Northwest Indiana Influential Woman
Association looks to advance businesswomen
A new group hopes to give businesswomen
in Northwest Indiana more professional development opportunities to advance
their careers.
The Northwest Indiana Influential Woman
Association recently held its first event at the Crossroads Regional Chamber of
Commerce’s office in Merrillville. The association grew out of the Influential
Women of Northwest Indiana awards banquet, which has recognized prominent
female business and community leaders for years. The association hopes to offer
a support system, networking and educational opportunities.
“There are several organizations in NWI
that focus on niche target areas of professional development for women, but
there’s never been a clear go-to source,” said Erica Dombey, executive board
chair and president of the Regional Development Co. “As we laid the groundwork
for NWIIWA, we formed a strategy geared toward delivering the best results
possible without requiring members to devote their time to mundane meetings. By
drawing upon all of the resources of our membership, together we’re going to be
the authors of success stories for women in our region.”
Dombey, Crossroads Regional Chamber of
Commerce Vice Chairwoman Sue Reed, Ironworkers Local 395 Treasurer Tina
Stevens, OurHealth Secretary Christina Matoski and Diversified Marketing
Strategies President Andrea Pearman serve on the executive governing board of
the group. Other board members include Sister Aline Shultz of Franciscan Health,
Danette Garza of Jack Gray Transport, Africa Tarver of the city of Hammond,
James Muhammad of Lakeshore Public Television, Cynthia Roberts of Indiana
University Northwest, Nick Popovich of Sage Popovich, Charles Nordyke of Vibra
Hospital of Northwestern Indiana, Karen Lauerman of Lake County IN Economic
Alliance, and Rex Richards of the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce.

Greater Kokomo Economic Alliance
hires Kimberly Pinkerton as new Chamber manager
The Greater Kokomo
Economic Development Alliance President/CEO Charlie Sparks has named Kimberly
Pinkerton as the new manager of the Greater Kokomo Chamber of Commerce,
effective Monday.
A longtime leader in
the Wabash community, Pinkerton worked with the Wabash County Chamber of
Commerce for 18 years, serving 13 years as its president and CEO. She has
extensive experience in creating strong partnerships with leaders in business,
workforce development and education, according to an Alliance press release.
“We’re looking forward
to the evolvement of the chamber under Kim’s solid leadership,” Sparks said in
the press release. “We are also excited to add her knowledge and experience to
enhance the Alliance’s workforce development efforts.”
During her tenure with
the Wabash chamber, Pinkerton worked with industry and education partners to
identify career pathways and create a workforce development initiative to bring
21st century technology to local students and create a pipeline of qualified
workers. The partnership resulted in regional initiatives that attracted nearly
$1 million in grants for training and lab programs for both emerging and
existing workers.
Pinkerton holds a
bachelor’s degree in organizational management from Huntington University and
also attended the Indiana Hoosier Chamber Executive Academy. She was named the
2011 Chamber Executive of the Year by Indiana Chamber Executives Association
and was recognized by the Indiana General Assembly, the press release states.
In her new position,
she will facilitate the Greater Kokomo Chamber's growth, membership engagement,
programming and development. In an email to the Tribune, Alliance Manager of
Marketing and Communication Misty Knisely said Pinkerton “will manage the
day-to-day operations of the chamber. She will develop new member benefits as
well as create new programs and services. She will support initiatives focused
on economic development and placemaking.”
“I think there’s so
much opportunity here in Howard County,” said Pinkerton, who now resides in
Kokomo. “You’re already doing great things here, and I’m excited for the
opportunity to continue building those community partnerships that are fueling
Kokomo’s growth momentum.”
“I look forward to
meeting members and stakeholders to find out what their needs are and learn how
I can grow their business and the community,” she said. “The Kokomo chamber
already has a great group of volunteers, and I’m looking forward to working
with them.” Read more: Kokomo

