2020 Best Places to Work in Kentucky Rankings Announced

Edward Jones, Houchens Insurance Group and MiddleGround Capital take top honors

Frankfort, Ky. (September 9, 2020) – Edward Jones, Houchens Insurance Group and MiddleGround Capital were ranked the 2020 Best Places to Work in Kentucky by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM).

During the 16th Annual Best Places to Work in Kentucky virtual awards ceremony, presented by ClearPath Mutual Insurance Company, nearly 2,000 joined the online celebration of the 100 Kentucky companies who were recognized for their commitment to focus, measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence.

The list of companies who made the 2020 list was announced in January. Then in March the COVID19 pandemic changed our world. With social distancing becoming our new norm and affecting the way we interact with each other, the awards ceremony shifted to a virtual celebration of our winners and their rankings. The 100 winning companies participated in a comprehensive survey process and were then ranked according to those results. The list consists of three categories: small companies of 15-149 employees, medium companies of 150-499 employees and large companies consisting of more than 500 employees (categories based on number of U.S. employees, only Kentucky employees surveyed).

Edward Jones, the top winner in the large category, offers associates flexible, family-friendly workplaces and gratifying work helping clients in neighborhoods where they live and work. Financial advisors and branch office administrator teams who serve clients well earn the firm’s highest honors. Edward Jones has made the list for 15 years and last year was ranked first in the large category.

Houchens Insurance Group, the top winner in the medium category, is a family of agencies, taking the success of each individual agency and utilizing their expertise to create the power of HIG, directly impacting the clients they serve. Houchens Insurance Group was ranked third in the medium category last year and has made the list seven years.

MiddleGround Capital, the top winner in the small category is a private equity firm, which makes it a priority to invest in its people as equally as its companies. Doing so has earned respect, loyalty, and dedication of its employees who feel challenged yet valued every day. MiddleGround Capital has made the list for the first time.

Now in its 16th year, the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program has recognized a combined 308 unique Kentucky companies with 213 of those making the list more than once. Special recognition to the two companies that have made the list for all 16 years – Dean Dorton and KORT Physical Therapy - The Best in Rehab.

The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) state council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce are proud to host the Best Places initiative, as both organizations support the value of workplace excellence as a key component in moving Kentucky forward.

“HR professionals are the CEO's strategic partner in creating an adaptive advantage for Kentucky's employers. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program recognizes those employers who set an exemplary standard of excellence for both employee engagement and business success,” said KYSHRM Chair, Patrick Smith, SHRM-CP, PHR.

According to Kentucky Chamber President and CEO, Ashli Watts, “In order to help Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able to educate and employ current Kentuckians, while also creating workplaces that attract talent from outside of the state. The Best Places program does just that.”

Maysville-Mason County Area Chamber welcomes new chamber director Kaci Compton

Interim Maysville-Mason County Area Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Hendrickson likened Thursday’s chamber membership meeting as a “State of the Union Address” for the city and county.

The chamber hosted the annual community update from Maysville Mayor Charles Cotterill and Mason County Judge-Executive Joe Pfeffer at the Maysville Rotary Clubhouse. Social distancing protocols were in place.

Hendrickson opened the event by welcoming new chamber Director Kaci Compton. Acknowledging that former director Vicki Steigleder is a hard act to follow, he said he believes the committee charged with selecting a new director picked the right person to move the chamber forward.

Compton said she and her family recently relocated to Maysville and “I am thrilled to be here.” She said the experience has been wonderful so far and she has enjoyed what she called “Southern hospitality at its finest.” Read more: The Ledger Independent

First Round of City of Plymouth’s & PEDC’s COVID-19 Small Business Financial Support Program a Success – Second Round Now Open

In July, the City of Plymouth and the Plymouth Economic Development Corporation (“PEDC”) launched their COVID-19 Small Business Financial Support Program. The program, which makes available grants and/or loans to eligible companies doing business in the city and its 2-mile zoning jurisdiction who have been negatively impacted by the Coronavirus, just successfully completed its first funding round.

The loan committee considered numerous applications as part of round one. PEDC President Jack Davis stated that “the members of the loan committee worked hard in reviewing the applications and ultimately awarded $2,500 grants to 8 businesses, and $10,000 loans to 3 businesses.” Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter noted that “the businesses assisted by the program currently employ a total of 41 people and anticipate growth to 53 employees within the next 6 months.” “We were pleased to do a small part to help these local companies navigate the pandemic and we look forward to helping more businesses in the second funding round,” the Mayor also stated.

