Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a great day!

From Jenn Kinne, Farmville Chamber: Governor Northam Invites Small Businesses and Nonprofits to Apply for Up to $100,000 from Rebuild VA Grant Fund

Program allotted additional $30 million, eligibility expanded

Governor Ralph Northam today announced that Rebuild VA, a grant program to help small businesses and nonprofit organizations affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, will expand eligibility criteria and increase the amount of grant money businesses receive.

Rebuild VA launched in August with $70 million from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Governor Northam is directing an additional $30 million to support the expansion of the program. Businesses with less than $10 million in gross revenue or fewer than 250 employees will be eligible under the new criteria, and the maximum grant award will increase from $10,000 to $100,000.

“We started Rebuild VA to help small businesses and nonprofit organizations navigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Governor Northam. “These changes to the program will ensure that we can provide additional financial assistance to even more Virginians so they can weather this public health crisis and emerge stronger.”

Rebuild VA will now be open to all types of Virginia small businesses that meet size and other eligibility requirements, from restaurants and summer camps, to farmers and retail shops. Businesses that previously received a Rebuild VA grant will receive a second award correlated with the updated guidelines.

Rebuild VA is administered by the Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity (SBSD) in partnership with the Department of Housing and Community Development and the Virginia Tourism Corporation, and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. Eligible businesses and nonprofits must demonstrate that their normal operations were limited by Governor Northam’s Executive Orders Fifty-Three or Fifty-Five, or that they were directly impacted by the closure of such businesses. In September, the program expanded eligibility to supply chain partners of businesses whose normal operations were impacted by the pandemic.

Rebuild VA funding may be utilized for the following eligible expenses:
Payroll support, including paid sick, medical, or family leave, and costs related to the continuation of group health care benefits during those periods of leave;
Employee salaries;
Mortgage payments, rent, and utilities;
Principal and interest payments for any business loans from national or state-chartered banking, savings and loan institutions, or credit unions, that were incurred before or during the emergency;
Eligible personal protective equipment, cleaning and disinfecting materials, or other working capital needed to address COVID-19 response.

For additional information about Rebuild VA and how to submit an application, please visit governor.virginia.gov/RebuildVA.

Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce President's Message: Don't Be Afraid to Quit

Growing up we have heard this reference repeatedly from parents, coaches, friends, teachers, and others: "Don't be a quitter!" "Quitting is for losers!"

As we start our planning for 2021, quitting may actually be a winning strategy. We have been operating in an alternate reality during 2020. Everything we had planned, everything we have normally done year after year has completely gone out the window.

The pandemic has been a crisis, but it brings opportunity for those willing to get creative. It's time to reimagine, redesign, relaunch. Take a look at the things you have normally done, always done, done just because, and truly ask, "Why?" Is it effective? Is it financially successful? Does it align with your mission? Does it bring value to you and your customers? If not, it may be time to quit!

Many of us are looking forward, planning for 2021. Turn everything on an angle and look at it differently. Get rid of the fluff. Consider whether it's time to kill some of the sacred cows - those events and activities that pop up every year because that's the way it has always been, because no one dares touch it.

What is most exciting about looking ahead, is the chance to wipe the slate clean and innovate. We don't know where the COVID finish line is, but that doesn't mean we can't be winners. --
Suzanne Corr, BACC President/CEO.

Shop Local; Portage County Business Council Supports Local Holiday Shopping

In Portage County, 83% of businesses have nineteen or fewer employees. Small businesses are central in central Wisconsin and the entrepreneurial spirit is strong. With Small Business Saturday right around the corner, the Portage County Business Council (PCBC) is putting a special emphasis on local shopping and supporting small business. PCBC supports businesses of any size but recognizes that in this pandemic small, local businesses need an extra boost.

PCBC will be launching our annual Elf on the Shelf “Jolly Biz the Membership Elf” promotion on November 1st. We had 36 spots to fill but with an overwhelming response from member businesses, we decided to offer the promotion on weekends and over Thanksgiving to allow greater participation for a total of 53 member businesses! Jolly will be appearing on our Facebook page daily from November 1st through December 23rd. Correctly guess his location and win a prize donated by that business. This contest is a popular and lighthearted way for businesses to gain extra recognition on PCBC’s social media channels.

