The Position of President and CEO

The Hollywood Chamber seeks a visionary President and CEO to lead the Chamber’s staff and members. The President provides leadership and advocacy for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, is responsible and accountable for all Chamber operations including Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremonies, and represents the Chamber in the local community and at the city, county, state and national level. The successful candidate must have extensive experience administering a staff, a thorough understanding of a Chamber’s mission and activities, and must embrace and understand the role of an urban chamber and the dynamics within the multi-cultural community it serves.

HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Chamber’s Mission

The Mission of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is to promote and enhance the business, cultural and civic well-being of Hollywood. To accomplish this mission, the Chamber will act at the local, state, and federal levels of government to develop and support specific proposals for action, and oppose legislative and regulatory efforts that do not support these principles.

About the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is the most famous chamber of commerce in the world. Every year, the Chamber acknowledges, recognizes and welcomes approximately 30 celebrities onto the internationally-renowned Hollywood Walk of Fame. Each star ceremony is streamed LIVE around the globe. As the originator of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Chamber has administered it on behalf of the City of Los Angeles for more than 50 years. Created as a marketing attraction for the community, the Hollywood Walk of Fame has become one of the most successful marketing ideas ever devised by a chamber of commerce.

While the Hollywood Walk of Fame is an internationally recognized and renowned attraction, the activities of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce go far beyond the stars embedded in the “Walk.” We are a business organization working to create and maintain a strong economy, and make Hollywood a better community for businesses and residents. Whether it is a large company or a small business, the Chamber represents the interests of the business community to assist in resolving issues that affect their ability to conduct business.

We work to promote the community through numerous activities, such as the Hollywood Expo that provides the local community an opportunity to take advantage of great offers. Our highly informative publications: “Hollywood Business Advocate”, “Hollywood Guide” and “Hollywood Business and Community Profile” are distributed to thousands of residents and businesses. We actively pitch Hollywood stories to the press and other media outlets throughout the year with extra effort focused at our Awards Media Welcome Center during the week prior to the Academy Awards when the world’s attention is on everything Hollywood.

We provide many networking opportunities through our Business After Hours Mixers, Speed Leads networking luncheons, President’s Luncheons, informative entertainment and business industry conferences, our annual breakfast with the Mayor, lobbying trips to Sacramento and Washington D.C., brown bag lunch discussions in the Chamber offices, and regular tutorials such as our monthly Tech-101 educational series and small business counseling sessions.

We represent the interests of business with government officials at the city, county, state and national level. We do this by speaking up at numerous hearings, writing letters and lobbying on issues that impact our businesses and by making annual advocacy trips to Washington, D.C. and Sacramento. We monitor the status of important legislative initiatives and keep our members informed on how they can make a difference. We also have an active Political Action Committee that regularly analyzes and evaluates pending and proposed legislation.

Beyond all of the efforts noted, we also give back to the community through our Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation. The Foundation has distributed grants to hundreds of community groups and since its formation in 1996, it has distributed more than $900,000 to nonprofit groups doing great work in and for the Hollywood community.

The Hollywood Chamber has been very active in empowering our businesses to have their own voices. The Chamber has incubated all five existing business improvement districts (BIDs) within the Hollywood District. The Chamber is currently incubating two new BIDs and administers one BID.

Finally, the Hollywood Chamber is responsible for managing the trademarks for the historic Hollywood Sign and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The care of each of these icons, with respect to their repair, maintenance and security is managed by The Hollywood Sign Trust and The Hollywood Historic Trust respectively. The Chamber, however, owns the trademarks for each and manages all aspects of licensing the use of their respective name(s) and image(s) in advertising, all forms of media use - e.g. films and television, reproduction for retail use, and the establishment of exact or similar images (visual and physical) throughout the world.

Four West Michigan Executives Share Their Favorite Rick (Grand Rapids CEO) Baker Moments for His 30-Year Anniversary in the Chamber Industry

On May 1st, 2018, we celebrated our President & CEO, Rick Baker’s, 30th year in the Chamber industry.
Under Rick’s leadership, our organization has actively engaged in championing an inclusive and magnetic community for talent, accelerating business growth through cutting-edge programming, and providing a positive business climate by fiercely advocating for business.
A native of Minnesota, Rick was raised in a rural community, where his family operated a dairy farm and owned two small businesses. As the oldest of five children, he learned the meaning of a strong work ethic and responsibility at a young age.

