Michigan Chamber of Commerce Announces New Executive Leadership Team
The Michigan Chamber of Commerce today announced a new four-member
executive leadership team. In 2019, the Michigan Chamber will celebrate 60
years of helping Chamber members solve their business problems and prosper.
To continue the Michigan Chamber's tradition of leadership and
accomplishment, we must constantly strive to be an efficient, high-performing
business organization that encourages professional development of Chamber
staff," said Michigan Chamber President & CEO Rich Studley. To prepare
for the next decade of challenges and opportunities facing Michigan's business
community, I am pleased to announce the following, well-deserved promotions.
Jim Holcomb is promoted to Executive Vice President of the Chamber.
Holcomb joined the Chamber staff in 2008. Holcomb most recently served as
Senior Vice President for Business Advocacy & General Counsel. Jim will
continue to serve as General Counsel and will continue to be engaged in
legislative, legal and political action on behalf of the Chamber while becoming
increasingly involved in executive management of the organization.
Bob Thomas is promoted to Chief Operating Officer. Thomas joined the
Chamber staff in 1997. He most recently served as Vice President of Operations
and Executive Director of the Michigan Chamber Foundation. In his new role, Bob
will lead the Chamber's membership development team and continue to supervise
daily operations for the Chamber.
Rounding out the Chamber's new executive leadership team is Wendy Block,
who is promoted to Vice President of Business Advocacy. Block joined the
Chamber staff in 2004. Wendy most recently served as Senior Director of Health
Policy, Human Resources & Business Advocacy. She will continue to be
engaged on health policy and human resources while guiding the Chamber's lobby
team on a wide range of economic and business issues.
Rich Studley, who is now one of the longest serving state chamber
executives in the country, will continue to lead the Michigan Chamber as
President & CEO.
The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is a statewide business organization
representing over 6,000 employers, trade associations and local chambers of
commerce. The Chamber represents employers of every size and type in all 83
counties of the state. Chamber members employ over one million Michigan
residents. The Chamber was established in 1959 to be an advocate for Michigan's
job providers in the legislative, political and legal process.

Chamber host: Create lasting memories at 'Birmingham’s hometown fair'
For the 55th consecutive year, the streets
surrounding Shain Park in downtown Birmingham are alive with the sights and
sounds of one of Michigan’s longest consecutive running hometown carnivals.
Hosted by the Birmingham Bloomfield
Chamber and presented by United Shore, the Birmingham Village Fair has provided
three generations of area residents an opportunity to enjoy carnival rides,
midway games and delectable goodies in a truly unique setting.
As president of the chamber, I’ve had the
privilege of helping guide the fair for the past eight years and never tire of
the sights, smells, sounds and, most of all, stories surrounding the history of
the fair that help weave the fabric of this community.
But the impact of the Village Fair goes
way beyond providing an entertainment outlet for those calling the greater
Birmingham community home. Not only is the fair the largest funding source for
the chamber, but through a unique partnership with dozens of local charities
and nonprofit organizations and thanks to the generosity of the fair operators
North American Midway, the chamber has gifted more than $100,000 in the past eight
years alone to support the work of these important group.
This year’s fair runs through Sunday, so
head on over to downtown Birmingham to create your own family’s memories while
helping groups like Birmingham Rotary, The Community House, the Birmingham
Family YMCA and many more. And don’t forget to try an elephant ear! Complete
details are available at the chamber’s website at www.bbcc.com

