Indiana Chamber’s D.C. Fly-in Brings Hoosiers and Their Congressional Delegation Together; Senate Majority Leader McConnell Featured Speaker

(INDIANAPOLIS) — One of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s annual marquee policy events is the D.C. Fly-in on September 26-27. The gathering traditionally draws 100 business and community leaders from throughout the state to travel to Washington, D.C. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky will be the featured speaker at the dinner on day one.

McConnell is expected to offer insights on policy, working with the Trump administration and the midterm elections.

Proceedings kick off with legislative briefings conducted by members of Indiana’s delegation. Confirmed presenters and topics include Congressman Jim Banks (IN-03) on immigration and Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) on trade and tariffs.

Several members of the Indiana delegation are scheduled to host their fellow Hoosiers and sit at their tables for dinner. At the end of the evening, a cocktail reception awaits at the official hotel: the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

On day two, the breakfast program with a featured speaker will be held at the AT&T Forum. The event concludes with scheduled visits to the Indiana congressional offices.

“This trip is the perfect opportunity for Hoosier businesses to engage with members of the Indiana Congressional delegation on the issues before Congress that are most important to their company,” says Chris Cerone, vice president of global government affairs for Zimmer Biomet of Warsaw, and frequent attendee.

The registration cost is $199 per person, with group discounts available. Register online at www.indianachamber.com/flyin, or call (800) 824-6885. Attendees are responsible for their own travel and hotel arrangements.

Wausau Region Chamber: Nominations Open for 3rd Annual Manufacturing Excellence Awards

The Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce has opened nominations for their 3rd annual Manufacturing Excellence Awards.

The award is a way to highlight the work that local manufacturers do to help the local economy. Brian Otten, the Marketing Manager for the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce talks about why the Chamber has given out the award in recent years. “It's a great way to recognize and celebrate area manufacturers that demonstrate excellence in a variety of areas. Those include contributions in growing the region's economy, operations, innovation, workplace culture, quality jobs, supply chain management and commitment to the region,”

The awards for the two different companies will be given out in October as it is Wisconsin's manufacturing month. Otten says the award is part of the Chamber’s celebration of Wisconsin’s Manufacturing Month. The Manufacturing Excellence Awards will recognize a recipient in both a small- to medium-sized manufacturer category and a large manufacturer category.

The process to nominate a manufacturer has been made easy by the Region Chamber of Commerce. A link is up on the homepage of the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce to fill out the nomination form. Nominations are being accepted until 3 pm on Friday, August 17th.

The Chamber will host an awards' ceremony honoring the manufacturers from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Rib Mountain. Read more: WSAU

Michigan's Lakeshore Art Festival ranked No. 11 nationally

Muskegon's Lakeshore Art Festival is on a list of the top 200 craft shows in the United States for the third year in a row, this time coming in at No. 11.

It is the highest ranking the 6-year-old event has attained on the list compiled by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The list determines the most profitable fine art and craft festivals based on the sales performances of exhibitors who subscribe to the magazine.

The No. 11 rank based on the performance of the 2017 festival was released on Tuesday, Aug. 7.

The festival first appeared on the list in 2015 at No. 83. In 2016, it was ranked No. 27.

The two-day July event fills downtown Muskegon with guests who watch street performers, contribute to community art and browse the craft and fine art booths.
In 2017, the festival had a beer garden for the first time. Engagement efforts that year included professional chalk designs, Community Canvas, a live kayak painting, Student Art Showcase, Chalk the Walk and Color Muskegon.

In 2013, the festival was established when the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce took on the task of reinventing the former Art in the Park event.

"Our goal when reinventing the art festival was to focus on quality exhibitors that appealed to local and regional guests," said Carla Flanders, Lakeshore Art Festival director. "Based on survey results and national recognition, we are doing just that. Being one of Sunshine Artist Magazine's 200 Best signifies that the artists are happy with the event and that guests are buying their unique handmade products. It's the best of both worlds."

This year marked a record number of exhibitor applicants resulting in the extension of the festival footprint by two streets. The 2018 event had three new features: the Kayak Sculpture Project, The Door Project and the Emerging Authors Tent. Read more:M LIVE

Defense Policy Bill Includes Authorization For Several Projects At Fort Campbell

Bipartisan national defense legislation awaiting President Trump's signature authorizes more than $158 million for military construction projects and other defense priorities in Kentucky.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office said in a release on Wednesday the senator helped secure authorization for the projects as part of the $716 billion John S. McCain 2019 National Defense Authorization Act.

Several of those projects involve Fort Campbell as well as an authorization for the production and use of natural gas at Fort Knox.