Rick has a Bachelor of Science degree for Upper Iowa University and is a graduate of the University of Colorado Institute for Organization Management. He is also a Board Member for the American Chamber of Commerce Executives. His distinguished career in Chamber of Commerce management includes executive positions with Chambers in Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota.

To properly celebrate this huge milestone, we asked four of Rick’s colleagues and personal friends to share their favorite Rick Baker moments.

Mike Verhulst
2018 Board Chair, Grand Rapids Chamber
Vice President, Rockford Construction

On Rick as a leader: He is probably the most connected person that I know. I don’t think I’ve ever asked him about any person that I wanted to connect with that he didn’t have their contact information to me within the hour.
Favorite Rick Baker Moment: I can meet Rick at any brewery or out for dinner, whether we’re talking work or not, and the funny thing is that he’ll make me wait 40 minutes while he goes and works out before meeting me.

Paul Rumler
President & CEO, Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce
Former Chief Strategy Officer, Grand Rapids Chamber

On Rick as a Leader: The best thing about Rick is that he genuinely appreciates feedback from his team. He likes to be challenged by them and doesn’t see it as pushing back or not being cooperative. It’s a cool thing, especially as a CEO.
Favorite Rick Baker Moment: Rick once gave me the following sage advice: “If you’re wearing pants with belt loops, wear a belt.”

Sonya Hughes
Vice President of Inclusion, Grand Rapids Chamber

On Rick as a Leader: Rick is excellent at listening to new ideas to help form the vision for the Chamber so that it’s not stuck in what we’re currently doing, but what the possibilities are for the future.
Favorite Rick Baker Moment: My favorite memory of Rick is being on the dance floor and looking over to see my CEO out bustin’ a move! And not bad, I might add!

Andy Johnston
Vice President of Government Affairs, Grand Rapids Chamber

On Rick as a Leader: What I respect about Rick’s leadership is that he’s a fierce advocate, not only for our businesses but our community as a whole.
Favorite Rick Baker Moment: My favorite Rick Baker moment has to be when he was doing the ribbon cutting for the new Chamber office!

Elkhart: Record-breaking economic development continues

The City of Elkhart experienced record-breaking economic development in 2017 and Mayor Tim Neese says that positive momentum has continued into 2018.
In the first quarter of 2018, the city issued building permits for 87 commercial and industrial projects. This number includes both new construction and alterations, for a total value of over $48 million. If 2018 development continues at this rate, Elkhart could outpace 2017’s record-breaking year of $144 million in new commercial/industrial investment. By comparison, that number was less than $60 million for all of 2016.
“Despite these encouraging numbers, the city staff continue to look 10-plus years into the future to ensure Elkhart remains competitive,” Neese said. “Today, our immediate needs include talent attraction and retention and meeting housing demands. The future depends on supporting our existing businesses and the diversification of our economy. For the first time in 2018, we will be specifically targeting new industries that will bring mid-skill, higher-wage jobs to Elkhart and will be reevaluating our incentives to align them with these goals.”
The number of technical reviews completed by the City’s Planning Department offer a glimpse into the future of economic development in Elkhart. These largely represent projects that have not yet obtained a permit but are forthcoming. Year-to-date, the department has finalized 47 technical review meetings with engineers, planners, and developers. Approximately seventy such meetings were conducted in 2017. Read more: Goshen News

It’s farm to table at Brookhaven Farmers Market — Season opens Friday with chamber picnic

The opening day celebration includes a community-wide picnic, sponsored by the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce and Farm Bureau Insurance. The market will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Railroad Park. The picnic starts at 11 a.m.
Farm Bureau is bringing the big grill and will be serving up free hot dogs while supplies last. They will be selling hamburgers for $3, and hamburger and hot dog plates for $5 each. Those come with chips and a drink.

The Chamber joined with Farm Bureau to help kickoff the market with the picnic and to spotlight local farmers. Entertainer Ralph Miller will provide music for shoppers that morning.
Shoppers can expect to see some familiar faces at the market.

#Chamberheart: Efforts to help Irma evacuees underway in Meridian

Though officials are still working to assess the extent of the damage left behind by Hurricane Irma, those from East Mississippi and West Alabama have begun their own efforts to extend a helping hand to Florida and Georiga residents.

Representatives from the City of Meridian, Lauderdale County and the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation have started a collection at the Northeast Conference Center, at 111 Highway 11 and 80.

