#Chamberheart: $114,000 Raised At Plainfield Giving Gala

The Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the Friends for Charitable Giving, a group of community minded volunteers, are pleased to announce that over $114,000 in net proceeds was raised at the 2019 Plainfield Giving Gala. Approximately three hundred guests attended the black tie affair which was held on Feb. 16 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. In addition to a formal dinner the event included an open bar, silent and live auctions, cash raffle and dancing to a ten piece orchestra.

The mission of the Plainfield Giving Gala is to raise funds for charitable causes throughout the Plainfield area.

"For our inaugural event, we are very pleased with the results and are truly grateful to our generous sponsors and everyone that attended and supported the Gala," said Ron Kazmar, who along with his wife Kathy was a co-chair of the 2019 Giving Gala. "A wonderful time was had by all raising money for those in need and we are looking forward to next year's Giving Gala which will be held on February 22, 2020 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club."

Net proceeds from the 2019 Plainfield Giving Gala will be used to provide grants to local nonprofits that provide services primarily within the boundaries of Plainfield School District 202. Further information regarding the grants and how to apply for them will be available within the next few weeks on the website of the Plainfield Giving Gala at https://plainfieldgivinggala.org.

Bowling Green makes 'Best small cities for business' list

When Troy Perkins was looking for a place to set up his Pelican’s SnoBalls franchise, he couldn’t think of a better place than his hometown of Bowling Green.
“Bowling Green has always been a hub for people to come to for shopping and stuff,” said Perkins, who opened his Pelican’s SnoBalls business three years ago. “Setting up a business was pretty easy. There are a lot of good people overall to help.”
Now you could say Perkins’ perception of the city has been confirmed.
Bowling Green is the top Kentucky city and ranks 13th nationally in the chamber ofcommerce.org 2019 ranking of the best small cities for business.
The ranking of cities with populations between 50,000 and 250,000 took into account cost of living, job creation rates, per capita income, education levels, unemployment rates and other factors.
Using those criteria, Bowling Green was in the top 10 percent of the 162 cities included in the survey.
It ranked just behind Rapid City, S.D., and just ahead of Jonesboro, Ark.
The only other Kentucky cities on the list were Owensboro (44th) and Elizabethtown (110th).
Longtime Bowling Green residents like Warren County Judge-Executive Mike Buchanon weren’t surprised that the city ranked high on the list, which was topped by Fargo, N.D.
“We work hard to create a business-friendly environment,” Buchanon said. “We try to eliminate needless red tape and streamline government access. We keep tax rates low and assist businesses in every way possible.”
That business climate was a factor for Shawn Rubel, a native Canadian who started a creative content company called Eezy in Bowling Green three years ago.
“The skilled workforce and strong economic growth helps businesses in Bowling Green find the employees and opportunities they need to grow,” Rubel said. “Being in the tech industry, most would expect a company like mine to start up in a larger city like Nashville, but Bowling Green has provided the right opportunities for Eezy to grow and thrive. “
That contrast with large cities is one reason chamberofcommerce.org conducts the study. According to the news release about the ranking: “For neophyte entrepreneurs, the high level of competition and lofty prices in large cities can be a lot to handle the first time out. ... Most of the time, modestly sized cities offer a more welcoming environment for young upstarts to enter the business arena than their larger counterparts.”
Another local entrepreneur, Matt Pfefferkorn of Mellow Matt’s Music and More, said he’s right at home in Bowling Green, which has a current population of about 67,000.
“Nashville is hot right now, but I wouldn’t want to open a business there,” Pfefferkorn said. “Bowling Green is growing, but its size is still manageable.”
The recognition by chamberofcommerce.org follows two other recent accolades for Bowling Green: its ranking by Money magazine as the best place to live in Kentucky and the naming of the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce by Site Selection magazine as the top-performing economic development organization serving an area with a population of 200,000 or less.
“Obviously, we’re very humbled by the rankings,” said Ron Bunch, the chamber’s president and CEO. “It’s a reflection of our strong economic base and the education level of our citizens. Seeing that we’re in the top 10 percent (of the chamberofcommerce.org ranking) is awesome.” Read more: Bowling Green Daily News

New Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Commission Up And Running

Robbie Marsh, Executive Director of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce and the Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Commission addressed the Accomack County Board of Supervisors Wednesday night. Marsh told the Board that he and the new Board of Directors have hit the ground running and have established goals for the Commission to accomplish as soon as possible.

Marsh listed the following action items.
  1. Restructure of staff roles and responsibilities to maximize efficiencies.
  2. Fill empty positions due to retirement and attrition.
  3. Correct and launch the new web site which was initiated in 2017.
  4. Create, print and distribute the 2019 Travel Guide minimizing expense for the over budget line item.
  5. Overcome a $65,946 budget deficit as of December 31, 2018. Marsh said that the elimination of the Onancock office and transferring operations to the Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce building in Melfa along with the restructuring of the staff would go a long way toward overcoming the deficit.
  6. Design and present to the Board of Commissioners a new strategic Bi-County Tourism Marketing Plan to grow tourism for the entire area.
  7. To organize Tourism Industry Specific Focus Group Workshops to develop regionally collaborative marketing strategies, gather and report industry specific data for analysis and identify obstacles preventing growth.
  8. Coordinate and assist with FY18 and FY19 with a full audit to assure financial compliance.
  9. Lay the groundwork to re-establish the Middle Shore Welcome Center at the Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce in Melfa.
Marsh said that some of the issues were due to the problems the Tourism Commission incurred in 2018 due to the resignation of some staff members.

#BestChamber Practices: Charlottesville Regional Chamber launches new leadership program

The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce has launched a new leadership circle for members.
It's called Partners in Trust, and area organizations are invited to invest in the advancement of the business community as a whole while allowing participants to position themselves at the front in leadership and innovation.
“Partners in Trust have the ability and desire to invest in the chamber beyond the standard membership dues, to help us build the strongest, most collaborative and successful business community in the region,” said Elizabeth Cromwell, president and CEO of the chamber.
She says many of the chamber's accomplishments for others cannot happen without additional support from such civic-minded organizations.
Participants will earn frequent recognition in communications and events put on by the chamber and access to partners-only events with business leaders.
The program includes companies from many business sectors, including public, private, and nonprofit partners.
There is a special entry-level rate available for businesses with fewer than ten employees to help smaller businesses participate. Read more: CBS19NEWS

Governor Eric Holcomb brings his plans for the state to the valley. From public safety, to moving Indiana forward, the Governor made a stop in Loogootee to meet first hand with fellow Hoosiers.
Smiles, handshakes, and big ideas awaited Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb at the Martin County Annual Chamber of Commerce dinner Monday night.
"We covered a lot of topics and it was just a free following conversation, whatever came to their mind, that's what keeps it alive and upbeat and I enjoy that format as well," Governor Eric Holcomb said.
The hot topics of the night were education, school bus safety, and Indiana's economy.
"Our economy is humming and roaring and growing that means more opportunity for more people," Holcomb said.