#Chamberdelight - Local clay artist
wins Community Arts Award
The Royal Oak Commission
for the Arts recently named clay artist Laurie Eisenhardt the winner of its
fourth annual Community Arts Award.
Eisenhardt will receive
the award, which celebrates Royal Oak residents who have made substantial
contributions to promoting art and culture in the city, at the Celebration of
the Arts at Royal Oak Middle School June 2.
Jason Gittinger, chair
of the commission, said this year’s group of nominees was one of the most
difficult to judge yet.
“Judging from the list
of nominees, we have many years of award-giving ahead of us before we get to
everyone deserving,” he said. “It is truly wonderful to live in a community
with such great talent.”
Shirley Schneider
nominated Eisenhardt and called her an “ambassador of goodwill everywhere she
goes.”
“She has been a
steadfast supporter and participant in our local Royal Oak Clay, Glass and
Metal Art Show since its beginning and through its evolution, and travels
throughout the state and beyond sharing her art,” Schneider’s nomination reads.
“She does private and public commissions, working with people from all walks of
life, and always works toward her goal of telling a story and sharing beauty,
love, nature and culture through her art.”
Schneider also noted in
her nomination that Eisenhardt’s work is currently on display at Henry Ford
Hospital and at the Southfield Public Library.
Shelly Kemp, executive
director of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, praised Eisenhardt for her work
on the 14 community mosaic panels located in the Royal Oak Public Library’s
children’s area.
Eisenhardt said she was
pleasantly surprised when she received the phone call about a month ago that
she had won the award. Eisenhardt credited her friend and fellow clay artist,
Marcia Hovland, who collaborated with Eisenhardt to create the mosaics now in
the library, with her start in the medium.
“I think it’s very
validating to get an award like this,” she said. “Sometimes, people know about
you, but when you get recognized, it’s just like a nice honor. I think it’s
good that groups like this actually work to recognize people in the community,
and I’m glad to be a part of it.” Read more: C and G News
Muskegon wins 'strongest town' contest
A city in the region has been named the winner of a contest to
find the country’s “strongest town.”
Muskegon won the third-annual Strongest Town Contest, a
bracket-based competition organized by Strong Towns, a Brainerd,
Minnesota-based nonprofit community development and media organization.
Towns were considered based on nominations by Strong Towns’
members, readers and listeners, which were submitted based on a list of questions and principles.
Initial contest submissions were judged by a panel of Strong Towns staff and board members, who reduced
the list to 16 towns.
The judges acknowledged Muskegon for its “strong citizen spirit,”
its “wildly successful” farmers market, commitment to re-building downtown and
good use of the Lake Michigan waterfront.
Throughout the month of March, the organization’s members, readers
and listeners were invited to vote on matchups between the towns based on a
variety of assessment tools, including podcast interviews, photos and essays.
The contest page says that although “no town is perfect,” the
contest is about showcasing towns “doing their best to be strong, that have the
building blocks in place to be strong towns today and in the future.”
The Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce led the efforts to recognize the
city through the contest.
“Muskegon has come so far in recent years,” said Cindy Larsen,
chamber president. “It is great for the residents to receive this recognition.
“Strong Towns isn’t about one project or one person. It’s about
everyone chipping in to move a community forward.” Read more: GRBJ.com

Uptick in Tourism Spending
In May,
Michigan tourism officials and members of the Tourism Industry Coalition of
Michigan (TICOM) gathered at Flint’s Capitol Theatre to highlight the economic
impact of travel to the state of Michigan.
The event
– hosted by the Flint & Genesee
Convention and Visitors Bureau – was part of the 35th annual National
Travel and Tourism Week, which unites communities across the country
to celebrate what travel means to American jobs, economic growth and personal
well-being.
According to a study by Tourism Economics, visitor spending
in Michigan grew by 3 percent in 2016 to reach $23.7 billion. That spending
generated $40.7 billion in total business sales as visitor dollars flowed
through the state’s economy. A total of 337,900 jobs, with income of $11.6
billion, were sustained by the traveler economy in Michigan in 2016.
Similar trends are occuring in Genesee County, where visitor
spending has increased every year since 2012. In fact, the county generated
$133 million in tourism spending in 2017 alone.
During the recent event, Flint & Genesee CVB Director
Brandon Morgan shared that hotel occupancy was up 11.5 percent in the first
quarter of 2018, which Smith Travel Research attributes to improved perception
of the region and increased corporate/weekday travel.
That’s good news for Flint & Genesee, where the hospitality
industry, including accommodations and food service, accounts for nearly 10
percent of all jobs.
Looking
forward, major events include Back to the Bricks, which attracts 500,000 car
enthusiasts to the community each year; HAP Crim Festival of Races, which draws
around 55,000 visitors; and the Ally Challenge, a new PGA Tour Champions event
expected to draw 50,000 visitors.

