Up to 10 minority entrepreneurs will be chosen to participate in Elevate Minority Business, a new program aimed at accelerating the growth and development of established minority-owned businesses in West Michigan.

The deadline to apply for the inaugural class is Friday, Feb. 5, according to a news release by the program's sponsor, the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce

The Chamber of Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg to present 2016 economic forecast on Jan. 28

Wondering what the future holds for the economy of Northwest Ottawa County?

The local Chamber of Commerce will host an event on Thursday, Jan. 28, that’ll gaze into that crystal ball to find the answer.
The 2016 Economic Forecast for Northwest Ottawa County breakfast will take place at the Grand Haven Community Center from 7:30-9:30 a.m. It will provide a business outlook of West Michigan’s economic conditions and regional performance.
“It’s an annual event that we do,” Chamber of Commerce President Joy Gaasch said.
The event features George Erickcek from the W.E. Upjohn Institute. Gaasch said Erickcek has a vast knowledge and experience in conducting economic impact studies and has prepared employment forecasts annually for each of the West Michigan region’s six metropolitan areas.
“We’re really excited that George is coming back to deliver the economic forecast for us,” Gaasch said. “We’ve been having George here probably since the early 2000s.”
Gaasch noted that she’s particularly interested to hear what the presentation entails this year because of recent changes over the past several years to the area’s metropolitan statistical area.
“Up until recently, we were a part of the Holland-Grand Haven MSA,” she said. “That changed to a much larger MSA.” Read more: Grand Haven Tribune

Traverse Area Chamber of Commerce 2016 Annual Celebration

A big year for a big Northern Michigan town and only one night to sum it all up.
Local businesses, organizations and lawmakers came together at Friday night's Traverse Area Chamber of Commerce 2016 Annual Celebration.
Chamber Executive Director, Laura Oblinger, says, “The chamber has always found it important to take that time to recognize the successes of the past year and look forward to the next.”
But this event is not just a celebration, it's an opportunity.
Oblinger says, “Tonight's a perfect example of building relevant connections with other business people that will help grow your business through those connections.”
CEO of Chateau Chantal Winery, Marie-Chantal Dalese says, “For someone that has a business somewhat outside of downtown Traverse City, it really gives me a chance to meet a lot of other business owners to gain some guidance in perspective and learn from those other business leaders.”
Regardless the size of the business, everyone in the room shares the same goal for the new year.
Communications Director of Team Elmer’s, Tonya Wildfong, says, “As a community big or small, we all have the same interests; trying to help, trying to strengthen each others' business and trying to grow Traverse City as a community.”

Chamber Executive Ongoing Education Weekly New Idea: Get Out of Your Own Way  by Robert Cooper

A Powerful Road Map for Surpassing Everyone’s Expectations

Break through your self-imposed limitations by learning how your own brain can be your biggest obstacle—or your greatest ally.

You’d expect your brain to be an always-reliable ally in your quest for a successful, satisfying life, but surprisingly the opposite is usually true. That’s because your brain is pretty much the same model your ancestors were using thousands of years ago when mere survival was everyone’s primary goal. It tells you now what it told them then: Play it safe. Avoid risk. Evade confrontation. Don’t venture outside the territory you already know. And never break the habits that have gotten you this far.

Coming at just the right time to help you deal with the growing demands of our pressure-packed, fast-changing world, Robert Cooper’s Get Out of Your Own Way helps you understand what’s going on in that head of yours. Once you know what really drives you, you can switch off the counterproductive parts of your brain, engage the helpful parts, and set out on the path to accomplishing what everyone else thinks you can’t. Based on more than two decades of worldwide research, Get Out of Your Own Way shows you the five keys for making the choices that let you engage and triumph over the realities of today’s world:

• Direction, not motion
• Focus, not time
• Capacity, not conformity
• Energy, not effort
• Impact, not intentions

Filled with wonderful stories—about everything from the note written by one of the author’s ancestors upon leaving Dublin for America in 1829 (“On the horizon is where hope lives . . . I am going there”) to the unlikely exploits of the world record–setting Jamaican bobsled team—this groundbreaking book confirms that the next frontier is not only ahead of you, it’s inside of you . . . and what everyone else thinks is impossible isn’t. Lansing employs 20 percent of state's insurance industry

Michigan’s insurance industry had a $37.1 billion economic footprint in 2014, according to a new report on the industry.
The industry spent $16.4 billion in the state that year, including $3 billion in wages to its more than 41,000 direct employees, and supports a total of 114,000 jobs in the state, the report said. It paid $500 million in taxes to the state and local governments.
The report, paid for by several business organizations and insurance advocacy groups, including the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Lansing Economic Area Partnership, was released Monday at the chamber's downtown offices.
Conducted by the Anderson Economic Group, the study measured the economic footprint of the sector including both direct spending and taxes paid to the state and the indirect effect of insurance companies' economic activity.
“This industry is a huge part of the local economy and state economy,” said Bob Trezise, president and CEO of LEAP. “This report helps shape the understanding of the insurance industry and shifts its image.”
Lansing’s insurance industry accounts for nearly 20 percent of the sector’s workforce in the state, employing roughly 7,300 people of the total 41,000 direct jobs, the report said.  Together with the local financial industry, which is in the same sector, there are nearly 10,000 employees in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties
Lansing is expected to pass the 10,000-worker milestone this year as Jackson National Life Insurance Co. adds 350 employees to keep up with its growing customer base. Jackson National employs 2,600 people locally. This fall, it opened a $60 million expansion to its Alaeidon Township headquarters to house 800 information technology and legal associates. The new building was part of a $100 million investment by the company to expand and update its facilities. Read more: Lansing State Journal

Chamber Note from Rex Richards, President, Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce:
December 18, 2015
John, I want to thank you for an outstanding map which you produced for our Valpo Chamber.
In my 43 years as a CEO in the chamber field, it was the smoothest project I have ever seen done. You made all the deadlines, your print quality and cartography were second to none. And of course you paid us in exactly the time frame you said you would so we could count the Royalty Check towards our current year revenues.
Life is very good when dealing with Town Square Publications.
You have the right of first refusal on our next map. You are a great partner for our chamber, We are living proof that a printed map is still very much in demand by both advertisers and consumers.
It would be my pleasure to recommend Town Square Publications as a firm Chambers and Tourism Bureaus should use when considering a printed map or other print publication.
Sincerely,
Rex G. Richards CCE
President, Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce

Chamber interest: Pearl Mist cruise ship may dock in Muskegon/Holland in 2016

The Pearl Mist cruise ship has visited Holland for two summers, but its third summer might involve a reduced number of stops, or none at all.
The Pearl Seas Cruises company recently posted the stops for its two Great Lakes cruises, listing Muskegon/Holland as one stop.
Muskegon is working to market itself as the port of West Michigan, and a tourism destination, said Cindy Larsen, president of Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce.
In September 2015, Muskegon’s Mart Dock hosted the Pearl Mist when their was a conflict at Verplank Dock Co., it’s planned port in Holland.
When that occurred, some passengers remained in Muskegon for the day, while others bused to Holland.
“Now that downtown (Muskegon) is put back together, it’s a good time to welcome the cruise ships,” Larsen said. “As we were starting to prep our port for increased vessels — industrial and tourism — it just happened that the Pearl Mist needed a safe harbor last summer, and it was like serendipity.” Read more: Holland Sentinel
