Happy Monday #Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT week!
Pat Convery Named Howell Chamber's 2017 Citizen Of The Year
Pat Convery, a longtime member of the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce, has been named the organization’s 2017 Citizen of the Year.
2016’s recipient, Patti Griffith, presented the award to Convery at the Chamber’s 61st annual Citizen of the Year dinner on Thursday. The event was held at Cleary University in Genoa Township. Cleary’s Johnson Center was full of community members and leaders, many of whom have met, interacted, or worked with Convery through her numerous roles.
Convery has been with the chamber for 28 years and has held leadership positions in a number of local organizations. The Hartland resident is the only chamber professional to receive the Michigan Chamber Professional Award twice since its inception. Still, she remains humble, saying it is a tremendous honor to serve with people of such a high caliber.
Convery says she was shocked when she realized she had been chosen as Citizen of the Year, adding that she attended a “sham meeting” held by past recipients who fooled her into thinking someone else had been chosen. Griffith began the presentation with a slideshow of clues as to who the 2017 winner might be. Convery says she noticed she had a lot in common with the recipient based on those clues. Once she figured it out, she started to cry. Convery feels Livingston County is a passionate community filled with people who work hard to make it so and says it’s an honor to even be considered as Citizen of the Year.
A number of awards were also handed out prior to the citizen announcement, including investment and prosperity awards to Adam Merkel Restaurants, Chem-Trend Limited Partnership, Thai Summit America Corporation, and TG Fluid Systems.
Rick Resinger and Brandi Tambasco were recognized for their leadership and professionalism.
The Howell Police Department, Livingston Educational Service Agency, and the Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority were also awarded for their community impact. Read more: WHMI 93.5

The Valpo Chamber Envision the Future Committee is planning the 2017 event for Porter County
eight-grade students. This annual program is scheduled for March 14, 2017, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
at the Porter County Expo Center.
Business Volunteers are extremely important to this program. Volunteers will assist students as they learn
how to live within their means while enjoying their chosen career. Envision the Future is an opportunity
for students to realize exactly how much money it will take to pay for housing, utilities, a vehicle, insurance,
food, clothing, and childcare; while trying to have enough money leftover for the “extras” in life.
Why should you volunteer? What’s in it for you?
- Area 8th graders are the future pool of employees and consumers. The better
choices they make for their education, the better the employment pool becomes
for the local business community.
- Networking opportunities with several business volunteers in attendance.
- Envision the Future is a great way to impact over 1,000 students in a short
period of time.
Please register for a station of your choice.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Kurt at kurt@valpochamber.org or 219-462-1106.

The 91st annual dinner is scheduled to take place Tuesday, Feb. 27. Details for the gathering have not yet been announced, but chamber officials expect that information to be available soon.
Walker was elected governor in 2010 on a pro-business agenda, and was re-elected to a second term in 2014. He is running for a third term as governor in the November 2018 election.
The annual dinner is a highlight of the Greater Beloit business social calendar, and customarily attracts several hundred attendees. In addition to the keynote speaker, the dinner event includes a number of prestigious award recognitions for businesses and individuals. Read more: Beloit Daily News
Town Square Publications: Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber map: Promises Made, Promises kept!
The Wyoming-Kentwood Chamber of Commerce recently worked with Town Square Publications on the production of a map. Town Square Publications provided all the map design and cartography for the product and sold the sponsorships, so there was no cost to the chamber. The chamber provided local content and photos that showed our organization’s focus on promoting our communities and helping our businesses to thrive. Town Square Publications provided the chamber a proof before going to print. The result was a top quality map. We were especially pleased with the quality of the printing and the paper.
The chamber works hard to identify programs that will be of benefit to our chamber members, such as the 28th Street Metro Cruise program that draws over 200,000 to our area and the annual Santa Parade. The Wyoming-Kentwood chamber map is another great example, and the chamber received the additional benefit of non-dues revenue.
Your company delivered on your promises. We appreciate our partnership with Town Square Publications and will call on them again for the next project.

