Wausau Region Chamber: Nominations Open for 3rd Annual Manufacturing Excellence Awards
The Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce has opened nominations for their 3rd annual Manufacturing Excellence Awards.
The award is a way to highlight the work that local manufacturers do to help the local economy. Brian Otten, the Marketing Manager for the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce talks about why the Chamber has given out the award in recent years. “It's a great way to recognize and celebrate area manufacturers that demonstrate excellence in a variety of areas. Those include contributions in growing the region's economy, operations, innovation, workplace culture, quality jobs, supply chain management and commitment to the region,”
The awards for the two different companies will be given out in October as it is Wisconsin's manufacturing month. Otten says the award is part of the Chamber’s celebration of Wisconsin’s Manufacturing Month. The Manufacturing Excellence Awards will recognize a recipient in both a small- to medium-sized manufacturer category and a large manufacturer category.
The process to nominate a manufacturer has been made easy by the Region Chamber of Commerce. A link is up on the homepage of the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce to fill out the nomination form. Nominations are being accepted until 3 pm on Friday, August 17th.
The Chamber will host an awards' ceremony honoring the manufacturers from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Rib Mountain. Read more: WSAU

Michigan's Lakeshore Art Festival ranked No. 11 nationally
Muskegon's Lakeshore Art Festival is on a list of the top 200 craft shows in the United States for the third year in a row, this time coming in at No. 11.
It is the highest ranking the 6-year-old event has attained on the list compiled by Sunshine Artist Magazine. The list determines the most profitable fine art and craft festivals based on the sales performances of exhibitors who subscribe to the magazine.
The No. 11 rank based on the performance of the 2017 festival was released on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
The festival first appeared on the list in 2015 at No. 83. In 2016, it was ranked No. 27.
The two-day July event fills downtown Muskegon with guests who watch street performers, contribute to community art and browse the craft and fine art booths.
In 2017, the festival had a beer garden for the first time. Engagement efforts that year included professional chalk designs, Community Canvas, a live kayak painting, Student Art Showcase, Chalk the Walk and Color Muskegon.
In 2013, the festival was established when the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce took on the task of reinventing the former Art in the Park event.
"Our goal when reinventing the art festival was to focus on quality exhibitors that appealed to local and regional guests," said Carla Flanders, Lakeshore Art Festival director. "Based on survey results and national recognition, we are doing just that. Being one of Sunshine Artist Magazine's 200 Best signifies that the artists are happy with the event and that guests are buying their unique handmade products. It's the best of both worlds."
This year marked a record number of exhibitor applicants resulting in the extension of the festival footprint by two streets. The 2018 event had three new features: the Kayak Sculpture Project, The Door Project and the Emerging Authors Tent. Read more:M LIVE
Defense Policy Bill Includes Authorization For Several Projects At Fort Campbell
Bipartisan national defense legislation awaiting President Trump's signature authorizes more than $158 million for military construction projects and other defense priorities in Kentucky.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's office said in a release on Wednesday the senator helped secure authorization for the projects as part of the $716 billion John S. McCain 2019 National Defense Authorization Act.
Several of those projects involve Fort Campbell as well as an authorization for the production and use of natural gas at Fort Knox.
Here is the list, per McConnell’s office:
$26M for a Digital Air/Ground Integration Range at Fort Knox
$32M for a Vehicle Maintenance Shop at Fort Campbell
$18M for a Microgrid and Power Plant at Fort Campbell
$62.6M for the Fort Campbell Middle School
$5.4M for a Special Operations Forces Logistics Support Operations Facility at Fort Campbell
$9.1M for a Special Operations Forces Air/Ground Integration Urban Live Fire Range at Fort Campbell
$5.1M for a Special Operations Forces Multi-Use Helicopter Training Facility at Fort Campbell
$993.8M for Department of Defense chemical agents and munitions destruction activities, which will support chemical demilitarization efforts at the Blue Grass Army Depot.
"At Fort Campbell, members of the 101st Airborne Division and a number of special operations units will benefit from the authorization of new investments in their training facilities,” McConnell said in the release.
“At Fort Knox, the Army’s Human Resources Command and Recruiting Command will receive the support they need to modernize officer personnel management, and the post will receive much-needed certainty and authority for its innovative energy savings program. At the Bluegrass Army Depot, critical work to support chemical weapon demilitarization will continue because this bill authorizes the resources necessary to conduct safe operations,” he said.
Christian County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Kelli Pendleton said in the release, “We at the Christian County Chamber of Commerce applaud passage of this critical defense authorization legislation. This bill authorizes funding for key projects at Fort Campbell while supporting the base’s valuable servicemembers and their families, and we thank Senator McConnell for his leadership in passing the legislation.” Read more: WKMS

New La Salle manufacturer Viakable plans to add 100 more jobs by middle of 2019
A new employer to the area, Viakable, plans to hire 100 more employees by this time next year, Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce reported in an online announcement Tuesday.
As announced earlier this month, CME Wire & Cable completed the acquisition of American Bare Conductor assets, including the plant at the north end of Chartres Street in La Salle that now houses Viakable.
Viakable, part of the Xignux group of companies, currently employs 41 people at La Salle. Xignux is a Mexican industrial consortium based in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, which employs more than 20,000 people worldwide, IVAC noted.
“We are happy to be in La Salle and grow our business in the Illinois Valley,” stated Adolfo Riveron, chief executive officer of CME Wire & Cable.
Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development “was pleased to assist with the new acquisition, helping the development team with supporting data to make solid investment decisions that support their growth, and ultimately invest in the Illinois Valley,” noted IVAC Executive Director Joni Hunt.
“It was a pleasure working with their team and Viakable’s presence in the Illinois Valley will be a great asset,” Hunt said.
American Bare Conductor will now operate under the name Viakable Manufacturing (VKMUSA) and will service the U.S. market through its parent company CME, which is a top electrical wire and cable suppliers in the industry. Read more:News Tribune
