section of southern Indiana that encompasses Jeffersonville, Charlestown and Utica. The commerce center has created nearly 10,000 jobs. But there's still a lot of land left to develop, particularly on the north side of the industrial park's land near Charlestown. Read more: WDRB TV

St. Mary Medical Center CEO Janice Ryba Honored as Business Person of the Year by Hobart Chamber of Commerce

“Healthcare is about everyone working together as a team for the benefit of patients,” St. Mary Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Janice Ryba explained to business leaders at a recent chamber event. “Our vision is to be an exceptional choice for high quality healthcare in the communities we serve.”
Ryba’s passion for excellence, her persistent focus on community partnerships and outreach and the hospital’s collaboration with local school districts and career centers, prompted the Hobart Chamber of Commerce to name Ryba Business Person of the Year for 2019. The award was presented at the Chamber’s annual recognition dinner on March 1.
Ryba credits the honor to the hospital’s physicians and clinical staff, to her administrative team and to St. Mary Medical Center’s many support staff and volunteers.
Ryba first brought passion and determination with her to St. Mary Medical Center when she became CEO in 2007. Since then, she and her administrative team have established the hospital as a regional leader in healthcare excellence.
St. Mary Medical Center has been recognized in recent years for its high quality care and outcomes in cardiology, neurology and stroke care, orthopedics, oncology, maternity care, bariatrics, vascular care, robotic surgery and other patient services, as well as for overall patient experience, care and safety.

Major achievements include construction of the $17 million, 55,000-square-foot Valparaiso Health Center in 2013, expansion of services at the Portage Health Centers in 2014 and the hospital’s addition of a $40 million Surgical Pavilion and ICU in 2015. Mississippi Scholars’ challenge: ‘Do something great’

Lincoln County’s Mississippi Scholars — all 169 of them — walked away with more than $115,000 in scholarship money Sunday to help them pursue their dreams. The exact amount was $118,400, which came from colleges and businesses, and is part of the recognition to the graduating seniors for years of hard work and dedication.

Students from Brookhaven High School, Brookhaven Academy, Mississippi School of the Arts, Bogue Chitto Attendance Center, Enterprise Attendance Center, Loyd Star Attendance Center and West Lincoln Attendance Center were honored during an hour-long ceremony at Easthaven Baptist Church, which was followed by a reception for the honorees, their families and scholarship sponsors. Some of the students were part of the Mississippi Scholars Tech Master program, which honors students who not only completed the rigorous academic regime but added career-tech classes as well. More than 70 percent of the jobs in Mississippi are skilled-labor positions, said volunteer Kenny Goza. Since 2005, when Goza and Kay Burton with the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce started the program here, more than 1,500 students have been recognized and earned more than $1.5 million in scholarships. Mississippi Scholars’ goal is to build up students starting in the eighth grade and give them tools and encouragement that will take them on to bigger and better things after high school. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer brings road show to Cadillac

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer opened her remarks at the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce’s 42nd Governor’s Breakfast by leading with her bipartisan bona fides and connections to local Republicans.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder told her it was essential to come to the breakfast, she said.

Her stepson is working for McCurdy, Wotilla and Porteous, a Cadillac-based law firm with close ties to the Republican Party.

She’d even stayed the previous night at the home of Dave Porteous, the Reed City-based attorney and notable Republican.

Whitmer, a Democrat who earned just 35.7 percent of Wexford County’s votes in the gubernatorial election, called Republican Congressman John Moolenaar, who represents Cadillac in the U.S. House of Representatives, a friend and stressed the importance of making friendships across the aisle.

Whitmer then moved on to her budget — which she calls a a statement of values, citing Michigan’s middle-class legacy.

“We’ve stopped investing in ourselves,” she said. “We can make a bold decision today.”

The governor launched a slideshow that detailed Michigan’s spending habits and the goals of her controversial budget.

Rep. Daire Rendon later called it Whitmer’s “road show” that she’s been sharing across the state on her “Road to Opportunity” campaign.

Whitmer is working to drum up support for her 45-cent gas tax.

