#BestChamber Practices: Virginia Peninsula Chamber - a Business Development Chamber

A Business Development Chamber?

What is it? What does it do?

Business development is the creation of long-term value for an organization from customers, markets, and relationships.

At its heart, business development is all about figuring out how the interactions of those forces combine together to create opportunities for growth.

Long-Term Value:
Business development is about creating opportunities of value that persist over the long-term, which keep the floodgates open so that value can flow indefinitely. Thinking about business development as a means to creating long-term value is the only true way to succeed in consistently growing an organization.

Customers:
Find new ones and extract more value from current ones.

Markets:
Figure out where new customers “live” (both geographically and in terms of “buying mindset“) and find a way to reach them.

Relationships:
Build and leverage relationships founded on trust and integrity to facilitate opportunities.

As a Business Development Chamber of Commerce, we connect businesses with opportunities, providing long-term value, creating and building upon new and existing customers and relationships, while providing opportunities to expand  their markets. Long-Term Value is key to the viability of the Peninsula business community. By concentrating our efforts on the present and future business community, the Peninsula will become a premier business community. Read more: Virginia Peninsula Chamber

#Chamberheart: Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber, MBS partner for blood drive

One of the last things people thing about as they enjoy graduation ceremonies and start summer travel is the fact there is always a need to donate blood.

With that in mind, the Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and Mississippi Blood Services will have a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 24 at the Chamber at 299 West Jackson Ave. An MBS donor coach will accept donations of blood to help people in the community as well as those in need of blood statewide.

Founded in 1979, MBS is the only nonprofit blood center headquartered in Mississippi and serves the whole state of with its supply of blood. MBS supplies blood for 42 hospitals and is the sole provider for the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Hoptown lawmaker 1 of 8 Kentucky Chamber MVPs

Dave Adkisson
State Sen. Whitney Westerfield was instrumental in passing a felony expungement bill in the Kentucky Senate, where it had never before received a vote. For his efforts, the Hopkinsville lawmaker is being recognized as a Kentucky Chamber of Commerce 2016 MVP.
Altogether, the Kentucky Chamber has recognized eight legislators “who displayed conspicuous actions” that helped ensure a successful legislative session, according to a news release. In addition to championing Kentucky Chamber priorities, all eight were supportive of the Chamber’s top legislative priority — public-private partnerships — which Gov. Matt Bevin signed into law last month.
The other seven Chamber MVPs were Senate President Robert Stivers, Sens. Joe Bowen, Max Wise and Dennis Parrett and Reps. Leslie Combs, Darryl Owens and Adam Koenig.
The Chamber’s MVP award recipients displayed more than just a business-friendly voting record, according to the Kentucky Chamber, though that is the primary reason they made the list.
“These eight legislators fought for a better business climate which will help move Kentucky forward,” said Kentucky Chamber President and CEO Dave Adkisson. Read more: Kentucky New Era

#BestChamber Practices: Saginaw County Chamber Ambassadors

The mission of the Saginaw County Chamber Ambassadors is to promote the Chamber of Commerce through direct membership contact. Member retention and satisfaction are their ultimate goals.

The Ambassadors are member volunteers who actively perform a variety of services for the Chamber including public relations, member retention, new member support, and event hosting. They are the goodwill, public relations arm of the Chamber and facilitate communications between the Chamber Board of Directors, staff and the members.

Ambassadors encourage the participation of members at all Chamber functions and make new members feel included.  They act as greeters and mentors, helping to build a strong and active membership.

Ambassadors conduct hundreds of personal visits and contacts each year completing member surveys, delivering new member information, asking and answering important questions and performing a variety of tasks designed to strengthen member retention.  The information Ambassadors gather is invaluable in helping us evaluate and provide member communications, benefits and services.

Working in teams, the Ambassadors provide assistance at Chamber events in areas such as registration, greeting, and networking.  Events include ribbon cuttings, monthly ambassador meetings (generally the 2nd Tuesday of each month), grand openings, Percolator Breakfasts and Business After Hours among others.  They are also key volunteers at the Regional Business After Hours and the Chamber Golf Outing.

The commitment is great but so are the connections and community relationships that result. Ambassadors are truly the "eyes and ears" of the Chamber. More information: Saginaw County Chamber