#ChamberDelight: Mural on Main
Street Greensburg celebrated
The long awaited third
mural installment of the “#Distinctive Places” initiative for the Arts and
Cultural Council and MainStreet Greensburg was officially unveiled during a
ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday morning.
Greensburg Economic
Development Corporation Executive Director Brian Robbins, Mayor Dan Manus,
Greensburg Decatur County Chamber of Commerce Director Jeff Emsweller,
MainStreet Greensburg Director Wendy Blake, Arts and Cultural Council President
Mandy Lohrum as well as members of the “Cleansburg” committee and the press
braved chilly winds to celebrate the mural unveiling.
Large letters spelling
out “Love Grows Here” greets guests and local residents as they head east on
Main Street. The new mural, painted by Zane Stats of Green Bay, Wisconsin, is
permanently affixed to the western face of the Medical Cab building at 312 W.
Main Street.
“I got a call for
artists back in January or February of 2017 and submitted a proposal, but
didn’t hear anything back from Greensburg until last fall,” Stats said. “In my
design, I wanted to focus on the agricultural aspect of the town of Greensburg.
I always like to use positive messages, and I believe that you can never have
too much color, so we worked back and forth to come up with this final result.”
Rather than creating
his latest masterpiece on the side of the building, Stats worked his magic in
advance.
“I painted it in my
garage, and I only have room enough to do six sheets of MDO plywood, a special
artists’s plywood that resists the weather and doesn’t curl or warp. So, I did
lots of math and crossed my fingers, and it all lined up. I didn’t get to see
it all together and finished until we installed it on Wednesday and Thursday,”
Stats said. “I spent most of yesterday doing touch-ups and giving it a good
coat of polyurethane to give it a little gloss.”
Stats, a graduate of
St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, earned his bachelor degree in Art
and a minor in business. He works for an advertising agency traveling across
the country, taking photographs of company’s products and creating marketing
materials from them.
“I paint murals in my
spare time for my own company, ZAS Designs,” he told the Daily News. “And I
don’t do small. I only do big murals.”
The brightly colored
effort was well received by those on hand Saturday.
“This thing just pops
out at you whether you’re coming in off 46 or you just stop at the traffic
light by 5/3rd Bank,” Emsweller observed. “This town has talked a lot about it
and is really excited by it. I would love to see it at all the entrances to
Greensburg. I think it’s great!” Read more: Greensburg

Gov. Holcomb and Hoosier delegation
departing Indiana Friday on European trade mission
Gov. Eric Holcomb and a delegation of
Hoosier business and political leaders are traveling Friday from Indiana to
Europe on a trade mission featuring stops in six countries over the next seven
days.
The group, which includes House Speaker
Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, and retiring Senate President David Long, R-Fort
Wayne, will begin its journey in the Czech Republic, with meetings to promote
Indiana's global economy and to seek opportunities to strengthen the state's
international ties.
From there they'll travel to Slovakia to
hobnob with Slovak government and military officials, and then to Switzerland
for meetings with executives at Nestle and Roche, two Swiss companies with
large Indiana operations.
On Tuesday, delegation members are due
to meet executives of Fronius International, which specializes in welding,
charging and solar energy technology, at the company's headquarters in
Pettenbach, Austria.
Fronius' U.S. headquarters is in
Portage.
The Hoosiers then will spend two days in
Germany, one of Indiana's largest foreign investors, where they'll host a
Friends of Indiana reception for representatives of some of the 121 German
businesses already operating in Indiana, as well as business leaders looking to
expand into the state. They also plan to meet with German government officials,
investigate workforce development programs and promote Indiana at an American
Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Berlin.
The final stop Friday is in Paris, where
Holcomb will cut the ribbon for the inaugural nonstop Delta flight from the
French capital to Indianapolis.
The Republican governor also is
traveling back to Indiana on that flight carrying the green flag that will be
used May 27 to start the annual Indianapolis 500 auto race.
"We'll travel anywhere in the world
to develop mutually beneficial relationships, open markets for Hoosier
companies and to bring back jobs and investments to Indiana," Holcomb
said.
The European trip is Holcomb's sixth
foreign trade mission since taking office last year. Earlier this month, he led
an Indiana group to Israel. Read more: NWI Times

Public Schools to ask for $52 million from taxpayers for school safety on
November ballot
Indianapolis
Public Schools is moving ahead with one of its plans to ask Indy
homeowners to agree to a tax hike to support city schools.
The
capital referendum now will allow the district to raise $52 million for school
safety projects and maintenance instead of $200 million they were initially
going to ask for.
Under the
new plan, someone who owns a home valued at more than $123,000 would see their
taxes go up about $16 each year.
The $52
million would be used for capital expenses including 2,500 retrofitted doors,
new lighting and strengthening windows with a special film and fire safety
improvements across the district.
The district is
still working with the Indy Chamber on what it will request as part of its
operating referendum which will help with teacher salaries. That additional
figure will likely increase the proposed tax hike.
Those
numbers could be available by the end of June or early July. Read more: RTV 6
Ivy Tech Partners With
Indiana Chamber For Workforce Development
A new partnership between
the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and Ivy Tech Community College will make
tuition discounts available to some Hoosier employees as part of an existing
program at the 2-year college.
Ivy Tech’s Achieve Your
Degree program connects Hoosiers with education programs – and financial aid
options – to build their career credentials. The new partnership between Ivy
Tech and the Indiana Chamber expands those efforts and includes a 5 percent
discount on tuition costs not already covered by financial aid, for employees at
the chamber’s member companies.
Ivy Tech’s Senior Vice
President for Workforce Alignment, Chris Lowery, says, it’s a response to the
state’s growing workforce needs.
“I think the way we’re
looking at it is, the need is vast. I mean it is enormous, again, I hear from
employers every day that they just don’t have all the talent they need,” he
says.
Lowery says the new
partnership is a key piece of the college’s goals to increase the median wage
in Indiana, and the number of degrees and certificates awarded at Ivy Tech each
year.
The chamber also sees it
as a way to hit its own targets. The Chamber’s Vice President of Communication
and Operations Tom Schuman says the group’s wide-reaching business connections
make it easier to spread the word about the program.
“We have 45-50 events a
year in which we do training, a lot of it’s HR and safety training, well we
have the right people in the room to help make them aware of Achieve Your
Degree,” he says.
Ivy Tech started Achieve
Your Degree in 2015. Schuman says growing it will allow employers to do even
more to skill up Indiana’s workforce, a key goal for the chamber by
2025. Read more: WFYI Indianapolis