PCBC is also partnering with 88.5 FM The Family to promote our gift certificate program. With many businesses not having holiday parties and the desire to promote shopping local, anyone can come to the PCBC office or most area banks to buy Portage County gift certificates of various denominations. PCBC does this as a service to local businesses and we make no profit off of their sale. Listen to 88.5 FM to learn more.

“We are a thriving entrepreneurial community with lots of support for our businesses and now more than ever we need to give back to them. Many of these same businesses support your child’s sport or school or non-profit (including PCBC), so get out in-person or online and support them.” shared Todd Kuckkahn, Portage County Business Council Executive Director.

2020 Best Places to Work in Kentucky Rankings Announced

Edward Jones, Houchens Insurance Group and MiddleGround Capital take top honors

Frankfort, Ky. (September 9, 2020) – Edward Jones, Houchens Insurance Group and MiddleGround Capital were ranked the 2020 Best Places to Work in Kentucky by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM).

During the 16th Annual Best Places to Work in Kentucky virtual awards ceremony, presented by ClearPath Mutual Insurance Company, nearly 2,000 joined the online celebration of the 100 Kentucky companies who were recognized for their commitment to focus, measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence.

The list of companies who made the 2020 list was announced in January. Then in March the COVID19 pandemic changed our world. With social distancing becoming our new norm and affecting the way we interact with each other, the awards ceremony shifted to a virtual celebration of our winners and their rankings. The 100 winning companies participated in a comprehensive survey process and were then ranked according to those results. The list consists of three categories: small companies of 15-149 employees, medium companies of 150-499 employees and large companies consisting of more than 500 employees (categories based on number of U.S. employees, only Kentucky employees surveyed).

Edward Jones, the top winner in the large category, offers associates flexible, family-friendly workplaces and gratifying work helping clients in neighborhoods where they live and work. Financial advisors and branch office administrator teams who serve clients well earn the firm’s highest honors. Edward Jones has made the list for 15 years and last year was ranked first in the large category.

Houchens Insurance Group, the top winner in the medium category, is a family of agencies, taking the success of each individual agency and utilizing their expertise to create the power of HIG, directly impacting the clients they serve. Houchens Insurance Group was ranked third in the medium category last year and has made the list seven years.

MiddleGround Capital, the top winner in the small category is a private equity firm, which makes it a priority to invest in its people as equally as its companies. Doing so has earned respect, loyalty, and dedication of its employees who feel challenged yet valued every day. MiddleGround Capital has made the list for the first time.

Now in its 16th year, the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program has recognized a combined 308 unique Kentucky companies with 213 of those making the list more than once. Special recognition to the two companies that have made the list for all 16 years – Dean Dorton and KORT Physical Therapy - The Best in Rehab.

The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) state council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce are proud to host the Best Places initiative, as both organizations support the value of workplace excellence as a key component in moving Kentucky forward.

“HR professionals are the CEO's strategic partner in creating an adaptive advantage for Kentucky's employers. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program recognizes those employers who set an exemplary standard of excellence for both employee engagement and business success,” said KYSHRM Chair, Patrick Smith, SHRM-CP, PHR.

According to Kentucky Chamber President and CEO, Ashli Watts, “In order to help Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able to educate and employ current Kentuckians, while also creating workplaces that attract talent from outside of the state. The Best Places program does just that.”

Maysville-Mason County Area Chamber welcomes new chamber director Kaci Compton

Interim Maysville-Mason County Area Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Hendrickson likened Thursday’s chamber membership meeting as a “State of the Union Address” for the city and county.

The chamber hosted the annual community update from Maysville Mayor Charles Cotterill and Mason County Judge-Executive Joe Pfeffer at the Maysville Rotary Clubhouse. Social distancing protocols were in place.

Hendrickson opened the event by welcoming new chamber Director Kaci Compton. Acknowledging that former director Vicki Steigleder is a hard act to follow, he said he believes the committee charged with selecting a new director picked the right person to move the chamber forward.

Compton said she and her family recently relocated to Maysville and “I am thrilled to be here.” She said the experience has been wonderful so far and she has enjoyed what she called “Southern hospitality at its finest.” Read more: The Ledger Independent

First Round of City of Plymouth’s & PEDC’s COVID-19 Small Business Financial Support Program a Success – Second Round Now Open

In July, the City of Plymouth and the Plymouth Economic Development Corporation (“PEDC”) launched their COVID-19 Small Business Financial Support Program. The program, which makes available grants and/or loans to eligible companies doing business in the city and its 2-mile zoning jurisdiction who have been negatively impacted by the Coronavirus, just successfully completed its first funding round.

