Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber excitement: AT&T to Expand Fiber Network to 15,000-Plus Locations in Mississippi

On Friday, June 3 at 2:00 p.m. in Taylor, Mississippi, AT&T Mississippi president Mayo Flynt made an important announcement regarding advanced technology and infrastructure in Taylor and rural communities in 19 Mississippi counties.

Joining Flynt are U.S. Senator Roger Wicker and State Senator Gray Tollison along with Mayor James Hamilton of Taylor and Mayor Pat Patterson of Oxford; Mississippi Public Service Commission chairman Brandon Presley; Lafayette Board of Supervisors president Jeff Busby; Lafayette County Board of Supervisors Kevin Frye and David Rickard; Oxford City Council alderman Robyn Tannehill; Oxford Economic Development Foundation (EDF) and Oxford-Lafayette Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Jon Maynard; and finally representatives from offices of U.S. Senator Thad Cochran and U.S. Representative Trent Kelly.
This announcement took place at the new restaurant, Grit in the Plein Air neighborhood with its developer, Campbell McCool, in attendance. The reason for such a large turnout is because AT&T has deployed fiber network services to homes and small businesses in Taylor as well as parts of rural Mississippi communities such as Desoto, Harrison, Jackson, Lafayette, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Stone and Tate County. Mayo Flynt also said that AT&T plans to expand to additional locations in parts of Chickasaw, George, Lee, Monroe, Montgomery, Oktibbeha, Union, Webster, Winston and Yalobusha counties. Paducah Chamber wins State Awards and Certified Chamber Designation

The Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce recently received recognition from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives (KCCE) for Outstanding Special Event and Outstanding Membership Growth among local chambers of similar size. The Excellence Awards were given out during the KCCE Annual Conference last week in Frankfort.

The annual awards are presented based on size and budget for Chambers and the Paducah Chamber competes in the largest category which also includes the chambers in Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green and Northern Kentucky.

The Paducah Chamber’s 2015 DC Fly-In and Unveiling of Permanent Display at the Department of Energy Headquarters was selected for the Outstanding Special Event. The Paducah Chamber has as one of its major programs an annual Community Leaders Fly-In to DC. The Chamber has coordinated this trip for the past 13 years. Trip participants include Chamber Board members, community leaders and elected officials.

The 2015 trip had a special emphasis with the ‘unveiling of a permanent wall display of the Paducah DOE site’ in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) headquarters in DC. “This display now serves as a visible reminder of the Paducah site at the DOE headquarters,” said Sandra Wilson, Paducah Chamber President and CEO. In March 2015 Deputy Undersecretary David Klaus, along with other DOE officials, visited Paducah and toured the site. At a follow-up meeting Mr. Klaus highlighted the importance of the Paducah site, especially its past contributions to the security of our nation, and extended an invitation to the local community to have a permanent display in the DOE headquarters in DC. “The Chamber quickly accepted the challenge and agreed to serve as the lead in the production and coordination of the display,” Wilson added. “The display was a joint effort. The Department of Energy provided production and installation assistance, Fluor served as the sponsor of the display and provided graphic design services, and Swift and Staley provided photos published in the history book, The Story of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.”

The Paducah Chamber was also recognized for outstanding growth in 2015 of 7.2%.

KCCE is a statewide network of professionals dedicated to promoting professional education, ethical standards and efficiency in chamber of commerce management. The board of directors guides the professional development of chamber executives, employees and volunteers across the state. The organization has been serving chamber professionals for 50 years.

The Paducah Chamber is the region’s largest business advocacy organization with approximately 1,000 businesses as members. The Chamber has a strong partnership base with local businesses – both small and large, manufacturers, industries, local governments, non-profit organizations and individuals. In 2011 the Paducah Chamber was awarded the Chamber of the Year by the American Chamber of Commerce Executives. The Paducah Chamber is also a 4-Star Accredited Chamber by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This prestigious honor puts the Chamber among the top 10% of chambers nationwide. The Paducah Chamber is also one of only six Chambers statewide to receive the Kentucky Certified Chamber award. Read more: Paducah Chamber

Chamber news: Report: Michigan businesses paid $14B in taxes in 2014

Michigan businesses are contributing major revenue to the government’s coffers despite projections showing the state will lose money under its main corporate tax this year, according to a new report sponsored by influential business groups.