“Our hoteliers have been inundated with evacuees, and our local churches and faith-based organizations have been wonderful,” said Dede Mogollon, executive director of Visit Meridian / Lauderdale County Tourism, as she collected supplies Monday evening. “We still had additional people asking what we could do.”

The collection point at the center will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Mogollon said, and days may be extended if necessary. People in need of supplies may come to the center during those times to pick them up. The center will continue to accept items during those hours for those wishing to make donations.

Mogollon said people who have sought refuge in the area — and she estimated that thousands of people have done so — have already spent a great deal of money. In the coming days, the quest for many will be to return home. Read more: Meridian Star

Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce celebrates 104th meeting

Mitch Daniels, former Indiana governor and current Purdue University president, served as keynote speaker to help the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce celebrate its 104th annual meeting Wednesday evening.
The chamber used “This Is Home” as its theme for 2017.

Daniels, 68, discussed a variety of topics with Wabash Valley reporters before the program, which drew 730 persons to Hulman Center’s floor.

“I’m excited to be here, first of all, because it’s been a little while,” said Daniels, who served as a Republican governor for two terms from January 2005 to January 2013.

“I look back and I made 50 trips to Vigo County during my last job. So I was here all the time, and I have so many great memories, but my duties are a little different now [since being hired at Purdue in January 2013]. I was very gratified to get this invitation.”

Turning serious, he addressed the state of Indiana since he left office.

“I don’t think it’s a secret that this part of Indiana is struggling a little bit,” said Daniels, who during his speech mentioned advantages that Indiana could exploit “to bring Vigo County and this general corner of Indiana along faster.”

He also talked about financial programs he’s implemented to help aspiring Purdue students gain admission easier.

“At Purdue, we believe very deeply in our original mission, which was to bring higher education to the broad mass of society,” Daniels explained. “When we were put there, it was just the wealthy and the elites who went to school. And we’re still committed to that today.

“I know it’s cheaper to go to Purdue now than it was in 2012 and that will be the case at least through 2019. We’ve frozen tuition. We’ve lowered the cost of room, board and books. ... The total debt of our students is down over 30 percent, even though the student body is bigger.”

Daniels then admitted he doesn’t miss the spotlight of being a public office holder, but he doesn’t regret going through that experience.

“I will say that the eight years that some of us were privileged to spend, we believe, were very important years for Indiana,” he assessed. “A lot of huge things happened. I think we can look back and we can see that a big difference was made and we can see the fruits of that today.” Read more: Tribune Star

Trey Grayson leaving Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce

Brent Cooper to serve as interim president and CEO

Trey Grayson
Trey Grayson
FORT MITCHELL, Ky. — Trey Grayson, who as president and CEO of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce led the organization through a period of unprecedented business advocacy and legislative success, major strides in workforce and economic development, and enhanced membership benefits, announced today that he is leaving the Chamber.
“Over the past few months, I have been talking with the Chamber leadership about my interest in looking at other options and I recently decided that the time is right for me to make a move,” Grayson said.
“Three years ago — after a wonderful stint in Boston — Nancy, the girls and I were looking for a way to get back to spend more time with our family and friends in Northern Kentucky, and fortunately, the Chamber allowed me to do just that.”
Grayson will leave the Chamber on June 9 but will serve the organization in an advisory capacity for the next couple of months.
“We appreciate Trey’s service to the Chamber of Commerce over the past three years and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” said Bob Heil, president of KLH Engineers and current Chairman of the Board.
The Chamber will conduct a national search to replace Grayson, which is expected to take several months. Brent Cooper, president and CEO of C-Forward, an IT services company, will serve as interim president of Chamber until a replacement is hired.
Cooper served as Chamber chair in 2011-12 and as interim president of the organization when Steve Stevens resigned as president in 2014. Cooper has agreed to take a temporary leave of absence from C-Forward while he serves as interim president of the Chamber.
“Trey has accomplished many great things as the leader of our Chamber and presided over one of the best legislative sessions for Kentucky businesses in recent history,” Cooper said. “I know I speak for the entire Chamber membership and staff as well as the Northern Kentucky community when I say that we are extremely grateful that Trey came back home to lead our organization.”
The Chamber’s Board of Directors and Board of Advisors will hold an appreciation reception in Grayson’s honor on June 9. More details about this reception will be forthcoming. Read more: Lane Report

9 signs the Wausau area wants way more entrepreneurs

Creative thinkers and problem solvers in Wausau have more and more opportunities to hone their business ideas and pitch them.

