Augusta Chamber joins Front Royal-Warren County Chamber, Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Chamber, Top of Virginia Regional, Shenandoah Valley partners for I-81 coalition of chambers
The Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce has partnered with several other Virginia chambers to form an Improve I-81 Chamber Coalition.
Joining the Augusta Chamber in the coalition are the Front Royal-Warren County Chamber of Commerce, Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce, Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce and the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber.
The coalition was formed to help achieve needed improvements to the congested interstate.
In addition to accidents, the interstate has truck traffic above its capacity, now accounting for more than 40 percent of Virginia's truck traffic.
The coalition has written Virginia U.S. Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, 6th District Rep. Bob Goodlatte, 9th District Rep. Morgan Griffith and 10th District Rep. Barbara Comstock for their assistance in getting federal funds for I-81 improvements.
In the letter, the coalition asks the congressional members to "appeal to the current administration and work collaboratively to secure funding solutions that will address this significant need." Read more: Daily Progress


New Danville-Pittsylvania County chamber leader has ‘genuine passion for our region’

Alexis Ehrhardt’s mother instilled in her the importance of education, public service and making a difference in her community.
“She was someone who valued inclusion and equity over just about everything else,” Ehrhardt, a Rockville, Maryland, native, said during an interview at her office at Averett University on Thursday morning. “She used to take me to marches in [Washington] D.C. and strap a billboard on me.”
On Jan. 2, Ehrhardt, 39, will apply what she has learned from her late mother and throughout her career on a region-wide scale when she becomes the new president and CEO of the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce.
Ehrhardt, the executive director of Averett’s Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness, was announced as the chamber’s new director Dec. 6.
“Alexis has such a genuine passion for our region,” Chamber Board President Bert Eades said in the written announcement to chamber members. “The combination of this passion and her proven track record of organizational leadership impressed everyone on the search committee.”
Ehrhardt, current president of Riverview Rotary, holds a bachelor’s degree in Latin American and Caribbean studies and Spanish — with a minor in history — from Emory University, a master’s degree in higher education from the University of Virginia and a doctorate in leadership studies from Lynchburg College.
“My parents believed in serving your community and in educational excellence,” she said.
Ehrhardt will replace Laurie Moran, who died of cancer in June at 56. Moran was president and CEO of the chamber since 2002. Betty Jo Foster has served as interim president since Moran’s death. Read more: GoDanRiver.com

Chamber breakfast: Loudoun supervisors address business community on top issues


With the start of a new year, Loudoun faces several challenges, but with every challenge, there is also progress, three Loudoun supervisors told the county business community at a Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Thursday.

Chairwoman Phyllis Randall (D-At Large), Vice Chairman Ralph Buona (R-Ashburn) and Supervisor Geary Higgins (R-Catoctin) spoke on several topics, including a strained transportation system, the arrival of Metro, the Envision Loudoun Comprehensive Plan process, a housing shortage and growing costs and budgets.

Randall noted the Envision Loudoun process, compensation and class study and Metro capital funding as challenges the board is facing.

Higgins said that while he was one of the members from the past board who voted against bringing Metro to Loudoun, he is optimistic that the county will find solutions to the financial and safety challenges facing the mass transit system.

Buona said the Metro is on schedule for testing and Loudoun residents should see services to Ashburn in 2020. Of the three parking garages Loudoun has pledged to build, one is almost done and the other two are going through the design process and will be done by May 2019.

The tax district revenue is on target with the 2011 projections and land value around the Metro stations has increased, Buona also said. Read more: Loudoun Times

WWII Vets, Local Military Leadership to Join Prince William Chamber Members for Lunch

On Tuesday, Jan. 23, the Prince William Chamber of Commerce will host their seventh Annual Salute to the Armed Forces Luncheon from 1100 to 1400 hours (that’s 11:00 a. m.-2:00 p. m. for the civilian) at the Clubs at Quantico and Crossroads Event Center. The event is presented by the Chamber’s Veterans Council and features annual updates and award presentations by the Base Commander at Marine Corps Base Quantico and Garrison Commander at Fort Belvoir. Former Miss USA and active U.S. Army Reservist Deshauna Barber is the 2018 Keynote Speaker. NOVEC-Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative is the Event Sponsor.

The event will featuring moving accounts of local personal and professional connections to our nation’s military along with recognition for outstanding young Soldiers and Marines. The Chamber is also expecting several World War II Veterans as special guests.

Keynote Speaker Deshauna Barber will share her thoughts on the importance of hiring military veterans and increasing efforts to help service men and women to effectively transition to civilian life, particularly post-deployment.


This year’s Salute to the Armed Forces will conclude with a Fallen Comrade Ceremony, including the playing of “TAPS” in honor of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Deshauna Barber made headlines and history as the first woman actively serving in the United States military to win the title of Miss USA. Deshauna comes from a service-centric family. Both her father and mother, as well as her older brother and sister, have all served in the military. She knows firsthand the sacrifices made by our country’s servicemen and women.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Virginia State University, Deshauna went on to complete her Masters in Computer Information Systems at the University of Maryland. Following her studies Deshauna returned to D.C. as an IT Analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce. In 2011, she commissioned as a Quartermaster Officer in the U.S. Army Reserve and is currently a Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit at Rockville, Maryland.