Wyoming-Kentwood ChamberBowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce announces 2018 Chamber Awards
Today the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce announced four awards recognizing outstanding volunteer service in the community this past year.
“Each year, the level of success our organization achieves would not be possible without the loyalty and service from our dedicated volunteers,” said Board Chairman Joy Hunt. “These volunteers consistently go beyond their normal duties to support the Chamber and give back to the community. We’re extremely fortunate to have such a loyal volunteer base, and we thank each volunteer for his and her hard work and commitment.”
Ambassador of the Year
Now in its 31st year, the Chamber’s Ambassadors Club is a group of volunteers that dedicates countless hours to the Chamber. Ambassadors assist in recruitment efforts, mentor new partners and extend goodwill throughout the community. Collectively they spend more than 4,000 hours annually giving back to this organization. Each year, the Ambassadors nominate a fellow Ambassador who has done an outstanding job for the Chamber. The club chose Jana Sublett of CASA of South Central Kentucky as 2017 Ambassador of the Year. Jana served as 2017 Ambassador Chair.
Board Volunteer of the Year
The Chamber’s Board of Directors serves as the governing body of the Chamber, and these volunteer leaders provide guidance for the Chamber’s strategic initiatives. They spend numerous hours at the Chamber and at Chamber events. Each year, the Chamber selects a Board of Directors member who has gone above and beyond the regular duties as a Board member. The Chamber selected Chris Thorn of Graves Gilbert Clinic 2017 Board Volunteer of the Year. Chris was elected to the chamber board’s executive committee in 2017. Chris’ support of the Chamber’s programs and his encouragement to volunteers and appreciation of the Chamber team is worthy to be awarded.
Volunteer of the Year
On a daily basis, hundreds of volunteers ensure Chamber programs, events and initiatives are successful. Each year, the Chamber presents an award to the year’s most outstanding volunteer as a thank you for his or her dedication and commitment. This year, the Chamber recognized Bryan Thompson of Henkel for his outstanding service. Bryan’s participation in multiple aspects of the Chamber’s SCK Launch talent initiative, including the Experience on November 16 which provided nearly 3,000 8th graders a hands-on career experience and Teacher Externships hosting educators on-site for curriculum-workplace relevance interaction.
BGYP Young Professional of the Year
Bowling Green Young Professionals is a Chamber initiative with the mission to attract, retain and connect young talent in our community; to engage and empower our next generation of business and community leaders to actively shape the Bowling Green area. In its second year, the award recognizes an outstanding BGYP member for his or her dedication and service to the organization. The organization chose Nick Newbould of Core Tech, LLC as the BGYP Young Professional of the Year. Nick serves on BGYP Leadership Council is the current Chair-elect for BGYP.
Incorporated in 1935, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce is a 5-Star Accredited Chamber by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and was named the 2009 Chamber of the Year by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives. As the fourth largest chamber in Kentucky, the Chamber serves as a premier business advocate for its more than 1,300 partners and is the driving force for economic development in South Central Kentucky. Arlington Chamber: 2018 Will Be The Best Year For YEA! Yet
...And we want you to be part of it!
If you haven't heard by now, the Chamber's Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program is making a serious impact on Arlington. YEA! is a groundbreaking program that transforms middle and high school students into owners and operators of their very own, fully-formed business. Since starting the program three years ago, we've graduated 44 students who have launched 26 businesses, had one of our students named one of the top six young entrepreneurs in the country, and created major buzz with the media.
And this year, we're taking this program even farther. We're excited to include you in this exciting, rapidly growing program and want to share with you some ways you can get involved.
Mentor a Student
Business mentors make a huge impact on the lives of budding entrepreneurs by providing real world guidance and encouragement, as students evaluate risks and opportunities in the business world. As a mentor, you'll meet one-on-one with your student for 90 minutes once a week for six weeks at Marymount University. During these meetings, you'll assist students with finalizing their business plans, help enhance the students' ideas through innovative thinking, and coach students to a perfect pitch presentation.
The first mentor visit will be held this Wednesday, February 7 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The full schedule of mentor visits can be found here.
Madison the City Chamber of Commerce Names St. Catherine's Village Large Business of the Year
In January, Madison the City Chamber of Commerce named St. CatherineĆ¢€™s Village the cityĆ¢€™s Large Business of the Year for 2017.
Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler presented the award to Mary Margaret Judy, executive director; Felichia Fields, assistant executive director; and Scott Kersh, chief financial officer at St. Catherine's Village. The continuing care retirement community (CCRC) offers unparalleled facilities, beautiful outdoor spaces, a thoughtful staff, resident-centered care, and a mission-focused environment.
St. Catherine's Village truly embodies what Madison has achieved as a certified retirement community, said Mary Margaret Judy. We are honored that the chamber appreciates the value we bring to the city.
“St. Catherine's Village truly embodies what Madison has achieved as a certified retirement community,” said Mary Margaret Judy, Executive Director at St. Catherine's Village
To qualify as a certified retirement city, Madison passed a three-month intensive screening process conducted by Hometown Mississippi Retirement, the state's official retiree attraction program. The city was evaluated on several criteria important to retirees: cost of living, tax rate, low crime, quality medical care, recreation, educational and cultural opportunities, and most importantly, a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Madison, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017, also has been awarded the seal of approval by the American Association of Retirement Communities and is nationally ranked as one of the best retirement locations in the country. Both the chamber of commerce and the city actively promote Madison as a retirement haven. Read more: The Daily Telescope
