Brynn Swanson resigns as coordinator of the Baileys Harbor Community Association (BHCA); will continue as part-time marketing coordinator

Brynn Swanson, who has been the coordinator of the Baileys Harbor Community Association (BHCA) for the past 4½ years, announced at the (Baileys Harbor Town Board) meeting that she had turned in her resignation due to an unnamed incident that took place during the Fourth of July event the association puts on.
“I had an unfortunate experience on the Fourth of July and kind of lost my interest in doing this,” she told the board, saying she met with the BHCA board last Thursday and told them of her decision.
“The board asked me to consider staying on,” she said. “I am going to stay on part-time just to do the marketing. I do not wish to have any contact with any vendors. I do not want to be in the public eye.”
She said the board decided to split her job into three positions. Swanson will be the part-time marketing coordinator. Another person will be hired to run the visitor center from April to October, and a third person will be hired to serve as event coordinator.
Saying her term as coordinator will end on Aug. 1, Swanson said, “I am confident with the work we’ve all put into place, it will continue to be good.” Read more: Door County Pulse

Greater Springfield Chamber, LLCC launch business internships for minorities

A three-year pilot project of internships for minorities at local businesses begins this fall at Lincoln Land Community College.
The OPEN DOOR program, funded by a $285,000 commitment -- $95,000 a year for three years -- from The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce Q5 economic development program, initially will focus on African-American male students in business-related courses, according to organizers. Work has begun to hire a program coordinator and on selection of the first group of 20 to 30 students. The LLCC program is a spin-off of a similar "Grow Our Own" minority recruitment program begun a little more than two years ago at engineering and consulting firm Hanson Professional Services of Springfield.
"We're hearing from a lot of folks who would like to be a part of this," said chamber president and CEO Chris Hembrough. "We believe this will help with retention of sharp, rising students here in our community if they build that relationship with local companies."
He said the decision to focus the initiative on African-American males was made in consultation with LLCC and local school districts. The program, he added, could eventually be expanded to other minority students and women.
LLCC vice president of student services Lesley Frederick said the school has begun screening potential students for internships in a variety of fields from banking to internet technology. She said it's possible some of the internships would be paid, but it's not a requirement.
"It would go along with the academic year," Frederick said. "We'll be supporting them though the academic programs, depending on what their goals are."

Frederick said the internships would continue through two-year academic programs, as well as for students planning to transfer to a four-year college. Read more: State Journal Register

The keynote speaker was C-SPIRE President and CEO Hu Meena, who spoke about the company's future as an internet provider and the cellular service industry.
“We're about helping local companies grow and prosper, and recruiting new companies from around the world,” ADP President Chad Newell said. “Our unemployment rate is down to 4.6%. We've had 1600 net new jobs in the last 12 months. That's a 2.6% increase in our employment base, which leads the state of Mississippi.”
