Transportation the Focus of La Crosse Area Chamber meeting

Roads and rail were the subjects of a forum on transportation in Wisconsin Monday.
Among the items discussed was a proposal to add a second Amtrak train from the Twin Cities to Chicago.
The biggest news was that repairs to La Crosse Street are coming.
"It's a shared road if you will. It is technically a state road, but we feel here it is a major artery for the city, and so hearing that those changes are happening soon and in collaboration is really great news for us," said La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vicki Markussen.
Repairs on the street are slated for 2022.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Craig Thompson was one of the guest speakers at the forum. See more: WXOW News

Ridgeland Chamber Members Enjoyed an Evening with Marshall Ramsey

Ridgeland Chamber Honors Businesses, Volunteers

The City of Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce is committed to showcasing our business community and all the many products and services our businesses have to offer, 2020 Chamber President Chase Bryan of Young Wells Williams, P.A. told a packed house at the Chamber’s annual awards banquet last week after outgoing President Bill Bethany of Community Bank of Mississippi passed the gavel.

“With our 2020 theme Ridgeland . . . Bringing Mississippi Together, we will place renewed emphasis on not only helping our businesses to succeed, but on bringing us all together,” Bryan said.

The Ridgeland Chamber celebrated businesses, volunteers and city leaders at the banquet which honored award winners.

Business entrepreneur Rainey Rives received the 2019 Gene F. McGee Economic Development Award for renovating and remodeling old buildings and changing the look of Highway 51.

Scott Jones of Safe Passage Driving Service was named the 2019 Diplomat of the Year; Linda Carver of Trustmark National Bank received the 2019 Volunteer of the Year Award; the Ridgeland Tourism Commission was the recipient of the 2019 Community Service Award and Green Oak Florist & Garden Center was named 2019 Business of the Year.

Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee named Karen McKie of Green Oak Florist & Garden Center City Maker 2019.

“If our City Maker 2019 had one wish, it would be to beautify every city in the world – one city at a time,” McGee said in presenting McKie with Ridgeland’s highest honor. McGee praised McKie for her role in planting a three-acre field of zinnias and wildflowers along Highway 51 at School Street where the City of Ridgeland is building a new City Center / City Hall complex.

“These beautiful flowers brought hundreds of comments, telephone calls, e-mails and text messages to the City and Chamber, not only from our citizens, but also from visitors,” McGee added. “Zinnia Fields Forever” went on to win Keep Mississippi Beautiful’s 2019 First Place Beautification Award and Keep America Beautiful’s First Place Innovative Partnership Award.”

Award-winning editorial cartoonist, author, inspirational speaker and two-time Pulitzer finalist Marshall Ramsey was the guest speaker at the banquet, sharing his cartoons and telling entertaining stories of his career as a cartoonist. “Mississippi is the best state for politics, storytellers, sweet tea and raising a family”, Ramsey said.

The award-winning Raphael Semmes and the Raphael Semmes Combo provided music for the evening and guests were surprised but thrilled to hear the “National Anthem” sung by international recording artist Guy Hovis, a native Mississippian.

Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber map: Town Square Publications: Promises Made, Promises kept!

The Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber of Commerce recently worked with Town Square Publications on the production of a map. Town Square Publications provided all the map design and cartography for the product and sold the sponsorships, so there was no cost to the chamber. The chamber provided local content and photos that showed our organization’s focus on promoting our communities and helping our businesses to thrive. Town Square Publications provided the chamber a proof before going to print. The result was a top quality map. We were especially pleased with the quality of the printing and the paper.

The chamber works hard to identify programs that will be of benefit to our chamber members, such as the 28th Street Metro Cruise program that draws over 200,000 to our area and the annual Santa Parade. The Wyoming-Kentwood chamber map is another great example, and the chamber received the additional benefit of non-dues revenue.

Your company delivered on your promises. We appreciate our partnership with Town Square Publications and will call on them again for the next project.

Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a GREAT day!

