Valpo Chamber education: Students learn about reality in future game
Hebron Middle School eighth-graders Ashley Piunti, Ashley Purevich and Emma Slusser were in for a few surprises Tuesday.
The three went through Envision the Future, hosted by the Greater Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce and held at the Porter County Expo Center, which gives eighth-graders from across Porter County a taste of real-world expenses.
"You spend a lot of money on different things," said Ashley Piunti, 13, whose chosen career for the exercise was a veterinarian. The financial surprise for her was "how much clothing could be."
Ashley Purevich, 15, who selected pediatric nurse, said financial bookkeeping was a challenge.
"It's really hard to keep track of your money. You have a ton of money and your money is going down a lot just over food and clothing," she said, adding the cost of a used car also came as a shock.
For Emma, 14, posing as an FBI agent for the program, the sticker shock wasn't quite as bad because her dad reminds her on a regular basis about how much stuff costs.
"My dad loves filling me in on a few things so his advice helped me realize it's not as easy as I thought it was," she said.
In all, more than 1,100 eighth-graders rotated through the program's 12 stations, including the "unexpected surprises" table toward the end, which offered expensive expenses the students couldn't plan for, such as broken appliances, and sometimes pleasant surprises, such as a windfall from items selling on eBay.
The chamber has sponsored the exercise for more than 20 years, said member services director Kurt Gillins. The program includes 90 chamber members staffing stations for the students.
"It allows business people in the community to get a feel for what the upcoming workforce is going to be interested in and for eighth-graders, it gives them an idea of what careers are really out there. Not everyone is going to be a professional athlete or an actor," he said. Read more: Post-Tribune

From Lori Urbaniec, GOA (Greater O'Hare Association --- the 2016 Business Expo
Good Afternoon,
We live in a digital world with computers in our pockets and 24 hour access to social media. While this is the reality of 2016, research from the University of Oxford published in January of this year suggests that social media is great at enhancing relationships, but only after having face-to-face contact. Social media seems designed to keep up with old friends and solidify new contacts, but has to yet to subtitute a good ol' fashion face-to-face interaction where you can really get a feel for a person. This is why year after year, the GOA Business Expo draws over 1,000 people and sells out every display booth. It seems common knowledge that people do business with people they know, so reserve your booth today and get face to face with over 1,000 future patrons at one of the largest business expos in the Chicagoland!
