Batavia Chamber of Commerce to Honor Businesses Who Exemplify Confidence and Investment in Batavia as Ole Award Winners

Batavia Chamber member Michelle ‘Mike’ Burke named Ambassador of the Year; all will be honored at the Inspire 2021 event in May.

Batavia, Ill. – January 21, 2021 – Today, seven Batavia businesses were named recipients of the 2020 Ole Award. Businesses who had final city permits by September 1, 2020 were eligible. One other business will receive a Green Ole Award, the second year for this award.

Additionally, Michelle (Mike) Burke was named Ambassador of the Year for the Batavia Chamber of Commerce. All recipients will be honored at the Inspire 2021: A Celebration of Those Who Inspire Us! event, tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 20.

A committee of Batavia Chamber members, along with representation from the City of Batavia and Batavia Chamber staff, evaluate all Batavia businesses who meet the final permit timing qualifications. If no one on the committee is familiar with the improvements and/or new construction, a visit to the candidate is made, along with qualifying conversations. After deliberation, the committee selects those businesses whose investment and confidence in Batavia stands out as the year’s Ole Award winners.

The Ole honorees for 2020 and the appropriate category for their award are:
New Construction – Industrial: Cratos, LLC., builder, 1850 E. Fabyan Parkway
Remodeling – Industrial: Cast Aluminum Solutions Research and Development Technical Center, 1250 Douglas Road
Remodeling – Industrial: Midwest Industrial Funds/Second City Prints, 1020 Olympic Drive
Remodeling – Industrial: SD Wheel, 1300 S. River Street
New Construction – Commercial: The Boardwalk Shops (City of Batavia and Batavia MainStreet), 114 E. Wilson Street
Remodeling – Commercial: Oak & Swine, 107 E. Wilson Street
Remodeling – Commercial: Six + Cypress, 103 E. Wilson Street

The Batavia Environmental Commission selects the recipient of The Green Ole Award. Businesses that improved water quality and water conservation, were energy conscious, promoted healthy ecology, were more sustainable in their waste management, improved air quality and/or educated employees were encouraged to apply and showcase the work they are doing to make Batavia more eco-friendly. This year's recipient is GreenSeed Contract Packaging at 1025 Paramount Parkway.

The company creates flexible packaging that requires less water to manufacture. According to Emma Cole, Batavia Environmental Commission member, "Finding ways to reduce waste and responsibly meet packaging needs is a huge piece of the sustainability puzzle. GreenSeed is committed to thinking differently and helping solve the problem of single-use packaging through advancing compostable packaging technology, policy changes, and working with their clients on each project so packaging is individualized and less wasteful."

Ambassador of the Year

Batavia citizen Michelle ‘Mike’ Burke was named as the Ambassador of the Year for 2020. In a year when many of the Chamber’s events were cancelled or moved online, Mike set herself apart by attending as many events as she could to welcome new members and help them to connect with other members.

Besides being engaged with the Chamber, Mike is an active member and the president of the Batavia Women’s Club. She also serves on the Batavia Parks Foundation board and is a past major supporter of Batavia Youth Baseball and many other organizations supporting the vitality and strength of Batavia.

The public, per CDC guidelines, will be invited to attend Inspire 2021 and honor the current generation of hard-working Batavia business owners. Tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 20, details have not been finalized.

The awards presentation of the Citizen of the Year, Robert ‘Bob’ Hansen; Spirit of Batavia, Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry and Clothes Closet; Batavia Community Impact Award honorees, Taking Care of Our Caretakers and Batavia Peace Rally on June 3, 2020; Ole Award winners, and the Ambassador of the Year will take place at the event.

For more information about any of these awards or the event, please call Margaret Perreault, president and CEO of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce, or Patti Anselme, special events coordinator, at (630) 879-7134. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the annual signature celebration for the chamber.

Valparaiso Chamber: Message from President Rex Richards

Dear Valpo Chamber Members:

The economy in Valparaiso continues to be strong and vibrant. While gatherings of size have been discouraged by the Governor’s decree, most businesses continue to move forward.

The real estate market is hot, however, there is not enough product to satisfy the number of people looking to move to Valpo. The influx of people from Illinois is driving the demand for housing sales in Valparaiso, Porter County, and Northwest Indiana.

Industrially, the tide has turned in our favor and we have larger firms making real estate purchases in Valparaiso. Early this Spring, I believe announcements will be made that significant recognized firms are locating their operations to this community. What is the reason for the interest in sizeable firms wanting to move to Valparaiso? It is our proximity to Chicago, as well as our overall quality of life, which includes good schools and reasonable taxes. The pandemic has brought many firms to Valparaiso because we are a well-run state with a AAA bond rating. Indiana works, where as our neighboring states are facing challenges with their taxes and cost of government.

