Greater Elkhart, Goshen Chambers interest: What will Thor's purchase of Jayco mean for Elkhart County, employees?

A merger of two giants in the local RV industry won't bring many changes for employees, but significantly alters the make-up of the industry behind the scenes.
Thor Industries, the world's largest RV maker, announced Friday it would acquire the family-owned Jayco Inc., a Middlebury-based manufacturer, for $576 million. But little will change for employees when they return to work Tuesday after the holiday weekend, including the management team at Jayco.
“We’ll continue to stay active as we have over the last 48 years,” Derald Bontrager, Jayco President and CEO, said. “It's going to be seamless for our customers, our dealers and our employees.”
For Elkhart County, where Thor and Jayco employ a combined 11,200 people, the acquisition is big news. But Brian Clark, chairman of the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, said the change shouldn't affect the area in a negative way.
“Thor is known for buying these companies and running them well,” he said. “Thor has a lot of innovative products and Jayco as well. I think it will be positive overall.”
David Daugherty, Goshen Chamber of Commerce president and CEO, said he thinks the acquisition will bring positive changes to Jayco.
"I think the fact will be that it continues the tradition of Jayco but in a new family," he said. "I think it will be a minimal impact of the county. But it will strengthen the product at Jayco and the various products that Thor makes. It’s a good marriage between he two."
Jayco will operate as a subsidiary of Thor, leaving existing management in place for Jayco's existing brands: Jayco, Starcraft, Entegra Coach and Highland Ridge.
Mark Dobson, president and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Elkhart County, said Thor has a history of making acquisitions and leaving the operations largely untouched.
“Thor’s acquisition mode has been such that the companies acquired have been able to remain autonomous, rather than cutting staff to build an economy of scale,” he said. Read more: Elkhart Truth

Kenosha Area Chamber interest: KABA, Downtown Kenosha Inc. to split
Call it a friendly, but inevitable split.
This week, Downtown Kenosha Inc. was told that its relationship with the Kenosha Area Business Alliance would be severed. KABA, which had been a founding partner and large element in the financial support of the downtown redevelopment organization, told DKI it would no longer be a significant source of financial support.
KABA provided office space and other in-kind support to Downtown Kenosha Inc. That arrangement ended, as well.
DKI was created, in part, out of a recommendation in a downtown redevelopment study. Three years ago today, Kenosha was awarded Main Street status from the state of Wisconsin, a five-year grant that brings the city financial and technical support for downtown development efforts.
At the start, the city, KABA, the Kenosha Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Kenosha Lakeshore Business Improvement District agreed to fund the activities of DKI.
Kenosha County had also been a funding source for DKI working through KABA. How that support might change is unknown at this point. According to Jennie Tunkieicz, chief of staff to County Executive Jim Kreuser, a meeting with DKI has not yet been scheduled.
“We are currently working on our 2017 budget, so we will certainly give this consideration as we go through this process,” Tunkieicz said. “The county’s contribution was part of our $100,000 annual allocation to KABA, but I don’t know how much of that KABA used (to help fund DKI). We were one of multiple partners who contributed to this effort.” Read more: Kenosha News