As Miss USA, Deshauna specifically focused her efforts on PTSD treatment for soldiers returning from deployments and suicide prevention in the Armed Forces. Read more: Prince William Living

Tysons Chamber installs 2018 board, plans new events

The Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce enjoyed a successful 2017, gaining 60 new members, and will add some new events in the year ahead.
“It was a pivotal year for the chamber,” said 2018 board chairman Virginia Case at a Jan. 5 breakfast meeting at the Tower Club in Tysons.
Case began her remarks by noting she had been an avid musician as a child, even playing violin at Carnegie Hall at age 6, but discovered after one semester in college that she wanted to pursue a different path.
Case was working for a small business in Tysons when she joined the chamber and soon began meeting, befriending and learning from other professionals through the organization.
“It was through the chamber that I gained confidence in my own abilities,” said Case, who founded her own agency in 2017. Her goal is to make the chamber an organization that enables people to make the leap she did and start their own businesses.
The chamber this year will retire some previous events, such as a 5-kilometer race, and replace them with new activities and networking opportunities, Case said. These will include an interactive restaurant month in April, an awards gala and non-profit showcase in June, a distillery event in September and a live-music event in December, she said.
U.S. Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-11th) swore in the 2018 board and noted that a certificate he’d submitted for the Congressional Record regarding the board’s new members had passed unanimously.

Accreditation Self-Analysis Survey for Local Chambers of Commerce

Please use the following checklist to determine if you're ready to apply for accreditation.

Governance

1. Does the chamber have an article of incorporation or a charter?

2. Is the chamber's mission statement clear and feasible?

3. Bylaws:

o Do they regulate the main areas of chamber management;

o Are they considered to be adequate for the laws of the state to the protection of both the chamber and its members; and

o Have they been shared with the board?

4. Organizational Structure: Is it clear and appropriate to the chamber's size and goals? Has the chamber developed an organization chart depicting flow of information and hierarchy?

5. Are there appropriate term limits and job descriptions in place for the board of directors?

6. Are board meetings held on a regular basis and are minutes kept on file?

7. Does a review process exist to evaluate the performance of officers and directors?

8. Are the proper committees in place for the chamber to meet goals?

Finance

1. Does the chamber meet generally accepted accounting practices? (GAAP)

2. Are the chamber's financial policies and procedures documented in a manual?

3. Is an annual operational budget in place (including costs for all programs, management and fundraising) and is it approved by the board?

4. Does the board of directors review and approve all financial statements?

5. Does the chamber maintain current financial statements?

5. Can the chamber communicate with members using mass-distribution e-mails?

6. Does the chamber comply with federal CAN-SPAM requirements?

Facilities

1. Does the chamber's facility project an appropriate business image, and is the facility accessible by the public?

Arlington Chamber Celebrates 94th Annual Arlington Business Gala

Sold-out event raises revenue to support Chamber's work to empower Arlington's business community

The Arlington Chamber of Commerce hosted its 94th Annual Arlington Business Gala on Saturday, January 27 at The Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City. The sold-out gala, hosted by 2018 Chamber Chair Lindsey Rheaume of EagleBank, was the Chamber's first major event of 2018 and entertained 350 guests, including members of the Virginia General Assembly, all five members of the Arlington County Board, and business leaders from across the area.

"This year's Arlington Business Gala was an outstanding success," said Chamber President & CEO Kate Bates. "A fun-filled evening was had by all who attended, and the revenue earned through this event will help our Chamber continue our important work to empower Arlington's business community. We appreciate all who helped make this event possible, and we look forward to continuing this energy through the rest of 2018."

Attendees enjoyed a three-course dinner, mingling with fellow Arlington business leaders, dancing to music by the Bachelor Boys Band, and participating in the silent and live auctions. The silent auction featured items varying from all-inclusive tropical vacations and autographed sports memorabilia to fine wines, tickets to experiences around town, and more. During the live auction, attendees bid on high-demand items like an autographed Washington Capitals jersey and tickets, an oil painting by award-winning artist William Woodward, a catered dinner for 50 guests, and a round of golf at the Army Navy Country Club. Guests also had the opportunity to win four hours of limousine service and enter a raffle drawing to win accommodations for two people at the St. James Club Morgan Bay in Saint Lucia.

VIPs in attendance included Senator Delegate Barbara Favola (D-Arlington); Delegate Patrick Hope (D-47); Arlington County Board Chair Katie Cristol, Vice-Chair Christian Dorsey, and members Libby Garvey, Erik Gutshall, and John Vihstadt; Clerk of the Circuit Court Paul Ferguson; Commissioner of Revenue Ingrid Morroy; and Sheriff Beth Arthur.
