Good morning Chamber world! Today is going to be a GREAT day!
Crossroads Regional Chamber of
Commerce Announces November 4, 2016 Reality Store SM
Friday, November 4, 2016 ~ 7:00 a.m. till 2:45 p.m. Colonel
Wheeler Middle School, 401 Joliet Street in Crown Point will be the site of the
Crown Point Reality StoreSM. Each year, the Crossroads Regional
Chamber of Commerce hosts a Reality StoreSM for the Crown Point
and Merrillville Community School Corporations as a way
to connect the business community to students. The Reality StoreSM is
a day of simulation where 8th graders become 28 years old and have to live on a
paycheck. 8th graders learn about the real world, costs, and various
lifestyles. This encourages students to learn budgeting and begin planning
their careers early in life. One of the best parts of the Reality Store is that
over 600 students are impacted by nearly 90 professionals who volunteer for
this event.
We want to thank the businesses that are sponsoring a table at
this event; 219 Healthy Vending, Centier Bank, Chick-fil-A, First Merchants Bank, Generate
Sales, Indiana Wesleyan University, Junior Achievement of Chicago, Member
Source Credit Union, Momentum Church, Peoples Bank, and Tech Credit Union.
We
need 45 more volunteers for this event.
Would your business like to send 2 all-day volunteers to help for free
marketing opportunities? Remember you don’t have to be a chamber member to
volunteer for this event. Email Lee
at lee@crossroadschamber.org or call 219.769.8180 for a copy of the
volunteer form!

Valpo chamber asks for Porter Co. to
be included in convention center study
Any consideration of a new
convention center in Northwest Indiana should include Porter County as a
potential location, according to local chamber officials.
But, Porter County elected
officials would need to agree before that happens.
In a letter dated Sept.
28, Rex Richards, president of the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce,
asked Bill Hanna, president and CEO of the Northwest Indiana Regional
Development Authority, to include Porter County should that agency study the
feasibility of a new convention center.
Talk of a new facility was
prompted by news that the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza and Star Plaza Theatre
in Merrillville would be demolished next year.
Hanna said his agency is
drafting a document to solicit companies to conduct a feasibility study to
replace the meeting space lost next year with the demolition of the
Merrillville hotel. Read more: NWI Times

Mike Huber: 'Accelerate Indy' Makes
Talent a Focus
The chief
executive officer of the Indy Chamber says the new economic development
strategy for the Indianapolis region places a strong focus on talent and
homegrown expansion. Michael Huber says Accelerate Indy aims to help the
nine-county region compete with other metropolitan areas throughout the
country. He says, in order to boost the regional economy, talent must become a
top priority in addition to traditional economic development strategies.
Huber says
one of the main ways to attract and retain talent is to put a greater focus on
entrepreneurship and small business growth.
"Traditionally,
a lot of cities and regions have built their economic development strategies on
getting companies to relocate from other communities, said Huber. "But, as
a percentage, many more jobs are going to be created by our homegrown companies
and companies that are already here so we're trying to figure out what tools
could we bring that would help them expand and in many cases, it's reducing
barriers to expansion."
The chamber
says Accelerate Indy also has a major focus on global trade. Huber says there
are hundreds of companies in central Indiana that have international buyers for
their products but they've never taken a serious look at exporting or the
process seems too daunting. "We've realized that we can provide a really
valuable service by connecting them to markets in other countries that have
growing demand for their services or products."
One of the
projects already underway as part of Accelerate Indy is the Metro Indianapolis
Global Trade and Investment Strategy, which encourages mid-sized companies in
the region to become exporters and attract foreign investment. Read more: Inside Indiana Business
Terre Haute Chamber event: Senator Coats: Nation must address
its debt
Tax, regulatory and fiscal reform needed
Six years ago the nation’s
debt was front and center in elections.
Now?
“I don’t hear our
candidates talking about that right now, but that is what they are going to
face,” U.S. Sen. Dan Coats told members of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce
at a luncheon Tuesday at Indiana State University.
The gross U.S. federal
government debt is now estimated at $19.4 trillion, according to the fiscal
year 2017 federal budget, said the Indiana Republican. That is an increase
from about $7.7 trillion in 2005.
Coats, who did not seek
re-election and will complete his term in three months, is chair of the U.S.
Congress Joint Economic Committee.
“We are only growing at
half the rate that we have traditionally grown after recessions. It is keeping
people out of work. We are not getting enough meaningful work for people,”
Coats said. “The world is kind of in transition in terms of digitization of
everything and automation of everything and so these are challenges for the
future.
“I have talked about tax
reform, regulatory reform and fiscal reform as the three pillars of things that
have to be dealt with... Whoever wins this election is going face these issues
and it will have an immense impact on the future of children, our grandchildren
and the future of this country,” Coats said.
Coats said he was making a
final tour of Indiana visiting cities he has represented since 2011.
Coats first served as U.S.
senator for Indiana from 1989 to 1999. He also served as a U.S. Representative,
in Indiana’s 4th congressional district, from 1981 to 1989.
Prior to addressing the
Chamber of Commerce, Coats said he has seen changes during his political
career, especially in election financing.
“When I first ran, you
raised money from people in your state, you had state supporters, it was a
modest amount of money and you had TV commercials,” he said.
“Today, it is outside
groups with unlimited money that they can pour in and say whatever they want to
say about a candidate. And the demand (is) on the members, who have to spend so
much time raising money, instead of legislating. One thing I will not miss at
all is asking people for money,” Coats said. Read more: Tribune Star

Local
legislators speak at Zionsville chamber luncheon
Five Indiana legislators
and an Indiana Congresswoman participated in a Zionsville Chamber of Commerce
luncheon and business expo Tuesday at the Golf Club of Indiana. The annual
event allows local business people to connect and network with one another and
listen to a panel of speakers about issues that affect them.
The panel included Indiana
State Representatives Donna Schaibley (R-Dist. 24) and Dr. Tim Brown (R-Dist.
41); and State Senators Phil Boots (R- Dist. 23), Brandt Hershman (R-Dist. 7)
and Mike Delph (R-Dist. 29). Congresswoman Susan Brooks (R-5th District) also
participated in the event.
“It was a wonderful and
successful event, with great panelists and attendees,” said Diane Schultz,
chamber director of member services and interim executive director.
About 120 people attended
the luncheon, where 20 expo booths representing a variety of businesses and
industries, were set up around the perimeter of the banquet room.
Schultz said this was the
first year state legislators served as panelists at the event; last year the
panel featured town officials.
The legislators noted
topics important to them in the session that just ended, as well as what they
believe will be the key issues in the 2017 session. Read more: Reporter.net
