Good morning Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Chamber Executive Ongoing Education Weekly New Idea: "The Power of Broke: How Empty Pockets, a Tight Budget, and a Hunger for Success Can Become Your Greatest Competitive Advantage" by Daymond John

Daymond John has been practicing the power of broke ever since he started selling his home-sewn t-shirts on the streets of Queens. With no funding and a $40 budget, Daymond had to come up with out-of-the box ways to promote his products. Luckily, desperation breeds innovation, and so he hatched an idea for a creative campaign that eventually launched the FUBU brand into a $6 billion dollar global phenomenon. But it might not have happened if he hadn't started out broke - with nothing but a heart full of hope and a ferocious drive to succeed by any means possible.

Here, the FUBU founder and star of ABC's Shark Tank shows that, far from being a liability, broke can actually be "your greatest competitive advantage" as an entrepreneur. Why? Because starting a business from broke forces you to think more creatively. It forces you to use your resources more efficiently. It forces you to connect with your customers more authentically, and market your ideas more imaginatively. It forces you to be true to yourself, stay laser focused on your goals, and come up with those innovative solutions required to make a meaningful mark.

Drawing his own experiences as an entrepreneur and branding consultant, peeks behind-the scenes from the set of Shark Tank, and stories of dozens of other entrepreneurs who have hustled their way to wealth, John shows how we can all leverage the power of broke to phenomenal success. You'll meet:

. Steve Aoki, the electronic dance music (EDM) deejay who managed to parlay a series of $100 gigs into becoming a global superstar who has redefined the music industry

. Gigi Butler, a cleaning lady from Nashville who built cupcake empire on the back of a family recipe, her maxed out credit cards, and a heaping dose of faith

. 11-year old Shark Tank guest Mo Bridges who stitched together a winning clothing line with just his grandma's sewing machine, a stash of loose fabric, and his unique sartorial flair

When your back is up against the wall, your bank account is empty, and creativity and passion are the only resources you can afford, "success is your only option. "Here you'll learn how to tap into that Power of Broke to scrape, hustle, and dream your way to the top." --- Publisher Notes

Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber names Entrepreneurs of Excellence

An event celebrating business leaders' entrepreneurial spirit is coming to the lakeshore next week.
The Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce is recognizing seven Entrepreneurs of Excellence during its 34th-annual E-Awards event on April 27 at the Muskegon Country Club, at 2801 Lakeshore Dr., from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
The event
The E-Awards will recognize seven individuals who have successfully launched a business and also made an impact on the community.
Cindy Larsen, president of the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber has held the event since 1982 to recognize businesses that have created new employment, invested in the community and added a new dimension to their industry.
“It really is a celebration of entrepreneurism here on the lakeshore,” Larsen said. “It is sometimes easier to start a business in a smaller community, because we have a network of individuals who all know each other and can support each other, and yet, they have the same obstacles of any business anywhere.
During the luncheon, one of the seven awardees will also be named Muskegon’s 2016 Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year.
The event will feature entrepreneurial stories from the winners and a keynote address by Bob Fish, co-founder and managing partner of BIGGBY COFFEE.

It is $40 to attend for chamber members and $60 for general admission. Read more: GRBJ.com

Kentucky Chamber news: Kentucky budget: 'Strong, positive signal to Wall Street'

It came down to the wire, but the Kentucky General Assembly passed a two-year budget plan Friday night after House and Senate Leadership spent hours working through sticking points to ward off a special session.

And while the final details were still being hashed out, leaders with the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and Greater Louisvile Inc. said the major points of the budget send the right message.

"We think the budget will send a strong, positive signal to Wall Street, and it will demonstrate more monetary discipline than in the past," said Dave Adkisson, president and CEO of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

The highlight of the $22 billion budget plan is the allocation of more than $1 billion to the state's ailing pension system, which has billions in unfunded liabilities.

Sarah Davasher -Wisdom, chief operating officer for GLI, said the funding level is a positive for the state's credit rating and economic growth.

Adkisson said the amount shows lawmakers are tackling the pension problem head-on. " It’s based on conservative economic projections more so than usual." Read more: Louisville Business First

Madison the City Chamber of Commerce hosts Health and Wellness Expo

Check up on health care in Madison next week.

Health screenings, a blood drive, an exercise session, information on local health and fitness options, door prizes and The Biggest Loser will all be part of the first Madison Health and Wellness Expo. Presented by Madison the City Chamber of Commerce, the expo offers all this and more free to the public Tuesday, 1-6:30 p.m., at Madison Square Center for the Arts.

"We are putting the spotlight on the wide range of services and options available through our medical community in Madison," chamber director Elizabeth Fulcher said. "Health and wellness is a continually growing field in our city, and many of our residents may not realize the services that are available to them so close to home.

"The expo is a result of a chamber task force that wanted to make sure that Madison residents know what's available in the health field here," she said.

Screenings that will be offered include: Lipid panel and PAD (peripheral artery disease) by Jackson Heart Clinic; BMI and blood pressure tests by St. Dominic; and eye screenings by The Eye Group.

"The screenings are free but we are encouraging people to call the Chamber at 601-856-7060 to schedule a time during the expo," Fulcher said.

Screenings will also be available to those without appointment on a first come, first serve basis, she said.

Mississippi Blood Services will have their donation van on site during the expo.

The blood drive is dedicated to Ryan LaSource, a three-year-old in Madison who is facing cancer for the fourth time. Ryan, the son of Austin and Lauren LaSouce, is heading soon to Duke University for at least four months of treatment.

"We are holding this blood drive in Ryan's name because we know the Madison community wants to do all it can to help this family," Fulcher said.

Call the chamber to schedule a donation time.

At 5:30 on Tuesday, Orangetheory Fitness, one of the sponsors of the expo, will offer a 30-minute group workout on the grounds that will combine intervals of cardio and strength exercises. Come dressed in athletic clothes to participate in this free session. - See more at: Madison County Journal

Boone County Home and Garden Show kicks off today

The Boone County Home and Garden Show begins today at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds with a full list of vendors and events.
About 65 vendors have signed up to provide gardening, landscaping and home improvement ideas and more, said Jenny Finney, administrative coordinator for the Boone County Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event. The vendors will fill both the Witham Health Services Pavilion and the commercial building from 4 to 8 p.m., starting today and running through Saturday.
“This is the first major event of spring,” said Chamber Executive Director Michelle Wiltermood. “There’s something for everyone.”
This year will feature familiar events as well as new ones, Finney said.
At the Witham Pavilion, kids and parents will be able to enjoy a new Family Fun area, complete with working RC trucks and construction displays.
This year, the chamber will give away a 32-inch smart TV and a Fitbit bundle, Finney said. To enter the drawings for these items, people will have to pick up a form at the chamber’s booth and collect signatures from 10 vendors in each building, for a total of 20.