It’s necessary, the governor said, because Michigan has spent decades avoiding investments in infrastructure, taking money from the school aid fund to fill potholes, harming students and failing to rebuild roads. Read more: Cadillac News

Multimillion-dollar venue promises to bring 'a day at the races' to Oak Grove

A new multimillion-dollar horse racing and entertainment venue thundered out of the starting gate Tuesday with the groundbreaking of the $150 million Oak Grove Racing & Gaming facility in Oak Grove.

The state-of-the-art facility, being constructed by Churchill Downs Inc. in partnership with Keeneland Association, the world's largest thoroughbred auction company, will feature live horse racing and horse racing machines as part of a massive new development off Fort Campbell Boulevard.

The venue will include a harness race course, horse stables, horse racing gaming machines, a 128-room hotel, a grandstand, an outdoor amphitheater and an equestrian center.

Historic moment for Oak Grove

Oak Grove officials call the moment historic.

Oak Grove Mayor Theresa Jarvis believes this is a turning point for the town, telling the crowd assembled at Tuesday morning's groundbreaking that the "new racing and entertainment venue will put our city on the map."

She pointed out the tourism and economic growth that the facility would bring to the area, along with the cultural opportunity involved in bringing Kentucky's $4 billion horse racing industry to Oak Grove.

"This investment gives our community the chance to be part of the culture of horse racing in Kentucky," she said. Read more: Leaf Chronicle

Kelli Pendleton, the president/CEO of the Christian County Chamber of Commerce, was equally enthusiastic.

"This venue is nothing short of historic. The facility will be cutting edge. We have two iconic brands representing a major industry in Kentucky coming to your backyard," Pendleton said.

Christian County Judge Executive Steve Tribble was also effusive in his praise of the benefits the project would bring to Oak Grove.

Help wanted in Wisconsin: Stagnant labor force slowing economy
While Wisconsin’s economy remains strong and manufacturing is the No. 1 industry, it does face some threats, foremost, finding employees to fill jobs.
Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce President and CEO described the state of manufacturing in Wisconsin to Waunakee Area Chamber of Commerce members at the Chamber’s April 3 Wake Up Waunakee forum, explaining the labor crisis and what can be done.
Some threats to Wisconsin manufacturing are global and political, including tariffs which have increased steel costs and the price of doing business. Trade disputes are another, Bauer said, noting that a replacement is needed for NAFTA since Canada and Mexico are where most goods are traded.
But the challenge of finding workers is shared by every industry.
“I can’t think of a sector of the economy that is not having trouble finding people. About 70 percent of our members at WMC are having trouble finding workers right now,” Bauer said. “And if you look at the demographics of the state, it’s not going to get any better any time soon.”
Data from the Applied Population Lab shows that between 2010 and 2040, the state will see a 0.1 percent increase in the labor force.
“I used to say that’s economic stagnation; in fact, that’s economic contraction. That is a significant problem,” Bauer said.
Declining birthrates and migration patterns have added to the need for workers. Retiring adults are moving to places with lower or no income tax, along with warmer climates, such as Florida and Arizona, Bauer noted.

Overall, the state’s population has grown but moving in are older adults rather than people of prime earning age, impacting the local tax and state tax base. Read more: HNG News

Prince William Chamber Stands Against Doubling of “Tech Tax” Rate

“TECH TAX” DEFEATED
PW Chamber and Business Community Defeat Massive Tax Increase

Manassas, VA – Tonight at a special Board of County Supervisors Meeting, Supervisors Nohe, Lawson, Angry and Anderson voted against a measure that would have led to a massive tax increase on over 4,000 businesses in Prince William County.

The measure would have increased operating costs, potentially limited a business’ ability to invest in new technology and would have devastated economic development in the region.

“This is not just a victory for the Prince William Chamber, the Technology Industry and the over 4,000 businesses that would have been impacted by this massive tax hike. This is a win for the entire region and says that despite political pressure we have leaders who understand and want a stable and predictable business environment," said Ross Snare, Director of Communications and Government Affairs for the Prince William Chamber of Commerce.

Snare went on to say, "We need to work together to make the Prince William Region the best place for businesses to want to come and grow. Supervisors Nohe, Lawson, Angry and Anderson showed us tonight that we have the leadership to accomplish that. We at the Chamber look forward to collaborating with ALL the Supervisors to make the Prince William Region the best place to live, work, play and do business!"