Educators, business leaders and community organizers want to grow central Wisconsin's entrepreneurial culture. And they've launched a range of programs to develop entrepreneurs and support them.

Here's a list of some of those programs in the Wausau area.

1. Startup Week

Marathon County Development Corp., MCDEVCO, is working with a group of entrepreneur advisers and counterparts around the state to coordinate a week of activities in early November.

It's in the early planning stages, but MCDEVCO is the local driver and its community engagement specialist, Nick O'Brien, hopes to pull other groups on board for a week of 30 events that highlight opportunities and support for start-up businesses. Milwaukee held the first Startup Week last year; this year it will span the state.

2.Young Entrepreneurs Academy

Wausau-area middle and high school students develop full-functioning businesses in this program. Teens work with local businesses, secure investments and brand an actual product or service to sell.

YEA launched in Wisconsin in fall 2015. It's an extracurricular program, with national ties, put on by the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce and the D.C. Everest Area School District.

3. Wausau SOUP

Community members have donated about $3,500 to four projects at SOUP events since October. They gather to eat soup and hear pitches for various projects. Donations in a kitty go to the favorite pitch of the night.

Wausau SOUP events, brought to Wausau by O'Brien, helped fund an open streets festival on Third Street and a soup kitchen that's in the works.

Southwest Indiana Chamber Lunch: Indiana Governor Explains I-69 Delay

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb stopped by the Old National Events Plaza for a luncheon held by the Southwest Indiana Chamber of Commerce Monday.

Holcomb sat on stage with Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and fielded questions about economic development in the state and in Evansville.

Improving infrastructure and attracting more workers to the state were topics the governor hit on.

When asked about the completion date delay of the I-69 section five project to August 2018, Gov. Holcomb revealed the state is in talks to take over management of the project from bond holders -

"We're going to finish the project. So, I don't waste a lot of time looking in the rear-view mirror, or thinking about what's the hardest part of anything at this job. I focus on getting the job done, and we're going to get this job done, and folks are gonna be able to drive from Evansville to Indianapolis light free and on a true freeway."

Holcomb says the project is the top priority with his administration.

To show appreciation, Mayor Winnecke and the chamber gave Gov. Holcomb, an avid basketball fan, an 'E is for Everyone' branded basketball. Read more: Tri-State Home Page

Chamber issues support for sports complex 2% sales tax

The Board of Directors of the Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce has announced its support for the proposed Vicksburg Sports Complex project and the proposed 2 percent sales tax to fund it.
The Chamber announced its decision in a press release Friday afternoon.
Voters will determine the fate of the 2 percent tax Tuesday in a referendum on the city’s municipal elections ballot.
Sixty percent of the voters casting ballots in the election must approve the proposal for the city to levy the tax.
If passed, the tax is expected to generate $1 million a year and would be repealed once the project is paid.
“In working to fulfill the Chamber’s mission to strengthen the business climate, economic development, and quality of life of Vicksburg and Warren County, the Chamber finds this proposal to be in the best interest of the entire community,” according to the release.
“The Chamber urges the citizenry to exercise its right to vote and to vote yes to the referendum in support of the project.”
Mark Buys, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, said the Chamber board was consulted before issuing the statement and support for the proposal is very strong.
“The Chamber board believes the potential benefits outweigh the risks and the costs and that this project will be important to the overall quality of life and economic development initiatives for the region,” the release concludes.
“The stars are lining up and all we need is the voters to say yes,” Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said of the Chamber’s endorsement.
“That is great news and I applaud the Chamber for getting involved, because this sport complex, in my opinion, will give Vicksburg the economic boost it needs in tourism and in economic development at the same time,” he said. Read more: Vicksburg Post

Michigan West Coast Chamber Shows Off Remodeled Offices

The last vestiges of the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce is gone.
An open house was held yesterday at the remodeled offices of the Michigan West Coast Chamber of Commerce off of East 8th Street, and Chamber President Jane Clark was among the delighted hosts of the affair. "We had a nice facility, but it certainly didn't represent our community well," she admitted. "We did what we call a 'robust renovation,' inside and out. Now we have a facility that really is welcoming; it's a lantern of light, and it makes a statement that Holland is a special place to be."
The Michigan West Coast Chamber was formed in 2012 when the Holland and Zeeland chambers merged; the entity still maintains an office in Zeeland. Read more: WHTC.com
