Oxford-Lafayette County chamber: 75th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee: a Sparkling Night at the Colonel’s Quarters at Castle Hill

The Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce celebrated Thursday night its 75th anniversary at the Colonel’s Quarters at Castle Hill, and the night featured the best of Oxford from guests to fine dining. The Colonel’s Quarters rose to the extravagant affair as it revealed its newly-constructed ballroom adorned with shimmering chandeliers as the guests enjoyed the Memphis Bouffants’ sass. The chamber’s inaugural Chef Shuffle featured many Oxford restaurants from Casa Mexicana to McEwen’s to baklava from Culin-Arts. Long dresses and tuxedos looked radiant in the setting sun at the Colonel’s Quarters. Many, many pictures: Hotty Toddy

U.S. Chamber Quarterly Special Edition: President’s Corner

Welcome to the special edition of U.S. Chamber Quarterly, produced in conjunction with the 2015 America's Small Business Summit. These are interesting and challenging times for all businesses, and new research by analysts at Gallup uncovers some troubling trends about entrepreneurship in America. For the first time in 35 years, more American businesses are being shuttered than started. The United States has slipped to 12th place among developed nations for business creation.
It's tempting to be discouraged by such grim statistics. But at the U.S. Chamber we know that across the country small businesses of every kind--from scrappy startups to multigenerational Main Street fixtures--are overcoming obstacles and sometimes long odds to survive and thrive in a challenging environment. They are pushing back against headwinds like higher taxes, stricter regulations, and greater uncertainty, and they are emerging stronger than ever--putting people to work and making positive contributions to their economies and communities.
The DREAM BIG Small Business of the Year Awards program, sponsored by Sam's Club, recognizes those businesses and celebrates their accomplishments. The Blue Ribbon Award winners and the regional finalists spotlighted over the next week are proof that the American Dream is indeed alive and well. They also provide an example and an inspiration that others may need to turn a struggling business around or to take a leap and start a new one. With these successful small businesses as partners, the Chamber is working to reverse the trend in small business creation, fight back against the policies that make it harder to start and sustain a company, and help Americans put their dreams and ideas to work in our economy.

Facebook response reflects pride for Sheboygan Chamber

by Betsy Alles, executive director of the Sheboygan County Chamber.

Earlier this month, we posted an amazing photo of a rainbow connecting Sheboygan's South Pier to the North Pier on the Sheboygan County Chamber's Facebook page.
It was taken by James Grunewald with an iPhone and was not touched up one bit.
The chamber's Facebook page received 50,000 views as a result. More than 385 people actually chose to share the post — more than I have ever seen on our page, bar none.
For me, this shows that people are excited about this place — about what it holds now and in the future.
It was the same week officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration were in town to talk about the very strong possibility of establishing a National Marine Sanctuary here. That project promises to provide huge educational benefits, a formidable swell in tourism and an opportunity to bring even greater attention and care for this amazing body of water and the history and riches it holds.
It was also the same week we hosted the Coastal Young Professionals Next Wave Awards, which provided an excellent forum for honoring our top young people in this area. Read more: Sheboygan Press

FS Chamber interest: The Compass Report: Fort Smith Region

The Compass Report is the only independent economic analysis of Arkansas’ top three metro areas (Central Arkansas, Northwest Arkansas, Fort Smith region). The report measures four leading and four current economic indicators to provide a grade for a regional economy.
A key factor in understanding The Compass is in understanding the “grading” approach used to measure the current and leading economic indicators. The strategy is to place the most recent data in historical context. Average values for the percent change over the referenced time period were calculated, as were standard deviations for each measure. Read more: The City Wire

Richmond Chamber: Chick-fil-A and Kings Dominion given Hanover workplace awards

Two Hanover County businesses were honored last week for workforce development.
The businesses were given the Marc Weiss Hanover Workforce Awards, which were established in 2012 and presented by the Hanover Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber.
The awards recognize one small company (1-99 employees) and one large business (100-plus employees) for success in workforce practices.
The awards are presented in memory of Weiss, who served as executive director of Hanover County Economic Development.
The 2015 recipients are:
  • Chick-fil-A restaurant in Ashland, which was recognized in the small-business category. Chick-fil-A has developed internal leadership programs focused on team-member growth, personal development, and relationships, both internal and within the community. The programs emphasize treating customers with dignity and respect.
  • Kings Dominion, which was honored in the large-business category. The theme park in northern Hanover began a new leadership development program aimed at developing the skills of young people who take on supervisory and management positions for the first time. It also has developed an online application process designed to eliminate the need for applicants to come to a physical location to complete an application. Read more Richmond Times-Dispatch

Indy chamber partnership: 'Hackers' ready for Round 2 against public-sector problems

Around this time last year, software developers from the area convened for the first Indy Civic Hack to help solve municipal problems, including reducing the number of “When is my trash pickup?” calls received by the mayor’s office.
This year, government agencies are hungry for tech solutions to arguably bigger challenges, including mapping blighted properties and digitizing a massive mileage-reimbursement process.
“It’s drummed up so much interest this year that we thought we could afford to provide a few different challenges,” said Michael Huber, CEO of Indy Chamber, which has partnered with tech advocacy group TechPoint to stage the second annual event.
“At the end of the day, the tech teams go to work and our civic partners are the clients," Huber said.
Some 150 “hackers” are expected to descend on the Eleven Fifty coding academy in Carmel on Saturday for the event, which starts at 10 a.m.
The pro-bono coders, who will break into teams, include students and tech employees from startups and large firms. They’ll have 12 hours to craft solutions, after which judges will pick a winner and two runners-up. Read more: Indianapolis Business Journal

#ChamberMonday - Famous Chamber of Commerce Thoughts & Facts

“The curious thing about the United States, as Alexis de Tocqueville remarked in Democracy in America, is that this land of the free is swirling with groups.”
