Pat Convery to chair statewide chamber association
Pat Convery, Howell Chamber |
The Howell-area business community — and,
on a greater scale, the Livingston County business community — now has a voice
and a face representing them at a statewide level.
Howell Area Chamber of Commerce President Pat Convery was recently
elected to serve as chairwoman of the Michigan Association of Chamber
Professionals. As such, Convery will help set the strategic direction of the
MACP and will take an active role in advancing the MACP’s strategic agenda.
“I’m very pleased to be nominated and elected. ... I think this is
a great honor for the Howell chamber,” Convery said. “It’s shows we’re
respected across the state.”
The MACP was organized in 1965 to support excellence in chambers
of commerce and promote best practices in chamber programs, board governance
and individual professional development. The MACP Board of Directors is
comprised of 12 executives representing chambers of commerce across the state
and addresses programming and policy issues that support chambers in their
communities.
Being elected chairwoman of the association represents Livingston
County well and will help keep the area at the forefront of developing issues,
Convery said.
“We at the Howell chamber have always been involved in the Michigan
Association of Chamber Professionals,” Convery said. “We always want to be at
the table when best practices, issues of importance to the chamber and
initiatives are discussed at a statewide level.”
Among the items on the MACP agenda this year include implementing
an inclusion task force to support greater diversity and collaboration in
chambers of commerce, partnering with the Michigan Small Business Development
Centers to deliver small-business services across the state, and recognizing
excellence in chambers of commerce that pursue national accreditation and
professional development. Read more: Livingston Daily Press-Argus

are encouraged to recognize outstanding teachers who have made significant
contributions in their educational experiences. Nominations can be mailed or
faxed to the Dearborn Area Chamber offices and can also be downloaded online
at www.DearbornAreaChamber.org. The deadline for nominations is Thursday, April 7,
2016 at 5:00 pm. Four winning teachers will be recognized, one each from Pre-K

Dearborn.
“We are very excited to once again have the opportunity to
recognize some tremendous educators in the Dearborn Public Schools district,”
commented Dearborn Area Chamber Education Committee Chair Phil Emma of Global
“E” Group. “Teachers make such a positive impact in the lives of our children,
and as a result we expect to receive nearly 1,000 nominations again this year.”
The Teacher of the Year Awards began in 1997, under the leadership
of Chamber Member Alberta Muirhead. In its first year, 65 nominations were
received for 57 teachers in 19 schools. The Dearborn Area Chamber received
nearly 1,000 nominations in 2015.
Teachers selected for this prestigious award will receive a $1,000
cash prize, a glass award commemorating their achievement, and will become part
of a select group of Dearborn teachers who have been recognized by the
community for their dedication and passion for teaching.
“The Chamber is thrilled to have the opportunity to honor those
who have such a significant impact on our youth in the Dearborn area,” said
Dearborn Area Chamber President Jackie Lovejoy. “The future success of our
community depends on the efforts and commitment of our educators and we have

U.S. Sen. Gary Peters headlines the
Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber annual Forecast Series
Joe Bauman, Birmingham- Bloomfield Chamber |
U.S. Sen. Gary Peters headlines a list of distinguished panelists as the
Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber kicks-off its annual Forecast Series.
Peters, an Oakland County native,
won his seat last November, replacing Carl Levin as one of Michigan’s two U. S.
senators. Prior to that, he had served as a member of the U.S.
House of Representatives since
being elected in 2008.
“We are thrilled to bring Mr. Peters
back to Oakland County to hear firsthand the concerns of the local business
community,” said Chamber President Joe Bauman. “Gary has been a good friend to
the Chamber for many years, and as a former small business owner himself, he
has worked diligently in Washington to represent the interests of the business
community first in the House and now the Senate.”
Peters will keynote the Chamber’s
Government Forecast, scheduled for 8-9:30 a.m. Monday, March 7, at the Townsend
Hotel in Birmingham, which will play host to all three breakfast programs.
First up in the three-part, annual
Forecast Series is the Chamber’s Economic Forecast, scheduled for 8-9:30 a.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 2. Scheduled speakers are Tony Vernaci, Vice President, Global Business Development
for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation; and Paul Traub,
Business Economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s Detroit Branch. The session will be moderated by real
estate attorney Linda Watson of the Clark
Hill law firm.
The Series will wrap-up on Tuesday,
April 5, with the Real Estate Forecast featuring a keynote address by Dan
Elsea, President of Brokerage Services for the Real Estate One Family of
Companies. More information: Birmingham-Bloomfield Chamber