The loan committee considered numerous applications as part of round one. PEDC President Jack Davis stated that “the members of the loan committee worked hard in reviewing the applications and ultimately awarded $2,500 grants to 8 businesses, and $10,000 loans to 3 businesses.” Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter noted that “the businesses assisted by the program currently employ a total of 41 people and anticipate growth to 53 employees within the next 6 months.” “We were pleased to do a small part to help these local companies navigate the pandemic and we look forward to helping more businesses in the second funding round,” the Mayor also stated.

Second round applications are available for download on the City of Plymouth’s webpage (www.plymouthin.com) or hard copies may be picked up at the Mayor’s office or at the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce. A hard copy of completed applications must be submitted at the Mayor’s Office by October 2, 2020. At that time, the loan committee will review all grant/loan applications and advise applicants of funding decisions. At this time, just $20,000 in program funding remains available for distribution. Additional tax deductible donations to the program are being accepted. Those interested in contributing are encouraged to contact the Mayor’s Office or Jack Davis directly.

The COVID-19 Small Business Financial Support Program is targeted toward for-profit businesses of 25 employees or less in the following fields: Retail, Personal Services, Food and Beverage/Hospitality, Health Care/Social Services, Professional Services, Construction/Remodeling, Finance/Insurance, Manufacturing, Real estate/Rental, Professional/Scientific/Technical, and Arts/Entertainment/Recreation. The program includes a one-time $2,500 “Getting Back Grant” or a $3,000-$10,000 “Here to Stay Loan” at 0% interest over a term of up to 4 years, with the first payment deferred for 6 months after the loan origination.

APPLETON, Wis. (August 19, 2020) – The Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce is transitioning their workforce attraction program, Fox Cities Days, to a virtual format in response to COVID -19. Fox Cities Days was created in 2019 to provide structured regional recruiting events where area businesses could collectively bring the Fox Cities experience to college students throughout the Midwest. The program was developed in response to growing talent shortages in engineering, computer science and healthcare. The program aims to put Fox Cities businesses first in line with college students seeking early career placements, and to showcase a wide variety of career opportunities, as well as the region as a great place to live, work and play.

The first virtual event will take place at Michigan Tech in Houghton, Michigan, along with Finlandia University, targeting students in engineering, computer science and healthcare. This event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., CST. Employers will utilize virtual platforms to provide students with group informational sessions and one-on-one chats. Students can learn about the Fox Cities region and immediate and future career opportunities available with designated employers.

The second Fox Cities Days event of 2020 is scheduled for Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan on Thursday, October 15, 2020. The event will target students in healthcare, construction management, computer science and engineering.  Employers will setup shop using virtual platforms from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., CST. Students will sign up for group and individual sessions with participating employers.

“We are here to support regional employers and help them stay top of mind with college students during the pandemic. The safest way to do that is to transition to a virtual format,” shared Amy Andersen, Director of Talent and K-16 Relations at the Fox Cities Chamber. “We need to import talent to meet workforce demands and COVID-19 has created an opportunity for all of us to learn virtual methods of recruitment delivery which can increase our outreach and ability to secure top talent to the area.”

Please contact Fox Cities Chamber Director of Talent and K-16 Relations, Amy Andersen, to register your organization for these talent recruitment events. The cost for each event is $350 for Fox Cities Chamber members and $450 for non-members.

7 Ways Hearing People Can Better Include Deaf Communities in Our Communication (via the Macomb County Chamber)

By: Global Interpreting Services

Between lagging video conferences, dead batteries mid-call, and 6-foot conversations through masks, we’ve all felt the struggle to communicate well over the past several months. But as the world slowly allows for us to talk, shop, socialize and be understood the way we are used to, there are still many in our community who won’t automatically be granted that same widespread access to effective communication. For Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, the hearing-centered world we live in presents a few more challenges in regular, day-to-day communication. Global Interpreting Services, a locally based interpreting, and translation service, shares these easy ways hearing individuals can make a huge impact on the accessibility of effective communication for the Deaf Community in our area.