A Hidden Cybersecurity Risk: Third-Party Relationships

With cybersecurity a growing priority among the business community, more companies are taking important steps to better understand their own security risks. However, many fail to understand the risks presented by third parties.
In fact, a large proportion of security incidents experienced by businesses are a result of third-party relationships – which is why third-party risk management (commonly known in the industry as TPRM) should be a fundamental part of any comprehensive cybersecurity risk management program.
In order to properly address risks, businesses must first identify and understand risks before leveraging relevant information and assessments to inform decision-making. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and FICO recently released their Q2 Assessment of Business Cyber Risk (ABC) report, which highlights the need for effective TPRM so that businesses can better manage the risks of third parties and avoid unwarranted risks and potential costs associated with third-party cyber breaches.
The risks a company “inherits” from its third parties can be significant. In some cases, companies have suffered a breach when hackers successfully penetrated third parties and then used those stolen credentials to access sensitive customer data.
There’s ample data to support the need for greater focus on TPRM. More than 60% of U.S. chief information security officers (CISOs) indicated their firm was the victim of a third-party cybersecurity breach, according to Ponemon Institute’s 2018 report. The survey also found that 75% of firms believed their risk of third-party incidents is increasing.
It is imperative that businesses understand their own cyber risk, as well as that of third parties. Accurately and efficiently assessing third-party cybersecurity risk has become a critical priority for many firms. As such, the U.S. Chamber’s newly released Q2 ABC report includes cybersecurity expert and case study findings on TPRM, as well as key steps businesses can take to identify and mitigate third-party risk.

Oxford-Lafayette Chamber member: from LOU View: How Schools Are Failing Workers-And 10 Ways to Fix It

Express Releases Recommendations to Improve Education

"Soft Skills" Gap Is Keeping Job Seekers from Good Jobs

"They have never been taught basic interview skills."

Oxford, MS August 19, 2019 - Express Employment Professionals is releasing 10 recommendations today to help schools better train students for the demands of the modern workforce.

According to the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of open jobs in the United States continues to exceed the number of job seekers. Employers lament the fact that schools are not preparing job seekers with the skills they need to succeed in the workplace. Notably, these are not just technical skills. There is also a persistent "soft skills" gap.

While many of the most glaring issues arise in high school, the post-secondary education system is falling short too. In a survey of 879 college-educated job seekers and business decision-makers, 57% said that they are not working in a profession that "aligns" with their education. The survey was conducted in July 2019 through the Express Refresh Leadership and Job Journey blogs.

Based on input from Express franchise owners, local workforce experts, and surveys, Express developed 10 recommendations for educators:

#BestChamber practices: Orion Chamber of Commerce: Chamber Survey 2019

Dear John,

Periodically, the Chamber asks both members and non-members for their views on the Orion Chamber - what we do well and what could be improved upon. We encourage you to take the survey - it helps to ensure that we continually strive towards what members and potential members are looking for in a chamber of commerce.

To take the survey, click on the link below.

Thank you for your participation in the survey. We appreciate you taking the time to complete it.

Sincerely,
Kim Urbanowski, Executive Director
Orion Area Chamber of Commerce

From Frank J. Kenny --- This Week's Chamber Social Media Tip: Waupaca Chamber

Isn't it incredibly frustrating that so many people are clueless when it comes to what chambers do?

They think you work for the government. They think you are a volunteer who does ribbon cuttings. They really don't know what you do. Even business people don't!

It is up to you to get the real story out there. But you can't force people to listen to anything long and in-depth.

But you can get the story out there a little bit at a time.

Check out this post from the Waupaca Chamber.

The image says, A Big Business Starts Small. We can help...

The text area says, "We would love to help you succeed."

People that see this kind of message again and again on social media will start to understand that the chamber is there for them.

Tip: Use social media to tell your audience and community what you do for them. Give them little bites. Let them know who you help and how you help them. Most people won't read a article but an eye catching image will stop them in their tracks. A like, comment, or share will look like an endorsement of you.

Nice job Waupaca Chamber.

Note: This image is in Content Marketing Bundle library. There are now 1165 pre-made images like this for you in the library.

LEAP - La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership: Letter from Mike Riehle, President of Chamber Services

We have had an exciting year thus far and hopefully more success to continue in the remainder of 2019 and beyond. I wanted to first thank you all for continuing to support our transition with your partnership and resources.

We held the Disney Institute in partnership with the La Porte Community Schools and the La Porte Education Foundation, which had over 175 participants in attendance at Purdue Northwest, Westville Campus. This was the second series of four which will continue in the summer of 2020.

We provided our first "Maximizing Your Membership" quarterly series on July 9, 2019. We had 15 participants between the morning and afternoon sessions. This series will be held quarterly with the next session scheduled for October 8, 2019. We focus on giving our new members and current members an opportunity to take a deeper dive into LEAP's mission and activities throughout the year. This is a key component to engaging our members and bringing value to your membership.

Since March 2019 we have had over 40 Retention and Expansion visits to both member and non-member businesses. We have utilized partnerships with our R&E committee, the La Porte County Economic Development Office, City of La Porte leadership, the Northwest Indiana Forum and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. We are gaining valuable insight to our area business opportunities and challenges. The largest opportunity derived from these meetings is creating an employable workforce in the greater La Porte area.

