Chamber collaboration: Officials give support of Manistee's Hampton Inn project

A majority of people who spoke during a recent public hearing for the Hampton Inn in Manistee were in favor of the project.

A Commercial Rehabilitation District for the hotel, which is planned for 101 Lakeshore Drive, was unanimously approved by the Manistee City Council Tuesday during its regularly scheduled meeting.

A public hearing was held for citizens to speak about the project. Four of five people spoke in support of the project in its current iteration.

Gini Pelton, of Manistee, said she was happy with the project.

"Even if you are adjusting the taxes for this type of development, I believe it is still a win-win situation for our community. We will still be getting all of the resources that they're going to bring to our community back into our community," Pelton said.

She noted the amount of money that the city was able to collect in taxes on the former Lakeshore Motel, which was located on the same property, is nowhere near the amount of taxes that the Hampton Inn will generate when it is completed.

"Everything they're going to develop down there will be good. And for those who maybe aren't aware 101 S. Lakeshore (Drive) when it was a motel was paying taxes at the rate of around a $200,000 home in the community or less; I didn't get a chance to look up the exact numbers today. So if you think you're losing money on the deal, you're not losing money. We're always we're going to be ahead of this game that water and sewer ... jobs ... everything. Anyway, I totally support this."

Of the three others who spoke, all hand a part in the project getting off the ground: Manistee County Board of Commission chair and Economic Development Council chair Jeff Dontz; Marc Miller, director of Economic Development for the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce; and Peter Beukema of Hotel Ventures Manistee LLC., the development company for the project.

#BestChamber practices: Barbi Jones, Cabbarus County Chamber: Get your High school juniors and seniors on-board with FASFA

Dear friends,
The Chamber continually works with our community partners to help ensure you have a well-educated talent pipeline with the necessary skills and training to fill your current and future workforce needs.

While COVID has caused many hurdles for students, we know that a brighter future is coming! We want our students to understand the career possibilities available to them, and many of those start with the completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. Last year, over $110 million in federal aid was left on the table, and only 30% of Cabarrus County and Kannapolis City Students completed this form that shows them grants, loans, work study opportunities, scholarships and institutional funds which help make college affordable.

Our Cabarrus County Schools, Kannapolis City Schools and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College are working hard to let students know about the FAFSA and what is available to them. The form can be completed junior and senior year! We know parents and other family members play crucial roles in their students’ post-high school career decisions, and we are hoping as employers to many of these parents, you can help us spread the word. I am attaching a letter to parents that explains what is needed to complete the FAFSA and ways parents can get help completing it. Would you consider sending this to your workforce or posting it in internal communications? Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing information on our Facebook and Instagram pages. If your company is active on these platforms, please consider sharing our posts!

We know when this community works together, great things happen! Thank you for your consideration of helping us move the Class of 2021 forward to bright futures!

FAFSA Letter to Parents

Best Regards,
Barbi Jones
Executive Director

Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce Announces Support for Holt Bond Issue on May 4 Ballot

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) has announced its support for a $148 million bond issue in the Holt Public School District.  The May 4ballot proposal would include improvements in four key areas of critical infrastructure, safety and security, learning environments, and innovation over the next eight years. Taxpayers will be asked to vote on a projected tax decrease of 1.77 mils compared to the previous year’s tax rate.

“The Lansing Regional Chamber has been consistent in supporting our students through the support of bond proposals for school districts,” said Tim Daman, president & CEO, LRCC. “This investment is desperately needed.  The Holt Public School District will be investing approximately $148 million in the health, safety, and security of the buildings to benefit the students, staff, and community.

“The last time we asked voters to consider a bond of this type was the year 2000,” said Dr. David Hornak, superintendent, Holt Public Schools. “Our last bond was focused on the secondary level and provided the funding for the high school. This bond proposal will focus on improving all our tired facilities. However, we will be emphasizing projects at the elementary level, which includes reconstructing two elementary schools.”

If approved, the new bond will create equitable access to resources by reconstructing two new TK-5 buildings at opposite ends of the District, while reducing the number of building transitions for students. The proposal also allows for:

·         Reducing transitions between buildings supports relationship building and improved student outcomes

·         Proposing a new structure: TK-5; middle school,6-8; and traditional high school,9-12

·         Reconstructing two new TK-5 elementary schools, Dimondale and Sycamore, on their current site locations

·         Reconfiguring existing elementary buildings to accommodate grades TK-5, including possible classroom and gym additions

·         Adding classroom space at Washington Woods to create a 6-8 middle school; cafeteria expansion

·         Adding new technology and infrastructure will enable students and staff to have easy access to innovative learning opportunities with updated devices and equipment

·         Making select improvements to athletic and performing arts

The Holt bond proposal also calls for: updating facilities to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for students and staff; updating building infrastructure that is at or past its useful life cycle to address aging facility issues district-wide; and creating flexible, modern spaces that support creativity and collaboration while helping students build up their experiences each year until they graduate from Holt Public Schools.

“It is rare that a community ever has the opportunity to generate nearly $150 million to keep kids healthy, safe and secure,” Scott Ammon, Holt resident. “Other debt is being paid off, and the district is asking for some of this back to invest in our schools. This is a smart, sensible, and financially strategic strategy.”

