Springfield chamber purchases software to analyze labor market data

The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce said it recently purchased Jobs EQ software to help analyze and access data about the local labor market to share with new and existing businesses.

The new software will allow staff to access data from key sources such as the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics and National Center for Education Statistics to help identify a community's strengths and weaknesses.

Data such as employment and wage information and demographics are readily available based on state, region or even ZIP code. Reports can be gathered and shared with chamber members to determine workforce capabilities and demand. Occupation-specific data is paired with educational system data to help describe the community's workforce pipeline.

The chamber said the software will help with business retention, expansion and attraction. Read more: Illinois Business Daily

Ryan Craig leaves Logan County Chamber

Ryan Craig announced his resignation Tuesday, March 29 as Executive Director of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce, located in Russellville. Craig began his duties directing the Chamber in January of 2015.
“It is with much sadness that I tender my resignation as Executive Director of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce. This is not a decision I take lightly,” said Craig who owns Craig Media, LLC, which is also the owner of the Todd County Standard newspaper in Elkton, Ky.
When Craig stepped up as Chamber director, his wife Jenni began running the Standard as the General Manager which freed him up to take over the Chamber. Jenni is an award winning journalist who once worked for the News-Democrat & Leader while attending Western Kentucky University where she earned her journalism degree.
Unfortunately, due to an injury last August, Jenni has been unable to work more than a few hours a day and just a few days a week.
“My wife is very good at her job, but without her or me at such a small operation the advertising sales have suffered now for almost six months. While I think the work we do here at the Chamber is very important, my business pays for my family’s health insurance and supplements the difference in pay between what I made before coming to the Chamber. I must return to right the ship, so to speak,” Craig stated in his letter to the Chamber Board of Directors.
Chamber president Joe Hendricks released a statement on behalf of the Board of Directors and the members of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce on Craig’s departure.
“I want to express our appreciation for the work Ryan has done for the people of Logan County and for the Chamber of Commerce. There is no doubt that Ryan and his unique talents and abilities will be missed. I wish circumstances would have permitted him to continue to serve as executive director into the future. We wish Craig and Jenni good health and hope that the Todd Standard continues to prosper. The Executive Committee for the Chamber has met and is beginning the process for hiring a new Executive Director,” said Hendricks.
Craig said it has been a real honor to serve with the Chamber Board of Directors. Read more: News Democrat Leader

Valpo chamber board chair has lifetime NWI roots

Valpo chamber board chairman Randy Zromkoski has spent a lifetime watching Northwest Indiana evolve and change. Born in Gary during the growth era of the steel industry he has seen economic ups and downs, racial and cultural changes of the region, and the emergence of Valparaiso as a leader not only in the Region but also in the state.
Zromkoski, a partner with the downtown law firm Blachly, Tabor, Bozik and Hartman, has had a birds-eye view of the development in downtown Valpo. “Our offices are uniquely positioned to literally watch the downtown come to life with restaurants, entertainment, and the incredible Central Park Plaza and new Urschel Pavilion,” Zromkoski said. “It is absolutely amazing to see the life and vibrancy and people of all ages enjoying our downtown.”
Zromkoski attributes Valpo’s successes to a variety of factors including leadership and community involvement. He noted that as he grew from a young, practicing attorney, his mentor and law firm founder Quentin Blachly instilled in him and others in the firm a sense of community responsibility. “Quentin was a true community leader and he set the example for the rest of us to not just do business in the community, but to step up as leaders and to give our time to community organizations,” Zromkoski said.
Zromkoski has served in a variety of leadership positions with community organizations such as Porter-Starke Services, Mental Health America of Porter County, the Porter County United Way and the chamber. He notes that these and many other agencies contribute to the strength of the community and its ability to address challenges and seize opportunities. Zromkoski has also taught at the Valparaiso University Law School .and notes the strong relationship between VU and the city. Read more: NWITimes.com

12 on Tuesday: Former GMCC exec Mark Richardson
Mark Richardson has parlayed a career in tourism and economic development into a business as a career counselor and entrepreneurship facilitator. The business he co-founded last year, GigBlender, uses technology to connect companies with talent.
Name your top 5 MCs.
Tupac, Dre, Kanye, Adam Yauch (Beastie Boys), Jay-Z
What motivates you more, doubters or supporters?
Doubters tend to be more of a catalyst than motivation, especially if I’m working on something new. People telling me that I “… can’t …” is a great way to start something. But supporters are much more motivation for me – they tend to be more committed.
What does it mean to be Black in Madison?
I can only speak for what it means for me. And for me it means: that I have to be better than good, because good isn’t good enough. It means that WHOM I know is at least as important as WHAT I know. It means that I am working uphill most of the time. It means that I can’t miss opportunities to change perception. It means that I have to be more careful … AND take more risk. It means I have to find ways to work with some people who don’t want me at the table. It means that I engage with many, but I surround myself with a trusted few. And it means that I have to be ready to push in the ways that I can.
What three leaders in Madison under 50 have impressed you the most?
Everett Mitchell, Rebecca Ryan, Brandi Grayson
What’s the biggest stumbling block in Madison to turning the corner on our racial disparities?
Fear of failure.
What are your top three priorities at this point in your life?
My friends & family, my entrepreneurial efforts, and mentoring young professionals
What made you take the risk to start your business, GigBlender?
Two things: First, I knew it was time to invest in my own vision, the same way that I’d invested in others along the way. Secondly, it was an opportunity to build a team and create a working culture from scratch.
You’ve worked at the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce, Urban League of Greater Madison, and the State of Wisconsin Department of Tourism. What did working in those different organizations teach you about Madison?
It taught me a lot of things, but among the most important things it taught me was a) how important professional relationships are, and b) how to bring my unique skill set with me no matter what sector I might be working in or with. Christian County Chamber ribbon cutting: New senior citizen fitness center unveiled

Senior citizens have a new and improved place to get active and exercise, as an upgraded fitness room in the Christian County Senior Center was unveiled on Tuesday.
Tom Jones, former magistrate and senior citizen board member, said the need for upgrades came up about four months ago. The center had a fitness room, but most of the equipment was broken or outdated.
A couple new treadmills, exercise bikes and weights fill the new fitness center room at the center on West Seventh Street.
All the equipment was carefully selected for the seniors’ use.
The Christian County Chamber of Commerce dedicated the new facility with a ribbon cutting, and several community leaders, county and city officials were in attendance. Judge-Executive Steve Tribble even tried out one of the new exercise bikes at the ceremony.
The Christian Fiscal Court and Hopkinsville City Council contributed a combined $14,700 to the new exercise facility, according to magistrate Darrell Gustafson, who serves on the senior citizen board.

Additional dollars will be raised through a fish fry from 5-7 p.m. April 7 at the center, and several local government officials, including Tribble, will serve the meal. Read more: Kentucky New Era