If you haven't visited our new website, please go to www.laportepartnership.com LEAP partnered with Duneland Media for an upgraded, sharp and user-friendly site to provide our membership with a more interactive experience. Please make sure you are following our weekly activities and like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LaPortePartnership, Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/LEAPartnership, and Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/laportepartnership

Our Workforce Taskforce has been a valuable connector to helping bridge the gap between our workforce, employers and resources to fill every job in the greater La Porte area. Their current initiative involves a survey circulating through our community, stakeholders and employers on Child Care needs in our county. They are gathering valuable data to provide solutions resulting from Child Care obstacles identified in this survey to help improve employee attendance, efficiency and culture.

Lastly, we are asking our members to provide the most current contact information for your company. As we continue to look for ways to improve our processes, we have found that we need to keep up with the changing workforce. We can only disseminate information efficiently if we have the correct contact information in our database. Please take a moment to sign into your ChamberMaster account or email our office your primary, billing and any additional contacts so the right people are receiving correspondence from LEAP.

Sincerely,

Mike Riehle
President of Chamber Services

Fond du Lac County’s Cost of Living Remains Below National Average

FOND DU LAC, WI - The 2019 second quarter Cost of Living Index (COLI) for Fond du Lac County has decreased slightly from first quarter and has remained below the national average. The after-tax cost for a professional/managerial standard of living is 96.0 or 4.0% below the national average of 100.0. Our county continues to be a very affordable place to live, work, and raise a family.
Each quarter, Envision Greater Fond du Lac collects data for COLI which is produced by the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER). The Cost of Living Index measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services for professional and managerial households in the top income bracket. It is based on more than 90,000 prices covering 60 different items in 255 urban areas. The composite index of 96.0 for the Fond du Lac area is based on six different categories: grocery items, housing, utilities, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services.
Five locations in Wisconsin collected cost of living data in the second quarter of 2019 including Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Madison, and Wisconsin Rapids-Marshfield. The Green Bay area is the least expensive at 90.7 (9.3% below average) with Madison the most expensive in the state at 105.9 or 5.9% above average. Among all the urban areas collecting COLI data, New York (Manhattan), NY is the most expensive place to live at 242.5 (142.5% above average) and Harlingen, TX is the least expensive at 73.8 (26.2% below average).
Why is cost of living information important? A lower cost of living attracts people and businesses. If it costs less to live in Fond du Lac County, in addition to other quality of life benefits, attracting workforce talent and new businesses can be easier. For instance, housing costs in Fond du Lac County have an index of 83.4, or 16.6% less than the national average.
If you’re interested in learning more or want to help gather prices in 2019, please contact Envision Greater Fond du Lac at (920) 921-9500 or info@envisiongreaterfdl.com.

#BestChamber Practices: (Membership) - Cathy Hight: Psychographics Drive Join and Renewal Rates - (www.hightperformance.com) - her live webinar is June 19th

Most likely, you’re tracking demographics about your members.

If you’re not using psychographics, you really don’t know why members join and why they stay, or not. Knowing more about the “why” than the “what” could also help you attract new members and increase revenue.

Most associations collect basic information from prospects when they fill out the application to join. Aside from the basic “fields” like Company Name, Primary Contact Name, Company address, etc., the application may ask for the contact’s Position, Number of Full-Time Employees (FTE), Industry or NAISC code, Number of Offices/Locations, and other requested information. This information is then uploaded into the Association Management System (AMS) and used to set up the member account, list the member in the Directory, and for other internal functions.

The majority of the information collected from new members are geographic and demographic. If the new member is also asked to indicate the reason for joining, then a psychographic variable is also collected. In other words, geographic data explains where your member is; demographics explain who your member is, and psychographics explains what’s important to them.

When I’ve taught the Marketing Strategies course for the Institute of Organization Management (IOM), I ask students to work in small groups to develop a mini marketing plan for a specific program (e.g., Leadership, Young Professionals). One of the activities is to create 2-3 Target Profiles that include demographics and psychographics. Once the Target Profiles are developed, the groups create Targeted Messages that resonate with different audiences to sell the program. A “one size fits all” marketing strategy doesn’t result in high email open rates or registrations.

Even though I have taught this course for more than 14 years, I find that association professionals struggle with profiling the members they have. Identifying demographics is fairly easy if the information has been collected or is readily available but knowing what certain members value and why is a real puzzler. Is it because we don’t really understand our customers or target markets, or are we lacking the data that would provide the “business intelligence” we could use to develop marketing messages for members?
Demographics Give Us Much of the “What”

It’s easy to buy lists that contain demographic information such as age, gender, ethnicity, income, geographic location, as well as other types of information about where customers live and what they do for a living. This type of information can be found through a variety of sources like the American Fact Finder that is offered through the Census Bureau, for example. You can learn a lot about people, and even your neighbors, just by entering your zip code in Claritas PRIZM. (I found it interesting to learn that I live in a neighborhood where many residents do not have kids at home!)

