Chamber pride: Two Kentucky cities among ten great Southern downtowns – big and small – that are worth a visit
Chamber pride: Two Kentucky cities among ten great Southern downtowns – big and small – that are worth a visit
Mt. Sterling, Kentucky
Founded in 1792, Mt. Sterling is a small, friendly city steeped in the history of Kentucky. Located on the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and the edge of the Bluegrass Region, many sites and buildings in the town can be found on the historic registers. Mt. Sterling’s downtown is full of beautifully restored buildings, churches, and homes (some dating back over 200 years), and unique shopping and dining. A downtown walking tour begins at the History Museum located next to the Courthouse, and includes a dozen sites within a three-block area.
The Ruth Hunt Candy Factory is the official candy maker of the Kentucky Derby and the 2010 Equestrian Games. Visitors can watch as they make their famous pulled cream candy bars "Blue Monday" or sample their Woodford Reserve bourbon balls. . .a Kentucky tradition.
Owensboro, Kentucky
A few years ago, Owensboro, Ky., decided to reinvent itself. In the midst of the great recession, this Ohio River town invested over $120 million in its waterfront, and the private sector soon matched it. The same designers who created the fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas created signature fountains in Owensboro. A contemporary 92,000-square-foot convention center and two new riverfront hotels are also located there. Anchored between the convention center and its RiverPark Center (which hosts Broadway shows and a full-time symphony) is Smother’s Park, which boasts the country’s largest ADA-accessible outdoor playground. Within walking distance of the hotel are shops and local restaurants aplenty, as well as the International Bluegrass Music Museum (Bluegrass music was invented just down the road by Bill Monroe).

Indy Chamber Offers New TogetHR™ Program to Help Small- to Mid-Sized Businesses Thrive
The Indy Chamber announced today the launch of
TogetHR, a program that bundles comprehensive HR services with a
complete line of employee benefits, all aimed at helping small- to
mid-sized companies streamline HR processes and grow their businesses.
Indy Chamber members can now join the TogetHR program,
which allows companies to cost-effectively partner with locally based
Tilson, a leading Professional Employer Organization (PEO), for the
management of many HR functions. The partnership with Tilson provides a
larger employee pool, so smaller companies can access large-group
pricing for a breadth of valuable HR services and products, including
health insurance and many other employee benefits.
“TogetHR is truly missional for the Indy Chamber,” said
Melissa Cotterill, Chief Operating Officer of the Indy Chamber. “We’ve
worked hard to develop a program that addresses many of our members’ top
pain points and allows business leaders time to focus on what they do
best – growing their business.”
TogetHR enables small- and mid-sized companies to offer
competitive employee benefits at large group pricing, access technology
for paperless employee onboarding, information tracking, and benefits
enrollment; and relieves the daily burden of administering HR functions,
such as payroll and government reporting. Read more: Indy Chamber

The eighth annual Cranberry Blossom Fest kicks off June 18 with four days of fun and festivities all centered about the tart fruit and its flowering blossoms.
The festival has become a place for people to gather, meet neighbors and celebrate the cranberry. One of the featured events, Downtown Classic Cinema Under the Stars, is celebrating its 10th year, and became part of festival in 2006.
"It just worked out well to be one of the first events of the Cranberry Blossom Fest during that weekend," Kristopher Gasch, one of the organizers of the cinema event.
"It's the same movie we showed at the very first (cinema) event 10 years ago," Gasch said, referring to the 1939 classic starring Judy Garland. "We thought 10 years was a good enough time to circle back and to it again."
The movie, which will start around dusk on June 18, is projected on the side of semitrailer on West Grand Avenue between Second and Third Streets; there is no charge. Food also will be available for purchase, including popcorn and cotton candy.
"It feel likes a drive in movie," Gasch said. "It's always fun to be somewhere you're not supposed to be, and you don't normally watch movies in the middle of the street." Read more: Wisonsin Rapids Tribune