Spencer
County Regional Chamber Annual Meeting: Governor Holcomb: All officials must
work together
Partnership and collaboration were common themes in Gov. Eric
Holcomb’s question and answer session during the Spencer County Regional
Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting Thursday.
The Q&A covered several topics, including broadband
connectivity in rural areas, school safety, the opioid crisis and agriculture.
“It always comes back to connections and partnerships,” Holcomb
said in response to a question about rural broadband.
In his opinion, expanding internet access in rural areas is part
of improving Indiana’s infrastructure. Holcomb touted Indiana’s transportation
infrastructure — particularly the ports and Indianapolis International Airport,
which Airports Council International named the best airport in North America
for the sixth-straight year — and then acknowledged that the state is lacking
in internet connectivity for rural areas. Though Holcomb didn’t go into detail,
he said his administration is working to create programs that will feature
state partnerships with local communities to augment the work that’s already
being done to bring internet access to rural areas.
Another question brought up the recent school shooting at
Noblesville West Middle School and asked what the state is doing to ensure
school safety.
“We are doing more than most states, frankly,” Holcomb said,
mentioning that Indiana runs a school safety academy for officials from other
states. Read more: Dubois County

Idea: Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't - by
Simon Sinek
Imagine a world where almost everyone wakes up inspired to go to
work, feels trusted and valued during the day, then returns home feeling
fulfilled. This is not a crazy, idealized notion. Today, in many successful
organizations, great leaders create environments in which people naturally work
together to do remarkable things.
In his work with organizations around the world, Simon Sinek
noticed that some teams trust each other so deeply that they would literally
put their lives on the line for each other. Other teams, no matter what
incentives are offered, are doomed to infighting, fragmentation and failure.
Why?
The answer became clear during a conversation with a Marine Corps
general. "Officers eat last," he said. Sinek watched as the most
junior Marines ate first while the most senior Marines took their place at the
back of the line. What's symbolic in the chow hall is deadly serious on the
battlefield: Great leaders sacrifice their own comfort—even their own
survival—for the good of those in their care.
Too many workplaces are driven by cynicism, paranoia, and
self-interest. But the best ones foster trust and cooperation because their
leaders build what Sinek calls a "Circle of Safety" that separates
the security inside the team from the challenges outside.
Sinek illustrates his ideas with fascinating true stories that
range from the military to big business, from government to investment banking.

Indy’s 16 Tech Development to
Accelerate Innovation, Build Community
A new urban innovation district aims to become the advanced
industry epicenter of Indianapolis.
Indianapolis is known as the “Racing Capital of
the World.” And just a few miles from the famed Motor Speedway, plans to build
the 16 Tech innovation community are rushing forward at breakneck speed.
Over the last year, the state of Indiana has
doubled-down on funding for the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI),
16 Tech’s anchor tenant and the brainchild of former Eli Lilly and Company
Chairman John Lechleiter. IBRI is a model for shared life sciences research and
development with potential to span high-tech industries.
As the city of Indianapolis invests in
infrastructure supporting 16 Tech’s master plan, a major philanthropic boost
was announced in March: The Indy-based Lilly Endowment awarded a $38M grant for
trails, parks, and public art across the 60-acre community, including a new
bridge connecting it to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis
(IUPUI) and the IU School of Medicine.
The Urbanization of Innovation
The nation’s high-tech terrain used to appear
suburban — from the archetypical Silicon Valley garage to sprawling,
self-contained corporate campuses surrounded by acres of parking. But times
have changed.
“Today, innovation is taking place in urban
areas, near research campuses and business centers,” said Bob Coy, a veteran
economic and entrepreneurial development expert who took the helm as 16 Tech’s
president and CEO last June. “16 Tech can create a critical mass of human
capital and R&D capacity in the heart of one of the nation’s leading
regions for advanced industries.”
The Brookings Institution — which ranks the
Indy region among major metropolitan leaders in cutting-edge manufacturing,
life sciences, and information technology employment and output — has also
studied “The Rise of Innovation Districts,” finding dozens of examples in
cities across the country. But in many ways, 16 Tech offers a unique
proposition for advanced industry businesses eager to plug into an urban
innovation ecosystem…starting with a thriving community of corporate and
academic partners. Read more: Area Development