The Valpo Chamber is no different than many of its members. We are having to alter the way we do business. During the next two to three months, our breakfast and luncheon meetings will be presented in an online format. Our AM Valpo monthly event has been operating in Zoom format since June, 2020.

This Thursday, a video link to our Annual Meeting featuring Mayor Murphy’s State of the City Address will be emailed to all members and posted on our Facebook page. We have recorded our entire Annual Meeting which you will be able to view in complete length at 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 28. Our Salute to Leadership event has been delayed until April in anticipation of being able to host a gathering with guests in attendance. If not, then that event may also be in video format.

I am honored to mention that our 2021 Chamber Chair is Thomas Long, president of NITCO, a locally owned telecom-ISP-CATV firm. Our 2020 Chair, Matt Vessely, regional president of 1st Source Bank, did an outstanding job leading our Chamber Board through this past challenging year. I cannot say enough about Matt’s steady stewardship of the Chamber during this turbulent pandemic.

To all our members I say onward and upward for 2021!

Rex G. Richards, CCE
President

Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce Receives Virginia Tourism Corporation Recovery Marketing Leverage Grant for Tourism Marketing

The Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce has received $2500 from the Virginia Tourism Corporation’s (VTC) Recovery Marketing Leverage Program (RMLP), designed to help local and regional tourism entities attract more visitors by leveraging limited local marketing dollars through a local match of the state grants funds.

More than $1.9 million in matching grant funds were awarded to 161 local tourism initiatives through this program. This funding cycle, local partners will provide more than $5.6 million in-kind value to match the VTC grants. The grants will ultimately impact 483 statewide tourism entities.

Your Farmville Area Chamber will use the VTC Recovery Marketing Leverage grant funds to promote chamber members’ businesses as well as businesses within the Farmville downtown district with paid ads on social media.

“We are so grateful and excited to receive this grant from VTC. Funds will go directly towards not only promoting our members, but also some Farmville Downtown Partnership businesses that are not chamber members,” shared Anne Tyler Paulek, Executive Director of the Farmville Area Chamber and Managing Partner for Farmville Downtown Partnership.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the tourism and hospitality industries in Virginia.  As the Commonwealth slowly reopens for business, VTC offered these grant funds as a first step to re-entry into the marketplace to spur economic activity and future travel across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“Tourism is a crucial section of the Virginia economy and when we invest in this industry, we support local job creation and drive regional economic growth, which is desperately needed now due to the pandemic,” said Governor Ralph Northam. “These funds give localities and businesses access to critical marketing resources that will help bring more travelers to our Commonwealth, increase visitor spending, and grow demand for Virginia products.” Read more: Southside Messenger

Southeast Kentucky Chamber awards education grants

The Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce recently awarded $5,000 in education grants through its Excellence in Education Grant Program to four schools across the region – three Pike County schools and one school in Magoffin County.

Jordan Gibson, president and CEO of the Southeast Kentucky Chamber, said the Chamber’s Excellence in Education Grant Program is an important investment because it gives educators access to additional funding and resources that can be used for the betterment of the students they serve, noting that this grant cycle is particularly important due to the increased need for technology as teachers and students are finding ways to connect remotely during the covid-19 pandemic.

“We are grateful to give back to the educators who are going above and beyond to educate our children, especially this year when educators are in need of more technology to bridge the gap with their students,” said Gibson.

Dorton Elementary School (Pike County), Herald Whitaker Middle School (Magoffin County), Mullins Elementary School (Pike County), and Shelby Valley High School (Pike County) were among those to receive education grants from the Chamber.

Dorton Elementary Library Media Specialist Rebecca Bowling received $1,250 to provide students with eBooks to promote reading remotely. Bowling said that due to covid-19, students have been learning remotely and have been unable to check out books from the school’s library, noting that students have already read most of the digital books offered through the school.

Herald Whitaker Middle School Assistant Principal Jessica Prater received $1,250 for a 3D printer and supplies, which she hopes will give students the chance to “bring their creations to life” while promoting science, visual arts, and creativity.

Mullins Elementary Curriculum Coach and Title One and Building Assessment Coordinator Rachel Branham received $1,250 to purchase computers for students to use at home for remote learning, noting that the school has loaned out all available laptops with some students still in need.

Shelby Valley High Educator Zelda Hall received $1,250 for experiential advanced placement (AP) calculus tools and materials. Hall said students will be able to perform lab investigations to gain a better understanding of calculus concepts and will prepare them for future study in the field.

