Chamber good news: Plymouth named one of Michigan’s best in business

A personal finance website has named Plymouth one of the best cities in Michigan for starting a business.
Plymouth was ranked third, after Auburn Hills and Traverse City, on San Francisco-based NerdWallet’s list of the top 15 cities in the state in which to go into business. The list was released last week.
Among the pluses the site listed for Plymouth were the average business revenue ($1.28 million), the unemployment rate (4.2 percent) and an “impressive” number of businesses for every 100 people (nearly 20). A “picturesque downtown” and a lineup of public events like concerts and festivals were also noted.
The high ranking wasn’t a surprise to Teresa Pilarz, owner of Espresso Elevado, a specialty coffee shop that opened in 2011. Research told her the type of shop she wanted to open would be a good fit for Plymouth and four years of growth have confirmed the city was the right choice, she said. Read more: Hometownlife.com

June Skokie (Illinois) Chamber of Commerce Tip: Network Through Volunteering

The spring and summertime is filled with festivals and community events and the Skokie Chamber often looks for Chamber volunteers to assist at these events. For the Skokie Festival of Cultures (May) and the North Shore Festival of Art (July) we look for volunteers to help run the Chamber's table.  Volunteers have the opportunity to network with other Chamber volunteers as well as community members and can put out business cards and trifold-style brochures at the table.  At the upcoming Taste of Skokie Valley (June 18) we need assistance with various things like set-up, check-in, watching auction tables, and selling raffle tickets.  This indoor taste event usually attracts over 400 people and is another excellent opportunity for networking with Chamber, Rotary, and community members.  Other community and special events throughout the year for which we usually need volunteers include Skokie's Spring Greening (April), Skokie's Backlot Bash (August), Annual Golf Outing & Fundraiser (September), and Annual Holiday Party & Auction (December).  If volunteering at any or all of these events is of interest to you, please contact Kate Danziger, Skokie Chamber Office Manager, at (847) 673-0240 or email newsletter@skokiechamber.org.
