Ridgeland Chamber Honors Businesses, Volunteers
The City of Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce is committed to showcasing our business community and all the many products and services our businesses have to offer, 2020 Chamber President Chase Bryan of Young Wells Williams, P.A. told a packed house at the Chamber’s annual awards banquet last week after outgoing President Bill Bethany of Community Bank of Mississippi passed the gavel.
“With our 2020 theme Ridgeland . . . Bringing Mississippi Together, we will place renewed emphasis on not only helping our businesses to succeed, but on bringing us all together,” Bryan said.
The Ridgeland Chamber celebrated businesses, volunteers and city leaders at the banquet which honored award winners.
Business entrepreneur Rainey Rives received the 2019 Gene F. McGee Economic Development Award for renovating and remodeling old buildings and changing the look of Highway 51.
Scott Jones of Safe Passage Driving Service was named the 2019 Diplomat of the Year; Linda Carver of Trustmark National Bank received the 2019 Volunteer of the Year Award; the Ridgeland Tourism Commission was the recipient of the 2019 Community Service Award and Green Oak Florist & Garden Center was named 2019 Business of the Year.
Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee named Karen McKie of Green Oak Florist & Garden Center City Maker 2019.
“If our City Maker 2019 had one wish, it would be to beautify every city in the world – one city at a time,” McGee said in presenting McKie with Ridgeland’s highest honor. McGee praised McKie for her role in planting a three-acre field of zinnias and wildflowers along Highway 51 at School Street where the City of Ridgeland is building a new City Center / City Hall complex.
“These beautiful flowers brought hundreds of comments, telephone calls, e-mails and text messages to the City and Chamber, not only from our citizens, but also from visitors,” McGee added. “Zinnia Fields Forever” went on to win Keep Mississippi Beautiful’s 2019 First Place Beautification Award and Keep America Beautiful’s First Place Innovative Partnership Award.”
Award-winning editorial cartoonist, author, inspirational speaker and two-time Pulitzer finalist Marshall Ramsey was the guest speaker at the banquet, sharing his cartoons and telling entertaining stories of his career as a cartoonist. “Mississippi is the best state for politics, storytellers, sweet tea and raising a family”, Ramsey said.
The award-winning Raphael Semmes and the Raphael Semmes Combo provided music for the evening and guests were surprised but thrilled to hear the “National Anthem” sung by international recording artist Guy Hovis, a native Mississippian.

Transportation the Focus of La Crosse Area Chamber meeting
Roads and rail were the subjects of a forum on transportation in Wisconsin Monday.
Among the items discussed was a proposal to add a second Amtrak train from the Twin Cities to Chicago.
The biggest news was that repairs to La Crosse Street are coming.
"It's a shared road if you will. It is technically a state road, but we feel here it is a major artery for the city, and so hearing that those changes are happening soon and in collaboration is really great news for us," said La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vicki Markussen.
Repairs on the street are slated for 2022.
Wisconsin Department of Transportation Secretary Craig Thompson was one of the guest speakers at the forum. See more: WXOW News

Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber map: Town Square Publications: Promises Made, Promises kept!
The Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber of Commerce recently worked with Town Square Publications on the production of a map. Town Square Publications provided all the map design and cartography for the product and sold the sponsorships, so there was no cost to the chamber. The chamber provided local content and photos that showed our organization’s focus on promoting our communities and helping our businesses to thrive. Town Square Publications provided the chamber a proof before going to print. The result was a top quality map. We were especially pleased with the quality of the printing and the paper.
The chamber works hard to identify programs that will be of benefit to our chamber members, such as the 28th Street Metro Cruise program that draws over 200,000 to our area and the annual Santa Parade. The Wyoming-Kentwood chamber map is another great example, and the chamber received the additional benefit of non-dues revenue.
Your company delivered on your promises. We appreciate our partnership with Town Square Publications and will call on them again for the next project.