Chamber weekly newsletter: "7 Ways to Make Your Workday
Awesome"
You may actually like your work, and you may already feel that you are plenty productive; on the other hand, you may not really like your work that much and are the first one out the door when you workday is over. You can change that, however, by adding these seven easy elements.
Bring Just A Bit of Fun to Your Workplace
In the morning, while you have you coffee, get online and find a great joke. Type it up, make copies, get in early, and put it on everyone’s desk—anonymously. Your co-workers will begin to look forward to it every morning and it will start their day, and yours, in a totally different way.
Make Someone Else's Day
Notice what snacks or drinks you co-workers consume. Pick one, maybe even the sourest one, and present him/her with it. Do this often—people will actually start to be nicer to each other and they may begin to emulate your behavior.
Hate Your Current Task? Stop and Do Something Fun
Instead of running out of the place to escape for lunch, people began to bring their lunches and stay in, so that we could have our music, but also share our specific challenges and bounce ideas off of one another. Lunchtime became team-meeting time.
Decorate Your Workspace
Do you like colorful balloons? Do it. If you work in a cubby, decorate the outside too. Give your workers some incentive to get creative themselves. You can even hold a contest.
In the Nice Weather, Have A Parking Lot Picnic
Do this once a month or so—bring your grill and have everyone else bring food to share. In the winter, cure those doldrums by organizing a themed lunch—everyone brings a dish.
Put A Team Together to Do Good
Everyone feels really good about themselves, and co-workers begin to establish personal relationships that carryover into the workplace. With those kinds of relationships, you can ask for help when you need it without feeling like you are intruding or irritating someone else.
Find Inspiration from Others
There is a lot of good stuff in print out there. Visit a bookstore and browse through the sections on success and self-help. Pick up a couple of books that speak to making your workplace more enjoyable, including both mental and physical activities that will inspire you and that you can put into practice right away.

Chamber Urges Regional Leadership to Support an Efficient and Reliable Mass
Transit Plan
Citing a need to recruit and retain strong talent in the Metro
Detroit region, the Chamber is calling on leaders to present a regional mass
transit plan to voters on the November ballot
TAYLOR, MI – The Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber has
joined regional corporate and community leaders in calling on our elected
leaders and the Regional Transit Authority Board of Directors to place a
transit plan on the ballot this November that will expand mobility options
throughout Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Washtenaw counties.
"A strong regional mass transit plan is a must as we work to
identify effective strategies to attract the talent that is needed for our
business community in the Metro Detroit region," commented Ronald J.
Hinrichs, president of the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber. "One of
the most significant concerns among our chamber membership is the ability to
recruit and retain talent to help our businesses grow. An effective transit
plan is a necessary investment that will not only help to bring new jobs, but
will assist in attracting the talent that is critical for a thriving business
community."
The Detroit region continues to thrive and grow, however, by any
measure, Southeast Michigan lags behind the rest of the nation in the
development and use of public transit. Amazon noted the state of public transit
as a key reason why Detroit was not chosen as a finalist for the Amazon’s HQ2 -
as have other potential employers.
"It is vital that we learn from our experiences, and come
together to work as a region to implement strong solutions and strategies that
will enhance the business and overall community for generations to
follow," commented Hinrichs. "Regional mass transit is a smart,
positive and effective step in the right direction."

Commerce on Facebook at facebook.com/SWCRC and the Chamber website for all the latest Chamber news and
events.

Idea: Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't - by
Simon Sinek
Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to
work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling
fulfilled. This is not a crazy, idealized notion. Today, in many successful
organizations, great leaders create environments in which people naturally work
together to do remarkable things.
In his work with organizations around the world, Simon Sinek
noticed that some teams trust each other so deeply that they would literally
put their lives on the line for each other. Other teams, no matter what
incentives are offered, are doomed to infighting, fragmentation and failure.
Why?
The answer became clear during a conversation with a Marine Corps
general. "Officers eat last," he said. Sinek watched as the most
junior Marines ate first while the most senior Marines took their place at the
back of the line. What's symbolic in the chow hall is deadly serious on the
battlefield: Great leaders sacrifice their own comfort—even their own
survival—for the good of those in their care.
Too many workplaces are driven by cynicism, paranoia, and
self-interest. But the best ones foster trust and cooperation because their
leaders build what Sinek calls a "Circle of Safety" that separates
the security inside the team from the challenges outside.
Sinek illustrates his ideas with fascinating true stories that
range from the military to big business, from government to investment banking.