Aurora Regional Chamber named 2020 IACCE Chamber of the Year in the large Chamber Group

The
Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce, the voice of and catalyst for business success in the Aurora region, has been named the 2020 Outstanding Chamber of the Year in the large chamber category by the Illinois Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (IACCE).

The IACCE Outstanding Chamber of the Year Award recognizes organization excellence in chambers of commerce and provides a unique benchmarking opportunity to assess a chamber’s strengths. The award is based on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s accreditation process for local chambers and highlights accomplishments in the areas of leadership, governance, finance, advocacy and membership development.

"Under the leadership of president & CEO Jessica Linder Gallo, the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce has thrived, showing that commitment to membership and strong leadership can grow an organization and positively impact its community,” said Ginny Glasner, ACE, 2020 IACCE Chairman of the Board and President & CEO of the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce. “Through a collaborative approach, the organization has implemented notable programs, including a corporate rebrand, launch of several digital initiatives (i.e., blogs, video blogs, soon-to-launch website redesign, etc.), an implications to employers webinar series, several COVID-19 survey reports, and a series of industry roundtables to discuss the impacts of the pandemic in each industry. They have successfully established partnerships, especially their education-workforce collaboration, and continue to develop and model best practices in the chamber industry as evidenced by their continued U.S. Chamber accreditation status that can be replicated around the state.”

“This is a huge honor and one for which I am immensely proud. Recognition from IACCE as the 2020 Outstanding Chamber of the Year reinforces our corporate values to always innovate and make big impacts, "said Jessica Linder Gallo, president & CEO. “As the convener of leaders and influencers and the voice of business success, it is our role to lead the business community even in the toughest of times. As we always have, we will continue to rise to any challenge for the good of the Aurora region.”

“Even in the midst of a global pandemic, the Aurora Regional Chamber has performed at an exceptional level and continues to be bold in its vision, strategic plan and leadership,” said Marisa Medgyesi, Earthmover Credit Union & Aurora Regional Chamber Board of Directors Chairperson. “This award recognizes the dedication and hard work put forth by Jessica Linder Gallo and her team to be the unifying force in the Aurora business community.”

The recognition caps off a broader period of innovation and business advocacy for the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce. This year, the Aurora Regional Chamber launched a new brand and enhanced member tools that bring added functionality aimed at greatly improving access to and visibility of members. The Chamber also released two COVID-19 survey finding reports: the COVID-19 Business Implications Survey Report which built upon the findings from the first survey report, the Business Impact of COVID-19 report, brought to you by Waubonsee Community College. That report analyzed the data from 524 responses from businesses of all sizes, operation tenure and across all industry sectors on challenges they faced as they looked to reopen and operate in the age of COVID-19.

There is also access to a couple additional parking spaces toward the back, Howard said.

The Chamber's asking price is $325,000, Howard said. The brick building encompasses 5,500 square feet, Howard said.

"We just do not need all the space because we had a downsize of our staff," Howard said. "Unfortunately, we had to make some layoffs because of COVID-19."

The Joliet Chamber intends to find other office space to lease in the downtown, preferably in the area of Chicago Street or along Van Buren Street, Howard said.

Howard said the Joliet Chamber would be ideal for a large Cook County or Du Page County law firm looking to expand because of the opening of the new $215 million Will County Courthouse. The 10-floor glass building will open for court activities next week. Source: Patch

Elkhorn Area Chamber collaboration: New drive-through holiday event set for Walworth County fairgrounds

The Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Walworth County and the Walworth County Food and Diaper Bank have embarked on a countywide mission to ignite the magic of the upcoming holiday season.

Let It Glow, a half-mile drive-through festival of lights, will be Dec. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Walworth County Fairgrounds, 411 E. Court St., Elkhorn.

Over 20 whimsical holiday stations will be part of the event. There will also be a Santa Station, where children can wave to the jolly man in red and hand their letters to one of Santa’s elves to be taken straight to the North Pole.

The Covid-19 pandemic has cast uncertainty over how the holidays will look this year.

Tammy Dunn, executive director for the United Way of Walworth County, said she was approached with the event idea by Maryann Zimmerman, general manager of the Walworth County Food and Diaper Bank.

“For years, I imagined a lighted drive-through festival at the fairgrounds, and this seemed the perfect time to join forces,” said Dunn. “Let It Glow will be a real win for all of Walworth County, including the performers, area nonprofits, the business community and our families.”

Chris Clapper, executive director for the Elkhorn Area Chamber of Commerce, said the fairgrounds will be the perfect venue for the event.

While it is intended to become a tradition for Walworth County families, there is the hope that others become involved.

“While our committee can administrate the event, we need help breathing life into the animation of Let It Glow,” Clapper said.

Let It Glow organizers have several ways for others to become involved.

Businesses can choose from five sponsorship levels, and families can sponsor and decorate a Glow Tree to be displayed along Balsam Boulevard.

Groups can sign up to build a display or entertain the audience with one of 20-plus Glow Station stops along the route, and volunteers can sign up to help behind the scenes.

The event follows the Elkhorn Chamber’s Annual Tree Lighting on the Square.

There will be no cost to drive through the park.

More information can be found on the Facebook event page, or by calling the Elkhorn Chamber at 262-723-5788, United Way at 262-374-4474 or Walworth County Food Pantry at 262-723-4488.
