Chamber note from Gail Haller, Park Ridge Chamber Executive Director

Arlington Heights business leaders celebrate chamber awards

More than 250 community and business leaders took a trip back to the roaring 1920s for the 69th annual Arlington Heights Chamber of Commerce Installation and Awards celebration on Friday night.
The event, hosted at Arlington Park for the first time, was complete with women in flapper dresses, a live band and casino and slot machines -- with fake money -- as part of the fun.
Chamber Executive Director Jon Ridler even joked with state Rep. David Harris about the irony of the play gambling at the track while a battle to bring real slots there is a source of ongoing contention between the racecourse's owners and politicians in Springfield.
"It took the chamber of commerce to get slot machines at the racetrack, but it's up to you to keep them here," Ridler said.
Village President Tom Hayes shared some 1920s facts with the crowd, including that in that decade the population of Arlington Heights jumped from 2,500 to 5,000. It was also the decade that Arlington High School and Arlington Park opened.
Getting back to more recent history, Ridler said 2015 was a good year for the chamber as he talked about the organization's new brand: "Connect, engage, succeed."
Outgoing chamber board President Amy Philpott thanked the chamber and community for their support during her year as leader.
New Chairman Colin Gilbert said he was looking forward to more communication, collaboration and success in 2016. Read more: Daily Herald

Greater Springfield Chamber plans for Q5 economic-development campaign

The Quantum Growth Partnership (Q5) is the economic development partnership led by The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce. Public, private, and nonprofit sectors have come together with the following goal: to grow Sangamon County by improving our ability to create jobs, attract talent and make capital investment.
We have a shared vision for Springfield and Sangamon County, with the Quantum Growth Partnership acting as a catalyst to create a strong, growing economy through talent, leadership and collaboration.
While Q5 enters the last year of its second five-year cycle and we look to the next five-year phase of Q5 (2017–21), we are more committed than ever to ensuring Sangamon County’s long-term prosperity and vitality. Success demands a focused, aggressive strategy, strengthened by community support and collaboration. Therefore, over the last several months, we have worked together with our investors and community partners to chart the course for our future. Thanks to the creative vision of civic and business leaders throughout the region, our strategy is in place.
As we complete 2016 and move into the next five-year cycle of Q5, we will focus on five strategic priorities:
Economic expansion:
* Support local entrepreneurship activities.
* Promote economic diversification through targeted business attraction.
* Certify and promote sites for future development, which meet market demand.
* Identify and address the business climate through the Business Retention and Expansion program.
* Implement sound, competitive development policy.
Urban revitalization:
* Work collaboratively with a broad group of stake holders to revitalize downtown Springfield and other urban neighborhoods. Read more: State Journal-Register

#BestChamber Practices: Skokie Chamber: Multi-Chamber Networking Program

Multiply your networking potential! Members looking for a productive networking experience will enjoy the structured format of this program, which gives each participant an opportunity to speak to a receptive audience about his/her company’s products and services. Attendees will have the chance to promote their businesses to an expanded audience at the Mega Connect Multi-Chamber Networking Breakfast on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 7:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Chicago North Shore.
This is a multi-chamber event including the DBR, Des Plaines, Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Highland Park, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Niles, Northbrook, Park Ridge, Skokie, and Wilmette/Kenilworth Chambers of Commerce.
The event will begin with informal networking over a buffet breakfast. Attendees will then be divided into small groups at assigned tables where everyone will give 2-minute presentations on their companies. Following will be an additional presentation to a second and third group of participants. In addition, everyone will receive a contact list of pre-registered participants. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to expand your reach and resources!

Howard Meyer, Executive Director of the Skokie Chamber, has run several "Mega-Connect" networking events with other North Shore and Northwest chamber professionals. Speed Networking Events offer you a wonderful opportunity to meet many people from other chambers of Commerce in quick succession. But sometimes they can be overwhelming. In order for these events to be successful, for you, follow the rules, follow the script and be concise without going over your three minute limit per person. Thank you and happy networking!