“The purchase of this equipment will not only impact the educational experience of this year’s students but will also impact the education of our students for many years to come,” said Hall.

The Chamber’s Excellence in Education Grant Program funds approximately $5,000 in educational projects annually in schools in the eight counties the Chamber serves: Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, and Pike. Since its inception, more than $65,000 has been awarded through the education grant program. Each school can only receive one grant per grant cycle and must wait two grant cycles to receive another grant.

“Each year, the Chamber looks forward to presenting these education grants to the dedicated educators of this region,” said Gibson. “We are honored to be able to give back to those educators and the students who are the future of this region.”

60,000 Paycheck Protection Program Loans Approved in First Week

SBA’s dedicated access to community financial institutions helped underserved small businesses

WASHINGTON –Today, the U.S. Small Business Administration announced that it has approved approximately 60,000 PPP loan applications submitted by nearly 3,000 lenders, for over $5 billion, between the program’s re-opening on Monday, Jan. 11, at 9 a.m. ET through to Sunday, Jan. 17. Last week, the PPP provided dedicated access to community financial institutions that specialize in serving underserved communities, including minority- women-, and veteran-owned small businesses from Monday through Thursday, joined Friday by smaller lenders.

As of today, Jan. 19, the Paycheck Protection Program is open to all participating lenders.

“The SBA continues to help small businesses across the nation access vital funds through the Paycheck Protection Program. Data from our first week, which first allowed hundreds of community financial institutions to submit applications, then opened wider to small banks, demonstrate that we have helped tens of thousands of businesses,” said SBA Administrator Jovita Carranza.

“The PPP is off to another great start helping our nation’s economy. With PPP re-opening today for all First and Second Draw loan applications, the SBA remains committed to keeping small business workers on payroll and their doors open during this challenging time. Moreover, the SBA over-performed operationally, issuing guidance and rules in advance and in alignment with the new law’s requirements,” Carranza added.

First Draw PPP loans are for those borrowers who have not received a PPP loan before August 8, 2020. The first two PPP rounds open between March and August 2020 were a historic success helping 5.2 million small businesses keep 51 million American workers employed.

Second Draw PPP loans are for eligible small businesses with 300 employees or less and that previously received a First Draw PPP loan. These borrowers will have to use or had used the full amount of their First Draw loan only for authorized uses and demonstrate at least a 25% reduction in gross receipts between comparable quarters in 2019 and 2020. The maximum amount of a Second Draw PPP loan is $2 million.

The Paycheck Protection Program remains open for First and Second Draw PPP loans until March 31, 2021, as set forth in the Economic Aid Act, or until Congressionally-appropriated funding is exhausted.

Todd Kuckkahn: Do you think it is too late?

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday celebration, I am sharing an article I wrote for FDI Alliance: https://online.anyflip.com/bnxu/qqsu/mobile/index.html#p=58

While we only honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once a year, he is symbolic of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our communities throughout the year.

I have been posting a lot recently on LinkedIn and Facebook about FEAR. Hopefully, you have been liking, commenting, and sharing. Why did I take a risk and share this article? Core Values. Inner Circle. Comfort Zone. Addressing these is the only way to fly over fear to learn and grow. How do you overcome your fears and feel comfortable in risk?

I will be facilitating small groups to explore John C. Maxwell’s just-released book, Change Your World. My personal, simple solution to what our world is facing is intentional (NOT random) acts of kindness. Every human being is capable of, at least, that.

I know getting some like-minded people on a virtual meeting to share our fears and kindness can change our world closer to what Dr. King imagined.

Join Me. Message me if you are interested in learning more. Let’s bust through fear, take a risk, and continue to change our world.

Lake Barkley Chamber of Commerce facilitates community interaction, communication, growth

The Lake Barkley Chamber of Commerce includes members who see opportunity and possibilities, even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and its accompanying challenges. Not only has the organization’s membership grown significantly in the past couple of years, but several businesses have opened, even in the midst of COVID-19, according to executive director Deb Domke.

“During the pandemic, we were very lucky to have a community, where the local people rallied together to support our existing local businesses,” she said. “I believe the new businesses coming in saw the support base they had on the local level and wanted to open their businesses here. We’ve had a variety of businesses that have opened during the pandemic.”

The entrepreneurial spirit, community focus, and customized, personal service are key factors Domke sees as thriving in the area the chamber serves. “We’re really lucky, here in Lyon County,” she said. “We not only have a great small town environment, but we also have seasonal visitors. This is a vacationland, drawing tourists from Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, and all around for weekend trips.”
Having lived in Lyon County most of her life, Domke sees a real difference in the winter traffic here. “I remember in growing up, that in winter, the entire Lyon County shut down because the lake houses did and those people went back to their cities,” she said. “In the last couple of years, I’ve seen more and more traffic throughout the entire year. So, where the lake houses used to be closed, now the people are here all during the holiday season. There are more and more people and traffic on our roads. I think we have a growth not only with business, but with our population.”