Here is the list, per McConnell’s office:
$26M for a Digital Air/Ground Integration Range at Fort Knox
$32M for a Vehicle Maintenance Shop at Fort Campbell
$18M for a Microgrid and Power Plant at Fort Campbell
$62.6M for the Fort Campbell Middle School
$5.4M for a Special Operations Forces Logistics Support Operations Facility at Fort Campbell
$9.1M for a Special Operations Forces Air/Ground Integration Urban Live Fire Range at Fort Campbell
$5.1M for a Special Operations Forces Multi-Use Helicopter Training Facility at Fort Campbell
$993.8M for Department of Defense chemical agents and munitions destruction activities, which will support chemical demilitarization efforts at the Blue Grass Army Depot.

"At Fort Campbell, members of the 101st Airborne Division and a number of special operations units will benefit from the authorization of new investments in their training facilities,” McConnell said in the release.

“At Fort Knox, the Army’s Human Resources Command and Recruiting Command will receive the support they need to modernize officer personnel management, and the post will receive much-needed certainty and authority for its innovative energy savings program. At the Bluegrass Army Depot, critical work to support chemical weapon demilitarization will continue because this bill authorizes the resources necessary to conduct safe operations,” he said.

Christian County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kelli Pendleton said in the release, “We at the Christian County Chamber of Commerce applaud passage of this critical defense authorization legislation. This bill authorizes funding for key projects at Fort Campbell while supporting the base’s valuable servicemembers and their families, and we thank Senator McConnell for his leadership in passing the legislation.” Read more: WKMS

As announced earlier this month, CME Wire & Cable completed the acquisition of American Bare Conductor assets, including the plant at the north end of Chartres Street in La Salle that now houses Viakable.
Viakable, part of the Xignux group of companies, currently employs 41 people at La Salle. Xignux is a Mexican industrial consortium based in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, which employs more than 20,000 people worldwide, IVAC noted.
“We are happy to be in La Salle and grow our business in the Illinois Valley,” stated Adolfo Riveron, chief executive officer of CME Wire & Cable.
Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development “was pleased to assist with the new acquisition, helping the development team with supporting data to make solid investment decisions that support their growth, and ultimately invest in the Illinois Valley,” noted IVAC Executive Director Joni Hunt.

Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Supports Patio Dining Proposal

Naperville, IL. (June 6, 2017) – The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce (NACC) Board of Directors voted unanimously to support the proposal before Naperville City Council that would expand alcohol service to patios situated on the public way.

“The NACC supports the responsible growth of our Members and this proposal provides one additional small tool for the local restaurants and retailers as they fight hard to create jobs and prosperity here in our community.” said Nicki Anderson, President and CEO of the NACC.

“The Liquor Commission worked this idea for months with feedback from stakeholders to provide the best proposal possible. As it stands now, this proposal balances the desire to preserve with the need to grow. We’re very excited about the opportunities this would provide to our community,” said Colin Dalough, Director of Government Affairs and Business Development of the NACC. Visit www.naperville.net

Arlington Business Hall of Fame inductees lauded for long service
The addition of John Milliken and Rich Doud to the Arlington Business Hall of Fame on May 2 brought the total number enshrined into the pantheon to 24.
“I’m humbled and honored,” said Milliken, a former County Board member and Virginia Secretary of Transportation, during installation ceremonies held as part of an Arlington Chamber of Commerce dinner event at the Key Bridge Marriott.
“I know the people who have preceded me [as inductees] – if I can live up to their records, I would consider it a success,” said Milliken, who long served as a land-use and transportation-planning attorney for Venable LLP.
Beyond his professional capacity, “John has given back to his community – our community – and his state,” said Bob Hawthorne, market president for United Bank and inductor of Milliken and Doud.
Hawthorne pointed to Milliken’s efforts as chairman of the Port of Virginia board of commissioners; as a member of the Metro board and Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority board; and as chair of the recent Arlington Community Facilities Study.
In his remarks, Hawthorne said Milliken’s crowning achievement may have been his work to shepherd Metro’s Silver Line from conception to completion of the first phase.
“It took a great coalition . . . to make that project happen,” Hawthorne said.
In acceptance remarks, Milliken noted that the business community was “central. Read more: Inside NOVA

Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber event: Moving the Needle
Muskegon's image as a great place to live, work, and play has improved according to Avenue ISR, an independent research firm.  Avenue ISR conducted a mid-campaign perception survey to determine the effectiveness of the Watch Muskegon campaign in improving the image of Muskegon County.
The survey revealed that 95% of community member respondents were familiar with the Watch Muskegon campaign and 38% of West Michigan respondents recall seeing or hearing the campaign messaging. In addition, residents of Muskegon County and its surrounding counties are more likely to see Muskegon as a place to live, work, and play compared to before the campaign launched.
“We are thrilled to see that the campaign is moving the needle and positively affecting the overall perception of Muskegon County, both locally and regionally,” says Carla Flanders, Director of Watch Muskegon campaign.
The Watch Muskegon mid-campaign results were presented to the community during the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce’s Business for Breakfast event. The Watch Muskegon Campaign is in its last year of the initial campaign. However, due to the commitment of its stakeholders, the campaign is expected to continue for another 3 years. Good morning #Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Find out what it means to Muskegon chamber's new chair

