Mississippi Economic Council Unfurls Bicentennial Banner


The Bicentennial banner for Mississippi is starting to fly over some businesses.
The red, white and blue flag is flying over the Tupelo headquarters of Bancorpsouth. It was designed to celebrate Mississippi’s Bicentennial in 2017.
That banner was unveiled last week by the Mississippi Economic Council, the state’s chamber of commerce.
MEC President Blake Wilson says the banner can be flown with the state, or U.S. flag.
“Doesn’t matter whether you fly it in lieu of the state flag or with the state flag, it goes either way. And so, let’s have some fun, let’s enjoy Mississippi and let’s rally around something everybody can relate to. Our state seal is beautiful and it’s right in the middle and it really is a great way of celebrating what we have got ahead of us.”
The design is the brainchild of Allan Hammons, who owns a marketing firm in Greenwood. The MEC will give the banners to businesses across the state. See the video: WCBI

Palatine chamber to host business expo


The Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce is holding its first Business Expo and Community Showcase from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at Falcon Park Recreation Center, 2195 N. Hicks Road.
This new event is open to the public, admission is free, and all attendees will receive one free entry into the basket raffle.

This family-friendly day will include more than 50 business vendors, live demonstrations, a kids area, live entertainment, giveaways, a 50/50 cash raffle, a basket raffle, and concessions available for purchase from Edelweiss Delicatessen and Catering, Chicago Culinary Kitchen, and Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce.
The presenting sponsor for this event is Palatine Park District, the entertainment sponsor is BMO Harris Bank, the platinum sponsor is Palatine Bank & Trust, and gold sponsors include BMO Harris Bank, Kids Kustom Parties and Palatine Public Library District.

Traverse City chamber seeks executive director


The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for a new executive director.
Laura Oblinger announced her resignation from the post in March. She walked out of her office for the last time in May.
The chamber's executive director is charged with developing and leading the organization's programs and strategies, a chamber release stated.
The chamber was founded in 1915 and today is a subsidiary corporation of TraverseConnect. It serves nearly 2,000 member businesses and is Michigan's third-largest chamber of commerce.
A full description of the executive director job is available at tcchamber.org, as is application information. Applicants must have strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, according to the release.
Applications must include a cover letter and a resume and are due by Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. Applications should be addressed to Search Committee, 202 E. Grandview Parkway, Traverse City, MI 49684, or may be sent to jobsearch@tcchamber.org.
The chamber's executive committee, which includes TraverseConnect CEO Doug Luciani, is heading up the selection process. Interviews will be conducted on Dec. 12 and 13. The board hopes to have the position filled by early 2017.
The executive director job description has been modified to allow for organizational changes completed last year when TraverseConnect was created, Luciani said in the release.
The executive director will report to the chamber's 22-member board and to Luciani. Read more: Record-Eagle.com


MMAC: More area economic indicators post gains in September



Most of the economic indicators for the Milwaukee area tracked by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce posted gains in September, highlighted by a 16-year low for the area’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate.
The 4.0 percent seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate for the metro area was the lowest since December 2000, which was at 3.3 percent, according to the MMAC report.
Overall, 17 of 22 economic indicators tracked by the MMAC posted gains in September, up from 16 that posted gains in both August and July. Data for one indicator, passenger traffic at Mitchell International Airport, was unavailable.
Nonfarm employment in the area was 862,400 in September, a modest 0.5 percent increase from a year ago. It was the 72nd month of year-over-year job growth in the metro area, but the growth pace was lower than the 0.8 percent increase for the first nine months of the year.
“While over three-quarters of local economic indicators are moving in the right direction, there are some points of concern,” said Bret Mayborne, economic research director for the MMAC. “The local area unemployment rate is the lowest recorded since 2000, but at the same time overall job gains remain lackluster, with most major industry sectors posting either year-over-year job gains of less than one percent or actual job declines.” Read more: BizTimes

Paducah Chamber Breakfast to Feature Dr. Reece

The Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce monthly Power in Partnership breakfast will feature the annual “Salute to Education” on Thursday, Nov. 3. The featured speaker is the new President of West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) Dr. Anton Reece.

In October of this year, Dr. Reece was appointed as the second President of WKCTC. A native of Barbados, Dr. Reece has served more than 26 years in higher education. He holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast news and a master’s degree in counseling from Eastern Kentucky University, 24 hours above his master’s from Murray State University and a doctorate in educational psychology from University of Tennessee – Knoxville.

