Grand Rapids Area Chamber launches new program to 'elevate' minority entrepreneurs

Up to 10 minority entrepreneurs will be chosen to participate in Elevate Minority Business, a new program aimed at accelerating the growth and development of established minority-owned businesses in West Michigan.
The program will offer business analysis and advice through direct consulting, peer roundtables, and outside expertise from a personal board of advisers.
The deadline to apply for the inaugural class is Friday, Feb. 5, according to a news release by the program's sponsor, the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce
"A diverse entrepreneurial community is vital to a thriving West Michigan economy—one that enriches lives and supports local growth," said Rick Baker, CEO and president of the Chamber.
"At its core, Elevate Minority Business is about assisting successful entrepreneurs who are poised for extraordinary growth and ready to work on their businesses—not just in them.

"It's about building upon strong business fundamentals and enhancing leaders so they can meet market demands, deliver sustainable business outcomes, and become strategic partners for their buyers," said Baker. Read more: MLive

The initiative has a website, msben.com, to facilitate these connections.
“The Mississippi Business Engagement Network serves as a way for business leaders, economic developers and site selectors to collaborate with our universities, said Dr. Glenn Boyce, Commissioner of Higher Education. “The website was created to provide answers and make connections in a quick and easy manner.”
The Mississippi Business Engagement Network is designed to connect business leaders and economic developers with all of the resources, experts and research capabilities within Mississippi Public Universities and help develop, grow and sustain collaborative relationships between the business community and the university system.

Danville-Boyle County Chamber Forum: Addiction: creating recovery-friendly workplaces

Many companies and corporations nationwide are recognizing that addiction is a disease, should be treated as such and are finding that implementing recovery-friendly workplaces is both financially sound and the right thing to do.
In an attempt to encourage the same in Boyle and surrounding counties, the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce held a "Substance Use and the Workplace" forum Tuesday at the Boyle County Fire Department Headquarters.
"It's an issue that's facing every single person in every single community in the country," said Paula Fowler, director of  the Boyle Chamber, of the ever-increasing scourge of addiction in the workplace. "Not only is it affecting our families, it is affecting our work force. It's affecting people's ability to be employed and employer's ability to get employees."
Kathy Miles of the Boyle County Agency for Substance Abuse Police (ASAP) said the forum was meant to directly address the solutions to the problem that is creating hindrances to job creation, retention and growth.
"We want to help (employers) do two things — be a better drug-free workplace and help be a better friendly-recovery workplace for people who are in recovery," said Miles. "That one is the one that gets forgotten. We need the workforce — that's the bottom line — we need the workforce." Read more: Central Kentucky News

On Friday, the Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Meeting at the Conference Center of the Best Western in La Porte near Pine Lake. At the meeting, the Chamber of Commerce presented members and guests with their 2015 Annual Report as well as Chamber awards for Ambassador of the Year and Business Person of the Year. Also featured at the event was an address from Representative Jackie Walorski from Indiana’s 2nd District.
“Today is our annual luncheon that’s required by our bylaws to hold an annual meeting and make a report about our activities this year,” said Chamber President, Michael Seitz. “We’re pleased to have Congresswoman Jackie Walorski as our featured speaker here today. In the last year and a half we’ve had the Governor, U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly, and now we have U.S. Representative Jackie Walorski.”
“Jackie is a longtime Hoosier,” Seitz said. “I’ve known her for around 25 years and she is dedicated to her career helping Hoosier families. She’s grateful to serve the people of Indiana’s 2nd District in the 114th Congress where she serves on the House Armed Services Committee, Veteran’s Affairs and the Agriculture Committee. Using some Hoosier common sense, Jackie welcomes the opportunity to work across the aisle to get our fiscal house in order and create American jobs.” Read more: LaPorte County Life
