Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a GREAT day!
Greater Freeport Partnership hires executive director
The Greater Freeport Partnership has its first executive director.
Rebecca Motley, an economic development consultant to Rantoul, Illinois, for the past three years, will take the helm June 18, according to a news release.
Motely said she was attracted to the job because it was clear that local stakeholders are passionate about growing the community in a forward-thinking way.
“I’m very impressed with the way both the city and business community appear to have collaborated together on forming the new organization,” Motley said during a phone interview Wednesday. “I think it’s really best practice to really collaborate, if not combine, like we did here.”
Motley has 25 years of experience in economic development, commercial lending, nonprofit management and commercial real estate investment. She recently recruited a hotel, promoted expansion of a food processing facility and developed a Shop Rantoul First marketing campaign for the city of 13,000 that was formerly home to a United States Air Force base.
“We conducted a national search to find a leader with vision, expertise and experience in economic development and community building, and Rebecca stood out among the candidates,” Gary Quinn, chairman of the Greater Freeport Partnership, said in the release. “Working with a diverse group of stakeholders in Rantoul, Rebecca has led a revitalization effort that is transforming the community.”
The Greater Freeport Partnership will take over the duties of the Northwest Illinois Development Alliance, Freeport/Stephenson County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce and Freeport Downtown Development Foundation. The boards of those four organizations voted to form one entity in March.
Motley will hire a planning and development director, a member service director, a tourism and marketing director, visitors center manager and administrative staff. She said local people and those who already are working at one of the organizations will be strongly considered for the seven available positions.
“Certainly, lots of people have invested lots of their lives into building these things and certainly that will all be considered,” Motley said. “People from the area certainly know it, and that’s important to me.” Read more: Journal Standard

She addresses each patients concerns with "What is it you need to make this right".

The Royal Oak Commission for the Arts recently named clay artist Laurie Eisenhardt the winner of its fourth annual Community Arts Award.
Eisenhardt will receive the award, which celebrates Royal Oak residents who have made substantial contributions to promoting art and culture in the city, at the Celebration of the Arts at Royal Oak Middle School June 2.
Jason Gittinger, chair of the commission, said this year’s group of nominees was one of the most difficult to judge yet.
“Judging from the list of nominees, we have many years of award-giving ahead of us before we get to everyone deserving,” he said. “It is truly wonderful to live in a community with such great talent.”
Shirley Schneider nominated Eisenhardt and called her an “ambassador of goodwill everywhere she goes.”
“She has been a steadfast supporter and participant in our local Royal Oak Clay, Glass and Metal Art Show since its beginning and through its evolution, and travels throughout the state and beyond sharing her art,” Schneider’s nomination reads. “She does private and public commissions, working with people from all walks of life, and always works toward her goal of telling a story and sharing beauty, love, nature and culture through her art.”
Schneider also noted in her nomination that Eisenhardt’s work is currently on display at Henry Ford Hospital and at the Southfield Public Library.
Shelly Kemp, executive director of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, praised Eisenhardt for her work on the 14 community mosaic panels located in the Royal Oak Public Library’s children’s area.
Eisenhardt said she was pleasantly surprised when she received the phone call about a month ago that she had won the award. Eisenhardt credited her friend and fellow clay artist, Marcia Hovland, who collaborated with Eisenhardt to create the mosaics now in the library, with her start in the medium.
“I think it’s very validating to get an award like this,” she said. “Sometimes, people know about you, but when you get recognized, it’s just like a nice honor. I think it’s good that groups like this actually work to recognize people in the community, and I’m glad to be a part of it.” Read more: C and G News

Reeves touts successes to Southaven Chamber audience
Reeves touts successes to Southaven Chamber audience
Mississippi Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves says the state can hold its head high when it comes to job and economic growth, and he told a Southaven audience he had the facts and figures to prove it.
Reeves, the featured speaker for the Southaven Chamber of Commerce’s Quarterly Luncheon, highlighted several areas where growth in the Magnolia State has been seen.
Reeves pointed out that his office seeks to create an environment for job creation and growth in Mississippi, adding that each bill enacted under his watch in the state Legislature has passed that litmus test.
“In every single bill, the question we ask is if it is going to create that environment which encourages private sector job growth,” Reeves said. “If the answer is ‘yes,’ we do everything we can to make sure the bill passes. If the answer is ‘no,’ we do everything we can to make sure that bill dies.”
Reeves pointed out that Mississippi’s most recent unemployment rate of 4.3 percent is just slightly above the national jobless rate of 4.1 percent, adding the state figure is the lowest Mississippi rate on record.
“We have a lot of jobs looking for people,” Reeves said.
The lieutenant governor detailed three areas he believed are key to long-term economic growth for a community, county, or the state as a whole.
The areas are a fiscally responsible government, a fair and flat tax code, and an improving education attainment level.
“We now have a budget in Mississippi that truly only spends recurring revenue over current expenses,” Reeves said. “We have $317 million set aside in our rainy day fund, almost six percent of our annual operating budget. Starting July 1, we’re only appropriating 98 percent of expected revenue.”
Reeves said a fair and flat tax code would encourage economic development for the state and pointed out the largest tax cut in state history took place three years ago when the three-percent individual income tax bracket was eliminated and the corporate franchise tax was eliminated.
“Why is this important to DeSoto County?” Reeves asked. “Before, we were put at a competitive disadvantage because all of the states around us didn’t have a corporate franchise tax, but we did have one.”
Regarding education, Reeves said the state will be spending nearly $400 million more in the upcoming fiscal year for education than was spent in fiscal year 2011. Read more:DeSoto Times
