Good morning Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

#Chamberheart: West Virginia Chamber to offer grant help to flooded small businesses

At least $100,000 in grant funding will initially be available through the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce Foundation for qualifying small business owners trying to recover from the devastating June 23 flood.

“Many small businesses really are the fabric of a community, particularly in a small town.”“What we need to do is help get some of these small businesses back on their feet as soon as possible,” said Steve Roberts, president of the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber, he said, is trying to fill a need with the grant program, funded with donations, since so many affected business owners did not have flood insurance and assistance options for flooded businesses from the federal government are largely limited to low-interest loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Individuals can qualify for grant assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, businesses cannot.

Helping businesses with flood recovery helps communities, in Roberts’ view.

“Imagine if you’re a small hardware store or you’re a small lumber company, right now, people want to get to you to get the supplies and materials they need,” he said. “The sooner we get them back on their feet, the sooner we get them open, the sooner those communities begin to recover.”

As of Thursday, about $100,000 had been raised for the Chamber’s grant effort and, Roberts said, that amount was growing each day. During a preliminary survey, about 50 applications for or interest in the direct mini-grants for small businesses had been identified.

The West Virginia Bankers Association is working with the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce on the effort.

Greater Madison Chamber launches HealthTech Capitol website to promote Madison area

The Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce announced Friday the launch of the HealthTech Capitol website healthtechcapitol.com as part of an initiative dedicated to establishing Madison as a leader for health innovation by allowing companies to leverage talent, capital and mentoring.

"With a robust ecosystem of world-class research, the market leader in electronic medical records, entrepreneurs and a strong network of payers and providers, Greater Madison is already a leader in health innovation," said Chamber President Zach Brandon. "HealthTech Capitol will help build on these strengths by supporting companies and talent in our region and building an infrastructure that will amplify our health discoveries to the world."

HealthTech Capitol represents efforts begun in 2012 by entrepreneurs to make greater Madison the best place to start and grow a health technology company. The effort brought together a group of emerging health tech companies and providers from the Madison area, including HealthX Ventures, Moxe, Healthfinch, Forward Health Group and Wellbe. Valpo Chamber interest: Man behind the scenes: Jon Schmaltz

The Region has been a hub for growth, with new commercial districts, growing recreational attractions, businesses and housing developments sprouting in recent years. From the outside, community members see fresh stores and restaurants, new employment opportunities and new parks and subdivisions popping up in their towns and cities.
But what they don't always see are the years of work, fundraising and planning that went into those new projects.
Jon Schmaltz has been, in many cases, the man behind the scenes. That includes recent projects like the $20 million bond and referendum for Valparaiso Community Schools and improvements at Valparaiso's Central Park Plaza.
“As a relatively younger leader, Jon has made such a large impact on the community that will last and continue to affect the area for years to come,” said Rex Richards, president and CEO of the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce.
An attorney, Schmaltz has worked with Burke Costanza and Carberry LLP in Valparaiso for close to 17 years.
He graduated from Purdue University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science before earning his law degree from Indiana University School of Law in 1999.
Schmaltz works within the Business and Personal Services Practice Group of Burke Costanza and Carberry LLP where he represents clients in land use and zoning matters, loan transactions, business and real estate acquisitions and private equity and debt placements. More information: NWI Times

#BestChamber Practices: Chamber program Leadership Hopkins County

  • Leadership Hopkins County Class of 2016
  • For more than three decades, the Chamber has presented Leadership Hopkins County, a yearly class designed to identify, educate, and inspire leaders to serve our community.
Leadership Hopkins County graduates are expected to be positive role models; active community leaders who are open-minded to change and innovation; able to utilize networking skills; educated on current community issues; and committed to effecting community improvement.
The goals of the program are to: Familiarize emerging leaders with one another and with the community's current business and civic leadership; provide these leaders with an understanding of major challenges and opportunities facing Hopkins County; stimulate increased participation and commitment in the community; create opportunities to increase knowledge and skills in community leadership; offer increased contacts and broader communication networks; and provide greater access and participation in addressing community needs.
The Leadership Hopkins County program is administered by a Board of Directors comprised of past graduates of the program. The program includes:
    • An overnight retreat facilitated by Lynn Miller Pease, CEO of Leadership Evansville. During the retreat participants discover their inherent leadership traits and how to develop them for the good of the community. The Chamber gratefully acknowledges the support of Fifth Third Bank, the sponsor of our annual Leadership Hopkins County retreat, which sets the tone and pace for the yearly program.
    • Monthly Program Days organized to educate participants about county government, industries, health care, education, and other vital programs and services.
    • A two-day visit to Frankfort to learn about state government
    • A graduation luncheon

The class is also expected to work together as a whole or in teams to organize, perform, and complete community service projects during the Leadership year.
Download the application for the 2016-2017 class of Leadership Hopkins County here. You can also call the Chamber at (270) 821-3435 to request a copy. Tuition payment is due no later than September 2, 2016. See the application for more details.

Columbus - Lowndes Chamber Celebrates Year of Success

Columbus Lowndes Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual luncheon open to all Chamber members on July 13, 2016. The event took place at Lion Hills Center from 11:30-1:00 and there were 150 guests in attendance.
I am excited to share all of our Chamber achievements with our membership at the annual luncheon” said Joey Bragg, CLCC President. “It’s our chance to really highlight the incredible programs and events we have been able to make happen in our community this year”.
Some highlights discussed were the upwards of $10,000 of scholarships given away this year through the Chamber of Commerce, the $25,000 raised for a new sign at the entrance of Columbus Air Force Base, the 375 CAFB Pilots whose lives are touched monthly for a personal welcome to Columbus through the Chamber Military Affairs Committee, and the 2 “Pilot for A Day” programs benefitting terminally ill children.
Bragg recognized that none of this would have been possible without the Chamber members getting involved. Bragg acknowledged and thanked all the committee members and committee chairs of Education, Military Affairs, Chamber Ambassadors, Chamber Board, Columbus Young Professionals and more. Bragg even thanked Barbara Bigelow at Columbus Main Street for being so easy to work with on Sounds of Summer. “This year, despite the heat, is the greatest attendance we have ever seen at Sounds of Summer,” said Bragg.
