Greater Green Bay Chamber Named Finalist for National Award
Green Bay, Wis.-
(June 18, 2018) – The Greater Green Bay Chamber has been named a finalist for
the 2018 Chamber of the Year award, presented by Alexandria, Va.-based
Association of Chamber of Commerce Executive.
The award is the most
prestigious and competitive recognition presented annually by the Association
of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE). ACCE is an association of more than
8,000 professionals from 1,300 chambers, including 93 of the top 100 U.S. metro
areas.
The Chamber of the
Year award recognizes the leadership role chambers have in their communities.
Those honored with the Chamber of the Year designation have demonstrated
organizational strength and made an impact on key community priorities, such as
education, transportation, business development and quality of life.
Chamber of the Year
winners will be announced at the 2018 ACCE Annual Convention in Des Moines,
Iowa.

Chambers interested
in competing for the award first must qualify by participating in a vigorous
multi-stage process. Organizations entering the Chamber of the Year competition
must meet minimum thresholds in at least three of five key performance areas,
including net revenue and assets, membership account retention, and membership
dollar retention.
Qualifying for
Chamber of the Year is a rigorous process. Chambers compete based on meeting
key performance criteria on the ACCE Annual Operations Survey. Qualifying
chambers enter the competition with a written application addressing all
aspects of organizational operation and programmatic work. Applications are
scored by peer chamber executives to determine finalists. Winners are selected
from among finalists based on an in-person interview before a panel of
experienced chamber professionals.
This year's competition
drew numerous entries from chambers throughout the U.S and Canada. To ensure
the fairest competition, applicants are grouped into five categories based on:

New nonstop flights could bring investment and talent to Madison
Make no mistake, the daily nonstop
flights between Madison and San Francisco, starting June 7, will save you time
and possibly money on your next trip to the Bay Area. But that’s not why local
business leaders are hailing the new direct route by United Airlines as a
couple years in the making.
“I’ve had people say to me, ‘Great,
you’ve saved me a couple hours.’ And other people tell me that having to get a
[connecting] flight from Denver isn’t that bad,” says Zach Brandon, president
of the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce. Make no mistake, the daily nonstop
flights between Madison and San Francisco, starting June 7, will save you time
and possibly money on your next trip to the Bay Area. But that’s not why local
business leaders are hailing the new direct route by United Airlines as a coup
years in the making.
“But this isn’t about Madison
finding San Francisco. This is about San Francisco finding Madison,” he says.
While Madison’s reputation builds
as a growing technology center, Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area
firmly occupy the epicenter for the nation’s tech industry and venture capital
firms.
Some $30 billion or 44 percent of
venture capital in the U.S. is invested in startups in the Bay Area and Silicon
Valley. That has resulted in the reluctance of venture capitalists there to
consider backing startups elsewhere.
San Francisco is the 15th nonstop
destination from the Dane County Regional Airport, albeit the first West Coast
city. But Brandon says San Francisco was “the one” Madison officials were
seeking. “This is the singular destination that can make a measurable impact on
Madison’s economy,” Brandon says.
According to airport officials, the
daily United flight from Madison to San Francisco will generate annually more
than $622,000 in airport revenue, almost $1.4 million in visitor spending in
the Madison area and $116,000 in airfare savings for passengers. Read

Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce
Foundation awards five $2,500.00 scholarships
The Kenosha Area Chamber
of Commerce Foundation has awarded five $2,500.00 scholarships to students who
were chosen based on positive character, leadership skills, academic
excellence, community involvement and future aspirations.
Scholarship presentations
will take place at the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting on July
31 at The Club at Strawberry Creek.
The foundation was formed
in 1994 with the purpose to provide college scholarships to Kenosha County high
school students. The 2018 scholarship recipients include:
Willem Fellman, of
Bradford High School, representing chamber member Johnson Bank, who plans to
attend University of Wisconsin-Madison to study entrepreneurship.
Kadie Kraabel, of Indian
Trail High School, representing chamber member Aurora Health Care, who plans to

Weekly New Idea: Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others

Imagine a world where almost
everyone wakes up inspired to go to work, feels trusted and valued during the
day, then returns home feeling fulfilled. This is not a crazy, idealized
notion. Today, in many successful organizations, great leaders create
environments in which people naturally work together to do remarkable things.
In his work with organizations
around the world, Simon Sinek noticed that some teams trust each other so
deeply that they would literally put their lives on the line for each other.
Other teams, no matter what incentives are offered, are doomed to infighting,
fragmentation and failure. Why?
The answer became clear during a
conversation with a Marine Corps general. "Officers eat last," he
said. Sinek watched as the most junior Marines ate first while the most senior
Marines took their place at the back of the line. What's symbolic in the chow
hall is deadly serious on the battlefield: Great leaders sacrifice their own
comfort—even their own survival—for the good of those in their care.
Too many workplaces are driven by
cynicism, paranoia, and self-interest. But the best ones foster trust and
cooperation because their leaders build what Sinek calls a "Circle of
Safety" that separates the security inside the team from the challenges
outside.