Second round applications are available for download on the City of Plymouth’s webpage (www.plymouthin.com) or hard copies may be picked up at the Mayor’s office or at the Plymouth Chamber of Commerce. A hard copy of completed applications must be submitted at the Mayor’s Office by October 2, 2020. At that time, the loan committee will review all grant/loan applications and advise applicants of funding decisions. At this time, just $20,000 in program funding remains available for distribution. Additional tax deductible donations to the program are being accepted. Those interested in contributing are encouraged to contact the Mayor’s Office or Jack Davis directly.

The COVID-19 Small Business Financial Support Program is targeted toward for-profit businesses of 25 employees or less in the following fields: Retail, Personal Services, Food and Beverage/Hospitality, Health Care/Social Services, Professional Services, Construction/Remodeling, Finance/Insurance, Manufacturing, Real estate/Rental, Professional/Scientific/Technical, and Arts/Entertainment/Recreation. The program includes a one-time $2,500 “Getting Back Grant” or a $3,000-$10,000 “Here to Stay Loan” at 0% interest over a term of up to 4 years, with the first payment deferred for 6 months after the loan origination.

Fox Cities Chamber Hosts VIRTUAL Regional Recruitment Events for Businesses
Fox Cities Days provides virtual opportunities to connect with future workforce

APPLETON, Wis. (August 19, 2020) – The Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce is transitioning their workforce attraction program, Fox Cities Days, to a virtual format in response to COVID -19. Fox Cities Days was created in 2019 to provide structured regional recruiting events where area businesses could collectively bring the Fox Cities experience to college students throughout the Midwest. The program was developed in response to growing talent shortages in engineering, computer science and healthcare. The program aims to put Fox Cities businesses first in line with college students seeking early career placements, and to showcase a wide variety of career opportunities, as well as the region as a great place to live, work and play.

The first virtual event will take place at Michigan Tech in Houghton, Michigan, along with Finlandia University, targeting students in engineering, computer science and healthcare. This event is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., CST. Employers will utilize virtual platforms to provide students with group informational sessions and one-on-one chats. Students can learn about the Fox Cities region and immediate and future career opportunities available with designated employers.

The second Fox Cities Days event of 2020 is scheduled for Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan on Thursday, October 15, 2020. The event will target students in healthcare, construction management, computer science and engineering.  Employers will setup shop using virtual platforms from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., CST. Students will sign up for group and individual sessions with participating employers.

“We are here to support regional employers and help them stay top of mind with college students during the pandemic. The safest way to do that is to transition to a virtual format,” shared Amy Andersen, Director of Talent and K-16 Relations at the Fox Cities Chamber. “We need to import talent to meet workforce demands and COVID-19 has created an opportunity for all of us to learn virtual methods of recruitment delivery which can increase our outreach and ability to secure top talent to the area.”

Please contact Fox Cities Chamber Director of Talent and K-16 Relations, Amy Andersen, to register your organization for these talent recruitment events. The cost for each event is $350 for Fox Cities Chamber members and $450 for non-members.

7 Ways Hearing People Can Better Include Deaf Communities in Our Communication (via the Macomb County Chamber)

By: Global Interpreting Services

Between lagging video conferences, dead batteries mid-call, and 6-foot conversations through masks, we’ve all felt the struggle to communicate well over the past several months. But as the world slowly allows for us to talk, shop, socialize and be understood the way we are used to, there are still many in our community who won’t automatically be granted that same widespread access to effective communication. For Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, the hearing-centered world we live in presents a few more challenges in regular, day-to-day communication. Global Interpreting Services, a locally based interpreting, and translation service, shares these easy ways hearing individuals can make a huge impact on the accessibility of effective communication for the Deaf Community in our area.

Sault Area Chamber: Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance Survey

We need your help with an important survey from the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance. The Alliance is actively advocating to the Administration that bars and restaurants in Northern Michigan be given a bit more flexibility in operation, which is obviously especially important with colder weather upon us limiting outdoor capacity. Towards that end, they are trying to better understand the impacts to the industry at the moment.

Vicksburg Forest Products Expanding In Vicksburg, Creating 60 Jobs

Southern Yellow Pine manufacturer Vicksburg Forest Products, LLC is expanding its lumber mill operations in Vicksburg. The project is a $40 million corporate investment and will create 60 jobs.