Sault Area Chamber: Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance Survey

We need your help with an important survey from the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance. The Alliance is actively advocating to the Administration that bars and restaurants in Northern Michigan be given a bit more flexibility in operation, which is obviously especially important with colder weather upon us limiting outdoor capacity. Towards that end, they are trying to better understand the impacts to the industry at the moment.

Vicksburg Forest Products Expanding In Vicksburg, Creating 60 Jobs

Southern Yellow Pine manufacturer Vicksburg Forest Products, LLC is expanding its lumber mill operations in Vicksburg. The project is a $40 million corporate investment and will create 60 jobs.

“With nearly 20 million acres of forestland in Mississippi, our state is positioned for continued growth in the agribusiness sector, as evidenced by Vicksburg Forest Products’ significant expansion just over two years after opening its doors,” Gov. Tate Reeves said. “I appreciate the leadership at Vicksburg Forest Products for its commitment to doing business in Warren County and building stronger communities through job creation.”

In 2018, Vicksburg Forest Products, which is headquartered in Jackson, purchased the Vicksburg sawmill. The facility underwent a large-scale transformation and is currently producing approximately 75 million board feet of Southern Yellow Pine lumber on an annual basis. Post expansion, Vicksburg Forest Products will be capable of producing 180 million board feet of lumber per year, consisting of a diverse product mix to better serve customers. The upgraded mill will be purchasing approximately 800,000 tons of timber annually from landowners in the surrounding areas. The company has signed a turnkey contract with a leading equipment provider, and construction is scheduled to begin in October and will be complete next summer.

“We look forward to working with the local economic community and the state of Mississippi to support further investment in our facility and the surrounding area,” said Vicksburg Forest Products Manager Billy Van Devender. “We are excited about the long-term prospects of our Vicksburg operations.”

The Mississippi Development Authority is providing assistance for infrastructure improvements, building improvements, rail improvements, and road construction. The city of Vicksburg also is providing assistance with infrastructure projects.

“Mississippi has plentiful natural resources that provide companies in the agribusiness industry, such as Vicksburg Forest Products, with ample opportunities to exceed their goals and maintain a strong competitive edge in today’s dynamic economy,” said MDA Interim Director John Rounsaville. “We are proud to partner with the Vicksburg Forest Products team, the Vicksburg-Warren Economic Development Partnership and the city of Vicksburg as dozens of new job opportunities are being created for the people of Vicksburg and Warren County.”

Good morning #ChamberWorld! It's going to be a great day!

U.S. Chamber of Commerce: Uniform Guidance—Not Strict Regulations—Will Help Get the Economy Back to Health

When it comes to reopening America’s economy there is no precedent or guidebook, but that hasn’t stopped some, including in Congress, from advocating that we should start by writing a regulatory rulebook to be enforced by bureaucrats.

One can imagine inspectors with tape measurers determining whether desks are three inches too close (And where do you measure from by the way: the edge of the desk or the chair?).

America’s employers are responding to this crisis as they normally do by finding innovative ways to protect and serve their employees and customers. A one-size-fits-all regulatory approach will keep them from implementing solutions that best fit their unique workplace. And that is the last thing they need.

They could also do without a patchwork of differing guidance from federal, state, and local officials covering everything from face mask requirements to minimum distancing requirements, to staggered work times, to health surveillance.

Businesses should reopen based on local conditions, but as much as possible public health guidance around best practices shouldn’t vary significantly from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. As one national employer told us last week, they are currently tracking over 2,000 jurisdictions, many with small twists on workplace guidance. This doesn’t improve public health, instill confidence, or assist in the reopening.

That is why today, the Chamber sent a letter in partnership with the Council of State Chambers to the President, governors, mayors and county officials asking for guidance over regulations, and to the maximum extent, practicable uniformity in guidance.

Restart Kentucky: A Responsible Plan for Returning to Work

ALL BUSINESSES AND INDIVIDUALS SHOULD BE PREPARED WITH MASKS AND TEMPERATURE CHECKS FOR START OF REOPENING MAY 11, BESHEAR SAYS

As the first phase of reopening many healthcare entities began on Monday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said he expects to see some broader reopening in other industries beginning May 11. This will, however, require every Kentuckian to wear a mask outside their home and in their place of work.

Phase one for healthcare facilities includes fever and COVID-19 screenings before entering, new check-in procedures (including call ahead registration, waiting in the car rather than a waiting room, and physical barriers in the offices), enhanced sanitizing of facilities, and an expectation that all people are masked to prevent any spread. View details of all phases of healthcare reopening with dates here.

