Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a GREAT day!
A Hidden Cybersecurity Risk: Third-Party Relationships
With cybersecurity a growing priority among the business community, more companies are taking important steps to better understand their own security risks. However, many fail to understand the risks presented by third parties.
In fact, a large proportion of security incidents experienced by businesses are a result of third-party relationships – which is why third-party risk management (commonly known in the industry as TPRM) should be a fundamental part of any comprehensive cybersecurity risk management program.
In order to properly address risks, businesses must first identify and understand risks before leveraging relevant information and assessments to inform decision-making. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and FICO recently released their Q2 Assessment of Business Cyber Risk (ABC) report, which highlights the need for effective TPRM so that businesses can better manage the risks of third parties and avoid unwarranted risks and potential costs associated with third-party cyber breaches.
The risks a company “inherits” from its third parties can be significant. In some cases, companies have suffered a breach when hackers successfully penetrated third parties and then used those stolen credentials to access sensitive customer data.
There’s ample data to support the need for greater focus on TPRM. More than 60% of U.S. chief information security officers (CISOs) indicated their firm was the victim of a third-party cybersecurity breach, according to Ponemon Institute’s 2018 report. The survey also found that 75% of firms believed their risk of third-party incidents is increasing.
It is imperative that businesses understand their own cyber risk, as well as that of third parties. Accurately and efficiently assessing third-party cybersecurity risk has become a critical priority for many firms. As such, the U.S. Chamber’s newly released Q2 ABC report includes cybersecurity expert and case study findings on TPRM, as well as key steps businesses can take to identify and mitigate third-party risk.

Oxford-Lafayette Chamber member: from LOU View: How Schools Are Failing Workers-And 10 Ways to Fix It
Express Releases Recommendations to Improve Education
"Soft Skills" Gap Is Keeping Job Seekers from Good Jobs
"They have never been taught basic interview skills."
Oxford, MS August 19, 2019 - Express Employment Professionals is releasing 10 recommendations today to help schools better train students for the demands of the modern workforce.
According to the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of open jobs in the United States continues to exceed the number of job seekers. Employers lament the fact that schools are not preparing job seekers with the skills they need to succeed in the workplace. Notably, these are not just technical skills. There is also a persistent "soft skills" gap.
While many of the most glaring issues arise in high school, the post-secondary education system is falling short too. In a survey of 879 college-educated job seekers and business decision-makers, 57% said that they are not working in a profession that "aligns" with their education. The survey was conducted in July 2019 through the Express Refresh Leadership and Job Journey blogs.
Based on input from Express franchise owners, local workforce experts, and surveys, Express developed 10 recommendations for educators:

From Frank J. Kenny --- This Week's Chamber Social Media Tip: Waupaca Chamber
Isn't it incredibly frustrating that so many people are clueless when it comes to what chambers do?
They think you work for the government. They think you are a volunteer who does ribbon cuttings. They really don't know what you do. Even business people don't!
It is up to you to get the real story out there. But you can't force people to listen to anything long and in-depth.
But you can get the story out there a little bit at a time.
Check out this post from the Waupaca Chamber.
The image says, A Big Business Starts Small. We can help...
The text area says, "We would love to help you succeed."
People that see this kind of message again and again on social media will start to understand that the chamber is there for them.

Tip: Use social media to tell your audience and community what you do for them. Give them little bites. Let them know who you help and how you help them. Most people won't read a article but an eye catching image will stop them in their tracks. A like, comment, or share will look like an endorsement of you.
Nice job Waupaca Chamber.

LEAP - La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership: Letter from Mike Riehle, President of Chamber Services
We have had an exciting year thus far and hopefully more success to continue in the remainder of 2019 and beyond. I wanted to first thank you all for continuing to support our transition with your partnership and resources.
We held the Disney Institute in partnership with the La Porte Community Schools and the La Porte Education Foundation, which had over 175 participants in attendance at Purdue Northwest, Westville Campus. This was the second series of four which will continue in the summer of 2020.
We provided our first "Maximizing Your Membership" quarterly series on July 9, 2019. We had 15 participants between the morning and afternoon sessions. This series will be held quarterly with the next session scheduled for October 8, 2019. We focus on giving our new members and current members an opportunity to take a deeper dive into LEAP's mission and activities throughout the year. This is a key component to engaging our members and bringing value to your membership.
Since March 2019 we have had over 40 Retention and Expansion visits to both member and non-member businesses. We have utilized partnerships with our R&E committee, the La Porte County Economic Development Office, City of La Porte leadership, the Northwest Indiana Forum and the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. We are gaining valuable insight to our area business opportunities and challenges. The largest opportunity derived from these meetings is creating an employable workforce in the greater La Porte area.
If you haven't visited our new website, please go to www.laportepartnership.com LEAP partnered with Duneland Media for an upgraded, sharp and user-friendly site to provide our membership with a more interactive experience. Please make sure you are following our weekly activities and like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LaPortePartnership, Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/LEAPartnership, and Instagram at http://www.instagram.com/laportepartnership
Our Workforce Taskforce has been a valuable connector to helping bridge the gap between our workforce, employers and resources to fill every job in the greater La Porte area. Their current initiative involves a survey circulating through our community, stakeholders and employers on Child Care needs in our county. They are gathering valuable data to provide solutions resulting from Child Care obstacles identified in this survey to help improve employee attendance, efficiency and culture.
Lastly, we are asking our members to provide the most current contact information for your company. As we continue to look for ways to improve our processes, we have found that we need to keep up with the changing workforce. We can only disseminate information efficiently if we have the correct contact information in our database. Please take a moment to sign into your ChamberMaster account or email our office your primary, billing and any additional contacts so the right people are receiving correspondence from LEAP.
Sincerely,
Mike Riehle

Fond du Lac County’s Cost of Living Remains Below National Average
FOND DU LAC, WI - The 2019 second quarter Cost of Living Index (COLI) for Fond du Lac County has decreased slightly from first quarter and has remained below the national average. The after-tax cost for a professional/managerial standard of living is 96.0 or 4.0% below the national average of 100.0. Our county continues to be a very affordable place to live, work, and raise a family.
Each quarter, Envision Greater Fond du Lac collects data for COLI which is produced by the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER). The Cost of Living Index measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services for professional and managerial households in the top income bracket. It is based on more than 90,000 prices covering 60 different items in 255 urban areas. The composite index of 96.0 for the Fond du Lac area is based on six different categories: grocery items, housing, utilities, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services.
Five locations in Wisconsin collected cost of living data in the second quarter of 2019 including Eau Claire, Fond du Lac, Green Bay, Madison, and Wisconsin Rapids-Marshfield. The Green Bay area is the least expensive at 90.7 (9.3% below average) with Madison the most expensive in the state at 105.9 or 5.9% above average. Among all the urban areas collecting COLI data, New York (Manhattan), NY is the most expensive place to live at 242.5 (142.5% above average) and Harlingen, TX is the least expensive at 73.8 (26.2% below average).
Why is cost of living information important? A lower cost of living attracts people and businesses. If it costs less to live in Fond du Lac County, in addition to other quality of life benefits, attracting workforce talent and new businesses can be easier. For instance, housing costs in Fond du Lac County have an index of 83.4, or 16.6% less than the national average.
If you’re interested in learning more or want to help gather prices in 2019, please contact Envision Greater Fond du Lac at (920) 921-9500 or info@envisiongreaterfdl.com.
