The Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce will host its prestigious Chamber Choice Awards & Expo on Friday, March 11, 2016 from 11 am – 2 pm, at the Henry, an Autograph Collection Hotel in Dearborn.  This awards event, presented by Ford Land, combines effective networking and business appreciation by honoring 3 outstanding individuals and businesses, recognizing over 100 organizations celebrating milestone anniversaries, and featuring an expo showcasing over 40 Metro Detroit area businesses.

The Chamber is thrilled to honor Neumann/Smith Architecture as Business of the Year. Brett Vassey and Barry DuVal: International trade is Virginia’s best economic development opportunity

The call to diversify Virginia’s economy away from a reliance on federal spending is not new, but it has grown louder in recent years. Virginia was cushioned from the worst of the recession in a large part because of federal and defense spending, but with sequestration, we have seen the other side of that coin. Our growth rate in terms of job creation and GDP has been stagnant, and is expected to continue to lag behind the national average in the near future. Some regions of the commonwealth have yet to recover all of the jobs lost in the recession.
A bright spot, however, can be found in international trade. Virginia’s economy has become increasingly export-oriented. According to the Brookings Institution Export Monitor, export share of the Virginia economy has increased from 5.6 percent to 7.8 percent over the past 10 years. Since the recession, exports have driven nearly 30 percent of Virginia’s economic growth. That growth has occurred statewide, with the greatest export share of GDP occurring in Southwest Virginia, Harrisonburg, Blacksburg and Staunton.
We have a uniquely valuable asset in the Port of Virginia, which is the only port on the East Coast that exports more container volume than it receives. International exports from Virginia totaled $36 billion in 2014, sustaining 321,000 jobs and delivering $2 billion in state and local taxes. Exports support good-paying jobs with an average annual income above the state average at $58,000.

The anticipated expansion of the Panama Canal and the prospect of new international trade agreements opening up new markets for Virginia goods and services make it all the more possible for Virginia to capitalize upon its existing infrastructure and resourceful business community to lead an economic expansion through international trade. Chamber issue: IndyGo: Reliable Transit is 'Baseline Expectation'

The vice president of government relations with the Indy Chamber says the organization is very supportive of changes IndyGo is proposing to expand public transportation throughout the state's largest regional economy. Mark Fisher, who also serves on the board of the public transportation corporation, says the IndyGo Forward plan will boost the reach and access of the service and make it more convenient for the "people that make our city run." Public input sessions will begin Friday and run through the rest of the month.
He says a solid mass transportation system helps with talent attraction, as well as supports the existing work force. "Certainly, the Millennial generation is looking for more livable, walkable communities. They want to be able to live in a city and not necessarily have a car or maybe if they're in a dual-income household, maybe only have one car, so they're looking for some options, Fishers tells Inside INdiana Business. "It really is a baseline for Millennials as they're comparing cities." He believes a strong system is an expectation for the generation that has become the largest group in the work force. "It's not something that they are looking to go to a city and help build one up." Read more: Inside Indiana Business

Mississippi good news: South Carolina praises Continental

South Carolina officials say Mississippi is getting a great corporate partner in Continental AG.
The German-based tire company announced Tuesday that it will be investing $1.45 billion in Mississippi as well as creating 2,500 jobs.
Formerly known as Continental General Tire, Continental Tire the Americas LLC is based in Fort Mill, South Carolina. It is a subsidiary of Continental AG.  It is the world's fourth-largest tire manufacturer, with locations in Mount Vernon, Illinois, and Sumter, South Carolina.
Continental moved its North American headquarters to South Carolina in 2014. Ted Pitts, president and CEO of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, said Continental has made it a point to be a great business partner for the state as well as a community partner in Sumter.
"Continental here in South Carolina has come in and been a great corporate partner, a corporate citizen if you will, for the entire state but especially to the Sumter community," Pitts told The Clarion-Ledger by phone this week. Read more: Clarion Ledger

The Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce celebrated a "successful 2015" by 'betting' on business

The Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce celebrated a “successful 2015” Friday at the Danville Country Club by “betting on business” and recognizing outstanding community leaders.

With a theme of “Betting on Business: Deal Me In,” the yearly event is an opportunity to bring the community together.

“Tonight is really a celebration of our community and the wonderful things so many have done,” said Paula Fowler, executive director of the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce. “It’s just a fun way of getting members of our business community together.”

Following a banquet-style dinner, the awards were presented to several “outstanding” individuals and businesses.

The School Bell Award is presented annually to a lay person chosen by their school districts who has done considerable work for the school system as a volunteer. This year’s recipients are Rachalle Brandt of the Boyle County School System, Lucy Minichillo of the Danville Independent School System and Clyde Mohan of Kentucky School for the Deaf.

The Ambassador of the Year came from a core group of “recruitment and mentoring” Chamber volunteers. Emily Toadvine received the award for her “dedication, hard work and dependability.” Read more: Advocate-Messenger