Beshear said the plan to begin reopening other industries beginning on May 11 will be contingent upon the results of this first test of reopening.

The governor stated at that time the state will be asking that every person in every business wear a mask and temperature checks will be required for employees. This includes businesses that begin to reopen in May and any essential business that has remained open over the last six weeks. He noted work environments can’t be the same when the state sees a return to work and encouraged businesses to take steps like spreading out employees and the continued use of telework as much as possible.

More About May 11th Guidlines Here

From the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board and President/CEO

Dear members, partners, colleagues and friends,

We have been teleworking for over six weeks now and things are still uncertain. We know that these are very challenging times for all. The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is working closely with local government, business and community partners to determine how best we can support our local workforce and businesses. While it appears that we are successfully flattening the curve, it is imperative that the business community continue to utilize strategies to protect the health of our workforce. To assist with your efforts, we have been promulgating a one-stop resource newsletter five days a week. We will, starting this week, publish three a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This resource will continue to be blasted to our membership and posted on our social media pages and will include important news updates and any other relevant and helpful information that comes to our attention. In keeping with the CDC recommendation to promote social distancing and in view of the Governor's recent Executive Order, the Chamber has cancelled all in-person events until further notice and the staff will continue teleworking until June 10th or at a time in keeping with State recommendations or Executive Orders. If you need to contact the Chamber staff, please use the following emails: bob.mckenna@vpcc.org or sjohnson@vpcc.org. Thank you.

WMC: Wisconsin's chamber of commerce is calling for opening businesses starting May 4.

That's three weeks sooner than is called for under Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' stay-at-home order designed to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce released its plan Friday.

“The focus is on getting the workplace and getting the economy back moving again,” said state Senator Chris Kapenga, who supports the ‘Back in Business’ plan.

Scott Manley, the Executive Vice President of Government Relations for Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, says the plan focuses on safely reopening businesses and prioritizing public health.

“We think that every business would be allowed to open safely under this model,” said Manley.

The plan requires businesses to input information about the business, such as location and industry type.

“The thought with this approach is that there’s enough safeguards built into the algorithm that all businesses would be able to open safely as long as they comply with the mitigation steps,” Manley explained.

From there, the algorithm calculates a risk score of either minimal, moderate, or substantial.

Once a business is classified with a certain risk level, there is a number of precautions businesses would be required to take to stay open.

Those requirements range from social distancing customers to providing personal protective equipment for employees.

The system also takes medical data from the Department of Health Services to examine a locations hospital capacity and infection rate.

“The overall goal is to ensure that the healthcare system has the ability to treat every sick person in a timely manner,” said Kapenga. “The model is built to ensure that happens.”

Bill Fonti, the CEO of Ashley Furniture Home Store and Furniture and Appliance Mart, says he’s willing to do whatever it takes to reopen his stores.

“We have to get Wisconsin back to work here soon in the safest possible manner,” said Fonti. “I hate to see what could happen.”

Fonti says he’s had to close his stores and layoff employees, which worries him for the future of retail.

New Berlin Chamber readies Farmers Market kick-off for May 2nd

In a ray of hope to get back some feeling of normalcy, we are making preparations to kick off the 2020 season of our New Berlin Farmers Market! The has been deemed an essential
business and will open this Saturday May 2, at 8 am and run until Noon. The market will be held every Saturday through the end of October.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic new rules and guidelines will be instituted for our vendors and customers alike. Vendor booths will spread farther apart and customers will not be allowed to handle or package the food. We will mark the pavement in front of each booth at six foot increments to ensure adequate social distancing guidelines and signage at the market will list the appropriate guidelines.

I would like to thank Mayor Ament and city staff for their time and cooperation in helping us prepare for the opening under these unique conditions. We are all working to ensure the health of our vendors and customers by adhering to guidelines and recommendations presented by the state and government and health officials.

Our vendors are eager to get the new season started.

While some won't have produce for a few weeks, a slightly smaller initial market will provide a soft opening allowing us to refine and adjust our new procedures.

Our goal is to provide the best shopper and vendor experience we can during these unusual times. Please stop out to visit the market at 15055 W National Avenue in the New Berlin City Center
Located near the corner of National Avenue and Michelle Witmer Drive.