How this works… (6 to 10 People at each table)

1. Each person has a name tag with their table rotation listed.
2. We have tried to separate you so industries are not duplicated at each table, however due to the numbers present at today’s function, please understand if there is an occasional duplication. - Remember in the chamber world, we are all colleagues, not competitors.
3. The moderator will announce each rotation, please proceed to the table number printed on your name tag.
4. Once at your table, assign a time keeper.
5. Each participant will have three minutes to introduce themselves. We have provided a script for your convenience. You do not need a script if it does not reflect the needs of you or your company.
6. The moderator will give a five minute warning before each table rotation.
7. There will be a five minute passing period in between each rotation.

8. There will be (X) table rotations for today’s program (Three table rotations would be a good meeting’s worth.)
9. Please feel free to stay at the conclusion of the speed networking program so you can continue to make conections!

Introductions
  1. Your Name
  2. Name of Your Company
  3. What is Your Position With Your Company
  4. What Does Your Company Do…

Chamber Note from Rex Richards, President, Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce:
December 18, 2015
John, I want to thank you for an outstanding map which you produced for our Valpo Chamber.
In my 43 years as a CEO in the chamber field, it was the smoothest project I have ever seen done. You made all the deadlines, your print quality and cartography were second to none. And of course you paid us in exactly the time frame you said you would so we could count the Royalty Check towards our current year revenues.
Life is very good when dealing with Town Square Publications.
You have the right of first refusal on our next map. You are a great partner for our chamber, We are living proof that a printed map is still very much in demand by both advertisers and consumers.
It would be my pleasure to recommend Town Square Publications as a firm Chambers and Tourism Bureaus should use when considering a printed map or other print publication.
Sincerely,
Rex G. Richards CCE
President, Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce

Elgin Area Chamber celebrates growth in 2015

Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce officials highlighted the group's successes Tuesday during their annual luncheon at the Grand Victoria Casino.
Permits were issued for nearly 457,000 square feet of new manufacturing space in 2015, a 15 percent increase from 2014, with an anticipated 1.1 million square feet of new development slated this year, officials said.
The Elgin Development Group, an independent arm of the chamber funded by the city, helped bring Zilber Property Group, a Motorola facility and The Fabricators & Manufacturers Association to Elgin, they said. No mention was made of any businesses that left in 2015.
EDG's annual "Manufacture Your Future" exhibit last year included a "Manufacture Like a Girl" component to encourage young women to consider careers in manufacturing.
Elgin's retail vacancy rate was 8.2 percent, which is lower than Naperville, St. Charles and Schaumburg, officials said. The city's unemployment rate was 6.7 percent in November, better than the same month in 2014, with nearly 54,000 people employed, or a gain of nearly 3,000 since January 2015, officials said.
The chamber's latest figures show it had 580 members representing 20,100 employees in the Elgin area. Read more: Daily Herald

Sycamore Chamber of Commerce honors business leaders at annual meeting

About 375 businesses leaders and community members gathered Thursday to recap 2015 and honor some of the people and businesses who contributed to last year’s success.
The Sycamore Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual meeting Thursday at St. Mary’s Memorial Hall, where four businesses were presented with awards for their role in the Sycamore business community. The business organization also gave this year’s Clifford Danielson Outstanding Citizen Award to Michael Larson.
DeKalb County Circuit Clerk Maureen Josh nominated Larson for the award, saying he “epitomizes the very essence” of an outstanding citizen.
Larson, who has served a number of organizations including the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and the DeKalb County Builders and Developers Association, didn’t become a model citizen by accident, he said. He has lived by a set of self-prescribed rules that demand he improve upon everything he touches.
“I’m stunned, and appreciative of getting the award,” Larson said. “The people who were there before me are fantastic people, and I’m just glad to be on the list.” Read more: Daily Chronicle

A note to share from Jim Baumann, Executive Director of the Boyne City, Michigan Chamber of Commerce:

(Hi John), Wondering if you might post this on your blog or a future newsletter?

Would you like to live and work in a cool little town - Boyne City, population 3,700, in Northern Michigan? Your office would be in a log cabin on the waterfront of Lake Charlevoix. Jim Baumann has had this great job for nearly 8 years and will be retiring in early November. We're looking for my replacement and would like to start interviewing in March so the new person could work with me for awhile during a transition period. You'd also get to hire your own Associate Director - we're holding the position open with some part-time people for awhile. That's the staff - two. Budget is $150k, healthy reserve fund, 360 members, great board, great community where everyone works well together. Job description: http://bit.ly/1nv1eDb

Thanks!

Jim Baumann
