Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce has new president
There is a new president at the helm of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce.
Michael Gordon, founder of Moiseev-Gordon Architects in Royal Oak, was elected to the job by the Chamber’s board of directors and began his term this month.
A member of the board since 2010, Gordon will be president of the Chamber for just one year instead of the typical term of two years, said Shelly Kemp, executive director of the Chamber.
“Members of the board can’t stay on the board for more than three terms of three years, so (Gordon) only has a year left,” she said. “This is his last year.’
Gordon replaces former President Jason Gittinger, owner of the Detroit School of Pop and Rock Musicin Royal Oak, who just completed his two-year term.
“I’m really excited to have Michael as president,” Kemp said. “I have had experience with him when he was president of the St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit where I am a member and he was phenomenal.”
The non-profit St. Andrew’s Society is the oldest benevolent society statewide and Gordon was its president for six years.
Gordon said in statement that he has worked in Royal Oak for more than 27 years.
“I have ... seen a lot of comings and goings during that time,” he said. “With the recent construction and arrival of more corporate entities, the Chamber now has a unique chance to create more opportunities that engage millennials and younger professionals.”
But Gordon said that the Chamber serves more than just the downtown district businesses, which has been the site of much of the new business development.
“It’s important to survey the entire city, reaching up the Woodward corridor to the many businesses in northern Royal Oak as well,” he said.
A member of state and national home builders associations, Gordon has received recognized for distinguished service in architecture and remodeling by the Building Industry Association. Read more: Daily Tribune

Quad Cities Chamber plans to choose a new CEO in March

The Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce search committee will interview three CEO candidates over the next couple months, and hopes to name a new chief executive in the spring.
Since September, it's been working with Waverly Partners LLC, a national executive-search firm, to find a new CEO to lead the organization. Tara Barney resigned as chief executive officer last July, saying she wanted to pass the torch to new leadership.
Kristin Glass, vice president for member services, has been serving as interim CEO.
With Ms. Glass “doing such a phenomenal job for us, we don't feel the need to rush,” said chamber board chairman Pat Eikenberry, who's on the nine-member search committee. “I'm extraordinarily pleased with the job Kristin has done for us.”
He said Waverly reached out to 750 economic-development professionals and chamber executives nationwide to start the search process. About 40 applied for the chamber position, and nine candidates were recommended to the search committee for consideration, Mr. Eikenberry said.
“We're ecstatic about who they brought us,” he said, adding that the committee has interviewed those nine candidates in person, picked three finalists and hopes to make a final pick in March
Mr. Eikenberry said the search committee represents a good cross-section of both sides of the river.
In addition to Mr. Eikenberry, of IMEG, committee members are Brian Duffy, Per Mar Security; Cathy Edwards, Edwards Creative; Mara Downing, Deere & Co.; Joe Slavens, Northwest Bank & Trust; Ken Koupal, US Bank; LaDrina Wilson, Scott Community College; Pryce Boeye, Hungry Hobo, and Randy Moore, Iowa American Water Co.
Debbie Galbraith of Waverly Partners referred all questions to the chamber.
Compared with September 2010, when the Illinois and Iowa Quad-Cities chambers merged with more than 2,000 members, there are currently 1,800 members and a staff of 30.
"Businesses have gone through challenging times, and need to consider what their investments look like," Ms. Glass said. "We expected a fall-off" after the 2008-09 recession, she said.
"We're less focused on the number of members and more on how they're served, the quality of member services."
"We do tout the number of business members, but also the number of employees they represent," which is 94,000, Ms. Glass said. "We're focused on our relationship with businesses, making sure we understand their needs."
The chamber also is seeking a new vice president for finance. To see a job  description, visit member.quadcitieschamber.com/jobs/info/accounting-vice-president-finance. Read more: QC Online

Southaven Chamber Event: Henley helps solve tax questions

Mark Henley took some time away from a career helping deliver goods and products to determine his next course in life. When he was ready to jump back into a career, Henley discovered the next turn in his professional life’s journey would be help deliver to people answers to their “taxing” questions.
Today, Henley oversees the area offices of H&R Block out of the tax preparation service’s location of 975 Goodman Road East, in the Southaven Commons center.
“My area runs down to Clarksdale, Batesville, Water Valley, Oxford, Holly Springs and Byhalia,” Henley said. “I have all of the nine counties of North Mississippi, along with Collierville, a few offices in Memphis and then Crittenden County, Ark.”
Henley’s move into the tax preparation world came after he stepped away from another career to spend time with his son.
“I spent many years with FedEx, but I took a year off to reassess and determine what would be right for me,” said Henley. “I was a single father with a teenage son who had a rare heart condition and required some heart surgery that made me stop and reevaluate everything. Not knowing what the long term was going to be, I took a year off, he and I did some traveling together and we decided to relocate back to the Memphis area, where we were from originally.”
Henley’s move into H&R Block has been a good one for him, with Henley adding he is especially impressed with the people he works with.
“I’ve never worked with this many people who are genuinely worried, concerned and who care for their customers,” Henley said. “They have relationships with them that go back 10-15-20 years and they care. They genuinely care about the well being of their clients and I love being around that.” Read more: DeSoto Times
