Naperville Area Chamber Of Commerce Hosts 2019 State Of The City Address Featuring Mayor Steve Chirico

The 2019 State of the City Address hosted by the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce (NACC) will be held on Monday, March 18, 2019 at Embassy Suites Chicago-Naperville, 1823 Abriter Court in Naperville.  This event is presented by Navistar and Esser Hayes Insurance Group.

The address serves as an inspiring recap of the year’s events.  The discussion will highlight the monumental progression of the area’s growth including new and existing businesses.  Additionally, the address will turn an eye towards the future, as we will learn about a number of programs and initiatives scheduled for the coming year.

The NACC has hosted the State of the City Address for the past 35 years for the Naperville community starting with Mayor Peg Price.  This program continues to be highly regarded by the Naperville business community and community at large.

“The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce continues to provide relevant resources for the success of our business community. If our businesses are successful, our community is successful,” said Nicki Anderson, NACC President/CEO.  “We are committed to our partnership with the city of Naperville and Naperville Development Partnership to ensure that Naperville continues to be the number one choice for businesses and innovation.”

The Mayor also uses the program as an opportunity to recognize Naperville’s city officials and employees for their accomplishments and dedication to the community.

“The State of the City address is an important occasion for the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Naperville,” Mayor Steve Chirico said. “This address is an opportunity to look back on the success stories of the past several years and showcase the vision of what’s to come in Naperville. Focusing on four main goals – financial stability, economic development, public safety and high-performing government – this year’s speech will show how Naperville is a game changer in terms of innovation and creativity in serving our residents, businesses and visitors.”

Registration and networking begin at 10:45 a.m. doors open at 11:15 a.m. with the program and lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m.  To make a reservation, call the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce at 630.355.4141 or register online at www.naperville.net.  Due to the popularity of this luncheon, early registration is highly recommended.  Walk-in registration will not be available.

Greater La Porte Chamber, Greater La Porte Economic Development Corp. Teaming Up

Two organizations in La Porte are joining forces. The boards of directors for the Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce and the Greater La Porte Economic Development Corp. have formed an alliance aimed at aligning the organizations’ overall vision.
The groups say they will continue to operate their functions independently but share staff and workspace to achieve their goals as they represent the business interests of the greater La Porte community. The next step, according to the organizations, is to hold “strategic visioning workshops” to determine their shared vision, new name and brand identity.
Bert Cook will serve as Director of the Alliance.
"Essentially, we want to invigorate and improve what is working well and shed what isn’t," Cook said in a news release. "The best way to do that is to rebuild our organizations in conjunction with each other. It is a tremendous opportunity. Our boards have entrusted us with the challenge of building an innovative center for economic prosperity."
The groups say establishing the alliance will likely create capacity for additional staff resources in key areas, which can be used for programs such as the Chamber’s Workforce Development Task Force and the GLEDC’s prospect development initiatives.

A major staffing announcement related to the alliance is expected next month during the State of the City address.  Read more: Inside Indiana Business

Chamber issue: Interstate 81 legislation fuels debate over tolls

The state says critical improvements to Interstate 81 will cost more than $2 billion. And tolls are necessary to raise that kind of money.

Supporters like the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce CEO Joyce Waugh say failing to act will carry a high price as well.

"When it is painful enough then you have to do something," Waugh told WDBJ7, "and what we're seeing are higher fatality rates, higher incident rates. We're seeing such significant delays unlike in any other corridor in the Commonwealth of Virginia."

Local trucking companies such as Lawrence Transportation say they want to see improvements on I-81 as well.

But with the potential tolls on trucks topping 55 dollars, they say they are bearing a burden that everyone should share.

K.T. Treat is Director of Business Development for Lawrence Transportation.

"Our top expense is labor and benefits, second largest expense is fuel, and with this proposal it's going to be our third largest expense for the trucking industry," Treat said in an interview. "That's unfair." Read more: WDBJ

