The Presidential election has taken
up most of the airwaves, and there hasn’t been a lot of talk about all of the
other races taking place this year. Did you know that 45 of the nation’s 100
largest cities are holding municipal elections? And that over 80% of the
country’s State Legislative seats are up for grabs?
While the Presidential contest is
important and the outcome will play a large role in the future of our nation’s
policy, it’s not the only race on the ballot. We know that some of you may be
turned off from politics – we’ve all seen the mudslinging and infighting on
both sides of the aisle. But it’s important to remember, that even if you
uncertain about voting for the presidential candidates, there are a lot of
other things to consider.
Local and state officials have a
direct impact on your daily life. These positions range from Tax Commissioner
to Sheriff and Judge to State Senator. There are over 13,500 school district
governments. And that’s just the start - there’s a lot happening in your county
and state.
So, Let’s Get Local this
year. We hope you’ll vote for everything on the ticket, but if you don’t want
to, that’s okay. You can vote for all or just a few. But, every vote counts and
makes a difference. To learn more, visit www.illinoisprosperity.org

Aurora Regional Chamber Fall Member Lunch with Lt. Governor Evelyn
Sanguinetti
Join us for our Fall Membership Lunch on Friday, Oct. 21,
featuring Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti. Sanguinetti has been instrumental in the
governor’s initiatives to reform state government, including efforts in
government consolidation and school funding reform.
She is proud to serve the residents of the State of Illinois as
their 47th Lieutenant Governor. She is a wife, working mother of three, and an
attorney by trade. She was formerly an adjunct professor of law and a Wheaton
City Councilwoman.
Sanguinetti was born to teenage parents in Hialeah, a neighborhood
outside of Miami, FL. Her mother was a Cuban refugee and her father, an
Ecuadorian immigrant. She recalls moving frequently as a child because her
parents were unable to afford rent. While they were of little means, her
parents were determined to give her every opportunity to succeed.
Following graduation from Florida International University,
Sanguinetti moved to Chicago to attend The John Marshall Law School where she
developed an understanding and passion for the law and for Illinois. She soon
joined Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan’s office as an Assistant Attorney
General where she fought to protect the people of the State of Illinois.
In 2010, Sanguinetti suffered an accident while walking on Wheaton
city property. Subsequent medical examinations revealed that she has Multiple
Sclerosis. She vowed to never let her MS stop her. She proceeded to run for,
and win, an election to the Wheaton City Council on a platform of delivering efficient,
streamlined government.
As Lt. Governor of Illinois, Sanguinetti is committed to fighting
for all Illinois residents. She applies the same passion to her role that has
propelled her throughout her life, from humble beginnings in Hialeah, FL, to becoming
Illinois’ first Latina Lieutenant Governor. More information: Aurora

BACC Assist: Barrington
220 Looking for Business Coaches for 5th Grade Fresh INC Entrepreneurial
Program
The Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC)
is assisting Barrington 220 recruit business coaches for their Fresh INC
entrepreneurial program again this year. The program will be offered in the
district's 5th grade classrooms for the second year in a row. Many
Chamber members volunteered last year to serve as mentors working with the
fifth-grade teams. If you are interested in helping budding young
entrepreneurs develop their business skills, then we'd love to have you be a
coach. The program will run this year from November 1 - December 22 (just in
time for the holidays!)
This program involves a custom created
curriculum that requires students to develop business plans, product, pricing,
packaging, budgets, sales strategies and more. There will be 29 classrooms
involved from all 8 Barrington 220 elementary schools. Each classroom setting
will form and create approximately 3-4 businesses. The business will
launch their products via a virtual marketplace.
During the process, the 5th grade entrepreneur
program relies heavily on the help of local business mentors to act as Business
Coaches to teams of students, a minimum of 29 Business Coaches are needed.
Each "business coach" will be assigned to a fifth grade
classroom. The coach would be asked to come into the school to assist the
teacher in the development of the classroom businesses. Business coaches could
attend approximately 6 of the classroom lessons. All volunteer coaches/business
mentors will be invited to a 2-hour training session. Once the training
is complete, business coaches will work with their teacher to determine dates
for the classroom lessons.
The Entrepreneur Committee is also looking for
general business speakers who could address 5th graders at any of the
participating schools about "building a business," or other related
topics. These presentations will be flexible with dates and times.
If you are interested in serving as a Fresh
INC Business Coach, please contact Suzanne Corr, BACC President at (847)
331-2525, or email her at suzanne@barringtonchamber.com. Please include
your address and cell phone number. If you are familiar with a particular
school or teacher, please feel free to mention them. If you are
interested in being a potential guest speaker, contact Suzanne by October 1,
2016.

Lincoln- Logan Chamber of Commerce will no
longer do business as Logan County Alliance
The Lincoln-Logan Chamber of Commerce announced this week that
it will no longer do business as the Logan County Alliance.
No official reason was given with the announcement on Monday.
Instead, Chamber President Cathy Wilhite, who was hired to be the President/CEO
of the Logan County Alliance four months ago, opted to share the organization’s
goals going forward.
"Our focus is on building a thriving business community by
being a voice for political advocacy for businesses with state, local and
federal governments, providing business advisory services as a source for
strong leadership development and delivering value to our members by
cultivating strategic relationships to be the leading voice for business in
Lincoln and Logan County," Wilhite said.
In May, the announcement that Wilhite would take the helm at the
Logan County Alliance came amid a local controversy over the organization’s
refusal to submit to an independent, third-party audit of their use of taxpayer
funding, through both the Tourism Bureau and LCA, in 2015 and early-2016. Read

ISU grad student named Galesburg Chamber of Commerce director
Jessica Linder, a graduate student in the Department of Politics
and Government, has been named executive director of the Galesburg Area Chamber
of Commerce.
A senior manager in the Hilton Corp., Linder began her new
position August 10. Building on her training in hospitality leadership from
DePaul University in Chicago, she expects to graduate with a master’s in
political science at Illinois State later this year.
Linder told WGIL that “I’m really excited to start working
with our convention and visitors bureau and with the director over there and
really figure out how we’re supporting the businesses that are in tourism and
make sure they have what they need to grow and start to see that kind of
thrive.”
She noted in the Register-Mail that her diverse educational pursuits
helped her to see a common thread: “As I went through school, I started to
discover more of that intersection of hospitality and business and development
and really saw the full potential of it, how it really is a way to serve
people, to help people to grow communities.” Read more: ISU News
