Happy Friday, Chamber World! Have a GREAT weekend!

Chamber excitement: 'Big' announcement on Valpo's transit district could come this summer
If the city's economic outlook could be wrapped in a package, inside would include new development, new and renovated schools, high-speed Internet and new businesses.
All that and more was delivered to local businesses and others who attended the Valpo Chamber's Quarterly Membership Luncheon Wednesday, where the city's economic outlook for 2016 was addressed by Valparaiso Community Schools Superintendent E. Ric Frataccia, Economic Development Director Patrick Lyp, Valpo Chamber President Rex Richards and Redevelopment Commission Executive Director Jim Mooney.
They said if they're lucky, a major announcement could come this summer on the city's planned transit-orientated development just southwest of downtown.
"That announcement is going to light the project on fire," Mooney said. "If we get that announcement, we'll have the ability to start moving dirt in 2017. The minute we put a blade in the ground the market is going to go crazy down there." Read more: NWI Times

Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce celebrates 100 years

Susan Spears
One hundred years ago, when Fredericksburg’s Chamber of Commerce was founded, its first officers were concerned with how to create growth in the region.

In 1916, there was no income tax and so few cars on the road that building a thoroughfare like Interstate 95 wasn’t a thought.

A century later, the organization’s primary concerns are how to deal with the region’s growth and solving traffic problems for businesses in the next century.

Chamber president Susan Spears said the Fredericksburg region is evolving into Virginia’s fourth metropolitan region, and as such, the chamber is invested in furthering its growth.

Back in 1916, the chamber’s charter was characterized by a push for membership.

Mayor J.P. Rowe said at the time, “Every man who makes his living in Fredericksburg, or who will be in any way benefited by improvements and better business here should join the new Chamber of Commerce. I fully believe that every active man in town will join the Chamber, even if he has to sacrifice to do so.”

The chamber’s first president, J. Garnett King, called the organization “city-wide ... comprised of men of all creeds, all parties and all lines of business,” with a singular focus on making Fredericksburg a better place to do business.

Charlie McDaniel, a past chamber president and board member, represented his company, Hilldrup, at the organization. His father, C.B. McDaniel, was also a chamber member. Read more: Fredericksburg.com

Kyndle’s Brown Bag lunch to focus on marketing products with social media

An overview on how to better use social media for products and services will be the focus of Kyndle's Brown Bag Series lecture on Tuesday.

The brown bag will concentrate on three ideas: why you should use social media, what platform your business should be on and creating your social media marketing plan.

The presentation will be made by Tamela Darnell, management consultant for the Kentucky Small Business Development Center, according to a news release.

Darnell holds a bachelors and masters in business administration from Murray State University.

The Brown Bag is free to Kyndle stakeholders. It will start at noon in the training room at the Kyndle offices on the fifth floor of the Soaper Building at Second and Main streets. read more: The Gleaner

Chamber groundbreaking: Mississippi Power, Silicon Ranch break ground on new solar energy facility

Mississippi Power and Silicon Ranch Corporation, along with local officials from the city of Hattiesburg, Forrest County and the Area Development Partnership, held a groundbreaking ceremony for the state's largest solar farm today in Hattiesburg.
When operational, the $100-million facility will generate 50 MW, enough electricity to supply power to approximately 6,500 homes.
Members of the Mississippi Public Service Commission were also on hand for the ceremony, held at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg.
"This is the second of three major solar projects that have been approved by the Public Service Commission, demonstrating Mississippi Power's continuing commitment to cost-effective solar development," said Mississippi Power President and CEO Anthony L. Wilson. "The Pine Belt region is one of the hubs of economic development in the state and our investments in renewable energy here will contribute to future growth."
"We are committed to having a well-balanced energy portfolio, and are proud to work with Silicon Ranch, Forrest County, the city of Hattiesburg and the Area Development Partnership to make that happen," Wilson added. Read more: WDAM 7

Dearborn Area Chamber: Farmers and Artisans Market 2016 season

Jackie Lovejoy
Fresh, local foods, unique artisan products, and exciting family activities will highlight another season at the Dearborn Farmers and Artisans Market presented by Beaumont Health, set to begin on Friday, May 20, 2016 with a ribbon cutting and spring celebration. The Market will again be held in the parking lot behind the historic Bryant Public Library, located at Michigan Avenue and Mason in Downtown West Dearborn.

The Dearborn Area Chamber will host a special ribbon cutting at 8:50 am with Dearborn Mayor John B. O’Reilly, Jr. in which the public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Several special activities are scheduled all day long, including cooking demonstrations and food tasting from the Nar Bar in Dearborn, a live jazz quartet from the Henry Ford College music department, spring time flowers provided by English Gardens, a fun and engaging “pollination workshop” for little ones, and a full market including over 40 vendors!

“Our community farmers and artisans market has truly become a staple gathering for residents, businesses and visitors to our area,” commented Jackie Lovejoy, President of the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce.

The market continues for the 2016 season with the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and runs every Friday through October 7. Please note that the market will be closed on July 1 in observance of Independence Day.

The popular “Power of Produce Kids Club,” presented by Beaumont Health, will return this season. This exciting program engages children ages 5-12 in the benefits of living a fun, healthy, and active lifestyle, providing $2 in tokens every week at the market to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables. Kids who shop and interact with growers and farmers are able to participate in the market. Additionally, throughout the season children will participate in market school field trips, learning the importance of healthy foods.

“We are thrilled to have built so many partnerships in our community this year to bring additional activities, entertainment and unique, local vendors to our Market in 2016,” commented Kelli Vanden Bosch, Market Manager and Director of Small Business Development for the Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Dearborn Farmers and Artisans Market will continue to offer food assistance programs including SNAP/EBT, Double Up Food Bucks, Senior Market Fresh, and WIC Project Fresh (starting in June).

This season will feature five special event days including Flower Day (May 20), Kid’s Day (June 3), Community Day (July 15), Art at the Market (September 16), and Harvest Day (October 7).