Picayune Chamber event: Opportunity Zone more than likely won’t be moved

Community members and business leaders in Picayune heard from a representative of the Mississippi Development Authority during an event held this week by the Greater Picayune Area Chamber of Commerce.
Jamie Miller, deputy director of MDA, updated attendees on a program called Opportunity Zone and gave new information about the availability of BP settlement funding.
The biggest topic for local business owners was the creation of an opportunity zone in the city of Picayune. Miller said the zones were created as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, and Mississippi was the first to create zones upon passage of the Act. Miller said 18 were created within Mississippi. Business owners can utilize the Opportunity Zone to get relief from taxes by making investments within the Opportunity Zone.
Picayune’s Opportunity Zone primarily falls in residential areas, and none of it is in the city’s Industrial Park, which appeared to be a point of contention for those in attendance during Wednesday’s presentation.
Questions as to whether the Opportunity Zone could be moved to include the Industrial Park were posed. Miller said that while technically the zone could be moved, it would require action from Congress, which he felt was unlikely.
The maps were created using census data focusing on areas with the highest poverty rate. According to MDA’s website, areas “with a poverty rate of 20 percent or greater and/or family income less than 80 percent of the area median income, were eligible for consideration.”
In relation to the BP funding, Miller said the $750 million settlement from the company will be doled out in payments until about 2033. The first payment of $160 million was made in 2016, and all but $27 million has been spent on projects to improve roads, bridges and other infrastructure.
For the next 14 years, the state will receive $30 million per year, of which 25 percent will be used for projects across the entire state, and 75 percent will be allocated for projects in the lower six counties, including Pearl River. Read more: Picayune Item

Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Tax Reform Tied to Lower Electricity Costs; Will save $1.34 Billion in Michigan; 875 Million in Virginia; Savings information on 10 other states

President and CEO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Key Takeaway

The positive effects of last year’s tax reform legislation continue to ripple through the economy, benefiting both businesses and consumers in a variety of ways. One of the positive impacts was uncovered in a new analysis released by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Energy Institute (GEI) this month, which found that electricity customers across the U.S. are saving millions as a result of the law.

Across the 12 states analyzed so far—with results for additional states to come—customer savings over the next five years will range from $100 million in Maine to over $3 billion in California. This is a positive development for businesses, which will see lower operating expenses and increased efficiency, as well as for consumers, who will save on average between $200 and $500 in utility costs over the next five years.
On top of this, it’s likely that customers will experience even greater cost reductions once the regulations governing the implementation of the tax law are fully determined. This drop in electricity costs represents real money for the American people, who will then use their extra cash to shop at local businesses and save for the future. This is why each state in the study also sees meaningful GDP growth and job gains as a result of these customer savings.
How has tax reform pulled this off? Investor-funded electric utilities set their rates based on their cost of service, a pricing mechanism that allows them to recoup their tax expenses from ratepayers. Tax reform lowered the rates for investor-owned utilities in almost every state, enabling them to share the benefits with their customers in the form of smaller monthly bills.
The analysis from GEI shows just one of the ways tax reform is having its intended pro-growth effect. The benefits of the tax law touch every state and nearly every industry, in part by boosting take home pay for 90% of American workers. By empowering businesses and families to keep more of their hard-earned money, the law is growing the economy and boosting business confidence.
The U.S. Chamber was a proud proponent of the tax reform legislation as it worked its way through Congress and into law. Since then, we’ve tracked some of the many American companies that have passed on their own savings to employees and customers in the form of reduced prices, salary raises, bonuses, and new benefits. These examples can be found on an interactive map at uschamber.com/tax-reform. The new analysis of electricity costs can be found at uschamber.com/global-energy-institute.

It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you'll do things differently. - Warren Buffet

Northern Virginia Chamber names new CEO

The Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce has hired longtime association executive Julie Coons as CEO and president.

Coons, who will take over Sept. 10, steps into the slot vacated by Jim Corcoranin early April. The chamber is the third-largest business organization in Greater Washington, reporting $3.12 million in revenue in 2017. It had 671 members as of June, up from 650 the year prior.

The newly named CEO most recently was chief operating officer at Arlington-based Council of Better Business Bureaus, an umbrella organization of national programs and charitable organizations with nearly $31 million in annual revenue. Coons, who couldn't be immediately reached for comment, was originally hired as its executive vice president of national programs in January 2017.

Chamber Chairwoman Jennifer Siciliano, chief communications and external affairs officer at Inova Health System, said in a statement that Coons' track record of leading such organizations and her past collaborations with and advocacy for businesses makes her “uniquely positioned” to lead the chamber into its next season of growth.

Coons previously served as CEO of the Electronic Retailing Association from December 2008 to April 2016, CEO of the Maryland Tech Council from October 2004 to November 2008 and executive vice president at the Wireless Infrastructure Association from April 2001 to October 2004.

At the Electronic Retailing Association, she took over an organization operating in the red and, across eight years, cut its liabilities and expenses to yield positive net income, according to nonprofit disclosures I reviewed. Earlier this year, the association said it would cease operations because of declines in its revenue and number of dues-paying members.

Corcoran took the helm of the Northern Virginia chamber in 2010, when it was called the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce. In 2015, he led the group's rebranding effort, saying the regional name better reflected its mission. Corcoran, who most recently earned $242,375 in compensation in 2016, the most recent year available, stayed on after his announced departure until the middle of June to assist with the transition. No reason was given for his departure.