“With nearly 20 million acres of forestland in Mississippi, our state is positioned for continued growth in the agribusiness sector, as evidenced by Vicksburg Forest Products’ significant expansion just over two years after opening its doors,” Gov. Tate Reeves said. “I appreciate the leadership at Vicksburg Forest Products for its commitment to doing business in Warren County and building stronger communities through job creation.”

In 2018, Vicksburg Forest Products, which is headquartered in Jackson, purchased the Vicksburg sawmill. The facility underwent a large-scale transformation and is currently producing approximately 75 million board feet of Southern Yellow Pine lumber on an annual basis. Post expansion, Vicksburg Forest Products will be capable of producing 180 million board feet of lumber per year, consisting of a diverse product mix to better serve customers. The upgraded mill will be purchasing approximately 800,000 tons of timber annually from landowners in the surrounding areas. The company has signed a turnkey contract with a leading equipment provider, and construction is scheduled to begin in October and will be complete next summer.

“We look forward to working with the local economic community and the state of Mississippi to support further investment in our facility and the surrounding area,” said Vicksburg Forest Products Manager Billy Van Devender. “We are excited about the long-term prospects of our Vicksburg operations.”

The Mississippi Development Authority is providing assistance for infrastructure improvements, building improvements, rail improvements, and road construction. The city of Vicksburg also is providing assistance with infrastructure projects.

“Mississippi has plentiful natural resources that provide companies in the agribusiness industry, such as Vicksburg Forest Products, with ample opportunities to exceed their goals and maintain a strong competitive edge in today’s dynamic economy,” said MDA Interim Director John Rounsaville. “We are proud to partner with the Vicksburg Forest Products team, the Vicksburg-Warren Economic Development Partnership and the city of Vicksburg as dozens of new job opportunities are being created for the people of Vicksburg and Warren County.”

Start the Recovery! Geneva Chamber Helping the Businesses

Geneva Chamber of Commerce has been assisting our members and Geneva businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic in a variety of ways.

Keeping our members informed through daily emails that contained updates on available resources including loans, passing of legislation, webinars to assist them and keeping them abreast of what the Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO), U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Illinois Chamber of Commerce has been doing on their behalf during the pandemic.

The Geneva Chamber asked members to provide assorted items that would fit into one of four themed boxes.  These boxes were sold via our website and those members were then paid 100% of the items cost.  The boxes sold out in less than a week.

“This was a creative way to help our members, not only put their name in front of new customers, but also provide them with some financial positivity,” said Geneva Chamber of Commerce President Paula Schmidt.  “The response from the businesses and the public was overwhelming.  We were happy to further our partnership with our Geneva Chamber members.”

Entering Phase 3 posed some issues for those without outdoor dining space or a way to enclose customers.  The Geneva Chamber was able to offer Art History Brewing, 649 W. State St.; Cafe & Barr, 407 S. Third St.; Niche, 14 S. Third St. and Riganato, 700 E. State St. our fencing that we use for Swedish Days Craft Beer tent and Festival of the Vine.

“Going forward, we will continue to work with the City of Geneva on being a resource and asset for our members and helping the Geneva business community succeed, using our creativity to help in whatever ways we are able,” said Geneva Chamber of Commerce Communications Manager, Laura Rush.

You don’t want to give up any time at the end of the year but the real reason to get moving (or relaxing) is that we all need to get away from our work. It will make us better when we return.

Vitalant has good news for potential donors!

Effective June 1, Vitalant will begin testing all successful blood donations for antibodies to SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

· It is strongly recommended that appointments are made prior to the drive date.

Message from Indy Chamber's Michael Huber: Statement in Response to Recent Protests

May 30, 2020

The following statement was released by Indy Chamber President and CEO Michael Huber in response to recent protests:

“The opportunity to succeed is central to the growth of Indianapolis, and significant barriers including systemic racism threaten this opportunity. We recognize the longstanding anger and frustration that has been building in our city and our nation in response to violent acts against communities of color, and we support peaceful protests that address this injustice and call for change. When reactions turn violent, however, they not only detract from this call, they undermine the important message of the protests, and shift the focus to destruction and injury. Violent acts against fellow citizens and local businesses must not continue.

Indianapolis has proven throughout its history that in challenging times, we embrace our differences and come together to strengthen the ties between our friends and neighbors. Meaningful change must occur to build a truly inclusive economy. We can and will find peaceful resolution, but only if we work together.”

