U.S. Sen. Gary Peters headlines the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber annual Forecast Series

U.S. Sen. Gary Peters headlines a list of distinguished panelists as the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber kicks-off its annual Forecast Series.
Peters, an Oakland County native, won his seat last November, replacing Carl Levin as one of Michigan’s two U. S. senators.  Prior to that, he had served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since being elected in 2008.
“We are thrilled to bring Mr. Peters back to Oakland County to hear firsthand the concerns of the local business community,” said Chamber President Joe Bauman. “Gary has been a good friend to the Chamber for many years, and as a former small business owner himself, he has worked diligently in Washington to represent the interests of the business community first in the House and now the Senate.”
Peters will keynote the Chamber’s Government Forecast, scheduled for 8-9:30 a.m. Monday, March 7, at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham, which will play host to all three breakfast programs.
First up in the three-part, annual Forecast Series is the Chamber’s Economic Forecast, scheduled for 8-9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2. Scheduled speakers are Tony Vernaci, Vice President, Global Business Development for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation; and Paul Traub, Business Economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Detroit Branch. The session will be moderated by real estate attorney Linda Watson of the Clark Hill law firm.

The Series will wrap-up on Tuesday, April 5, with the Real Estate Forecast featuring a keynote address by Dan Elsea, President of Brokerage Services for the Real Estate One Family of Companies. More information: Birmingham-Bloomfield Chamber

MEC's Blake Wilson: Projects work for taxpayers

“If we had some ham, we could have ham and eggs … if we only had some eggs.”
We might have been quoting this old saying if our state leaders hadn’t recently landed two of the more significant economic development projects in our state’s history that will put 3,500 Mississippians to work in new operations in rural Hinds County and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
These projects didn’t just land in Mississippi’s lap — Gov. Phil Bryant and Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Glenn McCullough Jr. had to sell hard and compete hard with other states that also offered incentives, tax breaks and workforce training — just as Mississippi did.
But at the end of the day the people of Mississippi won because our leaders played harder — and played to win.
The trophy is the location of operations from two world-class, internationally-recognized corporations — Continental Tire with 2,500 jobs in Hinds County and Edison Chouest with 1,000 jobs in Harrison County. Mississippians deserve the benefits of more good-paying jobs, a better quality of life and more money flowing into our economy. Read more: Clarion Ledger
The consequences of failing to seize the day on these projects would have been slower growth in Mississippi’s economy, greater success for our competitor states, fewer jobs for us and more for them. Read more: Clarion Ledger

Elkhart County contingent of Indiana General Assembly to speak at Chamber of Commerce gathering

The Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce is hosting a gathering of state lawmakers Friday to get an update of issues being addressed by the Indiana General Assembly.
The Third House Town Hall Meeting goes from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be at the chamber offices, 418 S. Main St.. The public is welcome.
Members of Elkhart County’s legislative contingent to Indianapolis are invited to speak at Third House meetings, though not all of them always attend.

The Indiana Senate earlier took up the thorny issue of whether to add civil protections to state law for the gay and transgender population, ultimately deciding not to take action. A continuing issue of debate is increasing funding for road and other infrastructure improvements across the state, with two competing proposals, one that entails tax increases and another that doesn’t. Danville-Boyle EDP named one of America’s leading economic development corporations
The Danville-Boyle County Economic Development Partnership was named one of America’s leading economic development corporations by Global Trade Magazine.
The California-based Global Trade is a media brand focused on domestic and global expansion processes, logistics efficiencies, strategic location, information technology and intelligent banking solutions for U.S. manufacturers that export and their logistics partners.
In its February print edition, the company highlighted 18 economic development organizations and their accomplishments, and the Danville-Boyle County EDP was selected for its unique model, which proves there is “strength in numbers.”

“What a nice compliment this recognition is to the vision of those in our community who created the EDP and to the good work of the professional staff who make the partnership such an effective organization for economic development in Boyle County,” said EDP Board of Directors Chairman Richard Trollinger.
The EDP is an alliance of the Boyle County Industrial Foundation, Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce, Danville-Boyle County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Heart of Danville Main Street Program, Main Street Perryville, and the local governments of Boyle County, and cities of Danville, Junction City, and Perryville.
The EDP was organized in 2006 from the former Danville-Boyle County Community Development Council.
“An alliance between nine local organizations, the EDP unifies Boyle County, Kentucky’s economic development efforts,” the magazine states. “It’s a unique model, but EDP members say the alliance proves that there’s strength in numbers. One of the EDP’s recent successes involved three member organizations working together to help the Danville-based Wilderness Trail Distillery (WTD) find a new production site. At first, the WTD mulled moving to another county, but the EDP showed the distillery how investing $5.6 million in a local venue would be good for business.” Read more: KY Forward