In the chamber's statement on its new leadership Wednesday, Coons hailed its business reputation in the region and said the group is well-positioned to develop new opportunities for businesses. The chamber made lobbying for dedicated Metro funding one of its top priorities leading up to a decision by all three jurisdictions to approve a transit funding boost earlier this year. It has also hosted several economic events in recent months, while kickstarting its own incubator and accelerator program.

The McCormick Group, a national executive search consulting firm, led the search.

Gulfport Chamber of Commerce Legislative Luncheon

The casino industry has greatly shaped the Mississippi Gulf Coast and with sports betting on the rise, the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce chose to have the executive director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission speak at their legislative luncheon.
Allen Godfrey spoke to members of the chamber of commerce and other community members on the overall history of the gaming industry in Mississippi and how sports betting will fall into that history.
Godfrey says every casino on the Gulf Coast has at least shown interest with only one not having a sports book up and running or in the works. “It’s huge. It’s big, a lot of excitement. They’re starting out small, most of them are starting out small with an investment and their anticipation is it will grow which will mean more investment and reinvestment in their properties and based on what I’ve seen it is generating additional foot traffic.”
Sports betting officially opened at the Hard Rock today as well as Boomtown Casino and Hollywood Casino. The Beau Rivage and IP Casino have already been taking sports bets. The Palace and Harrah’s sports books open Monday. Read more: WXXV 25

"I'm excited about it, I think it's a great way for local businesses to come together and exchange ideas." Casada said. She hopes to bring a fresh perspective to the chamber. Read more: Daily Independent

Good morning #Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Chicago Fed article: Economic Trends: Understanding global trends in long-run real interest rates

Real, or inflation-adjusted, interest rates may well be the most important prices for any nation’s economy. They govern intertemporal purchasing decisions facing households, firms, and all levels of government. That is, virtually all interactions in the marketplace that entail making a choice between spending now and spending later necessarily involve real interest rates, which specify the real cost of borrowing to make a purchase or, on the flip side, the real gain from saving.

As we show in a recent paper (Yi and Zhang, 2016), there is no discernible trend in long-run real interest rates1 for the 20 largest economies in the world that spans the entirety of the past 60 years. However, over three subperiods, distinct trends can be observed.2 We see a general decline in global real interest rates from the early 1960s through the mid-1970s, then an upward trend in these rates until the late 1980s, and finally, another downward trend through the present day. Moreover, we observe that long-run averages of real interest rates across countries have converged over the past quarter of a century—a pattern consistent with an increasingly financially integrated world.

In this article, we use a simple theoretical framework to derive the fundamental economic forces behind movements in long-run real interest rates. Our framework implies an arbitrage relationship that links the risk-free real interest rate to the marginal product of capital, or MPK (the additional output from an extra unit of physical capital, such as machinery); the depreciation rate of capital; and the risk premium (which captures the riskiness of a capital investment). Specifically, the lower the MPK, the higher the depreciation rate of capital, and the greater the risk premium, all else being equal, the lower the real interest rate is. In addition, we use our framework to derive the forces underlying MPK itself—such as total factor productivity (TFP)3 and the capital-to-labor ratio. A decrease in TFP and an increase in the capital-to-labor ratio will tend to decrease MPK (and therefore real interest rates). Read more: Chicago Fed

Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce supports “YES” vote on Saginaw Public School District Millage Renewal on Tuesday, May 2, 2017

Saginaw, Mich – On Tuesday, May 2, 2017, the residents of Saginaw, Zilwaukee, Buena Vista and Kochville Township (all municipalities within the Saginaw Public School District) will go to the polls to vote on a ballot proposal to renew the 19-mil non-homestead millage for Saginaw Public School District.

If passed, the millage will allow the Saginaw Public School District to collect per-pupil funding for the students absorbed when the Buena Vista School District was dissolved. Since that time, the Saginaw Public Schools absorbed students from the BV School District but there was no legal authority to collect the non-homestead taxes.

“Passing this millage request simply allows the Saginaw Public School District to collect non-homestead taxes paid by business, in order to cover the costs of the additional students previously attending Buena Vista Public Schools”, said Saginaw County Chamber President & CEO, Bob VanDeventer. “The businesses in Saginaw County support the school district. They recognize that this millage must pass in order to authorize the Saginaw Public School District to collect those tax dollars.”

Nexteer Executive Director, Global Corporate Affairs, Luis Canales said that “it is important that this millage vote passes. The Saginaw Public Schools provide educational services to these additional students and the funding needs to follow. Nexteer has been a willing partner in supporting public schools and will continue to support public education in Saginaw.”

The 28-member Board of Directors for the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce overwhelmingly supported passage of this millage.