Even the pandemic has had some positive effects, according to the chamber’s executive director. Cabin fever meant many people still wanted to get out. So, Lyon County and the Lake Barkley region have been a good refuge for people to get away, to come here and explore the lakes and the outdoors. “Throughout the pandemic, you can see all the boat sales and (eventually) there wasn’t a boat anywhere to be bought,” she pointed out. “The same is the case with campers, (recreational vehicles), and all that. So, all that stimulates the economy and the business community.” Read more: Herald- Ledger

Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a great day!

Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce - President's Corner

By Kara Beer, IOM, MPA

We’ve never faced a pandemic of this scale in our lifetimes. Add to that global economic impacts that will likely linger for months or even years.

What has become clear is that the role and value of chambers of commerce has never been more crucial. Not just to get our communities through the pandemic, but to help drive economic recovery far into the future.

While referencing the 2020 adopted strategic plan of the Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce,
I’m reminded of how while the strategies and tasks may be adjusted now, we here at the Chamber are
having impact with the community on a multitude of ways daily.

IMPACT STATEMENT OF THE BATTLE CREEK AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce connects and empowers business and community professionals to have the courage and confidence to be catalytic leaders in addressing their business
and communities’ greatest issues.

Our 4 Key Priority Areas

Be a Center of Excellence for Business. Be the number one resource for best practice and innovative resources and information for the business community in the greater Battle Creek region and Calhoun County.

Storytelling. Help business professionals craft their narratives, and serve as a community platform and megaphone for business success stories.

Community Advocacy. Provide the information, connections and services that will help businesses and organizations proactively address the greatest challenges within their businesses/organizations, so they can best promote, serve, and grow within our region.

Organizational Excellence. Ensure the Battle Creek Area Chamber of Commerce is the best organization it can be for staff and members.

So many of you have been innovating through these challenging times. Our team is inspired. And, we know continuing to share best practices and innovations - and connecting as a community to build our future - will make us all stronger. Our Chamber team will continue to need grit, passion, innovation, and a collaborative mindset to move the economy and community forward.

I will go more into detail of each of our key priority areas and how we’re having or looking to have impact in our community over the next year throughout this publication.

Indiana Chamber President and CEO Kevin Brinegar offers commentary on the start of the 2021 Indiana General Assembly Jan. 4th

“The unique circumstances and unknowns will undoubtedly figure into what and how things get accomplished. We are hopeful for a productive legislative session because there are plenty of issues for lawmakers to address that are closely or tangentially tied to the pandemic and how it’s altered business and the workforce.

“At the top of our priority list is protecting businesses and institutions from legal liability if someone contracts COVID-19 after returning to work or school, or after visiting a health facility. These protections would be for those employers and places that have made a good faith effort to follow recognized safety guidelines.

“Two long-term goals have improved odds in 2021. Those are raising the cigarette tax and the state implementing a work share program.

“Indiana’s smoking rate is the fourth highest in the country. A big reason is that our cigarette tax is the lowest in the Midwest and among the lowest nationally. We are advocating for a $2 per pack increase because it’s proven to be the one action to successfully reduce smoking and health care costs. It could also possibly bolster depleted state revenue.

“Work share is a safety net during economic downturns, like the current pandemic. Employers can reduce hours without full layoffs, and then over time, employees can be returned to full-time status once circumstances improve. It’s unfortunate Indiana did not have such a program in place in 2020. A new study by the Brookings Institution estimates that Indiana lost as much as $100 million in federal unemployment insurance funding in 2020 because it was not a work share state. Indiana simply can’t afford to be unprepared again.

“Additionally, incentives around remote workers and further preparing all areas of the state for new technology are no longer an option but required. Broadband connectivity is becoming as important an infrastructure need as water and electricity.

“We expect legislation to be introduced on all of these issues and will be advocating for them to be heard in committees and advanced to the House and Senate floors.”

As the legislative session unfolds, the Indiana Chamber will update its online policy center at www.indianachamber.com/policy.

Statement from Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Tim Daman

"As we monitor the potential for protests in capital cities across the country, the Lansing Regional Chamber stands with Lansing Mayor Andy Schor on his request to Governor Whitmer to activate the Michigan National Guard. We believe it's essential to protect our historic Michigan Capitol building and the businesses, offices, and neighborhoods surrounding it. Lansing welcomes visitors each year to exercise their First Amendment rights. However, we will never condone nor view violence as acceptable."

