Good morning Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

#BestChamber Practices: Virginia Peninsula Chamber Foundation, Inc.

Mike Kuhns
The Virginia Peninsula Chamber Foundation, Inc. (VPCF) founded in 1991 has a mission to promoteand advance economic stability on the Virginia Peninsula business communities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, James City County and York County through the development and delivery of business education programs with emphasis on basic business education and leadership training for adults, high school students and Peninsula business organizations while providing mentoring support systems.

The foundation has developed three proven educational programs that produce community leaders. These unique programs incorporate different teaching styles and require the students to develop program solutions to improve the present economic climate within the Peninsula.

The premier program, LEAD Peninsula is an adult program designed to take current business professionals and develop their leadership skills and motivation for community service on the Peninsula. The program works to promote the development of civic leadership from within the business community and fosters opportunities for increased communication and cooperation among the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Through a series of initiatives and programs, the Leadership Institute provides opportunities for both recognized and emerging leaders to work collaboratively on issues of importance to the Peninsula community.

The Youth Leadership Alliance is a youth program that targets Peninsula high school student leaders. Its goal is to provide a leadership experience that will empower and inspire the students to achieve personal and professional success.

The Youth Career Expo is an event that provides Peninsula rising high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to develop and create business connections with Peninsula employers and to improve their employability skills. The expo provides students with the opportunity to develop business skills through mock interviews, educational seminars, and the introduction to community, business, and local and state government and elected leaders

The VPCF is becoming reengaged with its mission and developing new programs to further VPCF mission.

Indy Chamber president Michael Huber: Indy Has 'Urgent Mobility Problem'

Mike Huber

As the Indianapolis City-County Council weighs whether or not to put a mass transit plan on the November ballot, the president of the Indy Chamber says the economic stakes for the region's future are extremely high. In an interview on Inside INdiana Business Television, Michael Huber said, without robust mass transit options, Indianapolis is at a competitive disadvantage. "We have a very urgent workforce mobility problem in Indianapolis compared to cities that we compete with every day," said Huber. “We just do a poor job of getting people to work."
The Indy Chamber is among a coalition of business and community organizations advocating forthe Marion County Transit Plan to be placed on the November ballot. The plan calls for a major expansion of bus and bus rapid transit lines and would be funded by a 0.25 percent income tax increase in Marion County.
Proposition 145 would allow for the build out of what could be an $800 million transit system and four high speed bus lines.
Construction of the first phase of the Red Line is expected to begin next year, pending a $75 million "small starts" grant included in President Barack Obama’s proposed 2017 budget.
The initial stretch of the Red Line would run approximately 14 miles between the Broad Ripple area and University of Indianapolis campus. "What's exciting about Proposition 145, from a Marion County perspective, is it allows us to build out that full system," said Huber. "It's going to triple the number of residents within a five minute walk of frequent mass transit service, it’s really exciting." Read more: Inside Indiana Business

Kyndle initiative seeks to pair up veterans, jobs

Careers for retiring military personnel and employees for local companies is the dream behind Kyndle Warriors — an initiative rolled out March 23.

"Over the past few months, we've been meeting with local industries which have expressed concerns that they have positions they can't fill," said Donna Crooks, Kyndle's vice president of economic development and interim CEO for the agency which represents Henderson, Union, Webster and McLean counties.

The job vacancies, which vary from industrial maintenance and chemists, to laborers for the tool and dye industry and automotive industry, "have been open for a quite a long time, and they just can't find individuals to hire," she said.

Crooks said a low unemployment rate and retiring baby boomers have worked to shrink the number of people in need of jobs. "So it's very challenging to find people to fill the positions."

"Brad Schneider, former Kyndle CEO, and I started talking about what we could do to help these companies. There are things we are already doing: We have our jobs listing on our Kyndle Web page; we work closely with career centers, we do job fairs ... but we wanted to do more to help."