The Census Bureau conducts surveys every five years to collect business demographics by zip codes. The last was conducted in 2017. Reviewing the Census Bureau Economic Census, you learn how many businesses are in your area by industry, number of employees and more. This is a great way to compare the Census results with your membership base to see how representative it is to the market or to consider possible target markets due to underserved areas in your base.

Although demographic data like the Census will help you know more about the types of businesses in the areas, it will not reveal what influences the business leaders to join or renew.

The Secret of Joining and Renewing Lies in the “Why”

Psychographics can tell you much more about your members and help you to market to prospects that have things in common. Many businesses use psychographic data to market to consumers based on information about the type of music they like, what car they drive or other brands they buy, how much they spend on entertainment, and where they shop. Services like Claritas PRIZM or Axiom can provide both demographic and psychographic information to help you better understand specific groups of people.

Psychographics can tell you a lot about why prospects join and why members renew each year based on the types of benefits they prefer, what types of committees they engage in, and which links they click on in emails. Psychographics help you to understand what they value and what influences their decisions.

A Member Profile Matrix can help you to distinguish between different types of members and what they value. The sample Matrix does not include demographic variables, although Community Investors and Community Builders tend to be larger enterprises while Business Investors and Business Builders are smaller.

You could create your own Matrix based on segments in your membership base and what they appear to have in common such as pain points, interests and their motivation to be members. Both demographic and psychographic variables should be used to create a sense to describe each segment.

By understanding who you serve, why they are members and what matters most to them, you will be able to develop messaging that resonates with each segment and communicate more effectively.

Here are some ways you can learn more about your members to help create your customized Matrix:
Ask survey questions that collect demographic information as well as psychographic info (e.g., why they are members, which programs they value most), then filter results and use cross tabs to analyze.
Identify benefits used by members and maintain that info with their account profiles.
Track which links members click on in emails and newsletters using a software that attaches “tags” that can be added to member profiles to help you to identify their interests and learn which opportunities matter more to them. The more you know, the better you can meet their needs!

Future Fox Cities Regional Career Expo for Local Students Seeks Business Participants
Annual career exploration and development event gets new name for 2020

APPLETON, Wis. (June 6, 2019) – The Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce’s annual career expo event for local students, now titled Future Fox Cities, will be held on March 4 and 5, 2020. Applications are now being accepted for business vendors at foxcitieschamber.com.

Under a new name in 2020, this annual event provides area students with an interactive platform to explore careers available in the Fox Cities Region. The 14-year event allows middle school students and high school students to connect with and learn from regional employers within the following six career clusters: health sciences; communication and information systems; industrial, manufacturing and engineering; human services and resources; business, marketing and management; and environmental and agricultural systems.

On the first day of the event, Wednesday, March 4, 8th grade students from several area middle schools will have the opportunity to interact with career professionals from a wide variety of regional employers to learn about career opportunities, expected starting salaries, skills and interests of employees and post high school training or education requirements. These interactive experiences will prepare students as they transition into high school and continue their academic and career planning.

The second day of the event, Thursday, March 5, welcomes high school students from area schools to experience a skills development format that focuses on students making meaningful connections with local employers at designated booths, as well as opportunities to attend a variety of breakout sessions focused on soft skills and career-based learning opportunities to enhance their career development.

“The name speaks for itself,” shared Amy Andersen, Director of Talent & K-16 Relations at the Fox Cities Chamber and Regional Partnership. “Businesses in the Fox Cities Region who want to develop and grow their talent need to cultivate their relationships with our future workforce while they are exploring opportunities as 8th through 12th graders. If employers wait, it may too late to attract this local talent later.”

Applications are now being accepted for businesses interested in participating in this annual event. This interactive event allows employers to get in front of their future workforce and provides awareness to the career opportunities available in the Fox Cities Region. Applications can be found at foxcitieschamber.com.

Future Fox Cities, previously known as Your Future LIVE!, is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 5, 2020 at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center in Downtown Appleton. Businesses can register and pay online through a simple registration form. The fee for businesses is $350 per booth for Fox Cities Chamber members and $450 per booth for non-members. It will include will include comments regarding taxpayer-friendly ideas on how to effectively address the public pension crisis as well as the need for reforming public education as well as giving parents more choices regarding where their children attend school. Bruce Carpenter, Executive Director of the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, said he’s excited to be able to schedule Waters to speak to the chamber.
“It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and thankfully we were able to bring Mr. Waters to speak to our chamber,” Carpenter said. “He’s a energetic, interesting speaker, and he will be discussing timely topics for which I think there is great interest right now in our community.