Chamber Coalition Letter on Liability Relief Legislation

Wednesday, May 20, 2020 - 12:00pm

TO THE MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS:

The undersigned chambers of commerce urge Congress to pass timely, temporary and targeted liability relief legislation to provide businesses a safe harbor from unwarranted lawsuits that, left unchecked, will endanger the fight against the pandemic and undermine the safe and orderly return to work for millions of Americans.
From distillers who switched to producing hand sanitizers, to manufacturers that transformed their operations to construct personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilators, to front line medical professionals treating the afflicted, to pharmaceutical companies that are expediting research into cures, American businesses have rallied to fight the pandemic. During the stay-at-home orders, essential businesses have remained open and innovated in ways that permitted them to continue to provide critical services and supplies. Now millions of other businesses are in the process of reopening, desiring to do so in a safe manner that protects their employees and customers.
This is an unprecedented situation and despite employers’ best efforts to comply with public health guidance, many are concerned that they will be forced to defend themselves against a wave of lawsuits. Their concern is driven by the fact that each day brings news of more lawsuits that have already been filed. That is why Congress should provide a safe harbor that holds truly bad actors accountable, but that protects those employers who are working to follow public health guidance.  Specifically, temporary protections should remain in place for the duration of the pandemic crisis and response that cover:
  • Businesses that work to follow government guidelines against COVID-19 exposure claims.
  • Healthcare providers and facilities on the front lines of the COVID-19 response.
  • Manufacturers that repurposed production and distribution to provide PPE, sanitizers, and other needed countermeasures.
  • Companies that have donated their stock of supplies to hospitals and medical professionals.
  • Public companies that could face securities lawsuits, including those driven largely on stock price drops resulting from the global pandemic under the spurious assertion that management failed to warn investors.
To ensure that we continue to wage war against the pandemic while also safely returning Americans to work, Congress must act without delay.

Sincerely,

Paducah Chamber Contributes to Small Business Relief Fund

The Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recently approved a contribution of $5,000 to the city’s Small Business Relief Fund. “Small businesses make up over 80% of our total membership,” said Chad Beyer, Chairman of the Chamber Board. “The Chamber is committed to serving the businesses of this community and this is a way for us to show our support to them. We are proud to be a part of this effort and to partner with other community members to provide this financial assistance.”
Beyer said the Chamber usually celebrates the month of May as Small Business Month with a kick off at the May Power in Partnership breakfast and other seminars and special events. With COVID-19 the Chamber will not be having any in-person group meetings or events in May. “We are proud to be a part of this effort to lift up our small businesses and continue to recognize them through this contribution,” he added.
These funds will be matched by the city adding an additional $10,000 overall for the fund for the next round of grants to be distributed.
“The Chamber is our community’s number one advocate for small business,” said Mayor Brandi Harless.  “Thank you for your generosity and support of our efforts to help small businesses push through these tough times. We will get through this if we work together.”
The Small Business Relief Fund is a partnership of the City of Paducah, West Kentucky Technical and Community College and the Community Foundation of West Kentucky.  To donate to the Small Business Relief Fund, go to the Community Foundation’s website at cfwestky.org, call 270-442-8622 or mail to the Community Foundation, P.O. Aurora Regional Chamber: From the President & CEO

I’m confident I speak for all of us when I say that the last several months are a time none of us will ever forget – a global pandemic, mandated shutdowns, record rainfalls and flooding, and most recently, civil unrest in our community. Earlier this week, a reporter asked me if I thought businesses would recover from all this. I want to share with you what I told her.

Aurora is a community with resiliency like I’ve never seen before – and I come from a community that is no stranger to picking itself back up off the ground and pulling together. Our businesses, all of YOU, are resilient. You’ve faced great challenges in the past and chosen to come together. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, you’ve cared for each other and your teams, innovated, and been creative with your businesses. Now in the face of physical damage to businesses, you’re doing it again already.

On Monday, I got to witness an outpouring of community support that many communities would not have seen in the same situation. Residents and business owners poured into the downtown in the early hours of the morning with brooms and buckets in hand to literally pick these businesses up off the ground. Across the city, people were packing up lumber and supplies and taking it to the nearest impacted business to start helping. Even in the days after, messages of solidarity and support are showing up in art across these business fronts and conversations about the root of these problems are being led by conscientious business owners.

Reading this, you might see then why I didn’t hesitate a second to tell a reporter that our business community would get through this. That you will get through all of it. And that I’m confident, the most incredible part, is that you’ll get through it together. We’ll get through this together. Know that at the chamber – our staff, board, volunteers, and your fellow members – we’re here for your, too. Please reach out in these difficult times and know that we’re reaching out to you.

We will rise #OneAurora.