Supporters
Cindy Larson, Muskegon-Lakeshore Chamber |
This year, we asked Chamber
members to support the Chamber 110%. These optional donations
will contribute to the success of Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber Foundation
projects such as the Watch Muskegon Image Campaign, community beautification, Silent Observer and more.
This 110%
investment means more working capital for projects. And it signifies
the trust our members have in the Chamber’s ability to deliver and

Chamber Note from Rex Richards, President, Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce:
Rex Richards Valparaiso Chamber |
John, I want to thank you for an outstanding map which you produced for our Valpo Chamber.
In my 43 years as a CEO in the chamber field, it was the smoothest project I have ever seen done. You made all the deadlines, your print quality and cartography were second to none. And of course you paid us in exactly the time frame you said you would so we could count the Royalty Check towards our current year revenues.
Life is very good when dealing with Town Square Publications.
You have the right of first refusal on our next map. You are a great partner for our chamber, We are living proof that a printed map is still very much in demand by both advertisers and consumers.
It would be my pleasure to recommend Town Square Publications as a firm Chambers and Tourism Bureaus should use when considering a printed map or other print publication.
Sincerely,
Rex G. Richards CCE

Lansing Regional Chamber Education Initiative: Michigan’s $37.1
billion insurance sector could draw more industry players to state
Tim Damen, Lansing Regional Chamber |
A statewide analysis of the insurance
industry’s $37.1 billion economic impact provides a basis to lure more players
to Michigan, as well as highlights the need for training new talent to replace
an aging workforce.
The insurance industry directly employs 41,000
people in Michigan and overall supports 114,000 jobs directly and indirectly,
according to the analysis by the Anderson Economic Group of
East Lansing.
But an aging workforce requires insurance
companies, agents and educators to work even more collaboratively to attract
and train young talent to replace people who will retire over the next decade.
“The insurance industry has a very aging
population,” Michigan Association of Insurance Agents CEO
Bev Barney said during a recent legislative hearing on the insurance industry’s
economic footprint in the state. “We know we need young people and new blood
(coming) into our industry, and that training does not happen overnight.”
Barney cited an association study that
indicated as much as 55 percent of the industry’s workforce in Michigan may
retire in the next four to seven years. Other reports cited during the
legislative hearing from the Insurance Institute of Michigan estimate
that 40 percent of the insurance professionals will reach retirement age within
the next decade.
Either way, that will create 45,000 to 63,000
job vacancies in the years ahead, making talent recruitment and training a big
issue for an industry that today’s younger generation doesn’t view as
particularly glamourous, Barney said.
“What we like to tease in the insurance
industry is we don’t look very sexy. Our industry is not attractive to young
people,” Barney said. “Until they’re in it and see what we do and how we serve,
they’ve not thought of insurance.”
Barney was among the speakers to address a joint
meeting of two state House and Senate committees to review the Anderson
Economic Group study on the industry’s presence in the state.
The study found that property and casualty
carriers in Michigan collectively paid $3 billion in wages in 2014 and together
spent another $3.3 billion on goods and services. Carriers two years ago also
paid $13 billion in commissions to agents across the state and $50 billion in
insurance claims, as well as $500 million in state and local taxes, according
to the analysis.
BROAD IMPACT
In grooming new talent, both Barney and Lansing
Regional Chamber of Commerce CEO Tim Daman offered a number of
examples where carriers, schools and universities collaborate to introduce the
industry to students and offer training for entry-level positions.
Farm Bureau Insurance in Lansing, for instance, works
with Olivet College and the Eaton
Intermediate School District on a program where high school
students earn college credit, serve internships, job shadow professionals, and
receive on-site instruction at the insurance company. The Insurance Institute
of Michigan has similar initiatives going on in Ingham County and Flint.
In another example that Daman cited, Jackson
National Life opened the $12 million Jackson Zone development center
in 2013 in downtown East Lansing in a move to work closely with Michigan State
University students. See