The theme at the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce for next two years is RESPECT.
The acronym stands for "Relationships. Education. Service. Play. Environment. Commerce. Tradition." It's the brainchild of Lee Coggin, new chamber board chair and president of Baker College of Muskegon.
"I wanted to dovetail on the Watch Muskegon campaign, and make sure we understand the diversity of businesses and people in the area," he said. "The RESPECT campaign reflected that perfectly."
The theme also will encourage members and the community to engage in tough conversations without being adversarial, Coggin said. The chamber will encourage people to come together and find common ground.
"It reflects concern about not our community, but about some of the activities we've witnessed on a national level," said Cindy Larsen, chamber president. "Every time you see a protest that involves a fight, that means people are not being respectful of other's opinions."
The hope is that in the small community of Muskegon and surrounding areas, people are able to disagree respectfully, she added.  Read more: M LIVE

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson calls for fiscal discipline at Milton tri-chamber event

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson disparaged federal regulations and advocated for increased local government control in a talk Friday at Milton City Hall.
The Milton Area Chamber of Commerce, Forward Janesville and the Fort Atkinson Chamber of Commerce hosted the joint question-and-answer session. The invite-only event was limited to chamber members and local officials.
Prioritize spending, eliminate wasteful regulations and decrease the size of the federal government—that was the crux of Johnson's message to those in attendance.
Many questions revolved around economic issues such as tax reform. Johnson called it “tax simplification” because not all reform is positive, but he acknowledged the process wouldn't be simple.
Most politicians want to lower rates and broaden the tax base, but that doesn't work because different interest groups are too entrenched, he said. Instead, Johnson called for a “paradigm-shifting approach” that would avoid using the tax code to enact social and economic reform. Read more: Gazette Extra

Industry representatives from the Kyndle FAME Chapter will be on hand to discuss Advanced Manufacturing career opportunities—and other program participation benefits. The FAME model is based on the nationally noted Toyota Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) program. Interested Kyndle FAME applicants must be high school graduates (or equivalent) and be willing to participate in the program’s 40 hour per week, apprenticeship-style format. Statewide dinner parties invite Hoosiers to discuss how we know what we know: “Chew on This: Are You Sure?” will feature simultaneous conversations in restaurants on May 9 as part of Indiana Humanities’ Quantum Leap theme that collides the STEM fields with the humanities

INDIANAPOLIS (April 12, 2017)—Hoosiers are invited to participate in a unique conversation model at restaurants across the state to discuss the nature of evidence and the ways we decide if it is reliable and valid. On May 9, Indiana Humanities will host simultaneous dinner conversations from 6:30-8 p.m. called “Chew on This: Are You Sure” at nearly a dozen restaurants from Valparaiso to Jasper. At each location, the table’s conversation will be led by an expert facilitator, someone who grapples with questions about evidence, truth and validity every day, and why they matter.

“We love programs where people gather around a shared meal because it breaks down barriers and encourages conversation,” said Keira Amstutz, president and CEO of Indiana Humanities. “How do we know if something is true? What counts as evidence? How we answer these questions as individuals and as a society affects the choices we make—everything from how we read the news and vote, to how we choose the foods we eat and make healthcare decisions, to how our leaders set policy for the economy, the environment and more.”

Ticket prices range from $20-35 depending on the restaurant, and include the meal, a non-alcoholic drink, tax and tip. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase for an additional cost at most locations. Space is limited and registration is required at https://chewonthisareyousure.eventbrite.com.

“The question of how we know what we know bridges both the sciences and the humanities, making it perfect for Indiana Humanities’ new thematic initiative Quantum Leap,” said Dr. Alan Johnson, former dean of Vincennes University—Jasper Campus. “I’m looking forward to hearing what curious and thoughtful Hoosiers have to say about this topic, and how I can relate it to my own experience.” Johnson will facilitate one of the conversations in Jasper.

Chew on This is a program designed by Indiana Humanities to use the power of food and drink as a convener of people and catalyst for conversation to inspire thoughtful discussion on engaging topics. At multiple locations across the state, groups of 10-15 diners share a meal and conversation led by a trained facilitator.

Indiana Humanities is partnering with Yelp on this event.
