Organizers expect big crowds for annual event

Lou Molitor, Kenosha Chamber
The 25th anniversary of the Kenosha Expo got off to a rousing start Saturday as some 2,800 people passed through the doors.
“I’ve seen great Expos, and I think this is our biggest and best,” said Lou Molitor, president of the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce. “After 25 years, we know how to do this.”
The event, which showcases Kenosha-area businesses, opened Saturday and continues today, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Petretti Fieldhouse at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 900 Wood Road.
Admission is $2; those under 18 are free. Newsperk customers receive free admission. Free parking and a free shuttle to outlying parking areas is available.
The 140 vendors at the event represent a 100 percent sellout of available vender booth space, Molitor said.

The event includes the Kenosha Community Health Fair, with 16 health screening stations, including vision and hearing screenings, carotid artery screenings, acupuncture, nerve scans and medication screenings. Read more: Kenosha News

#Chamber ceremony: Prince William Valor Awards to Honor Local Superheroes in Public Service

Debbie Jones,
Prince William Chamber
Manassas, Virginia – The Prince William Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 30th Annual Valor Awards ceremony on Thursday, March 17th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. Sponsored by Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, this prestigious event honors local heroes from police, fire and rescue for their courageous and often lifesaving actions in 2015. This year’s theme is “Honoring Local Superheroes.”

A reception will be catered by Okra’s Cajun Creole in the Didlake Grand Foyer of the Hylton Performing Arts Center followed by the awards ceremony in Merchant Hall.  Aaron Gilchrist, Anchor of News4 Today will serve as Master of Ceremonies, reading the stories of our local super heroes in police, fire and rescue. This year, for only the second time, the public is invited to attend and hear tales of the valorous acts of the men and women in uniform representing Virginia State Police, Prince William County, the City of Manassas and the Town of Occoquan.

“The Prince William Chamber takes great pride in recognizing those who perform extraordinary acts of self-sacrifice and bravery in the line of duty. This is the 30th anniversary of our Valor Awards and it is one of the most meaningful events we host each year. As leaders in the business community, we invite the public to join us as we come together to thank and recognize these men and women for all they do. This is an opportunity to honor those who risk so much to protect our lives, our livelihoods and our quality of life,” said Chamber President & CEO Debbie Jones. Close to 400 people are expected to attend, including the Chiefs of all local public safety departments and many local elected officials. Read more: Prince William Chamber

St. Joseph County Chamber honors three local business leaders

Jeff Rea,
St. Joseph Chamber
I believe that people don’t necessarily do the things they do for recognition or for awards, but I think it is a nice thing when one’s peers recognize good works.
Last week the Chamber had an opportunity to do just that as we recognized three individuals at our annual Salute to Business luncheon.
Larry Garatoni was presented with our W. Scott Miller Distinguished Business Leader award, honoring an individual who demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit, makes significant contributions to the area business environment and shows personal involvement and commitment to the community.
Over the past 40 years, he has owned and managed 12-15 companies. He built and operated health care-related facilities, he started or acquired and served as the chief executive officer of several different software and Internet sales companies, and then founded HQ Investments, a firm that manages investments in public and private equities, hedge funds, venture capital and angel investments.
Passionate about education, Larry and his wife, Judy, most recently founded the Career Academy and the Success Academy in South Bend.
Becky Zaseck was presented with our Athena Award. The award is presented annually to an individual who embodies the highest level of professional excellence in his/her career, devotes time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the community and assists women in realizing their leadership potential.
Zaseck serves as the president and CEO of REAL Services. Zaseck has been with the organization since 1986, taking over in 2007. She oversees more than 230 employees. Under her leadership, the organization is thriving as a significant example of a hybrid nonprofit and for-profit agency, offering catering for the business and private community but also preparing more than 1,000 meals per day for Meals on Wheels and the nutrition programs.

Her diligent work and passion over the years to assist the elderly have inspired others to join her vision and mission, specifically women. A vast majority of REAL Services employees and senior leadership are women. Zaseck continues to coach, train and lead talented women in her company to become senior managers and leaders in their own right, and has been recognized regionally and statewide for her efforts. Kentucky Chamber interest: Local principals attend leadership training

Two local principals are using knowledge they gained from a leadership institute in North Carolina to better their schools.
Lewis County Central Elementary School Principal Stacy Kidwell was one of 56 Kentucky school leaders chosen to attend the institute in Greensboro, N.C., in July 2015.
Kidwell said the training was not just about leading in school. Instead, leaders were given opportunities to learn about how to be a leader as a person.
"It wasn't your typical training," Kidwell said. "It wasn't school training. It was more personal. We took a lot of personality tests and learned how to be a better leader on a personal level, whether it be in a school or a business or in another capacity. This is information we can take back to integrate into whatever position we hold."
According to Kidwell, she is not disappointed with having applied for the training.
“This is the best leadership training I have ever received. This experience has changed my life and will help me lead Lewis County Central Elementary to the top. I am humbled to be part of such a unique learning experience,” she said.
It is also something she would recommend to any school leader.
"I would encourage any principal in the area to apply for it," she said. "It will help any school leader be the best they can be."
In Fleming County, Simon's Middle School Principal Jesse Bacon was also chosen to attend the training.
Bacon said he was thrilled to have been given the opportunity.

“The executive leadership program gave me an unbelievable opportunity to continue my growth as a leader in public education. It was a unique experience that helped shape me as an executive leader and provided me with tools that will help us make Simons Middle School one of the top schools in the state. It is without a doubt the best leadership program I have ever been a part of," he said.
Kidwell and Bacon, alongside the other leaders, attended classes at the Center for Creative Leadership, which is a top-ranked provider of executive education. She also attended followup sessions in the fall and in February in Frankfort.
"We'll also be going back for a meeting with the governor at the governor's mansion sometime in April," she said.
Kidwell said they were chosen for the training after applying for it. Leaders were chosen by an advisory board made up of business leaders and school superintendents.
Dave Adkisson, secretary of the Kentucky Chamber Foundation and president and CEO of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce said he, too, would suggest any leader to apply for the training.
“Employers understand the positive impact of strong leadership in the workplace, and the same is true of schools,” he said. “That’s why we think it is important that Kentucky principals be given executive-level training similar to that provided for corporate leaders.” Read more: The Ledger Independent