Surprise award recipient at
Midland Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting
Bill Allen, MACC |
With a unique award recipient
and some surprises in store, the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated 77
years of business and innovation Tuesday morning at the organization’s annual
meeting.
Chamber CEO Bill Allen said
there was “bit of a wild agenda” planned for the 354 people in attendance,
including chamber staff who gathered award nominations and put together an
event to remember for the business leaders of Midland.
“I hope we were able to
exceed your expectations last year, because you know that’s really our goal,”
Allen said. “We hope you’re still proud of this chamber and share these
communications with your colleagues.”
The Chamber was gathered to
celebrate an 89 percent retention rate over the past year, a figure Allen
called “an amazing number,” made even more amazing by a Board of Directors and
staff team that worked hard through leadership changes and a new partnership
with Midland Tomorrow.
“It would’ve been easier to
stay status quo,” Allen said. “But that’s not leadership.”
Steve LaLonde, chair of the
chamber’s 2015 board, said it was his honor to choose and announce the “most
prestigious” award that represents commitment to the Midland Chamber.
“The heart and soul of this
organization never faltered,” LaLonde said, because of the recipient, who was
referred to as both “he” and “she” before he revealed all 10 chamber staff
members would receive the Chairman’s Award.
The Chamber staff members
honored were: Amy Berry, Information Specialist; Diana Butler, Director of
Membership; Roger Chamberlin, Director of Finance; Melissa Eigner, Program
Specialist; Stephanie Kolodziejski, Farmers Market Master; Kristy LeVasseur,
Director of Communications; Tina Lynch, Business Development Coordinator; Diane
Middleton, Director of Community Programs; Char Reed, Information Specialist;
and Lindsay Rotarius, Program Specialist. Read more: Midland Daily News

Regional chamber awards recognize 3 leaders tonight
Tim Daman, Lansing
Regional Chamber
|
Three
business leaders will be recognized for their accomplishments tonight
at the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce’s 2016 Annual Dinner.
Mark
Hooper, founding partner of Andrews Hooper Pavlik, PLC, will receive the
Community Service award, advertising agency M3 Group will receive the
Outstanding Small Business award and Sohn Linen Service will receive the
Chamber Legacy award. The three winners had to apply and be nominated for the
awards.
“They
each bring unique perspectives to our region,” said chamber President and CEO
Tim Daman.
Hooper
will be recognized for his involvement in the local business investment group
Capital Community Angels as well as his financial support of charities in the
region. He serves as a board member for the Capital Region Community
Foundation, Ele’s Place and is a member of the Rotary Club of Lansing.
“With all
the involvement he’s had in the community, he’s right in line with folks going
back to the 1940s who’ve won this award,” Daman said.
Hooper
said he has looked at the long list of recipients and said it is a great honor
to be listed among them.
"At
Lansing Rotary, service is one of the core things we do," Hooper said.
"To be recognized for it is extra special. Service helps people and helps
make the community better."
M3
Group’s growth in recent years have made the business a great candidate for the
award, Daman said.
"It's
validating that what we've been doing as an organization is the right
thing," said CEO and founder Tiffany Dowling."The team is dedicated
to what they do every day." Read more: Lansing State Journal
