Grand Rapids Area Chamber event: The Courage to Drive Change

If you have driven the kind of substantive change that affects the culture of your community or company, you probably remember a time when someone said your idea was crazy, impractical, scary, or just didn’t make sense.

People who care go first. People who care are on the journey to be what Steve Jobs called “the crazy ones.”  If you’re already one of the crazy ones, or are on the journey to become one, join Penny Lewandowski from the Edward Lowe Foundation, an evangelist on driving an entrepreneurial culture, to hear more about what it takes to be the kind of leader who is willing to push forward regardless of the challenges or the chatter.

Recruited to the foundation in 2005, Penny Lewandowski is responsible for developing a strong national presence for the foundation, and for cultivating and managing relationships with the foundation’s external partners in entrepreneurship and economic development.  She also leads the efforts to set and drive the vision for the organization’s future.

Recognized as a thought leader in entrepreneurship and building an entrepreneurial culture, Lewandowski is a frequent speaker on new ways to think about economic development – especially how a grow-from-within strategy leads to thriving and sustainable economies. In this capacity, she also represents the philosophies of the National Center for Economic Gardening, led by Chris Gibbons and managed by the foundation.
Previously, Lewandowski led the foundation’s entrepreneurship team in developing and delivering programs that help second-stage entrepreneurs.  Prior to joining the foundation, she was executive director of the Greater Baltimore Technology Council and served as director of entrepreneurship and education for the Morino Institute, a nationally recognized entrepreneurship program in Reston, Va. She also directed George Mason University’s Century Club, a group formed to build alliances between the university and business community.

Chamber news: Pizza, giving back 'in my nature' for 'outstanding' Naperville businesswoman

Growing up in the Aurelio family, a few things became natural to Celeste Mattern Wagner: Pizza, business and giving back.
The Outstanding Chamber Member award she recently received from the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce shows she excels at all three.
Wagner, a Naperville resident and chamber member since 2011, was honored for her work operating three Aurelio's Pizza restaurants, running her own marketing firm, serving on two nonprofit boards and helping three charities or service clubs.
"Celeste is a perfect example of members who consistently contribute time, talent and treasure," Nicki Anderson, the chamber's president and CEO, said in a news release. "She is committed to this chamber and the community, which is evident in her willingness to step up whenever there's a need."
Wagner says it feels natural to help her community.
"I think it's in my nature. It's the right thing to do," said Wagner, a mother of three sons ages 36, 34 and 13 and a grandmother of four. "It's a way to show gratitude for what you have and to help others. It builds strong communities and connects people."
So, she says, does the chamber.
When she joined in 2011 to promote her Aurelio's shops in Naperville, Oakbrook Terrace and Woodridge, Wagner was put on a chamber "team" designed to allow operators who run various businesses to network and support each other's endeavors.
Wagner joined team "B to B" as its caterer and soon became a co-chairwoman then chairwoman of the group. Managing one team activity -- an annual "FunMattersToo" fundraiser for the Naperville nonprofit KidsMatter -- allows Wagner's planning skills to shine. Read more: Daily Herald