Cambridge Area Chamber host: Location scouting in Wisconsin

For filmmakers, there's many pieces that must be put together to create a film. From casting to lighting, art direction to promotion, it can be an overwhelming task for a small crew on a limited budget - and setting the scene requires access to locations.
Film Wisconsin and Cambridge-area sponsors held a "boot camp" for local filmmakers who need help setting the scene. The Cambridge workshop was led by professional location scout Nick Langhoff, who has secured movie and commercial locations in a cross-country career.
"A lot of times, I get a call from L.A. or New York, and they're looking for a certain location," Langhoff says. "Could be a farm. Could be a football field. Could be a general location where I'm just trying to find a woods or something."
While Langhoff has made scouting a full-time gig, many independent filmmakers have to take it on as part of their job - and don't know where to start.
Langhoff offered guidance at today's workshop at question-and-answer sessions where guests asked questions about securing permission, working with local residents, and what to look for when scouting a great spot. He shared personal experiences in Wisconsin and beyond as lunch and coffee were served.

Guests were also grouped together and sent out to chosen locations, including a schoolhouse, a farm and a local winery. They toured the locations, discussing how they could be used for filming, then brought back their findings to present to the group before an optional networking event at Plow Restaurant.
Film Wisconsin, Cambridge Area Chamber of Commerce, Keystone Grill, Plow Restaurant and LMS Development sponsored the event. WMTV News

Bolingbrook Chamber Young Professionals Associates Speed Mentoring

On behalf of the Young Professionals Associate of the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce I wanted to extend one last invitation to tonight’s Speed Mentoring event being held at Tailgater’s in Bolingbrook.

“If you could get in front of the boss for 7 minutes what would you ask? Are you motivated to progress within your organization? Now is your opportunity to garner insight and knowledge from some of the top small and large business professionals in a fun, fast paced environment. The Young Professionals Association (YPA) of the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to join them at their first speed mentoring reception. Registered attendees will have rotating, five minute conversations with different professional mentors who will discuss, ask questions and answer questions utilizing their business experience. This event will be limited to the first 20 young leaders to sign up and will take place immediately preceding the YPA March Madness Event on March 16th. There is no charge for this opportunity.”

As the chair for the YPA committee this year, I am excited that we are starting this mentoring piece.  It is something we are going to be building into our future events as well.  I believe it is going to be such an asset for our younger business community in Bolingbrook, as they can have the opportunity to learn and grow from successful people in our community.  So please, if you have employees in your business who are newer, younger, or motivated please forward this email and encourage them to attend.  It is a free benefit for being a Chamber member!

HGTV carpenter to headline EMBDC Home & Garden Show

With spring only hours away, many local homeowners are thinking about home repairs and renovations – be it do-it-yourself projects or something major that requires the expertise of a professional.
How to begin? The East Mississippi Business Development Corporation Home & Garden Show may be a good start.
Set for April 20, the premiere EMBDC event will showcase what’s available locally to help residents with their home improvement projects, as well as provide opportunities for them to purchase products to complete them.
“Meridian has so many businesses and individuals who have business that relate to and can provide things for your home and garden,” said Casey Holladay, events coordinator for the EMBDC.
Early registration for booth space is currently underway for home and garden entities to promote their services and/or sell their products.
“For instance, we have someone who owns a nursery who is bringing flowers to sell,” Holladay said. “Furniture store owners, bank representatives for loans, exterminators, carpet cleaners, architects – anyone connected with home repairs, improvements is encouraged to participate. We’re hoping to have 75 booths or more.”
Early registration continues through April 1. After the date, an additional $50 will be charged. Applications are available online at embdc.org or at the EMBDC office, which is located at 1901 Front St. A.
Local home and garden experts won’t be the only ones at the expo to advise homeowners on their home improvement projects.
Clint Harp, owner of Harp Design Company and best known for his role in the HGTV show “Fixer Upper” will make two presentations, as well as talk to attendees during a special meet-and-greet.
“‘Fixer Upper’ is HCTV’s No. 1 show,” Holladay said, “And who better to offer advice to local homeowners than the individual who builds the furniture and other items used for the homes remodeled in the show?”
Recognized as “Fixer Upper’s” “dumpster diving, reclaimed wood-loving carpenter, Harp quit his sales job in 2011 to pursue his dream of building furniture and owning his own company.
Now, together with his wife Kelly and their three kids, the Harps spend each day pursuing their dream and blazing the new trail of owning their own company. Harp Design Co. provides quality furniture and home goods to customers all across the U.S. and abroad. Constantly adjusting to unexpected national exposure, the Harps work hard each day to grow as a family and a business whose core values are love, beauty, and creativity. Read more: Meridian Star
