Crossroads Chamber shows off members at Expo event

Shelly Harrington of Crown Point plans to open a hair salon this year, and she currently is looking for ways to market her new venture.
A friend suggested she research the benefits of joining a local Chamber of Commerce, which brought the budding entrepreneur to the recent Swing for Success Expo 2016 event at the Radisson Hotel in Merrillville. Sponsored by Crossroads Chamber of Commerce, 70 vendors and chamber members welcomed hundreds of visitors to their booths and tables. Offerings ranged from retail shops and health facilities to emergency medical services.
"I've only been here a short while, but I've heard nothing but positive comments about the Crossroads Chamber," Harrington said, as she looked over the vendor list. "I had no idea that joining this type of organization would help me to get the word out about my new business."
In 2009, a Joint Merger Task Force including members from the Greater Crown Point Chamber of Commerce and Merrillville Chamber of Commerce met to discuss combining into one chamber.
hat idea came to fruition, and In January, 2010, Crossroads Regional Chamber of Commerce became official.
"This is a great northwest Indiana event," Crossroads president and CEO Sue Reed said as she greeted visitors. "We're hoping people take away the idea that all consumer needs can be met right here in our own backyard."
Keri Parker of Merrillville was finding that statement to be true.
"Even though I've lived in Merrillville for quite a while, there's still a lot of places I'm just finding out about, so coming to this Expo was a good decision for me," she said "And when you do hear about new places, it's great to put a face with the business, not just hear a voice on the phone."
Cara Lynn Brown of Crown Point said she felt she hit the jackpot when she walked through the doors to the Expo. Read more: Post Tribune

Plainfield Chamber holds first cruise night of the year

Cruise Nights kicked off June 7 in downtown Plainfield, with hundreds of car enthusiasts turning out for the event.
The opening night was sponsored by Rod Baker Ford, and saw dozens of cars parked along the streets downtown.
Participating vehicles enter at the intersection of Illinois and Lockport and park at the first available spot on Lockport. Roads were closed for a stretch of downtown to allow visitors to stop and look at cars.
Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tasha Kitson said Cruise Nights are an economic driver for the downtown businesses.
“Cruise Nights allows the residents of Plainfield and the surrounding communities the opportunity to admire the area’s finest classic vehicles as well as the opportunity to walk our wonderful downtown,” she said.
Kitson added that the Chamber always tries to improve the event.
“This year, we have added two more dates for School of Rock to play and have increased our parking spot count.”
Money earned from sponsorships and the raffle that takes place at Cruise Night are used to improve the event and assist in providing benefits to Chamber members.
“We have continued to make the Cruise Nights a family-friendly free event for the participants and the area residents,” Kitson said. Read more: The Enterprise

Kentucky Chamber interest: State officials expect to reduce employers’ unemployment insurance contributions

State officials told the Labor and Industry Interim Joint Committee that the Kentucky Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund is growing and costs to employers are expected to come down.
Officials from the Kentucky Education and Workforce Cabinet reported that the fund had a positive balance at the start of 2016 and that balance had grown to a current level of $220 million.
The fund is expected to hold $240 million in reserves by the end of 2016. The fund balance was a negative $948 million in January 2012 and steps were taken by former Governor Steve Beshear and the legislature to chart a path out of debt.
Overtime, the changes made to shore up the fund have paid off. On Sept. 30 as directed by statute, the Cabinet will review the fund level and set the employer contribution rates to take effect the following July. The Cabinet expects levels to continue to increase such that contribution rates will be reduced. Read more: Kentucky Chamber