Monroe County Chamber: SBA Re-Opening Paycheck Protection Program to Small Lenders on Friday, January 15 and All Lenders on Tuesday, January 19

The U.S. Small Business Administration, in consultation with the U.S. Treasury Department, will re-open the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan portal to PPP-eligible lenders with $1 billion or less in assets for First and Second Draw applications on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 9 a.m. EST. The portal will fully open on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 to all participating PPP lenders to submit First and Second Draw loan applications to SBA.

Earlier in the week, SBA granted dedicated PPP access to Community Financial Institutions (CFIs) which include Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs), Minority Depository Institutions (MDIs), Certified Development Companies (CDCs), and Microloan Intermediaries as part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to reach underserved and minority small businesses.

On Friday, SBA will continue its emphasis on reaching smaller lenders and businesses by opening to approximately 5,000 more lenders, including community banks, credit unions, and farm credit institutions. Moreover, the agency also plans to have dedicated service hours for these smaller lenders after the portal fully re-opens next week.

First Draw PPP Loans are for those borrowers who have not received a PPP loan before August 8, 2020. The first round of the PPP, which ran from March to August 2020, was a historic success helping 5.2 million small businesses keep 51 million American workers employed.

Second Draw PPP Loans are for eligible small businesses with 300 employees or less, that previously received a First Draw PPP Loan and will use or have used the full amount only for authorized uses, and that can demonstrate at least a 25% reduction in gross receipts between comparable quarters in 2019 and 2020. The maximum amount of a Second Draw PPP loan is $2 million.

Updated PPP Lender forms, guidance, and resources are available at www.sba.gov/ppp and www.treasury.gov/cares.

Biewer Lumber Opening New Sawmill in Winona, Creating 150 Jobs

Biewer Lumber is constructing a new, state-of-the-art sawmill in Winona, Mississippi. The project is a $130 million investment and will create 150 jobs.

“The growth of companies like Biewer Lumber in Mississippi sends a strong message that our state has a supportive business environment and a skilled workforce,” Gov. Tate Reeves said. “Biewer Lumber’s construction and expansion of the sawmill in Newton and now the construction of a new sawmill in Winona and the creation of these jobs is a testament to that fact.”

Biewer Lumber is a family owned company headquartered in St. Clair, Michigan. The company operates five sawmills: two in Michigan, two in Wisconsin and one in Newton, Mississippi.

“My family’s passion for the lumber industry has prompted this expansion in the South,” said Tim Biewer, president and CEO of the company. “There is no better place to grow the business than the fiber-rich state of Mississippi.”

The facility in Newton was built in 2016, and the company expanded in 2019, increasing its mill production by 100 million board feet per year and creating 45 jobs. The sawmill now has 175 employees, operates two saw lines and produces 350 million board feet per year.

The sawmill in Winona will have the ability to produce 350 million board feet of lumber per year.

MDA is providing an Industry Incentive grant to assist with road infrastructure and rail and site prep. MDA also is providing a CAP loan to Montgomery County to assist with public infrastructure. The company also qualifies for the Advantage Jobs Rebate program, which provides a cash rebate to eligible businesses that create new jobs exceeding the average annual wage of the state or the county in which the company locates.

Montgomery County is providing a fee-in-lieu of property taxes.

“Montgomery County is proud to welcome Biewer Lumber to our community, and we look forward to watching the company grow and thrive in the years to come,” said Ron Wood, president of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors. “A development of this magnitude will not only generate a great deal of new revenue and 150 new jobs for Montgomery County, but it will highlight the county as a premier location for future developments, especially with its central location, three major transportation corridors, and leadership committed to making Montgomery County an ideal locale to do business.”

Sue Stidham, director of the Montgomery County Economic Development Council, said the new sawmill will benefit the entire area.

“We are proud and grateful to welcome a new company and citizen to our community, Biewer Lumber,” she said. “The jobs they bring will fill a need in Montgomery County as well as the surrounding counties. We thank the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, the mayor and city of Winona and the Economic Development District and Council for making this a joint effort with the state of Mississippi.”

“Just a few short years after opening its first sawmill in Mississippi, Biewer Lumber already is constructing another facility, one that will provide good jobs to the citizens of Montgomery County,” MDA Interim Director John Rounsaville said. “This new sawmill illustrates Biewer Lumber’s commitment to creating jobs in Mississippi and building stronger communities here. We appreciate the efforts of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, the Economic Development Partnership of Montgomery County, Entergy and Atmos Gas in making this possible.”