Anderson Economic Group of East Lansing found that Michigan businesses paid a collective $14.1 billion in state and local taxes in 2014, including property taxes, sales taxes and income taxes that go beyond traditional business taxes.

“It really is the case that employers are now, and have been, and are going to be paying a significant share of the cost of schools, of fire and police and government at all levels,” said AEG founder and CEO Patrick Anderson.

Michigan scrapped its complicated and controversial Michigan Business Tax as part of a Republican-led tax code rewrite in 2012. The replacement Corporate Income Tax no longer applies to gross receipts and exempts most small businesses and other “pass through” entities whose owners pay income tax on profits.

Businesses paid $1.2 billion less in corporate income and gross receipts taxes in 2014 than they did in 2011, according to the report, but they paid a combined $6.85 billion in property taxes, $2.35 billion in general sales taxes and $1.8 billion in unemployment taxes.

The owners of small businesses and other “pass through” entities exempt from the new corporate tax paid $702 million in income taxes on their profits, according to an AEG analysis of Internal Revenue Service data, up from $464 million in 2011.

“The MBT and CIT are the frontman of the band on business taxes, but they’re less than 6, 7, 8 percent of all business taxes paid in most states,” said AEG senior consultant Alex L. Rosaen. Read more: Detroit News

#BestChamber Practices: Merrill Area Chamber kicks off 20/20 Vision Program with Prairie River Middle School

Think back to when you were an 8th grade student, did you know what you wanted to be when you grew up? Or better yet, did you really know what types of jobs where available in your hometown? Times have certainly changed and kids are thinking about these questions younger and younger. But more importantly, so are businesses and school districts throughout Wisconsin.
On May 20 the Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce teamed up with Prairie River Middle School and shuttled 200 eighth grade students all over Merrill to visit and tour local businesses for the chamber’s 20/20 Vision Program thanks in part to our sponsors Lincoln Wood Products and Church Mutual Insurance.
The 20/20 Vision Program is part of the chamber’s Workforce Development Program and was designed to be their contribution to the state chamber’s Future Wisconsin Project. The Future Wisconsin Project is taking a look at and asking for programming with chambers and businesses all over Wisconsin that looks 20 years into the future. Wisconsin, like Merrill, has a high aging population percentage and the project is trying to come up with ways to attract, recruit and keep our younger population in Wisconsin to work and raise their families.
In Merrill, students take part in several great programs such as The Heavy Metal Bus Tour in the fall and NorthCentral Technical College’s Career Day in the spring, but neither of these programs is Merrill specific. So the chamber designed a program that could get PRMS 8th graders into Merrill businesses to hear and see all the different types of jobs available to them following graduation and/or higher education training in hopes that the students will one day return to Merrill to raise their families.
“The more education and exposure that the students have at a younger age the more likely they will become familiar with all of the great job opportunities that are available in their own backyards,” said Debbe Kinsey, Merrill Chamber of Commerce CEO. “The kids were traveling all over the area to see what other manufacturing jobs were available in other communities, but not in Merrill. We have great manufacturers and so many more other job opportunities right here, so we wanted to showcase Merrill only to our own students.” Read more: Merrill Foto News

Despite rain, hundreds attend Hoffman Estates fishing derby

Colorful bobbers and raindrops dotted South Ridge Lake in Hoffman Estates Saturday, during the village's annual community fishing derby.

Serious rain held off for a few hours, giving hundreds of kids and adults a chance to angle for some fish, all in hopes of catching one with an orange tag worth $15 to $120.

"Everyone comes together to put this event on for the community," said Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce President Tricia O'Brien. "It's just a really fun morning."

The chamber has sponsored the event for two decades, with help this year from Sears Holdings Corp., Hoffman Estates Community Bank, Cabela's, Amita Health and Muller's Woodfield Acura. Members of the Regional Council of Carpenters Local 839 weighed and measured the fish and Boy Scouts Troop 290 sold bait.

O'Brien said participants are mostly from the area, but some traveled from as far away as Chicago. Many started lining up around 7:30 a.m. to stake out their spot on the lake.
"The rain kind of scared away folks," she said. "Normally we have between 300 and 400. Today maybe we've got about 250." Read more: Daily Herald
