Good morning Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Chamber Executive Ongoing Education: A Passion for Leadership: Lessons on Change and Reform from Fifty Years of Public Service - by Robert M. Gates

From the former secretary of defense and author of the acclaimed #1 best-selling memoir"Duty, " a characteristically direct, informed, and urgent assessment of why big institutions are failing us and how smart, committed leadership can effect real improvement regardless of scale.

Across the realms of civic and private enterprise alike, bureaucracies vitally impact our security, freedoms, and everyday life. With so much at stake, competence, efficiency, and fiscal prudence are essential, yet Americans know these institutions fall short. Many despair that they are too big and too hard to reform.

Robert Gates disagrees. Having led change successfully at three monumental organizations the CIA, Texas A&M University, and the Department of Defense he offers us the ultimate insider's look at how major bureaus, organizations, and companies can be transformed, which is by turns heartening and inspiring and always instructive.

With practical, nuanced advice on tailoring reform to the operative culture (we see how Gates worked within the system to increase diversity at Texas A&M); effecting change within committees; engaging the power of compromise ( In the real world of bureaucratic institutions, you almost never get all you want when you want it ); and listening and responding to your team, Gates brings the full weight of his wisdom, candor, and devotion to civic duty to inspire others to lead desperately needed change."

Pat Convery to chair statewide chamber association

Pat Convery,
Howell Area Chamber
The Howell-area business community — and, on a greater scale, the Livingston County business community — now has a voice and a face representing them at a statewide level.

Howell Area Chamber of Commerce President Pat Convery was recently elected to serve as chairwoman of the Michigan Association of Chamber Professionals. As such, Convery will help set the strategic direction of the MACP and will take an active role in advancing the MACP’s strategic agenda.

“I’m very pleased to be nominated and elected. ... I think this is a great honor for the Howell chamber,” Convery said. “It’s shows we’re respected across the state.”

The MACP was organized in 1965 to support excellence in chambers of commerce and promote best practices in chamber programs, board governance and individual professional development. The MACP Board of Directors is comprised of 12 executives representing chambers of commerce across the state and addresses programming and policy issues that support chambers in their communities.

Being elected chairwoman of the association represents Livingston County well and will help keep the area at the forefront of developing issues, Convery said.

“We at the Howell chamber have always been involved in the Michigan Association of Chamber Professionals,” Convery said. “We always want to be at the table when best practices, issues of importance to the chamber and initiatives are discussed at a statewide level.”

Among the items on the MACP agenda this year include implementing an inclusion task force to support greater diversity and collaboration in chambers of commerce, partnering with the Michigan Small Business Development Centers to deliver small-business services across the state, and recognizing excellence in chambers of commerce that pursue national accreditation and professional development. Chief Justice John D. Minton, Jr. To Address Greater Owensboro Rooster Booster

The Honorable John D. Minton, Jr., Chief Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, will address the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce Rooster Booster Breakfast this Thursday, March 4, 2016 at 7:30 a.m. Central Standard Time.

The Greater Owensboro Community Priorities List includes two judicial specific projects -- Family Court Judge and a new Judicial Center.

Daviess County is the largest county in the Commonwealth without a Family Court Judge. In 2015, several organizations joined to request the Chief Justice to support this community priority which Chief Justice Minton subsequently included in the judiciary budget. This budget was introduced prior to Governor Matt Bevin’s budget proposal which included sweeping cuts.

Rooster Booster is the monthly breakfast meeting and premier event for our 102 year old organization. Held at the Owensboro Convention Center on the banks of the Ohio River, “Rooster Booster” is considered the largest and most notable monthly chamber meetings in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Reservations are required by Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. Reservations may be made by visiting owensboro.com and clicking on events calendar, March Rooster Booster; or by calling 270.926.1860.  Cost is $12 per person. The event is open to the public. More information: Candance Castlen Brake, President and CEO, Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce

Sheboygan County Chamber's Betsy Alles: Never stop growing

Betsy Alles,
Sheboygan County Chamber
I remember a fellow employee several years ago who remarked that he didn’t see a need to attend any continuing education workshops – he believed he already knew all he needed to know.
He was in his 30s. The rest of us in the room were stunned into awkward silence at his pronouncement. I vividly remember my first post-college development opportunities and how they shaped my career and my life. I was always excited when my employer afforded me these opportunities.
My first Toastmasters series gave me courage and composure. My first professional conference provided me with important peer interaction and workshops in my field. My first licensing exams gave me stature. I was convinced.
Continuing education is a lifelong passion. I read articles, watch TED Talks, go to conferences, travel and explore new technology at every opportunity.
Sometimes I time my vacations to attend special conferences that address a personal interest. I will be 65 this year and I don’t plan to stop learning any time soon.
Those who don’t have that desire baffle me. What is life if not a journey of discovery? Where is the excitement in standing still? How can I teach others if I’ve stopped learning myself? Read more: Sheboygan Press

Indiana Chamber Recognition: 2016 Best Places to Work in Indiana Announced

Kevin Brinegar,
Indiana Chamber
Small companies lead the way on the 2016 Best Places to Work in Indiana list, with nearly half (48) of the 100 honorees coming from that category. More than a quarter (27) of the honorees are making their debut or returning to the list after at least a year’s absence.
“The companies selected represent some of our most outstanding Hoosier employers. They embrace the idea that a positive work culture that includes respect, communication, opportunity and being part of a team not only makes it a place in which employees want to work but also fuels the success of the company,” states Indiana Chamber President Kevin Brinegar.
“We had our highest number of applicants to date this time – 200 in total,” he relays. “It’s becoming more competitive and we are glad to see that. Going forward, we will continue to push for Hoosier businesses throughout the state to apply to be considered.” Read more; see the list.
The actual rankings for the companies will be unveiled at a May 5 awards dinner, presented in partnership with Hylant, at the Indiana Convention Center (Sagamore Ballroom) in downtown Indianapolis.
