#Chamberheart: Efforts to help Irma evacuees underway in Meridian
Though officials are still working to assess the extent of the damage left behind by Hurricane Irma, those from East Mississippi and West Alabama have begun their own efforts to extend a helping hand to Florida and Georiga residents.
Representatives from the City of Meridian, Lauderdale County and the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation have started a collection at the Northeast Conference Center, at 111 Highway 11 and 80.
“Our hoteliers have been inundated with evacuees, and our local churches and faith-based organizations have been wonderful,” said Dede Mogollon, executive director of Visit Meridian / Lauderdale County Tourism, as she collected supplies Monday evening. “We still had additional people asking what we could do.”
The collection point at the center will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Mogollon said, and days may be extended if necessary. People in need of supplies may come to the center during those times to pick them up. The center will continue to accept items during those hours for those wishing to make donations.
Mogollon said people who have sought refuge in the area — and she estimated that thousands of people have done so — have already spent a great deal of money. In the coming days, the quest for many will be to return home. Read more: Meridian Star

Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce celebrates 104th meeting
Mitch Daniels, former Indiana governor and current Purdue University president, served as keynote speaker to help the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce celebrate its 104th annual meeting Wednesday evening.
The chamber used “This Is Home” as its theme for 2017.
Daniels, 68, discussed a variety of topics with Wabash Valley reporters before the program, which drew 730 persons to Hulman Center’s floor.
“I’m excited to be here, first of all, because it’s been a little while,” said Daniels, who served as a Republican governor for two terms from January 2005 to January 2013.
“I look back and I made 50 trips to Vigo County during my last job. So I was here all the time, and I have so many great memories, but my duties are a little different now [since being hired at Purdue in January 2013]. I was very gratified to get this invitation.”
Turning serious, he addressed the state of Indiana since he left office.
“I don’t think it’s a secret that this part of Indiana is struggling a little bit,” said Daniels, who during his speech mentioned advantages that Indiana could exploit “to bring Vigo County and this general corner of Indiana along faster.”
He also talked about financial programs he’s implemented to help aspiring Purdue students gain admission easier.
“At Purdue, we believe very deeply in our original mission, which was to bring higher education to the broad mass of society,” Daniels explained. “When we were put there, it was just the wealthy and the elites who went to school. And we’re still committed to that today.
“I know it’s cheaper to go to Purdue now than it was in 2012 and that will be the case at least through 2019. We’ve frozen tuition. We’ve lowered the cost of room, board and books. ... The total debt of our students is down over 30 percent, even though the student body is bigger.”
Daniels then admitted he doesn’t miss the spotlight of being a public office holder, but he doesn’t regret going through that experience.
“I will say that the eight years that some of us were privileged to spend, we believe, were very important years for Indiana,” he assessed. “A lot of huge things happened. I think we can look back and we can see that a big difference was made and we can see the fruits of that today.” Read more: Tribune Star