Dr. Reece began his career at the former Paducah Community College (now WKCTC) in 1990 as a minority affairs coordinator and counselor. By the time he joined the administrative team in 2003 at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, he was WKCTC's Dean of Student Affairs and Enrollment.

Birmingham- Bloomfield Chamber fun: Halloween marches back to Shain Park 

The calendar says that Halloween is Monday, but the ghosts and goblins will be in Shain Park a day early for the annual Halloween Parade and Pumpkin Patch.
The fun kicks off at 1 p.m. as the Junior League of Birmingham hosts its annual Pumpkin Patch festivities downtown. Inflatables, pumpkin bowling, airbrushed tattoos and live performances are all on the schedule this Sunday.
“This year we’re bringing in an obstacle course for the older kids, and we’ve got some new snacks from Motown Snack Foods,” said Alyssa Tropea, chair of fall events for the Junior League of Birmingham. “I think the fact that everything is free definitely gets people’s attention, but really they come for the smiles. Seeing all the kids in their Halloween costumes is so much fun. And it’s like the last hurrah before the awful winter comes and we’re all stuck inside.”
Of course, it’s not a Halloween party without some tasty treats, and there will be plenty of them at the event, according to Tropea. She said parents love the fact that the snacks served up at the event are gluten and nut free, ensuring that even kids with food allergies will be able to enjoy them.
“We love that it gives kids an idea about what’s a healthy food alternative and shows them that something can be healthy and doesn’t have to taste bad,” she said.
Going with the good and good for you theme, the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with Whole Foods Market to bring organic cider and a build-your-own trail mix bar to the event.
The chamber and the Junior League aren’t the only ones getting in on the spooky action Sunday. At 3 p.m., the Baldwin Public Library will host a magic show for pre-registered guests, and right next door The Community House will have fun and games for children 10 and younger. Chamber president: Indy West side should support transit plan


The West Side Chamber of Commerce exists to promote vibrant, sustainable economic development and to strengthen the quality of life on Indianapolis’ west side. Because of that, we are proud to endorse the Marion County Transit Plan and encourage residents, employees, and employers on the west side to vote yes on Question 2 on Election Day.

Like many communities in our area, the west side faces critical issues. However, we also have tremendous opportunities for commercial and residential development. The West Side Chamber of Commerce has been working diligently with local partners, and we have ideas and plans for future growth of our area. The west side has recently been hit with high-profile job losses and although rapid transit does not “wave a magic wand” to resolve issues that led to these announcements, we are confident that the referendum on mass transit is a building block of economic development that will take the west side to the next level of growth. The potential for transit oriented development along the expanded routes is significant. Investment in transit on the west side is precisely the type of foundational element that is needed to prepare our area for growth into the next generation.

The West Side Chamber of Commerce will continue to work with Indy Connect, The Indy Chamber, IndyGo and other related parties to advocate for expansion of rapid transit to fully address transportation needs of residents and businesses of the west side of Indianapolis (Pike, Wayne and Decatur townships) as well as connectivity of Bus Rapid Transit to the Indianapolis International Airport via the West Washington Street corridor. Greene County (VA) Chamber hires new executive director

The Greene County Virginia Chamber of Commerce (the “Chamber”) announced today that a new Executive Director has been hired to oversee the day to day operations of the Chamber. Shari Bedker and her staff at Armstrong & Associates International, Inc. (“A&A”) were selected for the position.
“We have been very fortunate to have Melissa Liberatore as our Administrative Director for the past 5 years. Melissa has done an excellent job of running the Chamber, but earlier this year, asked to step down to devote time to other pursuits. The Board of the Chamber advertised for the job and we were pleased to find a firm in the Greene Community with the background and skillset to take the Chamber to the next level.” said Darla Rose, Chamber President.
Shari is the President and owner of A&A, which is an association management company, specializing in managing small non-profit business Associations that do not need a storefront. A&A is responsible for managing the memberships, conferences, accounting and electronic communications for seven associations worldwide. Shari is a CPA with a B.S. in accounting and an M.S. in Taxation from George Mason University. She and her husband, Larry, moved to Greene County in July 2014 from Fairfax, VA. Shari was easily able to transfer her business to Greene County as everything is done electronically and she and her staff travel around the U.S. and abroad for various conferences they are running. Tiffany is married to Chad Shifflett and has lived in Green County for 10 years. They have a grade school daughter and twin preschool boys. She worked at the UVA Credit Union for five years and in addition to being the Executive Assistant for the Chamber, she handles all the bookkeeping for A&A’s other clients.
