Good morning Chamber World! It's going to be a GREAT day!

Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce to dig up time capsule for anniversary

On April 26, 2016, the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 100th anniversary of serving the community and will dig up a time capsule in Court Square.
The capsule was buried 50 years ago and once it is dug up, HRCC plans to bury a new one.
The 100th anniversary is recognized through a resolution in the House of Delegates and Virginia State Senate.
The executive director of the HRCC says that the chamber was started to help encourage the economy and investment in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham area.

"You fast forward 100 years, we're still here for the same reasons, still doing the same things, still providing the same benefits so that gives us a really deep sense of satisfaction turning 100," said Frank Tamberrino, the executive director of the HRCC. Read more: WHSV TV

Chamber Executive Ongoing Education Weekly New Idea: Pat McGaughey of www.ChamberMentor.com - Managing Difficult People

There's help in managing difficult people

The best advice I can offer in managing difficult people (whether they be staff or volunteers) is to start attending parenting classes. Ask yourself this; what do difficult people act like? There you go. They act like children. They argue, they sulk, they whine, they blame others and this list never ever ends. Sound familiar?

The answers to dealing with these childish problems, especially the one you are actually facing today can be found in the very next parenting class usually sponsored by your local hospital.

No matter what the parenting class topic will be, it is inevitable that the discussion will turn to your "problem child" because you are looking for answers and frankly, you will bring up your own issue in the Q&A portion if it is not discussed.

The secret here is to be sure you are attending a session led by an expert in parenting and while I continue to avoid anything that is 'free' these sessions are usually fully sponsored funded by your local hospital. I challenge you to go sit in just one session and see for yourself. (It may even help at home.)

Chamber interest: Gov. Scott Walker: The Wisconsin Comeback continues

"Job reports point to stronger economy."

This was the headline on the front page of a recent Milwaukee Journal Sentinel edition, and it is certainly good news for Wisconsin. Let's take a look at the latest facts from the March jobs report:

■13,100 private-sector jobs were created, and the unemployment rate dropped to 4.5% — below the national rate of 5%.

■Wisconsin reached an all-time high for total employment with more than 3 million people working.

■Wisconsin is ranked fifth best in the country and No. 1 in the Midwest for job growth from February to March.

■The labor force participation rate was 68.8%, ranking Wisconsin sixth best in the country.

■Wisconsin had the best 12 months of job growth since 2004.

On top of all of that, Wisconsin was one of just 10 states to have a better average unemployment rate in 2015 than we did before the recession in 2007. These facts are good news for working families all across the state.

It's no secret that growing jobs, strengthening Wisconsin's economy and highlighting our state's successes have been top priorities for my administration. Through tax relief and government reforms, we worked to get the mighty hand of the government out of the way and unleash the power of the private sector of our economy. More than five years into our administration, we are seeing measurable, positive results. Read more: Journal Sentinel Online Opinion

#BestChamber practices: Birmingham-Bloomfield Chamber: THRIVING MICHIGAN: Aligning Stakeholder Interests

Putting the interests of the owners or shareholders of a company above those of its customers, employees, suppliers and other stakeholders has been shown to be a short-slighted and costly management strategy.  Trade-off decisions that pit the interests of one stakeholder against another are false choices.  Business leaders who recognize this and work to align the interests of all of their stakeholders build resilient companies that greatly outperform their peers.

Thriving Michigan is a statewide program of the Michigan Chamber Foundation that strengthens communities by challenging business leaders to do four things:
To identify a purpose beyond profit for their company
To maximize value creation for all of their stakeholders, not just their shareholders
To create workplace cultures that care for the wellbeing of employees, and

To continually and proactively expand their own leadership abilities. more info: Birmingham-Bloomfield Chamber

Smithland Chamber plans for 4th of July

Smithland Area Chamber of Commerce was updated on several upcoming projects during the group’s meeting Tuesday at the UK Agriculture Extension Center in Smithland.
Terry Teitloff advised the chamber that the Livingston Fiscal Court approved giving $100,000 to the historical courtyard project at the old county courthouse. A $75,000 grant has been funded through the Pennyrile Area Development District. Chamber members have been meeting with Livingston County magistrates to review the project. A Public Hearing on the project is scheduled for April 26th. Bill Lucas, an Architect from Nashville, TN with Livingston County roots, drew the plans for the project.

Crissy Carter reported the Fourth of July celebration committee had met and discussed the cost to host a fireworks display. They have determined the cost for fireworks will be approximately $5,500 to $6,000. Carter told the chamber group that sponsors are being solicited to help fund the cost of the fireworks but an agreement with a fireworks vendor has been signed. Read more: The Lake News