Resources’ session offered Wednesday in Neenah
The Wisconsin Economic Development
Corporation, Fox Cities Chamber, Fox Cities Regional Partnership, Oshkosh
Chamber of Commerce, Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership and Greater
Oshkosh Economic Development Corporation have partnered to offer Real Resources
for Manufacturers. The program will be 7:30-9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Best Western
Premiere Bridgewood Resort Hotel and Conference Center, 1000 Cameron Way,
Neenah.

Dozens of Wisconsin companies give
millions in raises, bonuses, because of federal tax reform
More than 30 companies in Wisconsin
have given raises and bonuses to their employees, donated to local charities,
invested in new equipment, hired new employees, enhanced benefit packages, and
reduced rates, all citing the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act that President Donald
Trump signed into law last December.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce
created an interactive tax map and
Americans for Tax Reform compiled a comprehensive
list of businesses giving raises, bonuses, and other savings to
employees and customers in Wisconsin. The U.S. Treasury Department projects
that the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act will result in 90 percent of wage earners
receiving higher take-home pay.
Tax reform unleashed “a new era of
growth for the American economy,” the chamber said. It notes that business
leaders are already “investing back into their companies, rewarding their

The Sheboygan County Chamber of Commerce has announced the addition of Carol Pringle as administrative coordinator. Pringle was born and raised in Ohio and attended the University of Ohio-Akron. She lived in Illinois for the past 22 years with her husband and two children.
Pringle worked as a professional photographer for 10 years and then she worked at Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce for the last three and a half years as community outreach coordinator before moving to Sheboygan.

Sioux Falls Development Foundation
names Bob Mundt new CEO
The Sioux Falls Development Foundation has named its next president and CEO.
Bob Mundt, president and CEO of Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce in Appleton, Wisconsin, will step into the role at the economic development foundation mid-July.
"With over 25 years of economic development experience, Bob Mundt has the energy, the background and the expertise to continue the Development Foundation’s mission to grow our economy,” said Bob Thimjon, board chairman of the Development Foundation, in a news release. “He understands the challenges of building our workforce, helping existing businesses expand and recruiting new companies to our region. His leadership will serve our organization and community well in the years ahead.”
The Fox Cities Regional Chamber of Commerce, a combined chamber and economic development organization, serves four cities and a number of smaller communities in a three-county area about 30 miles south of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Read more: Argus-Leader
TIF money could fix Janesville's
housing shortage, developers say
To solve Janesville’s
housing shortage, two real estate developers encouraged the city to consider
using tax increment financing to spark new residential activity.
That suggestion was one of
the biggest takeaways from Wednesday’s community housing and development forum.
The city and Forward Janesville co-sponsored the event at the Pontiac
Convention Center.
The forum, which drew about
75 people, explored the city’s need for multiple types of housing. It included
a small-group brainstorming session, but when the event ran long, organizers
decided to table the groups’ sharing of ideas for another date.
During an opening panel,
Hovde Properties President Mike Slavish said developers are disinclined to
build here because rents are so low. In downtown Madison, where Hovde is based,
rents run between $2 and $2.50 per square foot.
In Janesville, that number
is about 87 cents. But construction costs are generally the same between the
cities, so it’s tough for developers to see a return on their investment—unless
they’re receiving some sort of public incentive, he said.
Slavish proposed a
pay-as-you-go TIF deal. The landowner would pay taxes, and the municipality
would return a percentage of that payment, he said.
In Waunakee, Hovde
negotiated a deal in which the city returned 85 percent of the project’s tax
payment in the first decade after construction, and then 65 percent in years 11
through 20, Slavish said.
“The great thing about that
is the municipality spends none of their own money. The developer pays them,
and then they kick back a portion of that,” he said. “It’s really a pretty
simple structure. It’s utilized by a lot of communities throughout the state of
Wisconsin.”
In a particularly strong
statement, Brent Dahlstrom of the Iowa-based Echo Development Group said his
company likely wouldn’t consider building in a market if that municipality
